BryceTalk Aha! Experiences, August 10, 01999
Part 3

renato!: perhaps someone here should save the log as HTML in case Aunti needs it

Gigabyte: look at 'ePower'

renato!: I wasn't here at the beginning so I can't

Gigabyte: :)

renato!: wouldn't have the whole thing

SunDogDeb: same here and I've already crashed once -- wish my ISP was as reliable as Bryce!

Calyxa: it'd be nice if that save would continue to log 'til you quit...

Jedi-Fist: Anyone here use Painter 3D for Bryce?

DreamVoyager: good idea, renato! But I came late too

Tonebone: Well I'm off to get some beauty sleep ready for the eclipse tomorrow, Cya!

CirTap: hmmm. caly, i think we are talking bout different things :-)

Gigabyte: cya

CirTap: bye

Calyxa: if I don't get booted myself before it comes to an end, I can do it... which alt key do I want?

Heather: I cam early but was disconnected when I went to Mellifluous' site and had to reconnect - saved nothing

renato!: brb gotta reboot myself

SunDogDeb: Hang in there Caly -- you may have the only copy

Calyxa: there are numbers in the object attributes dialog. they're labelled 'B' for Bryce Units (except for rotation, which is measured in degrees)...

CirTap: i saved it

Calyxa: the default size is 20.48 B...

SunDogDeb: excellent!

Calyxa: you've got to save it when it's over...

CirTap: which is a "unity" right?

Suddenly Meta AuntiAlias appears.

Calyxa: unity can be arbitrarily defined.

Meta AuntiAlias: yeeow! disconncetion!

Calyxa: w/b Aunti

CirTap: rehi Aunti

DreamVoyager: WB Susan

Meta AuntiAlias: someone please send me the log option-click the disk icon (or alt-click) and then send the results to susank@metacreations.com

Jedi-Fist: I hate it when that happens!

SunDogDeb: CirTap saved it

Heather: Hi eilif!!!

Calyxa: saved, past tense... you've got to save it when it's done.

Meta AuntiAlias: have no idea what happened....

Calyxa: I can, if I don't get booted myself...

eilif: hi

what were you on about tonight?

Meta AuntiAlias: I got hung up at the point where I went to see the image you posted, Caly

Calyxa: that happened to a couple people... weird!

the cloud tutorial, right?

Heather: yeah, me too Aunti

CirTap: i saved it a couple o times to different files :)

Betty: Can you piece it together Susan? If Caly saves now that is?

or with what CirTap already has?

SunDogDeb: Caly, doesn't the little teal colored diskette beside the input box save?

Calyxa: ya, but it saves only what you've got so far. if the conversation continues, that part isn't saved.

SunDogDeb: aHA! <grin>

CirTap: i think if you save now and Aunti saves @ the end of the session the two peices can be "clewed" together...

err: glew

or whatever

Calyxa: glued...

CirTap: or this :-)

germish speaking

SunDogDeb: Safer to save now in case you get dropped too

CirTap: anyways... the AHA for now is, if you dont save the log is lost... any lore AHAs on Bryce ? <g>

CirTap: err: more

Journeyman: hi

Meta AuntiAlias is off to render mirrored spheres.

SunDogDeb: Hi, Journey

We keep losing Aunti

Betty: Hi Janak and tech

tech: hi betty

CirTap: uh, oh...

tech: hi all

CirTap: hi tech

SunDogDeb: Save the whales...er, buffers!

renato!: wow

Calyxa: if you don't find 7 saved cameras enough, I have a work-around... and you can name them, also

renato!: save the whales, collect the whole set

tech: hi cirtap

CirTap: tell us, Calyxa

Calyxa: I was creating invisible cubes, but they add to render times...

so now I just create default material cubes and hide them below the ground...

Journeyman: no kidding, transparency really increases the render time

Calyxa: what you do is switch to a non-camera view, and select your camera...

CirTap: ... copy matrix?

Journeyman: I am playing wrould with maps

Calyxa: ya

CirTap: cool trick

Calyxa: copy the matrix... create a cube, paste the matrix...

then

Journeyman: and it is killing render time

Calyxa: page down your cube a set amount of times (something that fits with your scale)...

if you're always placing your camera at 10 page-up's from landed, then 15 page downs should hide the camera cube under the ground.

give it whatever name you want...

later, copy the matrix of the cube, paste it onto your camera and use page-ups to put the camera at the right height...

CirTap: i see.. "misusing" features :-).. like my multiple-udo thing :)

err:undo

Calyxa: sometimes the camera will act funny if you paste a matrix onto it, though...

SunDogDeb: Multiple undo thing??

Calyxa: it's like it remembers it was pointing at a certain rotation, and as soon as you rotated it with the trackball, it "jumps" around...

CirTap: rotation doesn't belong to matix?

Calyxa: it does, but the camera seems to remember it's previous rotation as soon as you touch the trackball.

