BryceTalk Aha! Experiences, August 10, 01999

Meta AuntiAlias: Welcome to Bryce outside The Box!

(which sounds like Jack-in-the-box, sort of)

So this topic was suggested a few weeks ago by someone who had an AHA insight while attending a BryceTalk event. "I have to think more laterally" . . it was one of those "I didn't know Bryce could do that" kinds of realizations.

. . . Where new solutions to old, confounding problems occur . . . .

so... let's talk about that. No doubt, you all have had experiences like that, where all of a sudden, you get this AHA! and solution to how to do something, right?

3d~?~elf: that, and 'aha' why didn't that work

Meta AuntiAlias: Let's dish dirt on those aHAs. .

Calyxa: certainly the "miracle tree" was a very lateral thought...

Meta AuntiAlias: yes... that one is still a sort of a "hm!"

tell us about that, Calyxa!

CirTap: well, I'm still discovering the UI :)

Meta AuntiAlias: (also URLs so's we can see!)

Calyxa: I was playing with terrains/lattices as objects...

3d~?~elf: da,mn he's here

Calyxa: but they were always so _flat_

Calyxa: then I thought about how I could make them curve, by intersecting them with a torus, or cylinder...

the miracle tree was actually me being lazy!

I made the tree-shaped lattice...

then I was going to make a separate "wavy" lattice, to make a wavy fan coral shape...

Calyxa: but I ended up just duplicating the lattices and intersecting them...

that was way too exciting!

http://www.best.com/~calyxa/pearl/miracle.html

CirTap: i still dont't understand "why" they work

Calyxa: have you played with booleans?

CirTap: i tried em and they did... but *why*

yep

Calyxa: you know how a negative cuts out, have you played with 'intersect' much?

CirTap: not much, but i know whats behind it

ony a few weeks I'm playin with Bryce

much of it seems to happen accidently :-)

Calyxa: let me see if I can dig up my pre-tree experment of a curved shape...

Meta AuntiAlias: I guess it's a matter of a complex intersect. . . we think of intersecting basic shapes, such as cylinders and torii and such, but once you get somtehing really funky there, such as the trees,t hen it gets really exciting!

Calyxa: it's probably on zip somewhere.

Meta AuntiAlias: okay... while Calyxa digs for old stuff, anyone else have a breakthrough, a Bryce aHA that you want to talk about?

CirTap: Anunti: guess it's hard to *image* what that kind of intersections will look like, if you *plan* to make them

*thinking* 3D...

Meta AuntiAlias: well, maybe that's what aHA experiences are about... stuff you don't plan to make, but once you come across them they become very handy very quickly!

Meta AuntiAlias: So.... any other aHA Bryce discoveries?

CirTap: the only AHA i had way simulating multiple UNDOs in Bryce :)

Meta AuntiAlias: how'd you do that, CirTap?

CirTap: using Keyframes...

create a new one, move to it

Clay: clever

Meta AuntiAlias: Now *that* is tricky! : )

CirTap: change what needs to be changed.

if its ok, keep it else delete the frame

Meta AuntiAlias: cool!

CirTap: thnx :)

happend when i played with §D eval, not knowing what thees green things do

Calyxa: no joy... my system isn't seeing my zip drive...

Meta AuntiAlias: I've had some aHA experiences in Bryce. . finding the way that vertical apply and horizontal apply works in the terrain editor and applying them to sym lats to make hoodoos was one of those

CirTap: ?

Meta AuntiAlias: "What's this thing do?" That is an occupational hazard with me. Then, once I figure it out, the next think is that an idea, an application occurs. . . hey! do this!

CirTap, what's your question?

(besides, "what's a hoodoo?" ; ) )

CirTap: no.off-topic

Clay: heheh

CirTap: the isk icon here inBTalk...

err.Disk

Clay: saves the logue

Meta AuntiAlias: for saving the log. hold down option or alt key and log will be saved in HTML

CirTap: will it save *one* or record a session

Danny: Thats log

Meta AuntiAlias: saves waths' there already. No recording of a session

CirTap: ok

Meta AuntiAlias: er what's there already, I mean

Okay.. Clay, c'mon! cough it up! I *know* you've had to have had aHA experiences in Bryce

; )

your work would indicate that you have!

Clay: heheh, thinking about which one I want to share:-)

CirTap: tell meeee - a real novice!

please...

:)

Meta AuntiAlias: I know what you mean. *which* breakthrough?

