BryceTalk Open Mic Night, July 29, 01999
Part 4

Meta AuntiAlias: kay then...

Hrast! You're on!

graygost: by

Clay: cya

Meta AuntiAlias: Hrast? (I see that Hrast is in the room.....)

Hrast: An easy one, I am having a problem making a plane that not flat... Nothing is flat in the real world, but everything I try comes out funny

Meta AuntiAlias: what have you been trying?

Hrast: Terrain streched is as close as I can get..

Meta AuntiAlias: that's a good way to go...

Wintermute: what's funny abouti t?

it?

Meta AuntiAlias: you may need to make the terrain resolution larger to accommodate the larger area

Hrast: ahh...

Meta AuntiAlias: in terrain editor, there's a grid on the panel surrounding the terrain canvas

if you're using the default 128, you got not so much height infomration strateched out in a large area

so, see what happens when you up the resolution to at least 256, and even larger.. say 512 or so...

also...

depends how flat you make it...

some terain height information works well for high terrains but not for falttened ones...

er flattened

so.. experiment! :D

Hrast: okay... I don't know why I didn't think of that even though I now remember it...

reading it that is..

Meta AuntiAlias: (you'll hear that admonishement again around here! try it out! : )

MetaJohn: You might want to try some of the new fractal terrains

good place to start

Hrast: alright....

Clay: ?

Meta AuntiAlias: uh.. if anyone has any other ideas on enlarged, flattened terrains looking good, sing out!

Meta AuntiAlias: (no one's singing?)

(no poems?)

Clark/CDS: can't carry a tune

MetaJohn: Is that the end of the list AA?

Meta AuntiAlias: no

camel: It's a full moon!!

Meta AuntiAlias: there's more!

Meta AuntiAlias: Bluemax is next...

Blue Max: *Bows* Thanks, Aunti!I have two questions, here's the first: Do you know if there are any bugs with the Object Import command for .cob files? I'm having trouble converting TrueSpace files. Getting rid of all my Caligari stuff... I'm sure you understand!

MetaJohn: I think that we are addressing such a problem with the patch

Meta AuntiAlias: (someone else can take that one; I dont know the answer to that)

Journeyman: I can get caligari files just find

Blue Max: If I made a bent tube, all I get is a straight tube when I finally get it to bryce (just as an example)

Journeyman: fine

Blue Max: Is that patch available yet?

Journeyman: Blue I know your problem it has to do with the sweep

MetaJohn: There are some issue there, but not sure what they are

No it will be next month

Journeyman: once you make the sweep you have to click on the moouse icon on the left

Meta AuntiAlias: People waiting in line for da open microphone: Clay

Journeyman: and then you can save it

Blue Max: Ah, so at least I know someone else is experiencing it then.

Journeyman: Blue, it is not a bryce problem

MetaJohn: I think Journey has an real solution

Clay: take me out Susan... I found the log on it:-)

Meta AuntiAlias: k : )

Blue Max: Next question: is there a maximum size for picture imports for materials?

My larger Jpegs seem to be getting cropped.

Or any other files, for that matter.

Clay: I use 320x240

Clay: but you can go bigger

Meta AuntiAlias: That may also be your scaling setting, too

Blue Max: I'm making rather large (for Bryce standards) terrains... and they don't all seem to be there.

Journeyman: Some more input about this (although i don';t know the answer to your question) if you have jpg texture maps that are about 300x300 and you make three of them, apply them to a sphere you get about a 4mb file, so watch using too many image textures

Meta AuntiAlias: How large are the images you're using, Blue?

Blue Max: I know about the scaling, and I have them adjusted appropriately, I think...

Meta AuntiAlias: in pixel dimensions, I mean

Blue Max: 400 x 350, sometimes....

Clay: what resolutions?

(dpi)

Blue Max: 8 bit stuff, usually.

Oh, 300 dpi

Lise: ouch!

Meta AuntiAlias: hmmm. I haven't run tests on this recently, but generally...

72 ppi works better

Blue Max: As I said, "big stuff"

Meta AuntiAlias: (as of Bryce 2.. so this info may be outta date)

Gigabyte: cya all later :)

Blue Max: I'm trying to use Bryce as CYAN might use Softimage... hehehe....

