BryceTalk Terrain Talk, August 5, 01999
Part 4

Steve Lareau: Caly- the file formats are odd- poser and me can't figure out how to use them at all...

Meta AuntiAlias: all up a creak?

ccasady: is break over?

Clay: heheh

Calyxa: bummer...

Meta AuntiAlias: what a crack up!

Steve Lareau: yeah, it's sad....

desdanova: <-- putting away oil

3d~?~elf: hehe

gdmsynth: Steve, I wanted to see you animation but I can't open it on a Mac. Any other mac users have success?

Meta AuntiAlias: yes. all ya need is QuickTime!

Calyxa: I saw it on Martin Murphy's G3 at the Donut Whee.

Steve Lareau: It's in Quicktime for crying out loud- are you using the latest player?

Meta AuntiAlias: sand... sand... sand.....

gdmsynth: When I try to unzip it, it says its corrupted. Tried a few times.

Calyxa: you tellin' us to go pound sand, Aunti?

Steve Lareau: Donut whee! I Love it!

gdmsynth: I'm using QT3

ccasady: I have a sand sample

Steve Lareau: GDM- sounds like the download was corrupted....

Meta AuntiAlias: sand example? cool! :D

ccasady: http://www.tilenut.com/sandcanyon.jpg

gdmsynth: Yeah. But twice?

Steve Lareau: the files on all the servers are fine- I have checed them all myself. Don't know what to tell ya.

Meta AuntiAlias: ooh! cool! tell us about it!

<clears throat loudly>

ccasady: it's a little fatm but worth it

camel: Whoa!!! SANNNNDDDD!!!!!

Meta AuntiAlias: Why! your main terrain doesn't abruptly intersect with the ground!

ccasady: See how this doesn't look like yoiur typical "Mountain hits groundplane" type appearance?

right

gdmsynth: Nice veiled walls.

Steve Lareau: guess the best thing to do is hit a tradeshow and pick up a CD from Meta wit their product demos on it, it's on there.

mmm... sand......

and angular terrains...

gdmsynth: <Siggraph? I wish!....gotta work..but its on Bryce so its OK!>

3d~?~elf: nice pic, cris!

ccasady: I forget how I did this

Clay: LOL!!!!

Meta AuntiAlias: ow!

ccasady: Here's another example

http://www.tilenut.com/sandSample.jpg

camel: Whoa!!!!

Steve Lareau: now THAT'S fun!

camel: You do remem how you did this?

ccasady: .It looks really cool, but I'll be dammed if I can repeat it!

3d~?~elf: u pokin fun at us?...

ccasady: No, I totally forgot,

Steve Lareau: a typical late night brycer....

Meta AuntiAlias: but.. but... you taught it at BryceCamp!

ccasady: well....

camel: Yah but.........

gdmsynth: SOmebody nudge him!

ccasady: rememewbr? I blew the demo there too!

Meta AuntiAlias: I remember how you did it! : ) (or are you pullin' our collective legs?)

desdanova: :: kick chris in the head ::

Meta AuntiAlias: hey hey hey!

no violence here!

3d~?~elf: passs him the oil, des d

Clay: LOL

desdanova: :: passing the oil ::

ccasady: honestly, I tried to produce this in from on a group of people and blew it royally!

gdmsynth: I did something similar with separate terrians for each vail. Is there an easier way?

Meta AuntiAlias: Chris, may I?

ccasady: bsure

bsmooth

Clay: just....bbrave

3d~?~elf: looks like drilled mounds to me

ccasady: I was about to say...

But here's what I *do* rememebr....

Meta AuntiAlias: aaaah. you first! : )

ccasady: it all began with a trick called "Altitude Render"

Muffinman: ?

3d~?~elf: is it more than one terrain?

Meta AuntiAlias: welcoem back, Muffin... we addressed your question about the time you left.. and have moved on. Right now we're talking about a coupla scenes that Chris did that you can see at this url

ccasady: ever noticed that choice called: "Altitude render?

Calyxa: (gotta go... have fun, all!)

ccasady: first step is to know where that is, how to enable it

Meta AuntiAlias: http://www.tilenut.com/sandcanyon.jpg

and http://www.tilenut.com/sandSample.jpg

ccasady: it's a little twirly-down triangle next to the big Render button

camel: Altitude as in high?

ccasady: under it are several render choices, I bet you never changed those, some of you

camel: Srry!1

Meta AuntiAlias: twirly? Render options pop up menu. Last (bottommost) pop-up menu that goes off the right side of the controls palette

Steve Lareau: Chris- lovely graphic site map by the way! =D

3d~?~elf: easy access to aa types, etc

ccasady: yes, I used to use Distance render, but after talking with Ales, it's Altitude

yes

ccasady: so....

you switch to TOP view...

and render the scene with this new render mode

it makes a B&W picture that you bring in to the Terrain Editor

blur the heck out of it,

and to get fancy, bend the curve of grays in the "Filter" Tab

so the sand has a curve to it

obviously the fitting will have to ve takn unto consideration, Plan that when you set it up

Does that make sense?

3d~?~elf: velly velly mvch

camel: MM!!

renato!: smartypants, 3d!

ccasady: tastey!

renato!: ve haff vays of making sand terrains

Meta AuntiAlias: I'm also writing a sorta different way to approach it, a way to re-state it...

The goal is to generate a second terrain for the sand.. it's smoothed, so blurring is involved.....

There are some tricks to doing it:

1- if you have a single terrain that you want to make sand for, it's easy. You simply dupolicate the terrain in place and blur it and lower the height.

ccasady: good, please do,

Meta AuntiAlias: 2- if you have more than one object/terrain (like the one with geometric objects Chris has for example), you need to generate an image of it as basis for terrain that is spread out over the whole territory of the objects.

ccasady: yup

Heather: ?