Gentle_Halo: The best things ARE created by accident! I've been having alot of fun with accidental creation lately...with the Multi-Rep Easter Egg thingy... here's one test I did... http://24.216.70.166/Movies/Test_MultiRepEgg.mov

Meta AuntiAlias: there's nothing like systematically going through the software writing about what it all does to get one to have breakthrough after breakthrough.. . .

Clay: Well I'm groovin on using Fonts as lattices to make buildings....

Meta AuntiAlias: we're definitely on a lattice streak here! : )

CirTap: yep, especialy not with an app like Bryce....

Meta AuntiAlias: That's another thing for aha experiences. Is someone else's chance comment about something to do....

sets you off on a tear. . . Gentle_Halo, I guess that's what happened with you, eh?

(still downloading; it'll be there soon, tho)

CirTap: i guess i have to switch the provider.. this one's ways too slow :(

Meta AuntiAlias: wow! that's wild! caterpillary kinda behavior!

Gentle_Halo: yeh...I still don't exactly know the key combo though...

Meta AuntiAlias: so. . here's a question. did you have something animating already and then you multi-replicated it?

i.e., have keyframes set already?

Gentle_Halo: no animation yet...

just a sphere...

Meta AuntiAlias: but what I'm seeing here is a movie.. . .

Gentle_Halo: Multi-Rep... and THEN I just tried rotation...

AHA!

Weird movement!

CirTap: <-- still waiting for the file to arrive :-(

Meta AuntiAlias: oh, I think I get it. . the multireplicate made one linked to the previous, so once you rotated, *then* it got interesting and then you animated *that*?

Crackerjack: 45% of 699k:(

CirTap: ah.. done

Gentle_Halo: yep...

Meta AuntiAlias: <----putting that "first multireplicate, then rotate" into the stockpile for future "Bryce aHAs" : )

CirTap: arg.. QT4 Movie?

Clay: wow what a trippy anime'

JeffP: Aunti:could you repost the link your looking at for those of us comming in late?

Gentle_Halo: and just kept playing...moving ahead a few frames...and trying rotation on different axis

Meta AuntiAlias: http://24.216.70.166/Movies/Test_MultiRepEgg.mov

JeffP: Thanks...

Meta AuntiAlias: welcome, Jeff!

Clay: REN! DEB!

Calyxa: Aunti, Klaus Busse has some multi-rep animation tips on his BSolutions page

Danny: REN

renato!: hi clay the unemployed ;-)

hi danny, calyxa, aunti

Calyxa: http://www.kagi.com/busse/BSolutions/BSolutions.html

Meta AuntiAlias: oh, good to know, Caly!

Clay: heheh

Calyxa: (recreating that file I was looking for earlier... should have it in a couple minutes...)

Meta AuntiAlias: so.. for those of you who just joined us, we're looking at Gentle_halo's animation made throught eh multireplicate easter egg trick: http://24.216.70.166/Movies/Test_MultiRepEgg.mov

it's 699k, and requires QT 3o r 4 or something to see. . .

SunDogDeb: thanks

CirTap: QT4

Gentle_Halo: do you think you can multi-Rep like that...and then RE-multi the last object on the chain...and so on and so on? to get an even weirder chain?

CirTap: where can I read the "easter-egg" thing?

Calyxa: http://www.kagi.com/busse/BSolutions/BSolutions.html

CirTap: there?

Calyxa: yes

CirTap: thnx

Meta AuntiAlias: it is there? oh cool!

yes, and Robert Bailey discussed it in BryceTalk a while back. . .

the log is...

Calyxa: there's a section on "Advanced Animation"

Meta AuntiAlias: (let me check)

CirTap: I've been on the easter-egg site this week.. maybe missed it.

Gentle_Halo: what's the key combo? anyone know...I've just been holding down ALL the controling keys...

Crackerjack: read you guys tomorrow,...thanks

Meta AuntiAlias: http://www.metacreations.com/products/bryce4/talk/logs/042299-1.cfm is the first of 4 pages of logs on animation

Danny: How can smoke flash ?

Meta AuntiAlias: look for stuff from MetaRobert.....

CirTap: (gently clicks the disk-button while holding down opt/alt)

Meta AuntiAlias: Hold down ctrl & alt while clicking on the checkmark in the Multi-Replicate (or command-option or control - option)

quoting from log (it's on page 2) Every object will be linked to the one before it. So you can make strange kinetic like creatures

oh!