Meta AuntiAlias: 400 x 35 0 isn't what I consider big

Journeyman: well gotta go all

Clay: heheh I know that feeling:-)

Journeyman: cya guys

Clay: cya Janak

Meta AuntiAlias: having images that are at 300 ppi resolution is not something I"d do

Clay: me either

Blue Max: What would you recommend?

Meta AuntiAlias: 72

Clay: 72 dpi

Blue Max: I'll try 72 as a setting then, and see how it works.

Meta AuntiAlias: keep us posted! : )

Blue Max: And with that, I'll open the Open Mic again.

Thanks Folks!

Clay: you're welcome:-)

Meta AuntiAlias: Well, Clay said "take me out" ...... so... take me out to the ball game!

Clay: heheh

Meta AuntiAlias: (at least I can carry a tune!)

:::drops tune:::

Clay: cracker jack Susan

Meta AuntiAlias: ow! my foot!

MetaJohn: ouch

Blue Max: *whistles tunelessly*

Clark/CDS: ;-(

Meta AuntiAlias: ; )

Clay: <---ears bleeding

Meta AuntiAlias: so....

camel: Full mooooon!!!:)

Meta AuntiAlias: roflol!

demjohn: hey guys&girls. i have returned

MetaJohn: Isn't there an eclipse tonight?

Wintermute: I want weather effects

Meta AuntiAlias: I don't care if I ever go back and it's root root root for the up-date

Clay: LOL

Wintermute: I've said it before and I'll say it again

camel: That was other night.

Meta AuntiAlias: there was an eclipse the other night?

MetaJohn: missed it again

Meta AuntiAlias: : (

Clay: :-(

camel: Yup

Meta AuntiAlias: anyone else want to step up to the microphone?

tell us about the eclipse if you saw it...

Clay: I would like to sing my rendition of desperado.....

Blue Max: Luner or Solar?

camel: Didnt see it. Heard on the news.

Wintermute: anybody have any 100% Brycean tornado's they've rendered?

camel: Luner i think.

MetaJohn: lunar

partial

Meta AuntiAlias: okay, Clay... .it's yours! Ladeeez and Gentlemen! I present Clay!

demjohn: do you know what b5 really needs? real-world units. feet, meters, and such...it would be so nice to pull in the SDTS for Mt. Massive, Colorado, and set the hight to 14,421ft so that the atmospheric effects would scale properly with the image and terrain

Clark/CDS: are you aware that zygote has added a free weekly Bryce model to their free weekly Poser models

Clay: LOL noooooooo

BRB

Meta AuntiAlias: stage fright!

demjohn: er, height

MetaJohn: They have a great CD of Bryce models too

Wintermute: demjohn: nah. They need weather effects first

Blue Max: -----> Rain!!! <-----

demjohn: winter: the weather effects wouldn't look right because the scale would be all weird ;)

Clark/CDS: anyone played with Eric W's new ArtMatic->does terrians maps and other stuff

demjohn: w/o real-world units, that is

clark: no. what's the url for it? is there a mac version?

Meta AuntiAlias: www.uisoftware.com i believe

camel: Or pc?

Clark/CDS: John...I beta'd the Z-bryce models

mac only

Meta AuntiAlias: heh. next thing you know, there'll be requests for an El Niņo model in Bryce....

weather model...

demjohn: AA: cool. that's where metasynth is too, correct? (did eric w. ever work for meta?, or did he just co-develop bryce 1?

Meta AuntiAlias: maybe a global warming engine.... yeah, that's it! ; )

Ringo: I would like one Aunti.

demjohn: AA: la niņa too 8)

Meta AuntiAlias: Eric developed Bryce 1, and was an employee of HSC Software....

Reflash: trees

Meta AuntiAlias: prolly of MetaTools too, but I'm not sure...

demjohn: don't forget the ozone hole size slider

Meta AuntiAlias: Tsunami generator!

