BryceTalk Terrain Talk, August 5, 01999ccasady: Ah, there's a bunch of people here too Clay: how are you? Ringo: Hi, Des! Sky Pilot: real good Reflash: check this http://members.tripod.com/davesou/amorphium_users.htm Meta AuntiAlias: Welcome to Terrain Night in Bryce Talk! Here's how we'll do things: Let's all begin by tossing out items on your "what I'd like to know about terrains" list. That way a consensus appears and we know how to proceed. Reflash: DEMs Meta AuntiAlias: Tonight Chris Casady (ccasady) will also be on hand to address Terrain matters. Chris produced the BryceCamp held back in May, and taught on Terrains both there and at the previous year's Bryce Retreat @ Ghost Ranch BBBcubed: Amorphuim is cool....love playing with that thing Meta AuntiAlias: as well as having shared a bunch of cool tips with us at a Tuesday terrain chat.... so.... ccasady: And we are planning a Terrain Q&A tonight Meta AuntiAlias: let's start off by gathering an "agenda" renato!: Chris, at Ojai you showed how to do those nice sloping terrains that help make a smooth transition between ground plane and terrains Meta AuntiAlias: what sorts of things do you want to discuss? renato!: that might be useful to folks ccasady: I have nothing official planed, just to field you infinite questons Clay: Terrain Tiling.....Evil or not? Meta AuntiAlias: okay... transition between ground plane and terrain (sand)... that's one thing... good.. tiling.. good, another... keep 'em coming ::::waves hands in a scooping 'keep em coming' kinda motion::::: ccasady: Since we aim to please, we desire to know where you want to focus 3d~?~elf: working with filters in the TE renato!: howzabout discussion of Filter function, 'specially "vertical add", "horizontal add" Clay: using greyscales as lattices.... and terrains Ringo: terrain animations like quakes. Clay: (hi caly) renato!: calyxa :) Baument: caly Jeffric: hi Caly BBBcubed: Hi Cal Calyxa: hey Baument: jeff and I where savin' you a seat Meta AuntiAlias: greets! Calyxa: thanks, sorry I'm late Baument: (moves beers off of empty seat) Meta AuntiAlias: we're tossin' out ideas right now for what to discuss here tonight about terrains Muffinman: Greetings. Calyxa: has someone already said, "the pictures tab"? Meta AuntiAlias: ::;adding that to list:::: Calyxa: how about the clipping bracket, that's on there, I'd guess? renato!: mmm... how about some of the secret keystroke trix in TE? Meta AuntiAlias: keep 'em coming... renato!: like, how to get to DTE from TE or the eyedropper Clay: and using the keys to constrain the brush Meta AuntiAlias: okay.., I think we can fill 2 hours with the suggestions that have been posed so far! :D ccasady: wow, my site is down...: ( Clay: :-( Meta AuntiAlias: (tho, if you want to sneak in anything else, do it now!) Calyxa: 'shopping' for fractals at low res? Muffinman: um... ccasady: I was trying to quickly upload FTP of some recent stuff....Can't! renato!: yer right Muffinman: Did miss much? I Meta AuntiAlias: Muffinman, we're just starting... Muffinman: Yeee-hoo. ccasady: tilenut.com is down! sheesh! Meta AuntiAlias: all of us tossing out ideas for what to discuss Muffinman: I didn't even know that there was an event ^_^ Greetings heather. ccasady: How many were *not* at the Terrain chat a few weeks ago Tuesday am? Heather: hi Calyxa: I wasn't Muffinman: Me. Meta AuntiAlias: good question.... : ) Clay: me Heather: trouble getting into BryceTalk Bryguy: me sfshook: me ccasady: There's always THAT material Muffinman: I didn't have bryce then! 3d~?~elf: me Meta AuntiAlias: :D BBBcubed: that amorphium site is great.. thanks for the link ccasady: wow, a newbie, huh Muffinman? Muffinman: I've had it for about two weeks. Baument: do you know the muffinman? Muffinman: Please, don't, not right now. Baument: ;) Muffinman: I have full fledged song, but not during an event. Meta AuntiAlias: Okay.. here's the agenda so far (in no particular order) --those nice sloping terrains that help make a smooth transition between ground plane and terrains --terrain tiling: evil or not --working with filters in the TE --howzabout discussion of Filter function, 'specially "vertical add","horizontal add" --using greyscales as lattices....and terrains --terrain animations like quakes. --pictures tab --how about the clipping bracket, that's on there, I'd guess? --secret keystroke trix in TE? --how to get to DTE from TE --eyedropper --constrain brush Muffinman: looks good to me ccasady: gee, that's a lot of good stuff Muffinman: I can use the terrain editor, but just barely. It'll be nice to get some advice. Meta AuntiAlias: prolly best to go over things that are sorta short, sweet and basic re: the terrain editor..... then get into techniques (i.e., vertical/horiz add; sand-smooth transitions later ) Muffinman: That sounds good to me. Meta AuntiAlias: As we get going here, we generally do this by protocol... Muffinman: Okay. Meta AuntiAlias: tonight, Chris (ccasady) and I mostly have the floor when it comes to asking additional questions and all... Muffinman: gotcha Meta AuntiAlias: if you ahve a question, type ?