CirTap: ah. ok

Calyxa: I should look at the camera attributes and see if I can figure out exactly what the deal is...

CirTap: maybe if it tracks an object.. ?

Calyxa: that'd mess it up for sure

CirTap: the camera gets" confused"

CirTap: Sun: using keyframes to "record" changes to objects = Buffer

SunDogDeb: Kewl -- thanks

CirTap: enables undos and redos

Calyxa: I'd thought about using keyframes to remember camera positions, but that's not namable...

SunDogDeb: Neat idea!

CirTap: naming the cubes is cool, that way you dont get lost in scenes :-)

DreamVoyager: Well, I think its a better idea than my names... in the end one has no idea what version RB3Eb5-New5bbC2v8 is... :-)

(typical Per Nordin file name)

Calyxa: back in bryce 3, if you pasted the matrix of a non-camera-shaped cube onto a camera, skies would render _really weird_

CirTap: <gg>

bug or feature? ;-)

Calyxa: bug, they "fixed" it...

DreamVoyager: "fixed" as in "fixated"? ;-)

CirTap: what i hate about Bryce are all those "hidden" alt-ctrl-shift-click-drag functions...

everywhere....

so called "easter-eggs" :-)

Calyxa: "fixed" as in "it doesn't happen that way anymore"

DreamVoyager: (just kidding)

Yes, CirTap, I agree. As for me, if I cant see it, I dont use it.

CirTap: btw... i was missing the "reference-card" in my copy of bryce.. what's written on it, anyways?

exactly. Dream!

hate it...

eilif: all those hidden commands are on it...

Calyxa: there's a big long list of keyboard shortcuts, but it doesn't include most of the "secret" ones

CirTap: cool... thanx Mr.Distributor for not sending it to me :-(

eilif: no?

renato!: sometime there should be a BT event on secret keyboard shortcuts. There's a zillion of em

DreamVoyager: I dont hate it... I just dont use them.

CirTap: no, i got Bryce 4 thru an internet-auction "out of the box"

eilif: anyone ever publish a list of the others, calyxa?

Calyxa: not that I know of

Betty: yeah that would be a good one, ren

Heather: Couldn't Metacreations email or print on site a list of short-cut easter eggs?

renato!: awww, t'would be no fun if they just handed em to ya! ;-)

CirTap: does anyone use "The Brain" ?

DreamVoyager: Yes, that would be good, so one could pin it up on the wall, next to the screen

eilif: ?

Heather: no AHA?

Calyxa: what brain is that, Cir?

CirTap: The Brain is a a mindmapping-app...

Betty: says you, ren. I personally would give up the fun. : )

eilif: I use another mindmapper app

CirTap: I'm currently workin on a "Bryce Brain"

that contains al those secret things

eilif: I did my sitemap as a kind of Bryce mindmap

DreamVoyager: CirTap, where can one find "the Brain"?

CirTap: http://www.nutrificial.com

a 3D-rotating thing, pretty neet

DreamVoyager: thanks

Calyxa: can't find server...

CirTap: wait...

Heather: this page has moved on

DreamVoyager: (unable to find the server)

eilif: indeed

CirTap: sorry.. http://www.natrificial.com

a instead u

DreamVoyager: eilif, what do you use, and what is your URL? Like to see that sitemap

eilif: www.fantopia.com

CirTap: or http://www.thebrain.com/

eilif: click sitemap

I use an app called mind manager

DreamVoyager: thanks

Calyxa: I wish when people used java it was for a real reason other than some silly animated navigation thing.

CirTap: <gg>

SunDogDeb: yup

eilif: ditto

CirTap: thats what "The Brain" looks like :-)

Betty: do agree

DreamVoyager: Man, I dislike Java... is slows down the puter so much.

CirTap: dont know if its available for mac. too

Calyxa: I've done java development on my mac

DreamVoyager: It is seldome one REALLY need to use anything over HTML 2

CirTap: i mean the brain .-)

Calyxa: I know of a good LSystem tutorial that uses Java

CirTap: Dream: TABLES are usful i think :-) and they are HTML3.2

Meta AuntiAlias has just entered.

Meta AuntiAlias: whew!

CirTap: whee.. rehi Aunti...

Meta AuntiAlias: you still at it?

SunDogDeb: Aunti!

Meta AuntiAlias: been having fun?

Calyxa: we're digressing...

ranting about java

Heather: begging for lists of secrets

CirTap: check the log, Auntie :-))

Calyxa: here's a _good_ use of java, interactive LSystem applet - http://www.starwave.com/people/markma/Java/Lsystem/index.html

Meta AuntiAlias: My initial net connection bombed for whatever reason. My backup method of connecting went bad (internal modem is acting up!) and so I had to go and find old trusty modema nd try *it*

yikes

check what log?

are you sending it to me?

Calyxa: the one I'll mail you whenever we decide to wind down...

Meta AuntiAlias: please do! I gotta post it, even if I'm not here.

oh, just save a copy now and send to me : )
