Frequently Asked Questions

Where did you say that Ghost Ranch is?

It's in Abiquiu, New Mexico. Georgia O'Keeffe country. Gorgeous.

Is it too late to sign up?

(April 21, 1998) Yes. Ghost Ranch needs firm numbers a month in advance. So we're on the final approach, and can't take any more passengers! ====; o Sorry about that. . . we'll see you next year if there is overwhelming demand to do such a crazy thing yet again. ; )

I was directed to your website by a web search engine for "ghost ranch". Can you tell me if there are accommodations at Ghost Ranch for {Insert Month here}?

This is not *the* Ghost Ranch website. This event is not sponsored by Ghost Ranch itself, but a private group that is contracting with the ranch to use the Ghost Ranch facilities for the event. If you want to contact the ranch directly, call area 505/685-4333. (Go ahead and tell them that the Bryce Retreat web site sent you! ; )

Will the computer lab have Macs or PC's?

Both. We'll have a number of Windows/NT machines as well as PowerMacs.

How well do you need to know the Bryce software program to attend the Bryce Retreat?

All skill levels are welcome at the Bryce Retreat @ Ghost Ranch. We're looking for a nice diverse assortment. A minimum proficiency is desirable, anything but a stone cold beginner. (If you don't know what the "Edit Palette" is, then you'll probably find yourself out of your league.) The idea is to add to your capability in Bryce at whatever level you happen to be now. We hope to see attendees tutoring each other in the workshops in the spirit of collaboration and team teaching. The person next to you may have the answer if your teacher has left you in the dust. No matter what your level, it will be raised after Ghost Ranch because helping others is part of the fun.

Will the seminars cover Bryce 3D or just Bryce2?

A lot of the staff favor Bryce 2. However, the material that will be covered will be applicable to both Bryce 2 and Bryce 3D. It will be up to each each instructor how she or he proceeds. Both versions of the software will be on every machine.

Also, the instructors tend to be Mac Bryce users. . . Though again, the instruction will be applicable to both Mac and Windows. Both kinds of computers will be in the lab.

Would I be out of my league here? Am I getting in over my head by joining with a camp of artists?

Artists schmartist. Everybody's an artist who uses Bryce. We will have some discussions of aesthetics that will improve your way of seeing and appreciating images. The level of instruction will be fitting for both the seasoned Brycelord as well as the novice. In addition, the structure of the week will be fitting for the highly motivated person who wants to Bryce all day and all night, and will also accommodate someone who wants to just hang out and be there, and using Bryce is a good excuse to go on a trip to a lovely spot in New Mexico. Hiking around Georgia O'Keffe country has got to have an inspiring effect on one's aesthetic whether it's making something in Bryce or just soaking up the ambience of your surroundings.

Zip? Jaz? SyQuest? What kind of removable media will be supported at the Computer Lab?

We don't have a zip drive for every computer, if you have one, bring it. We'll also have a server for everyone's stuff, that station will definitely have a Zip drive for file transfer. ., .same for Jaz. No promises yet on Syquest. Bring your unfinished or problem scenes on disc to get unstuck.

What are the rooms like?

Rustic, modest, double occupancy. No Phones. No TVs. No maid service. You have to walk outside to go to the bathrooms. (If you think more like "camp" than "hotel" you'll be on the right track.) A million dollar view. Milky Way every (clear) night. Check out the Ghost Ranch page again for description.

What is the food like?

Excellent! Peas and carrots, real chipped beef, baked Alaska, keylime pie. ; )

Actually, it's cafeteria service, features wholesome food and some local seasonal produce. Vegetarian meals are also served (We need advance notice if you are vegetarian!)

What if I want to stay somewhere else? Are there other options close by for lodging? Would that have an effect on price?

You won't find cheaper lodging than Ghost Ranch. At roughly $50.00 for a room *AND* 3 meals a day this place is the local bargain.

Is it possible to attend the conference for part of the week, or to sign up for some of the events at less than full price?

No, there is no partial-week option for this week. Part of the design of the event is to get a group of people there for long enough that interaction and collaboration takes place. As far as I'm concerned, the killer app here is the people interaction. Slicing and dicing the week into bits besides driving the administrator crazy, runs counter to the overall philosophy for the week.

Why is it so expensive?

Um, a price tag that's under $1000 for a week-long instruction time --including room and board--is not exactly expensive. Look around at other seminar/teaching prices. You can pay close to thise price simply or a three-day seminar. Room and board extra. This price includes everything!

Can I just come and hang out and pay the lower guest price?

The limited number of spaces for guests/significant others/spouses assume that the guest accompanies someone who is attending the workshops. There has to be someone who actually attends and pays the full price in order to get a second person in at the non-seminar price.

Will I have phone and e-mail access if I need it?

Phones are down the hall and to the left. Or over at the other building, actually. They're pay phones. There are three or four of them scattered around the ranch. Rotary dial. And email?! Hey, this is a retreat! No way! You'll like being without email, you really will! Prove to yourself that you can live and thrive while being away from email and phones for an entire week! If you need to be reached in an emergency, the general Ghost Ranch phone number will do.

What kind of souvenirs can I take home?

Memories. Photographs. Items and bric-a-brac purchased at the Ghost Ranch trading post. (If you're talking about souvenirs from Santa Fe or Taos, well then, the possibilities are vast, silver and turquoise. --the favorite of AuntiAlias) A CD-ROM will be burned at the end of the week with everyone's scenes, goodies, and the like.

Will we make day trips as a group or can we go by ourselves to nearby sites such as Echo Amphitheater, Taos, Santa Fe etc?

Those places are nearby and availiable for anyone who has a car and wants to wander off. Of course, if you want to tell others that you are headed there and you've got room for a couple more, do so! We hope that lots of spontaneousness like that takes place!

Are we far from civilization?

What is civilization? Are you asking where the closest traffic signal is? There may be one (and only one) within 15 miles; maybe farther away. To get to a two-signal town, you'll have to drive at least a half an hour. Closest city (what you'd think of as civilization--Santa Fe-- is about an hour away).

Is there medical aid nearby?

Ghost Ranch has on infirmary and there is a clinic in Abiquiu, about 12 miles away.

Can I bring my Boom-Box and my cats?

No.
