BryceTalk Tues Sky Blue Discussion, July 27, 01999
Part 2

AuntiAlias: I'm looking at the directory with FTP right now to try to see what might be wrong...

Gigabyte: susan, you here under two names?

AuntiAlias: I was.. the other machine went kablooie

Gigabyte: oh

AuntiAlias: so... let me see if I can get just straight to the movie file

AuntiAlias: okay....

http://www5.metacreations.com/products/bryce4/ images/talk/movies/ColorPerspect-Gray2colr-sor.mov

not so pretty....

you need quicktime 3/4 to view this, as it's saved with sorenson...

Mother: Drip, drip drip....56k.

renato!: not going much faster here, with a cable modem

sandman: So, Gary, you work in graphics locally?

FSUGary: well kinda ..

renato!: hmm, nice demo

FSUGary: I am in school righ now finishing my second degree (computer science)

AuntiAlias: so....

that was pretty much all of Ken's blurb about color perspective...

FSUGary: I have a job with the state that I do graphics/programming ... list goes on and on ...

Mother: Looks all the same to me.

AuntiAlias: but.. we ARE working on a more comprehensive tutorial for it which will be posted to the web site. The page that was 404 on you is the beginning of it, as the example

Mother: Colour blind. :0

FSUGary: 404 is an ok number to start with <g>

AuntiAlias: here's da caption...

In this 31-frame animation, Color Perspective starts out as gray (R G and B

values are all 15). At the end of the animation, the Color Perspective settings

contain no red, a little bit of green and maximum blue.

FSUGary: how about you sandman?

AuntiAlias: See how Color Perspective alters the color of objects in the scene. In this case, light objects turn yellow, and dark objects turn blue.

so.... basically the idea for now, just to get you started with experimenting...

in the Sky Lab, go to the Atmosphere section.... turn your haze a neutral gray color

sandman: Gotta print graphics design studio. Do our own color output.

AuntiAlias: then turn color perspective on, and adjsut the colors.

FSUGary: wow cool

AuntiAlias: natural is to have blue high

unnatural....

AuntiAlias: say.. who was it who was asking about making realistic unnatural skies?

; )

<evil grin>

Beartrap: :)

been playing there already :)

AuntiAlias: the trick is in the coloring....

AuntiAlias: also... you DO know that you can have your Sky Lab preview show you your scene, right?

sandman: Ajberni asked about intense skies, I believe

AuntiAlias: in the pop-up menu there's that option.

It comes in VERY handy at points like these, and you can see what's going on with changes in color perspective quite nicely

FSUGary: hehe

sandman: AA- is this stuff in your new book?

Meta AuntiAlias: whew!

so....

Meta AuntiAlias: other than Color Perspective, where were we with topics?

one that is related to this is the one about ambient/sky dome color

Meta AuntiAlias: sky dome color imitates what happens when light is scattered through the atmosphere, and it "falls from above"

sandman: You had just mentioned previewing from the Sky Lab, and I had asked if this stuff was in your new book. ;-)

Meta AuntiAlias: hee hee hee.. yeah, I think so ; )

but.. not here to talk about book right now so much as to talk about Bryce :D

so, you can be in shadow, or the dark, or dusk, and light can fall from above...

the way that sky dome color is controlled is that the darkness or lightness of a color is the amount of light from above...

and the hue is the color of the light that shines..

Mother: Can you isolate this into a single spot in the scene?

Meta AuntiAlias: for selecting the sky dome color, I like to use the option or alt key to click the color swatch and select a method that allows me to change value/brightness and to change hue/saturation separately

no, it's a global thing

so.... default state of that is "off" .. or black

now.. ambient color is this...

it's the color of light that is "everywhere" in Bryce world...

default is white,.. but more realistic for outdoor scenes is gray or blue

think of Ambient color as the color of your shadows... or shows up most clearly when objects are in shadow

Gigabyte: ?

Meta AuntiAlias: the problem with ambient color being white is that shadows in your scene tend to look washed out

Yes, Gigabyte?

is this re: shadow/ambient/sky dome color? : )

Gigabyte: what might cause a scene to not have shadows

?

Meta AuntiAlias: shadow amount setting.. can be set to 0

Gigabyte: where is that setting?

Meta AuntiAlias: also, if you have lights, you have option to make them cast or not cast shadows

Meta AuntiAlias: and.. for each object in your scene, in Materials COmposer, there are settings for whether the object casts shadows or receives shadows cast by others, or has self shadowing

Mother: Question.

Gigabyte: ok

thanx

Meta AuntiAlias: gigabyte, in Sky n Fog palette, I believe it's the 2nd one over from the left......

Gigabyte: k

Meta AuntiAlias: Mother, what's your question?

Mother: If I wanted to show the sun breaking through a hole in the clouds and casting light on an area of the ground....

Jeffric: thanks Aunti, I think I understand the sky dome / ambient colour thing now, possibly :-)

Meta AuntiAlias: cool, Jeffric! :D

Mother: Sort of a hand of God thing. :)

Meta AuntiAlias: oh.. sorry. saw the "..." and thought that you were still typing more3

Mother: Always...

:)

Meta AuntiAlias: well.. that leads to the next set of topics, which is clouds....

Gigabyte: couldn't you put in a light with volume visible light enabled?

Meta AuntiAlias: how bout we fold that in with the others?

Mother: OK

FSUGary: clouds!!! yaya (wakes up again)

lol

Meta AuntiAlias: here are the cloud topics I got

Clouds:

-how about a little of that good 'ol cloud action

-can you rotate the clouds around your sky? if you have a scene you have but the perfect part of sky is behind you, can you rotate it?