Blue Max: *rolls eyes heavenward*

Meta AuntiAlias: (is really tempted to shake the monitor to shake all your computers to do a real earthquake effect. alas)

Ringo: Here is a Bryce4-Poser4 image...the doggie is hungry. http://members.xoom.com/rfmgraphics/test5.html

camel: How bout a slider for different lenses for the camera!!

demjohn: tsunami's rock! you could just click a point for an underwater seismic disturbance, and b5 could automatically animate a tsunami hitting all of the proper coastal areas. talk about reality! 8)

Meta AuntiAlias: er.. yeah, I guess you'd need the wave proximity thingie to be in place before that, eh?

Blue Max: I would like different focal lengths... Far out objects out of focus, that sort of thing...

Clark/CDS: Add f-stops

demjohn: bluemax: the materials editor has a distance blur already, though i haven't used it enough to know how well it works

Blue Max: Yeah? I haven't noticed it....

Clark/CDS: and focus points

Meta AuntiAlias: (it's for bump...)

Blue Max: Egad! I will have to pull out my manual again.... *roots through bookshelf*

demjohn: actually, the camera controls should be easier to use... real 3d ray-traced lens flares would look great on the sun and on specular hi-lites

Blue Max: But I meant overall objects being in or out of focus... not just their applied textures.

MetaJohn: brb

Meta AuntiAlias: you do know the way to fake that, don't you?

Blue Max: No... what?

demjohn: i see what you mean, blue...i didn't know it was only for bumps until AA said so

Meta AuntiAlias: using distance render....

render your scene normally

then render it again using distance render mode.

demjohn: AA: a distance render and kraussian blur in kpt5?

Meta AuntiAlias: export that distance render

and then load that as a mask for blurs...

demjohn: or gaussian blur in photoshop

Meta AuntiAlias: possibly kraussian; I prefer blur more to gaussian

Clark/CDS: never looks right AA, and it asumes that you only want the background blurred, not the foreground

Meta AuntiAlias: gaussian tends to "pull" image area from under the mask...

Blue Max: hmmmm..... that's assuming you have photoshop... I'm what one would call a "cheap bastard".... I have photo-paint 9 (Corel)

MetaJohn: back

Meta AuntiAlias: looks weird at edges, if you got stuff far/close

well..

in this case, trying a basic blur and applying several times works better than trying to do it all at once using a gaussian blur

demjohn: AA: i like Kraussian better too...not only what you said, but it also doesn't add banding/posterizing artifacts to high-contrast blur areas like gaussian sometimes does

Meta AuntiAlias: yeah, I gotta play with that some more, demjohn! : )

demjohn: AA: me too. i've only used kraussian a few times so far 8)

Blue Max: Thanks All! http://www.geocities.com/siliconvalley/garage/1519/

MetaJohn: It isd really good if you have to pump up to a high blurr

Meta AuntiAlias: anyone else wanna take a turn at this microphone ::::waves it around toward the crowd::::

demjohn: AA: gimme a sec...i'm trying to remember another little question i wanted to ask...anyone else go ahead while i'm thinking

MetaJohn: I have to go, been in this charir at this computer fro 15 hours straight!

Clay: sheesh!

MetaJohn: See you all soon

Meta AuntiAlias: :::Continues waving aroudn the microphone:::::

demjohn: meta: wowo! you at work?

Clay: cya John

Meta AuntiAlias: Screeeeeeeeeee! Oops! feedback!

MetaJohn: Not really, just in the office

demjohn: bye metaJ

Meta AuntiAlias: seeya, John! : )

Wintermute: bye John

Meta AuntiAlias: not even a little tap dance?

poetry reading?

camel: Turn it to 11!!!

Wintermute: AA: all us Mac people are too busy writing flame mails to everybody who's ever said anything bad about the platform.

can't expect us to do a whole lot here, now, can you?

demjohn: AA: i don't know if i said so before, but i'll definitely share the DEM/SDTS tricks that i know when ever you have that DEM-BT discussion...i'll email you about it before i log off tonight

Meta AuntiAlias: now *that* is a tap dance!

k cool!

I've the first two lines of a limerick....

stuck on the rest, tho

demjohn: AA: pray tell

demjohn: the limerick, that is
