BryceTalk Tues Sky Blue Discussion, July 27, 01999

Meta AuntiAlias: Greetings, everyone!!

Time to discuss Blue Skies and Bryce Skies and Other Skies! :D

How about we start it off with everyone tossing in "what I'd really like to know about Bryce skies"

that way we can develop an agenda to make sure that we cover the common stuff.....

so... please, toss out your Sky-wanna-know-requests! :D

::::tap tap tap:::: Is this thing on?

Clay: heheh

Jeffric: Colour perspective, whats it all about ?!!!!

Meta AuntiAlias: : )

we'll talk about that...

more, more!

Clay: Comets...pros and cons.....

Meta AuntiAlias: what other questions do you have? There are 11 people in here right now... don't be shy!

Journeyman: hi guys

Meta AuntiAlias: Greets, Janak! We're all tossing out "what I'd like to know about Bryce Skies" to develop an agenda for this session....

Jeffric: I found a Bryce sky problem today, I have an example image but I'd like to know whats causing it !!!

Journeyman: Hey Susan. Just an idea for next week or sometime, you could make a session called Post Render Secrets or something

Meta AuntiAlias: Great! Everyone here already KNOWS everything they want to know about skies...

Journeyman: because some people have some good post render ideas that could be useful to everyone <shutting up now>

Meta AuntiAlias: now you're here to just dish the dirt to the one or two people here who have a question....

; )

this makes my job easy today. Good! :D

Clay: :-)

Meta AuntiAlias: heather... nothing you want to know about skies?

Heather: I'm just going to listen

Meta AuntiAlias: Mindscenes.. you have any druthers about what you'd like to know about Bryce skies?

anything on your "gee, I really I wish I knew more about....." list

Beartrap: how about realistic unreal skies?

Meta AuntiAlias: : )

okay.. we got three topics so far.

Color Perspective

Comets: pro and con

and realistic unreal skies

Mindscenes: hmmmm..... how about how to effectively use the Vornoi noises as cloud textures?

FSUGary: how about a little of that good 'ol cloud action

Clay: jeff had a sky prob too

KPT Joseph: comets - can you animate them?

Meta AuntiAlias: aaaah.. clouds! : )

FSUGary: that's what I could use ...

:)

clouds = MUCHO IMPORTANT- ..o

KPT Joseph: Sky Color Perspective - perhaps an explanation of that would do people good. It's so tiny but powerful

FSUGary: that would be great!

Journeyman: Here is another question, can you rotate the clouds around your sky? if you have a scene you have but the perfect part of sky is behind you, can you rotate it?

Meta AuntiAlias: the crowd is warming up! :D

FSUGary: more like waking up

Meta AuntiAlias: lol

FSUGary: kidding

Jeffric: lol

Journeyman: <rubs his eyes "Eh?">

FSUGary: heheh

Clay: heheh

Meta AuntiAlias: plus a whole lotta new people just arriving

well, here's what we've been doing so far...

tossing out "topics about skies I'd like to know more about"

Journeyman: How about clouds casting shadows too

does anyone use that? does it give a more realistic effect?

Jeffric: whats the connection between ambient colour and sky dome colour in the sky palettes?

Meta AuntiAlias: <--has a nice small test animation of nothing more than animation of clouds casting shadows

ooh! Bingo! technical questions about sky dome color and ambient color!

::::rubs hands together in glee :::;

Jeffric: lol

Clay: LOL

FSUGary: wild bunch today :)

Meta AuntiAlias: Okay....

let me paste back the list I've been collecting here...

Color Perspective

Comets: pro and con

and realistic unreal skies

how about a little of that good 'ol cloud action

jeff had a sky prob too

comets - can you animate them?

FSUGary: must have caffeine...

Meta AuntiAlias: rotate the clouds around your sky?

How about clouds casting shadows too

whats the connection between ambient colour and sky dome colour in the sky palettes?

I think that's enough to get us going..... : )

I'm gonna do some re-pasting of some explanation that Ken Musgrave (Dr. Mojo) did while discussing color perspective the other night...

Color perspective is the change of colors with distance due tothe atmosphere. Dark areas turn blue and light areas yellow, then range, then red, with distance (for the same reasons the sky is blue and sunsets are red--too complicated to go into here)

yow.. I'm getting crashy here...

may have to leave and return

FSUGary: uh oh ... me too

ajberni: Hello all, may I ask a sky question?

FSUGary: must be contagious

:)

Journeyman: It was Mojo who said that last time

Meta AuntiAlias: sure.. we just have been throwing out topics for consideration....

so toss yours into the pile. we'll go back to discussing Color Perspective

ajberni: I am trying to create a very stormy sky and the normal plane is just not full enough.. too flat!

Meta AuntiAlias: k.. added to the list. we'll also talk about clouds, so it'll go into that

ajberni: great, thanks

Meta AuntiAlias: say... while I'm deaing with my technical crash-and-restart issues...

Joseph has an announcement to make!

KPT Joseph: what a lead in!

;-)

first, allow me to introduce myself..

I am the International Evangelist for MetaCreations, based in Europe handling the EMEA region

that's Europe, Middle East, and Africa

KPT Joseph: I am in need of hiring someone new in my region!!!

FSUGary: <ears stick up

KPT Joseph: What I need is someone first off who lives in or around Paris....

FSUGary: <ears droop down> :)

KPT Joseph: speaks French and English fluently (or well enough to present in both languages)...

Journeyman: only two people I know of there

Phil3D and... someone else whos name I forget

KPT Joseph: has an artistic and technical background, and isn't afraid to get on stage and be cool!!!

