Meta AuntiAlias: err.. whoever asked that "good ol cloud action:... uh... you got more specific questions? oh, and also FSUGary: yup I do Meta AuntiAlias: - stormy skies and too flat clouds. FSUGary: I was wondering about making whispy type clouds that almost reach outta the picture and smack you in the face Gigabyte: gotta go...cya FSUGary: I have messed around with the sphere, but to no avail Meta AuntiAlias: You know, I haven't tried that rotate stuff to get certain portion of clouds in sky in front... FSUGary: also the sun's rays effect that mother brought up :) Meta AuntiAlias: there's link clouds to view... (hang on let me launch Bryce...) FSUGary: k Meta AuntiAlias: you DO know that you can be in Bryce and BryceTalk simultaneously, don't you? shift T in Bryce brings BryceTalk to front FSUGary: me? yeah Meta AuntiAlias: hee hee hee! I was addressing everyone... FSUGary: okey dokey <G> Meta AuntiAlias: The one thing I see is LInk Clouds to View and Fixed Cloudplane.... if you know the killer clouds are "behind" you, how did you see them there in the first place? for this rotation stuff? (this is directed at the person who had the question... ) also.. if anyone else has worked with this kinda situation and has anything to offer... please! step right up and tell us! Mother: This Bryce Talk needs a Keep on Top option. Meta AuntiAlias: seems like "Fixed Cloudplane" mostly will 'stop' a sky from animating if you have it checked okay... so.. no elaboration on the rotate clouds around... FSUGary: I think he left Jeffric: OK, you can link the sun to the camera, set the camera options to tripod and rotate it around to see clouds from different angles, keeps the sun at the angle you set it but lets you find a nice cloudscape to render Meta AuntiAlias: aaah! so.. once you find the cloudscape you want, bring it to the front by "link clouds to view" ? in the Sky Lab Jeffric: erm, not sure, never got that far, jut rendered the view I ended up with ! Meta AuntiAlias: haven't tried it, tho...... well... it's the thought I had for how to get the sky in front... I guess.. you'd then lock it in with a memory dot Jeffric: the link clouds to view should work though Meta AuntiAlias: depends, perhaps on whether the scene is an animation or still image next topic was clouds casting shadows..... you can, of course, set clouds to cast shadows in the Sky Lab the button is right there, just above "Link Clouds to View" in lower left corner of Sky Lab/Clouds section Meta AuntiAlias: I've noticed that it's not always a full sunlight/full shadow situaation when the shadows are there... Jeffric: every time I've had cloud shadow casting on I just get huge globs of shadow that seem to cover everything, not the lovely wispy cloudy looking shadows I expected Meta AuntiAlias: to do that, Jeffric, you have to adjust your clouds.... can adjust amplitude to make more contrast also cloud cover tends to make cloud formations weightier or thinner.... anyone else worked with this? have your experience to tell about? Jeffric: aaaaah !!! <finally it all falls into place with a dull thud> Meta AuntiAlias: what fell into place? : ) Jeffric: the whole ambient / skydome / cloudy thing ! Meta AuntiAlias: : ) Meta AuntiAlias: on a different topic of clouds and shadows...... there are at least two other ways for clouds to cast shadows... an infinite clouds plane will cast shadows... Meta AuntiAlias: and spheres or slabs with cloud materials applied to them will also cast shadows.... re: the hand of god thing.... I'd suggest the spheres way to go it takes patience and cunning... Mother: Clear as mud. Meta AuntiAlias: and soon... it will be better! ; ) dcb_: may i interject something AA? Jeffric: depending on the angle of the sun I sometimes put spheres with cloud material on just out of the camera view to cast cloud shadows Meta AuntiAlias: please! dcb.. go for it! dcb_: I updated my cloud tutorial Meta AuntiAlias: what's the URL? : ) jonjon: URL? dcb_: it has a sphere cloud that b4 users can download to see how it works http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Program/3093/ tutor/bryce/cloud.html FSUGary: thanks :) Meta AuntiAlias: very cool. Mother, I think this will help you out also.. an old trick of mine.... (which you see in Planetary Traveler.. a scene with light rays comign out of a cloud, done long before there were volumetric lights or anything like that) Mother: I'm all ears. Meta AuntiAlias: depending on viewer angle, cloud, and sun position..... make your freestanding set of clouds, like the one thats dbc just pointed out in her tutorial.... then.. duplicate them! and move them "back" from the first set of clouds, toward the sun this is.. of course, away from the camera... Jeffric: I've got a 'sunbeam example here http://www.i-pdesign.demon.co.uk/gallery/sunbeam.jpg Meta AuntiAlias: only a little bit of edge of clouds show, since they're blocked from view by most of the other clouds so... in Materials Lab, make those second set of clouds Additive that'll make them "glow" at the edges... the silver lining, as it were ; ) Mother, are you more interested in the way to form the clouds, or to get the beams of light? or both? Mother: I'll play with it for a while. Sounds like a ton o' fun! It's more of an "atmosphere" thing. jonjon: Anyone had any luck with terrains as clouds, either volumetric or otherwise? FSUGary: I'd be interested in the rays ( beams ) Meta AuntiAlias: Here's how I did my first bits of rays
