|
BryceTalk Open Mic Night, July 29, 01999MetaJohn: Welcome guys MetaJohn: Tonight we are open to nayhting meta.... at least we will try anything DonaldSGriffin: I just want to make little balls that look like the sparks off of fireworks. Is that too much to ask? 3d~?~elf: hope it's not going to be a rag chewing event Buddy: ? DonaldSGriffin: I just want little sparkly balls. :) MetaJohn: You decide Clay: LOL MetaJohn: lol Ringo: Ok 3d~?~elf: don, there's an ointment for that Clay: hahah! John_Spirko: :-) DonaldSGriffin: (to make them or cure them?) 3d~?~elf: yes! demjohn: hey all MetaJohn: Anyone got any ideas about sparklers? Buddy: ?????? DonaldSGriffin: ? Clay: use infini-d? Ringo: sparklers? good one. MetaJohn: For Donalds balls Clay: LOL!!! 3d~?~elf: hehe Clay: a good swift kick? DonaldSGriffin: (are we queueing yet? (who the heck to you spell queeueeieeing?) LOL Meta AuntiAlias: queueing, I think.... Buddy: ? DonaldSGriffin: (HAH my first LOL) demjohn: AAlias/metaJ: is there still the secret object menu in b4 to make sphere clusters and all of those other irregular ojects? or some equivalent...the sphere clusters were awesome for clouds Clay: :-) Meta AuntiAlias: John, are we queueing yet? MetaJohn: Yes Susan Meta AuntiAlias: oh.. okay.. here's the game plan, then! MetaJohn: Donald had a question Clay: oh Buddy: ? John_Spirko: I have a material that might be a start for sparklers: Meta AuntiAlias: if you've not been to one of these before... you might notice that there are a few lone question marks here .... that's how you queue.. if you have a question, type "?" and a comment "!" I'll keep track of the queue and call on you... we do the queue to keep the bedlam down to a reasonable level! : ) demjohn: ? Meta AuntiAlias: So... let me collect the queue names.... Buddy: ? Ringo: don't we have filters that create sparkles? DonaldSGriffin: ? (same as before) demjohn: (for the question i asked above about the secret menu) 3d~?~elf: (it's not in B4) MetaJohn: Susan Donald has asked how to make sparly balls DonaldSGriffin: (I have to wake the baby any minute) 3d~?~elf: hehe Meta AuntiAlias: Queue: Buddy, DonaldSGriffin, demjohn MetaJohn: sparkly 3d~?~elf: better ! Buddy: Why hasn't last weeks Bryce Talk "SKIES" transcript been posted yet? I missed that one. DonaldSGriffin: Actually I would be happy with visible lights or objects that generate their own light. Meta AuntiAlias: okay, Game Plan Reiteration number 2... DonaldSGriffin: I spent all morning trying it with lights and it just wouldn't fly. Meta AuntiAlias: when I write "queue and list names" Im telling everyone who's in line MetaJohn: elf, you have a solution? Meta AuntiAlias: even tho you're first in line, you're not ON until I say "go for it " or "go ahead" or something similr thereto : ) Buddy: ok 3d~?~elf: (was wording with you...>g<) Meta AuntiAlias: so, Buddy, apparently, Donald's question had the floor before yours did (and besides, I answered it in the lobby) demjohn: cool...i'll wait my turn (i have a different ? now though) Meta AuntiAlias: so.. uh, sparkly balls Buddy: Missed it. DonaldSGriffin: Well, just balls that generate light but do not wash each other out. DonaldSGriffin: They could be lights or objects that make light if that is possible. Meta AuntiAlias: sprakly how? disco mirrored balls? or that shine lights? or that emanate glittery light? tommyc: huh DonaldSGriffin: Just bright points of light with color... DonaldSGriffin: .. the problem is... DonaldSGriffin: if they are bright enough then they wash each other out. MtnCub: *click* John_Spirko: ! sparkly material Ringo: in the texturing. Meta AuntiAlias: hmmm.. maybe negative lights to "soak up" the extra lights? MtnCub: *blink* .. negative lights ? ? ? DonaldSGriffin: Using visible lights only makes they all make each other NOT visible ... ... so I can see the light on a big screen behind them but I don't see the lights themselves. Meta AuntiAlias: negative lights: a light with intensity set to negative number.. rather than shedding light, the light obejct sucks light from the scene... Ringo: texture bright points and have them be metalic. MtnCub: OH gosh .. how cool Steve Lareau: like an ex