BryceTalk Tues Sky Blue Discussion, July 27, 01999
Part 3

FSUGary: <perked up>

Mother: It seems to me that the light normally has a fog effect. Is this a clue?

Meta AuntiAlias: in that there is moisture in the air that picks up the light...

yes

several options for that

1- total fake it method (faster render time)

create cone

hang on , I'm looking for material in mat library

Jeffric: its called Lit Rays, in the Complex FX library

Meta AuntiAlias: there you are!

beat me to it!

okay....

FSUGary: hehe

Meta AuntiAlias: and youc an then adjust the overall transparency, too

FSUGary: each cone represents a ray?

Meta AuntiAlias: no....

FSUGary: k

Meta AuntiAlias: i fyou aren't in bryce now, launch it and check it out...

FSUGary: the mat?

ok

Meta AuntiAlias: once you create cone and assign the material, it's pretty self explanatory

FSUGary: I see

DOH! (to me)

Meta AuntiAlias: okay... that's method 1....

JeffP: ...

Meta AuntiAlias: also... you can make a volumetric light

FSUGary: that's what I would want to do

Meta AuntiAlias: volume visible light.. that shines from behind the cloud...

FSUGary: would I use a spotlight for that?

Meta AuntiAlias: make sure that you make spotlight origin (the center part) behind the cloud

since light emanates from the center of the light

FSUGary: uh huh

Meta AuntiAlias: so.. volume visible and infinite light

FSUGary: falloff?

Meta AuntiAlias: then the clouds themselves cast the shadows....

FSUGary: linear?

or does it even matter?

Meta AuntiAlias: Gary, I trust that you can do some experimenting with this on your own...

you got all tehse options you're considering! cool!

try 'em out and tell us what you find out!

FSUGary: ok, thought it was part of the "recipe" :)

Meta AuntiAlias: :D

heck, I dunno

Mother: This is great!

eilif: dammit I hate to be late on this!

Meta AuntiAlias: I tell you about the parts that I know about off da top of my head, and you get to figure out the rest! ; )

FSUGary: I think I am set

Mother: The hairs are standing up on the back of my artms. :)

Meta AuntiAlias: Journeyman seems to have left us...

but he has a great set o tips on volume lights

soemthing htat he does.. which takes way way longer

jonjon: bring 'im back!

Meta AuntiAlias: is to use just a regular light... in a Volume WOrld

I got an easier method than that.

read the log from the light chat!

prolly within the last month or so

http://www5.metacreations.com/products/bryce4/talk/events.cfm

Mother: I've ripped the whole series. I'll go back and check.

Meta AuntiAlias: ripped? hm. well.. never mind...

so...

Mother: Teleport Pro. :)

Meta AuntiAlias: anyway, any more cloud/sunbeam questions? suggestions? success stories?

jahann: hey meta... could i possibly get your material you use for grass in sunbeam.jpg?

jonjon: git

PJF88: charmed, I'm sure.

Jeffric: hi PJF

Meta AuntiAlias: ? jahan, I don't follow you. greets, PJF.. we're just finishing up discussion about clouds and sunbeams

: )

here was another question:

I am trying to create a very stormy sky and the normal plane is just not full enough.. too flat!

solution: Slab and spheres !

you all know how to make an infinite slab, right?

eilif: ?

PJF88: thanks AA

Meta AuntiAlias: slab creation: on Create palette.. hold down option key or alt key when you click the sky infinite plane.

eilif: not my q....

Meta AuntiAlias: look for mo' better volume stuff with clouds soon!!

eilif, we tossed out a bunch of questions at the beginning, so I'm also going from that list, too....

eilif: k

Meta AuntiAlias: if you came later, it prolly seems *way* outta context! : )3

eilif: just got here, forgot, dammit

Meta AuntiAlias: no problem...

Meta AuntiAlias: anyway...

what's your question, eilif!

eilif: anyone ever use photos for cheating, take cloud pix?

ccasady: sure

Meta AuntiAlias: oh, that's right.. and somone asked about using terrains, too...

eilif: I see some awesome cotton ones lately

Mother: Yup. Great for textures too.

Meta AuntiAlias: greets, Chris! we're talking bout skies and clouds...

ccasady: Col!

or Cool!

Meta AuntiAlias: who here DOES use pictures for cheating? or.. perhaps.. what exactly is a cheat? compositing a real sky with a bryce scene?

do tell!

I'm all ears! :D

Mother: Using the real thing makes up for a lack of imagination on my part.

dcb_: do nebulae pictures count?

eilif: well, I cheat with photos and dull white skies, put in a nice blue one in photoshop

ccasady: When it just *has* to look real and photgraphic, I use a sky pict.

creativejuice: for gallaxies and nebula

eilif: I sometimes take pix just for that purpose, scan them and keep them handy...