-How about clouds casting shadows too

-clouds and sun thru clouds "hand of God"

Meta AuntiAlias: err.. whoever asked that "good ol cloud action:... uh... you got more specific questions?

oh, and also

FSUGary: yup I do

Meta AuntiAlias: - stormy skies

and too flat clouds.

FSUGary: I was wondering about making whispy type clouds that almost reach outta the picture and smack you in the face

Gigabyte: gotta go...cya

FSUGary: I have messed around with the sphere, but to no avail

Meta AuntiAlias: You know, I haven't tried that rotate stuff to get certain portion of clouds in sky in front...

FSUGary: also the sun's rays effect that mother brought up :)

Meta AuntiAlias: there's link clouds to view...

(hang on let me launch Bryce...)

FSUGary: k

Meta AuntiAlias: you DO know that you can be in Bryce and BryceTalk simultaneously, don't you?

shift T in Bryce brings BryceTalk to front

FSUGary: me?

yeah

Meta AuntiAlias: hee hee hee! I was addressing everyone...

FSUGary: okey dokey <G>

Meta AuntiAlias: The one thing I see is LInk Clouds to View and Fixed Cloudplane.... if you know the killer clouds are "behind" you, how did you see them there in the first place?

for this rotation stuff?

(this is directed at the person who had the question... ) also.. if anyone else has worked with this kinda situation and has anything to offer... please! step right up and tell us!

Mother: This Bryce Talk needs a Keep on Top option.

Meta AuntiAlias: seems like "Fixed Cloudplane" mostly will 'stop' a sky from animating if you have it checked

okay... so.. no elaboration on the rotate clouds around...

FSUGary: I think he left

Jeffric: OK, you can link the sun to the camera, set the camera options to tripod and rotate it around to see clouds from different angles, keeps the sun at the angle you set it but lets you find a nice cloudscape to render

Meta AuntiAlias: aaah!

so.. once you find the cloudscape you want, bring it to the front by "link clouds to view" ?

in the Sky Lab

Jeffric: erm, not sure, never got that far, jut rendered the view I ended up with !

Meta AuntiAlias: haven't tried it, tho......

well... it's the thought I had for how to get the sky in front...

I guess.. you'd then lock it in with a memory dot

Jeffric: the link clouds to view should work though

Meta AuntiAlias: depends, perhaps on whether the scene is an animation or still image

next topic was clouds casting shadows.....

you can, of course, set clouds to cast shadows in the Sky Lab

the button is right there, just above "Link Clouds to View" in lower left corner of Sky Lab/Clouds section

Meta AuntiAlias: I've noticed that it's not always a full sunlight/full shadow situaation

when the shadows are there...

Jeffric: every time I've had cloud shadow casting on I just get huge globs of shadow that seem to cover everything, not the lovely wispy cloudy looking shadows I expected

Meta AuntiAlias: to do that, Jeffric, you have to adjust your clouds....

can adjust amplitude to make more contrast also cloud cover tends to make cloud formations weightier or thinner....

anyone else worked with this? have your experience to tell about?

Jeffric: aaaaah !!! <finally it all falls into place with a dull thud>

Meta AuntiAlias: what fell into place?

: )

Jeffric: the whole ambient / skydome / cloudy thing !

Meta AuntiAlias: : )

Meta AuntiAlias: on a different topic of clouds and shadows......

there are at least two other ways for clouds to cast shadows...

an infinite clouds plane

will cast shadows...

Meta AuntiAlias: and spheres or slabs with cloud materials applied to them will also cast shadows....

re: the hand of god thing....

I'd suggest the spheres way to go

it takes patience and cunning...

Mother: Clear as mud.

Meta AuntiAlias: and soon...

it will be better! ; )

dcb_: may i interject something AA?

Jeffric: depending on the angle of the sun I sometimes put spheres with cloud material on just out of the camera view to cast cloud shadows

Meta AuntiAlias: please!

dcb.. go for it!

dcb_: I updated my cloud tutorial

Meta AuntiAlias: what's the URL? : )

jonjon: URL?

dcb_: it has a sphere cloud that b4 users can download to see how it works

http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Program/3093/ tutor/bryce/cloud.html

FSUGary: thanks :)

Meta AuntiAlias: very cool. Mother, I think this will help you out

also.. an old trick of mine....

(which you see in Planetary Traveler.. a scene with light rays comign out of a cloud, done long before there were volumetric lights or anything like that)

Mother: I'm all ears.

Meta AuntiAlias: depending on viewer angle, cloud, and sun position.....

make your freestanding set of clouds, like the one thats dbc just pointed out in her tutorial....

then.. duplicate them!

and move them "back" from the first set of clouds, toward the sun

this is.. of course, away from the camera...

Jeffric: I've got a 'sunbeam example here http://www.i-pdesign.demon.co.uk/gallery/sunbeam.jpg

Meta AuntiAlias: only a little bit of edge of clouds show, since they're blocked from view by most of the other clouds

so...

in Materials Lab, make those second set of clouds Additive

that'll make them "glow" at the edges...

the silver lining, as it were

; )

Mother, are you more interested in the way to form the clouds, or to get the beams of light?

or both?

Mother: I'll play with it for a while. Sounds like a ton o' fun!

It's more of an "atmosphere" thing.

jonjon: Anyone had any luck with terrains as clouds, either volumetric or otherwise?

FSUGary: I'd be interested in the rays ( beams )

Meta AuntiAlias: Here's how I did my first bits of rays