I've got an aha!

Gentle_Halo: thanx....I knew I didn't need to hold-em all down!

Meta AuntiAlias: and it stems from something that Calyxa said in here a few weeks ago

Calyxa: what was that?

Meta AuntiAlias: when you were talking about having objects on a path. . . and how they were oriented, I got to thinking about a bunch of objects constrained to a path, and how a path itself can be animated so far as its geometry goes,

I got to thinking about all manner of undulating things

bypassed the first stage of undulating objects on paths to get a caterpillar creeping

Meta AuntiAlias: let me look for the movie, it's posted to my own personal web site.

Calyxa: ah, that stuff. and I was thinking of just using objects constrained to paths as a modelling tool, not for animating.

CirTap: guess that matches of sonething i thought this week:

Calyxa: I have that re-creation of the pre-tree inspiration...

Meta AuntiAlias: http://www.auntialias.com/bryce/earthworm-sor.mov

yep, that's right. 255k

Calyxa: http://www.best.com/~calyxa/pearl/0images/booleanexample.jpg shows two copies of the same boolean object ...

it's a two level boolean...

first is a positive cylinder cut with a negative cylinder to make a tube.

the tube is then made 'intersect' and it is grouped with a positive lattice.

the lattice is a box with a diagonal line in it...

my original had the lattice as a circle with a star in it.

the result is a curved piece of the lattice.

CirTap: bundle object in a child -parent relationship, link them to a path and then animate the path, to create sth like legs moving, so the PATh is the SKELETON of a "creature"

3d~?~elf: <phew>

Gentle_Halo: You could make a bird with wings made of Multi-Rep feathers constrained with that easter egg thingy!

CirTap: should work, what do you think?

Calyxa: ya

Meta AuntiAlias: right, CirTap, that takes things one further... there's lots that can be done with dependent relationships of parent child and then constrained to path and the path moves. . . .

: )

These are some great Brycean aHAs..... : )

any others?

3d~?~elf: i have a before and after...using volume water

Meta AuntiAlias: something that you discovered a while back (or maybe even yesterday or today!)

Calyxa: it was an 'aha' for me when I finally understood how ABC mode works...

CirTap: <g> 4 me too :)

Gentle_Halo: ABC?

Meta AuntiAlias: 3D, you have an example posted on the web anywhere for us?

3d~?~elf: http://www.50megs.com/3delf/elfwerx/pitabush2.jpg

this is the b4 http://www.50megs.com/3delf/elfwerx/pitabush.jpg

Calyxa: there's volume water in that?

ah, that's how you get the cool lighting...

CirTap: Halo: Alpha, Bump, Color

right?

Meta AuntiAlias: Gentle, I'm behind in last week's log-posting. there's ABC in materials there for last week's logs (long weekend trip). Will get to it today

log, that is. . .

Calyxa: no, Cir, actually I mean in the material lab where you can have an attribute come from the A and B textures, and the C texture decides which one goes where.

Gentle_Halo: thanx...

CirTap: in the grid or the editor itself?

Calyxa: http://www.best.com/~calyxa/pearl/materialtut/marbleabc.html

in the grid of the material lab.

Meta AuntiAlias: 3D, tell us how you're using water volume in those two images. . .

CirTap: thats what i mean

Calyxa: alpha, bump, color are in the deep texture editor. what I'm talking about is texture components...

3d~?~elf: pitabusg..doesn't have VW and when i added it to pitabush 2...really made it pop, for me

CirTap: ohh. k Caly

3d~?~elf: i did exchange some of the blues in the ME to greys

CirTap: VW? VolksWagen? <s>

Calyxa: volumetric water

3d~?~elf: with the preset mat that came on the VW...hehe volume water

CirTap: thanx

3d~?~elf: and also used a neg. backlight to darken the background

Meta AuntiAlias: : )

3d~?~elf: pita, being the anacronym

Meta AuntiAlias: I wondered if that were the case ; )

Danny: You know ...sitting here in a slightly off skewed reality..........Bryce is slightly addictive

Meta AuntiAlias: other aHAs?

with terrains? with skies?

with how to model?

3d~?~elf: add one more thing

Meta AuntiAlias: <--remembers the aha that came from the numerical way of multipreplicating to make X number of objects in a circle

that led to making a slide projector carousel : )

3d~?~elf: this image started out with exporting a file in pgm

and made a mat with a generational render