Journeyman: around there anyway

KPT Joseph: travel, fame, and fortune will be yours!! Well, two out of three, but you don't get to know which two until you start ;-)

Sumo: Sounds like Charles Aznavour would fit the bill.

Jeffric: lol

AuntiAlias: lol re: 2 outta 3

KPT Joseph: OK, I don't know any of those folks.... if you could pass the word around, that would be great

AuntiAlias: and.. how can people reach you, Joseph?

KPT Joseph: have anyone intersted Email me at josephl@metacreations.com

I was getting there ;-)

Journeyman: alright will do Joseph

sandman: Joseph, I do some beta stuff and have some international contacts. What sort of software background do you want?

KPT Joseph: so, the position is for Evangelista, must live in/around Paris, speak French and English (any more is a bonus), and be willing to travel like mad!

background - Meta type, preferably ;-)

it's to show our software, so at least graphics background and the ability to learn new software fast if they don't have heavy Meta experience

sandman: Learn Meta fast? Sort of an oxymoron there, ain't it? ;-)

Journeyman: lol

KPT Joseph: hey now <g>

sandman: Sorry... I'm at the start of my own learning curve and couldn't let it pass. ;-)

Mother: G'day from The Great White North, eh! :)

Jeffric: hello Mother

Meta AuntiAlias: whew! back!

Journeyman: the great while north?

Journeyman: where are you Mother?

Mother: Yup.

Canada.

FSUGary: all okay now Aunti?

Journeyman: Where in canada?

Mother: Quebec.

Journeyman: Ontario here

sandman: Mother- if that be Canada, and you speak French, Joseph may have a deal for you if you'll scroll back a bit.

Mother: Actually, I'm Irish. :0

My wife is French.

Mother: Ya! Wife!

Mother is an old football nick.

KPT Joseph: sandman - remember, I need someone IN France, in or around Paris ;-)

sandman: How can you survive in Quebec and not speak French?

Gigabyte: hi

Mother: It's a burden, but I manage.

Meta AuntiAlias: okay.... gettin' ready to get back to skies...

thanks, Joseph!

Meta AuntiAlias: by the way, speaking of where people are, how about a GeoCheck?

KPT Joseph: Go Aunti, and thanks for the announcement... let me know when I can do it again!

Gigabyte: hi

Meta AuntiAlias: <--LA, CA area

renato!: arizona

Beartrap: London

sandman: Orlando

ffunm: Missouri

Jeffric: Hull, UK

Gigabyte: hi clay

Heather: Maryland

Gigabyte: CA

FSUGary: sandman wintersprings here

Andy21: Germany =)

FSUGary: in tallahassee now :)

Clay: Missouri

FSUGary: small world

Mindscenes: Kansas City

Meta AuntiAlias: : )

sandman: Gary- I wondered about the FSU, but you threw me with drinking coffee! ;-) (Casselberry)

Meta AuntiAlias: just about ready with my copy-and-paste of the wizard of Color Perspective, from Dr Ken (Mojo) Musgrave....

FSUGary: coffee?? ... nuh uh ... caffiene (coke) :)))))

muuuuuuuch better now :)

Meta AuntiAlias: okay... back to Color Perspective....

FSUGary: right <g>

Journeyman: Okay, so anyone here have any good skies on the internet?

Meta AuntiAlias: Ken put up a little write up about it on his web site

CBXTX: 8^)

Meta AuntiAlias: http://www.wizardnet.com/musgrave/4_persp.html (there are cool illustrations there, too)

Quoting from Ken....

Aerial perspective has two parts: atmospheric perspective and color perspective. The former is simply the loss in contrast with distance that a grey mist can provide. The latter is the shift in color with distance, which is far more subtle.

Meta AuntiAlias: The way they both work is this: First we get the color at the end of a ray, as when it hits a surface. Next we take the atmospheric color and partially substitute it in for the first, distant color, as a function of distance.

The greater the distance, the more atmosphere color is substituted in for the distance color. Altitude can also be a factor, as with Bryce's "fog," which is denser down low than up high.

So really close surfaces get virtually no atmospheric contribution, while really distant surfaces aren't seen at all--only the color of the atmosphere is seen. Both Bryce's "fog" and "mist" work this way.

Color perspective is the change of colors with distance due to the atmosphere. Dark areas turn blue and light areas yellow, then orange, then red, with distance (for the same reasons the sky is blue and sunsets are red--too complicated to go into here).

The controls for color perspective (CP) determine the rate at which the distant color is replaced with the color of the atmosphere for each of r, g and b, SEPARATELY. It's kinda bizarre and non-intuitive, but it IS that simple!

as Dr Mojo says... "Trust me." >;^)

sandman: ?

Smudger: hello

Meta AuntiAlias: greets! in the midst of a sky discussion...

KPT Joseph: hey smudger ;-)

Meta AuntiAlias: It turns out that to get white to turn red and black to turn blue (as we see in this spiffy animation at http://www.metacreations.com/products/bryce4/talk/movie_cp.cfm) ...

you need to start with a neutral grey atmosphere color, or something close to it. Too dark or light, and you lose one effect.

It has some really bizarre effects in Nature. It is why the sky is blue and sunsets are red.

Gigabyte: that URL wasn't found

sandman: 404

Smudger: I'm here

Meta AuntiAlias: yow.. hang on a sec...

Mother: High tech. Dont'ya LUV it?

AuntiAlias: boy.. speaking o yow, my other screen went completely blank...

sandman: Lose the Mac! ;-)

AuntiAlias: would someone save a copy fo the log so far (using the option or alt key clicking on the disk icon) and send it to me?

susank@metacreations.com

KPT Joseph: I got you covered Aunti