> Baument: (lifting feet) Meta AuntiAlias: er ? and if you have a comment, type ! then I'll put you in the queue and call on you... Muffinman: Understood. Meta AuntiAlias: so... Chris... a suggestion.. have you taken that list and copied and pasted it into a teach text window or sumthin'? ccasady: here's always my first word in terrains: Meta AuntiAlias: then you can refer back to it as need be... ccasady: not exactly, but i coulod do that... meanwhile word one: Here's a good habit to get into. 1) always rememebr to increase the resolution of your terrain from the default 128K size. make it 256 or 512. Do this before doing anything else. Calyxa: ! Meta AuntiAlias: aaah... Chris is ready to ramble.. Go for it, Chris! :D (then let's cover the eyedropper/constrain brush/secret keystrokes) ccasady: especialy good for newbies Meta AuntiAlias: indeed! Caly, you gotta comment? go for it! 3d~?~elf: ? ccasady: yes, do. Calyxa: I'd disagree with increasing resolution _first_ ccasady: lets hear the caveat Calyxa: but it should be done before a terrain is rendered out in the wireframe mode. ccasady: how do you mean? Calyxa: I use low res for 'shopping for fractals' - but that may be a deeper subject than we want to get into right now... ccasady: "rendered out in wirefream"? ccasady: true, I agree. Calyxa: before you leave the TE and go rendering, go hi-res. Calyxa: but the blanket "always up to hi-res _first_" is what I disagree with. ccasady: bit so few people realize it's hiddfen there under "Grid" Calyxa: I also find if I want to make a really really smooth terrain that smoothing in low-res gets me there faster Muffinman: ? ccasady: true too Yes Muff? |
|
|
Muffinman: What is the advantage of starting working in low or default res? ccasady: saves memory! Calyxa: faster smoothing, faster testing of different fractals... ccasady: speeds renders! Meta AuntiAlias: oh! I just remembered another one... and a cute little preview that you can have of your terrain with its material assigned to it Muffinman: ! Meta AuntiAlias: anyone remember the key combination for that? ccasady: sure, smaller sizes are easier on the system, so to speak, Less work 3d~?~elf: <<maybe ask here, familiarity status, so newerones can get caught up>> Calyxa: no, I don't -- and it only works at default res, right? Meta AuntiAlias: by the way, you can get to bryce talk from anywhere in Bryce by typing shift-t Sky Pilot: Ctrl+T? Morpheus: yep that's it Calyxa: that's the advanced motion lab... capital T is what you want. Meta AuntiAlias: It's command-T on the mac ccasady: and your terrain rez must be set at 128 for this to work Meta AuntiAlias: you see a watch cursor for a bit and then the material texture is applied to your terrain in the 3D preview that only works at 128 resolution. Meta AuntiAlias: so that's ONE advantage : ) Clay: cool! ccasady: Also I hope most of you are using the new Fractal tryes under the .... .....what's it under again? ccasady: "Fractal" button Meta AuntiAlias: I think that it's good to know the different ways of working with terrain resolution as you go in TE... sometimes higher, sometimes lower.... and going back and forth between them is good under certain circumstances... but, as Chris says, if you're not awa Calyxa: arrow next to the fractal button.. Meta AuntiAlias: aware of it, changing the resolution (in most cases) up from 128 is overall a good idea to do Calyxa: agreed Clay: (your site is back up chris) ccasady: Yes, thanks yiu Susan. That's how I'd put it. ccasady: (yes, I noticed, I was able to upload) Clay: :-) Meta AuntiAlias: k... shall we cover some of the other thigns on the list, such as constrain keys with brushing? and eyedropper and such? ccasady: isn't that a cute feature? Calyxa: ya ccasady: let's hear about that Meta AuntiAlias: go for it, Chris! :D ccasady: Take it away Susan! Meta AuntiAlias: okay ccasady: oh, ... Meta AuntiAlias: this is one I learned from Chris ccasady: did you?? Meta AuntiAlias: and that is.. you can use the shift key when you are actually brushing in the terrian canvas ccasady: Ah! Meta AuntiAlias: and your brush strokes will be at 0, 90 and 45 -degree angles desdanova: ? ccasady: right, just like in Photoshop Meta AuntiAlias: hang on a mo, Des.. : ) and there's a key command for directly brushing an effect.. Chris, please