Meta AuntiAlias: uh.. fotos dull white skies... you doin' any of this in Bryce, eilif? or do I not understand enough of your method?

eilif: I use it for photos, so I was thinking of doing it to bryce pix too

like http://www.fantopia.com/1024/sample1.html

Meta AuntiAlias: 404

dcb_: fyi...for incredible high resolution images to use as background picts for your space scenes http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html

eilif: great, one pic didn't make it

jonjon: ?

diff subject

CBXTX: OżO

ccasady: Anybofy know where top get good free Sky pictures?

Meta AuntiAlias: web cams? maybe?

ccasady: Somtimes the Image banks put free samples on the web

I know I've seen some before

Meta AuntiAlias: jon jon, what's your question?

jonjon: Can you adjust stratus clouds and cumulus clouds seperately? I mean in the sky lab. It seems to be just one height etc setting for all. kind of annoying.

ccasady: Kinda wish I'd bookmarked those!

Meta AuntiAlias: alas, jon jon, they're tied together.... : (

jonjon: and retain the sep settings I mean

Meta AuntiAlias: tho, you can, if you edit the material, do some separate cheats

ccasady: yes, they are tied together

True,

jonjon: Wot a pain. It would increase flexibility to split em

Oh well, cloud plains. . .

Meta AuntiAlias: for instance, frequency is tied to altitude.... so you can cheat that way by changing the underlying frequency of the cloud texture

eilif: maybe they are linked in reality, any meteorologists here?

jonjon: ooh

ccasady: You could adjust the frequency seperatly, that would help

Mother: Here's a thought. Can you import DEM files and use them as clouds? Some of the super cell clouds look a lot like terrains.

jonjon: I bet there's a good boring reason

ccasady: Hey! Good idea!

Here's another one:

eilif: yes, flat on the bottom, fluffy on top

ccasady: Some of my most interesting Terrains, Have been actually renders of Skies turned into Terrains!

Great organic mountains

Mother: I'm beginning to see what my problem is...lack of lateral thinking.

Meta AuntiAlias: : ) Mother

ccasady: Hmmm. What's "lateral" thinking, prey tell

jonjon: I've tried cloud terrains with vol and non vol materials but nothing quite works like a good ol sphere, annoying cos fractal terrains are so suitably cauliflowery.

ccasady: yes, the new Cauliflower trrains are tempting to experiment with as clouds

I tried one as a bump for clouds...

eilif: maybe duplicate them a couple times, change the settings on each a bit?

jonjon: the material doesn't 'sit' right some how, the form still looks spikey somehow

i tried duplicate, enlarge and set to aadditive still no joy

Meta AuntiAlias: I did see someone do a scene that used terrains for clouds.. in the distance...

they were "upright"

great puffy ones...

a sorta cartoony looking scene, or sky...

Meta AuntiAlias: but it worked well.. can't remember the url, tho

eilif: I'll have to try that

jonjon: I want Marge Simpson's hair type clouds!

eilif: those are the kind i've been photographing!

lately

jonjon: Wot green?

Meta AuntiAlias: if you use cloud terrains as volumes, make sure that the terrain is set to solid!

eilif: shape

Meta AuntiAlias: oh.. before I forget....

a reminder announcement...

AuntiAlias: this is from KPT Joseph..

who was here earlier

ANNOUNCEMENT: Joseph Linaschke, International Evangelist for MetaCreations is looking to hire a new Evangelisto in Europe!!!

REQUIREMENTS: Live in/around Paris, speak French & English well enough to demo in, have no fear of stages, and have a technical and perferably artistic background.

eilif: what does such a one do?

AuntiAlias: Travel, Fame and Fortune guaranteed (well, two of three maybe!) Contact josephl@metacreations.com

eilif: I only want fortune

Morpheus: 2 aunti's at the same time?

Mother: Sounds like work. :)

eilif: French - that leaves me out

Meta AuntiAlias: yeah, MOrpheus, had crashing problems, so I got a backup "presence" in case this one flakes out again

eilif: I hate Paris

Morpheus: ahhh

Mother: Je parle le Francais.

And I also hate Paris.

Meta AuntiAlias: well..... send email to Joseph if you're interested....

or tell friends whom you think might be interested to get in touch with Joseph! :D

eilif: I'm the only brycer in this country i think

Clay: LOL

Meta AuntiAlias: I'm *not* the only Brycer in this country! ; )

Mother: Being in canada, I only do winter scenes. :)

Mindscenes: LOL Aunti

Mother: Are we finished?

Meta AuntiAlias: wow.. we might've reached the 80 minute time out time for all da lurkers!

I'm looking at the list of questions.. there were some about comets...

dcb_: :) not yet

eilif: must've been captivating

Mother: Mass exodus.

Clay: heheh

Morpheus: ? now that I'm here

Betty: and some of us were late : )

Mother: Fire drill.