Meta AuntiAlias: Easiest way to do that is through render from top, using altitude render as CHris mentioned.

You'll have to do some tweaking to get wireframe veiw and final result to match exactly so that the result of the top view render matches the size of the terrain

Steve Lareau: I was going to say all of that above....

Meta AuntiAlias: wirefram that will fit in the area....

3d~?~elf: so far i have a big block with a nipple on it

Steve Lareau: Oooohhhh!

Clay: LOL!!

renato!: =====>8-0

Meta AuntiAlias: reduce height of new terrain.. tweak and tweak and tweak... and eventually it will work...

ccasady: yes, Susan is getting into the details of setting it up to be more streamlined.

camel: ROFLOL!!!

Meta AuntiAlias: I believe that the nipple effect is due to the sand terrain being too high

still

Clay: heheh

Steve Lareau: that's why ya gotta ... errr... tweak the nipple?

3d~?~elf: i see...no instant gratification on this one...lol

Meta AuntiAlias: did I say that?

Steve Lareau: no problem- I would have said it anyway....

camel: Hehe!!

ccasady: for instance: Just before I make my Distance Render I resize my document to 512X512. That way I have a Terrain sized remder all ready to be a Terrain

Meta AuntiAlias: tweaks are: reduce height/adjust height. Adjust position to make sure that it's spot-on

(uh oh, I can just tell that anything I type can and will be used against me!)

also, adjust overall size of the sand terrain

Steve Lareau: <furiously taking notes and names>

ccasady: I'll even add this:

Clay: LOL!!

3d~?~elf: maybe i should have used a different noun...

Meta AuntiAlias: those are three different tweaks: hence tweak tweak tweak

oKAY?

; )

Steve Lareau: Tweak me! Tweak me!

3d~?~elf: lol....

camel: More!!!!

Meta AuntiAlias: heather, you had a question?

Heather: How do you turn off Distance Render. I tried, but clicking doesn't turn it off

Meta AuntiAlias: you need to re-select Perspective Render

Heather: ok

thanks

Meta AuntiAlias: in that menu, you basically can select one of 5 render methods

ccasady: I usually do a little subtle airbrushing to the terrain in either Photoshop or Bryce to improve the sand. The Altitude render gives me a great start on where to paint the sand.

Meta AuntiAlias: so.. to unselect one, select another. Perspective Render is default...

Heather: I was looking for the word default - couldn't find it

Meta AuntiAlias: aah : )

ccasady: Perspective render should be called something like: "Full color render" or something

"Perspective" is missleading

Meta AuntiAlias: "Full Metal Jacket Render"

renato!: lol

ccasady: That would end all confusion

Steve Lareau: Full Goose Screaming Bozo Render

Meta AuntiAlias: wow! We've gone 2.5 hours so far!

camel: BAAAAAHHH!!!

ccasady: so would that!

wanna se my TOPOs now?

Clay: nipple tweak render

Meta AuntiAlias: quick tip: To DTE from Terrain Editor

Steve Lareau: hairyfish!

ccasady: no, it's too early...

desdanova: TOPOs!

Muffinman: I would like a "self esteem render" that take your picture, deletes it, and replaces it with somthing done by a professional.

Meta AuntiAlias: press control-option (ctrl+alt) while clicking the Pictures button (under Fractal and Eroded)

and you get the DTE

lol, muffin!

Heather: it works

Meta AuntiAlias: tip for DTE output to Terrain Editor

make sure that your ouput is alpha only

so the A on the DTE components is the only one activated (lighter) the C and B need to be off (darker)

then you get grayscale output.... which you then have as a terrain

so...

chris...

TOPOS!

go for it!

camel: Long talk!!!

ccasady: TOPOs?

3d~?~elf: command option, susan

Meta AuntiAlias: oh,did I blow it?

sowwy!

ccasady: no

http://www.tilenut.com/Whitley/

3d~?~elf: np...yer still the grapest

Meta AuntiAlias: :::hangs head in commanding optional shame::::

; )

Clay: LOL

ccasady: :

; )

desdanova: some pass Susan the oil! :)

camel: Whoa!!! cool!!

ccasady: whatever, these are rather big, 200K jpegs

3d~?~elf: how do ya get back?...the 'long way'?

:passes susan some wasabi::

Meta AuntiAlias: cool! da bowl!

renato!: I see...jpgs taken into TE?

ccasady: If ya really wanna get obsessive try hand painting a topography map by hand!~

Muffinman: What is that picture based on?

ccasady: It's all based on a...

....a "USGS Quadrangle map"

ever seen those?

Muffinman: Oh.

ccasady: they cost $6.oo each

camel: Ouch!!!

renato!: I saw on some site today, that some dept at UCLA is making a 3D map of the entire LA area, right down to windows in shops and everything...

Muffinman: What are their file formats?

ccasady: your US goverment can sell them to you

no formats, these are on paper.

3d~?~elf: perty dang cool, i must say!

Steve Lareau: wow- that's trippy...

Muffinman: ?!

Paper...

renato!: very nice, chris

Muffinman: What is this substance that you speak of?

ccasady: this render is still rough, I havent smoothed out the terraces yet

Steve Lareau: you hold the paper up to the screen and say "like this!" to Bryce

Muffinman: What do the maps look like?

Steve Lareau: wishful thinking....

ccasady: I will finesse this terrain to it looses those "layer cake" terraces. eventually

gdmsynth: (Time to go... Thank all)