wife.... demjohn: a black hole of sorts DonaldSGriffin: Ya I thought about that for another purpose. MtnCub: *chuckle* Buddy: This is the 3rd time I've been to Bryce talk and I'm not getting any answers to my questions. MetaJohn: Hang in there Buddy Buddy: OK Meta AuntiAlias: Buddy, dearest, patience! You're next in line rgross: good even'n everyone Meta AuntiAlias: we cna't all have all our questions answered all at once! Meta AuntiAlias: else this would be BryceMindRead and not BryceTalk! :D badapple: Hello all DonaldSGriffin: Meta, maybe if you could just explain the three controls in the light edit menu. Meta AuntiAlias: Greets! We rgross: aw protocol? Meta AuntiAlias: are doing open Mic night. If you want to get in the line to share the microphone, a simple "?" or "!" will get you into the queue MetaJohn: ? to be put on the list of questioners Meta AuntiAlias: then I'll call on you when you reach da head o da line! MetaJohn: ! for an answer Wait to be called Meta AuntiAlias: (or a comment!) MtnCub: ? Ringo: http://www.hunyes.com/ Meta AuntiAlias: So... have we answered the sparkly ball question, or not (I'm losing count!) MetaJohn: Me too badapple: ? How does one get to set up new catagories in the Object prrset library Hoot: ? |

DonaldSGriffin: Susan I think I really need that book sooner than August. tommy: ? MetaJohn: Did you get your answer Donald? Meta AuntiAlias: JSpirko, you had an answer to sparkly balls? if so, go for it! MtnCub: brb... DonaldSGriffin: Well, I asked the question a lot of different ways but you were busy fending off new qeustions. John_Spirko: I have a material that might be the basis of what he needs Ringo: posted that one in the wrong room. MetaJohn: url John? DonaldSGriffin: If you could explain the three controls on the light edit panel I would be happy. John_Spirko: http://www.iaw.on.ca/~jspirko/spiraljourney.htm the small red and gold balls Meta AuntiAlias: the edit light dialog box? DonaldSGriffin: John, I am at dgriffin@computer-music.com if you would care to send it. Meta AuntiAlias: sure... lessee... there's the intensity one (hmm.. maybe I should launch bryce, just to make sure that I'm not lying!) John_Spirko: Will do - soon as I find it :-) Meta AuntiAlias: which makes your light shine brighter (higher positive number) or, when it's negative, is a negative light and acts like black hole, sucking light from the scene DonaldSGriffin: I gotr intensity but the other things seem to interact wierdly. Meta AuntiAlias: the lower left control works with certain lights, (spotlights) Meta AuntiAlias: controlling how soft or hard their edges are... badapple: ! ahhh DonaldSGriffin: OH, not with all lights? Meta AuntiAlias: radial light, no, there's no edge to it, so there's no need to soften it.. upper right is display... and there's acolor swatch DonaldSGriffin: OHHH there was a wasted hour. Meta AuntiAlias: cool stuff also in the pop-up menu... to change whehter light is visible, whether it's infinite, volume, how the falloff is MetaJohn: That is where you select you light type Ringo: can we try spherical lights and put a texture on it? or gel? DonaldSGriffin: No gel, just colored it I set all the color swatches to RED for example. demjohn: i didn't miss my call, did i? i was pre-typing my question in simple text, so that i can fire it off right away when it's my turn Meta AuntiAlias: And there are also a coupla control at the bottom of the dialog box. There is where you add gels, from either the materials library (for texture gel) or pictures library (for piecture gels) MetaJohn: Not yet DJ demjohn: metaJ: cool. thanks badapple: ! You know I have been thinking that one could do a semi-automatic teaching bryce lab by setting bryce as helper app in browser then having it play with scene files.... does this sound interesting? DonaldSGriffin: So texture means light versus dark... Meta AuntiAlias: We have a queue here, folks.... DonaldSGriffin: and picture means color filter, like a slide right? Meta AuntiAlias: altho this is open mic night...please don't stand up when someone else has the mic.. rightnow it's Donald's turn! texture assigns the color, yes, and when the color is dark, then no light (or less