tell us about that! :D ccasady: and of course, my new favorite modifyer key while painting.... Space Bar! ccasady: Spaqce Bar gives you an eye dropper, ccasady: ...to pick up a color (gray) right off the Terrain Canvas Meta AuntiAlias: a point: you don't need to click. just point to the color you want and when you press the space bar, it's the same as if you just "sucked" that color into the brush... ccasady: incase you find that slider on the left less than precise, (because of it's tiny size) Meta AuntiAlias: once you click, you have already started to brush ccasady: ...Use the space bar to pick up a shade of gray while painting Ah, good pouint, I;ve noticed that It's rather weird actually. Meta AuntiAlias: Chris.... you can paint and then unpaint an effect, or you can directly paint a particular effect (say, Mounds). How do you "load" your brush with the "mounds" part? ccasady: you click and get the color.....then if you move....even if you are holding down the Space Bar still...it begins brushing! weird! Until you know it angler: i was wondering how to change the color of the bumps (there are the blue ones and the othere is green) ? ccasady: Sure, that's a whole nother technique to get into... Meta AuntiAlias: on the Elevation tab, angler? oh wait a sec... we got a question from Desdanova, too.. how bout we take that one first since des has been patiently waiting? (then after those questions, Chris the cool brush-effect technique!) ccasady: painting and unpainting effects, How many here tonight woulld find that reduntant to cover? How many would not? okay Meta AuntiAlias: des, go for it! :D desdanova: is there a way to change the brush shape? Meta AuntiAlias: no, only size and softness.... how hard or soft the edge is. But it's round, all round.... desdanova: k, done ccasady: Yet eventually we hope to see the terrain Editor gaining more of the tools of Photoshop angler: i heard that you can paint different terrians please repeat it!! ccasady: yes, you can paint one over another Meta AuntiAlias: angler, when you say change color of bumps, where are the bumps you're referring to. on Elevation tab? Meta AuntiAlias: i..,e blue buttons, yellow buttons. There are also green buttons.. in lower left hand corner of elevation tab, there are two small rows of buttons. clicking that will change the set of options that are displayed at lower left (in that slight curve) ccasady: the green and gold row of curved buttons Meta AuntiAlias: For those of you who've recently joined us, we're talking about terrains. Chris (ccasady) and I are fielding most of the discussion. we started out the time by tossing out a bunch of ideas to cover, so we're going through that now.... if you have a question about anything, please type "?" .. or if a comment, type "!" : ) Meta AuntiAlias: angler... I can't really answer your question about bumps without more elaboration from you. I hope that I got it with the one about the buttons... let's go back to the matter of the magic paint effect/unpaint effect topic... ccasady: yes Would you like to paint mounds for instance? Meta AuntiAlias: Chris, you were asking whether everyone here thought it was relevant or old hat (paint/unpaint effects). . . . ccasady: yes should we review that? Meta AuntiAlias: so :::turning to everyone:::: yes? no? maybe so? what're your druthers? : ) renato!: I'd like to know the direct paint effect trick... Bryguy: been there done that Calyxa: old hat here, tho the key command to 'preload' the brush with the effect I've forgotten. 3d~?~elf: fine with me renato!: oh wait ccasady: I can give an example of painting one terrain over another, or painting with "Mounds" renato!: heck,whatever... I jsut remembered that one angler: id like to hear (is that what your after?? ccasady: click on the "Mounds" button and hold your mouse down... drag slowly to the right the mounds will grow slowly and you can see where to let go you can get just the effect you want.. subtle or not then hit command Z and undo it! wait , were not done... under "Brush behavior" and the botton of your canvas.. are some choices: choose "Paint Effect" angler: and if you hold the ctrl on the key board you can see just how its going to look on the terrian ccasady: now when you paint, You'll be painting in the mounds you just created, but only where ypu paint them! You can? I'll have to try that Meta AuntiAlias: yes control key is like a momentary "make 3D preview live/realtime" cool! :D ccasady: How dos the Control thing work? Does it make a preview? ah a 3D preview than Meta AuntiAlias: control key being pressed: it's like a temporary invoking of "Realtime Linking" menu item in terrain options menu. 3d~?~elf: ! ccasady: cool.