light) shines... MetaJohn: I think we got you covered Donald? Meta AuntiAlias: yes, a slide is good analogy so, let me take a look at the queue.. DonaldSGriffin: hasta do, there's a line growing thanks. Meta AuntiAlias: Buddy's next! NOW NOW NOW! Buddy, go for it Buddy: I know you said you answered this in the lobby but I missed it. Why hasn't last weeks Bryce Talk "SKIES" transcript been posted yet? I missed that one. Meta AuntiAlias: ; ) did you look on the web site for it? Buddy: yes Meta AuntiAlias: it has been there since last week MtnCub: grrr.. @#$ computer Meta AuntiAlias: last friday night I post the url in each email that I send out for chat announcements Buddy: last one listed is Q&A with engineers. Reflash: refresh Meta AuntiAlias: http://www.metacreations.com/products/bryce4/talk/events.cfm demjohn, you're next!!! Buddy: I did Shift/refresh demjohn: ok. here goes: ok, so i used to live in Boulder/Denver, CO, and i want to make a mountain texure where (relative to altitude) the bottom 1/3 is brown, dirty scrubland w/ sage and such, and the middle 1/3 is large stands of dark green very tall pine trees, Buddy: I'll try it Susan. Thanks. demjohn: , and the top 1/3 is mostly glaciers, hanging glaciers, snowfields, and some barren tundra plants and rock... my problem is that i need the snow/ice to correspond to steep slopes and high altitudes, but anytime i get the snow/ice to go like that, the scrub Meta AuntiAlias: http://www.metacreations.com/products/bryce4/talk/logs/072299-1.cfm MetaJohn: Ah the FlatIrons demjohn: land/pinetrees turn into huge low-frequency random patches of green and brown that look terrible...no matter how much detail or frequency i add to them...i've been trying to create a real mountain texture a la colorado since bryce 1.0 in 1994, and i still haven't succeded... hope that's intelligible Meta AuntiAlias: People patiently waiting in line for da open microphone: 3D elf, MtnCub, Hoot, tommy, badapple, demjohn: i usually put the brown dirt-stuff in component 1, the dark green trees in comp. 2, and the snow in comp 3, and experiment with the blending modes, but like i said, after 5 years of trying, i still haven't gotten it right Meta AuntiAlias: demjohn, this sounds like you ened to do more than component 1, 2, 3 but also do something with texture source A B and C demjohn: the above components refer to the deep texture editor Meta AuntiAlias: where you ahve two different textures in A & B and have C mix between them Meta AuntiAlias: or maybe not.. it's hard, to go based simply on the description.... NEWBEE: anyone know where I can pick up a good free soldier character model for poser.....perferabe WWII? Meta AuntiAlias: w/o seeing the texture itself.... For those of you who've just joined us, we have a queue... a line... NEWBEE: can ray Dream do the same landscape effects as bryce? Meta AuntiAlias: People patiently waiting in line for da open microphone: 3D elf, MtnCub, Hoot, tommy, badapple, Newbee demjohn: AA: i've tried variations of that too, with 1,2,3 in A, B, and C...but i have a hard time matching the light properties (ambient, diffuse, spec., etc.) to what i've seen in real life Meta AuntiAlias: Newbee I added you to the line. Until I call on you, kindly refrain from posting. demjohn has the floor! :D I don' tthink, with this rambunctious crowd, that I can figure out enough to tell you an intelligible answer put the current material on a sphere and send me just the bryce scene file for that... mebbe we can work it out that way Meta AuntiAlias: getting it to look exactly right is difficult. demjohn: AA: ok. i'll try doing that now. if having B4 and BT open at the same times crashes my machine, i'll bb shortly to send it to you. MetaJohn: Cool now who, Susan? Meta AuntiAlias: 3D elf you're on! demjohn: AA: whenever you have a chance to check it out and let me know what you think, that would be way cool. AA: thanks 8) Meta AuntiAlias: Open Mic night in BryceTalk.. what's on your mind.. Bryce, Meta-related... to get in line and stand up to da microphone, please type "?" or "!" Meta AuntiAlias: : ) demjohn... Meta AuntiAlias: 3d elf? Gigabyte: hi Meta AuntiAlias: yoo hoo! you here? Gigabyte: ?
