Dr. Mojo: Now for a little cloud tease. Check out:

http://www.wizardnet.com/musgrave/cloud6.jpg

Dr. Mojo: These will be possible with the B4 update.

Yojimbo: Looks great!

can't wait

Calyxa: those are freestanding cloud spheres?

Dr. Mojo: And now, let me go ftp up the rendering that just finished. I think you will like it... Excuse me for a minute...

Wolfie: damn, that first one looks real as hell!

Sky Pilot: I'm in love!

Did you see those shadows?

camel: Yah it does!!:)

stiffkat: holy moly batman, those are fantastic (and you used my fav ground the wildflowers)

Wolfie: it isn't choppy like the current cloud tex are

Reflash: this is excellent !!!

Yojimbo: makes a nice dust cloud that one

camel: Whoa!!!

Sky Pilot: I swear I can see it move!

Yojimbo: hehe

renato!: simply fabulous

camel: That's the beer!!

Rosy: impressive

norm: Likewise and Ditto.

Wolfie: Well, I guess we are all giving wizardnet a good workout ;)

stiffkat: now watch everyone on the list screaming for the update :) LOL

JeffP: My jaw fell on the foor!!!!

norm: Now, THAT's a cloud to fly through!!

Meta AuntiAlias: now that's a cloud to bring your render to its knees!

renato!: hehe

Meta AuntiAlias: Ken, were these fast renders?

Yojimbo: lol

Sky Pilot: lol

Wolfie: we already ARE...I want my library categories!

stiffkat: rofl wolfie, i think that waits for 5 i read somewhere

Calyxa: don't hold your breath...

Wolfie: that first image had to be a render hog

Sky Pilot: Think so

Meta AuntiAlias: er... we're talkin' bout skies, tonight? there's only 1 sky category! ; )

Wolfie: krist...I been waiting and asking for that since BRYCE2

Dr. Mojo: Okay, have a look at:

http://www.wizardnet.com/musgrave/cloud7.jpg

stiffkat: wolfie ssssshhhhhh, we're upsetting the teacher. <g>

Meta AuntiAlias: er... Wolfie.. that was my attempt to sorta nudge you toward the TOPIC.. you know, like tonight's topic? SKies.. oh, I'll be quiet. Ken's continuing

Dr. Mojo: Same asa cloud6, but from the side.

Calyxa: cool, Ken

Dr. Mojo: I must say, I'm very happy with this!

Yojimbo: nice!

Meta AuntiAlias: wow!!!!

Cricket: How long to render?

Wolfie: why is the one in front of the mountin blue?

Yojimbo: I really like that side view

Rosy: nice

Sky Pilot: Ken, what is the material applied to?

Dr. Mojo: About as long as we been at it here!

It can be made much faster...

Yojimbo: 1 hour 30 mins?

ouch

Reflash: its a trex??

stiffkat: wow, that's not bad

Dr. Mojo: It's a volue texture applied to a sphere. New shading mode.

Calyxa: ahhh, thx

Sky Pilot: Cool!!

stiffkat: awesome shading mode

Cricket: Wow

camel: MMMM!!!

Yojimbo: none too shabby

Dr. Mojo: Volumes will always be slow, it's a fact of life. But they can be made much faster.

Cricket: I love the shading on the cloud edges!!!

Wolfie: well...do it!

Yojimbo: how so?

Sky Pilot: The edges were always the worst!

Dr. Mojo: So this will ship as presets (the cloud at least) on the B4 update.

stiffkat: Just my FYI, I don't think a couple of hours is unreasonable for THAT

Dr. Mojo: It takes a lot of work to get these things right!

And time!

Wolfie: Yea, the edges were the worst to get right

Meta AuntiAlias: hey! remember Bryce 1.0? just a basic scene took a few hours to render!

Sky Pilot: Decent price to pay

Meta AuntiAlias: now we get volume clouds for the same "price"

sowatsadealwitdat? I teenkeets fine!

Dr. Mojo: Yep, you always gotta pay the piper.

Wolfie: Couple hours is NOT an unreasonable time for that....not at all

stiffkat: me too aunti, me too

camel: That's way mass!!:)

3d~?~elf: what machine...for reference

norm: Well, at least now we'll all want B5, with its purported new render engine!

Reflash: b4 update a CD?? or download?

Dr. Mojo: Actually, these are 4x faster than the previous volume texture shading mode--and they look better!

Plus I'm using an expensive texture, just for fun...

Wolfie: So what's the catch?

3d~?~elf: daktari, what machine?

Sky Pilot: I'm sold!

Meta AuntiAlias: (I love this crowd! :D "If I can't have this right now, then I want to know render time, and machine speed and all that.. so I can wait.. with a little more knowledgeable anticipation ohplease ohplease")

Dr. Mojo: Time, is all.

And, they're a pain to get right.

This is why Intel loves us here!

DaleP: how long til update?

3d~?~elf: perty pleeeze

Dr. Mojo: Use up them cycles!

Sky Pilot: Gotta have something to gripe about!

Meta AuntiAlias: Those of you who were here last week heard that the date for the update is

camel: Come on machine??

Dr. Mojo: Ask Brian & Ales. "Soon." Like, in a matter of weeks.

Meta AuntiAlias: technically "Real Soon Now"

Wolfie: Hey, those cycles are wasting away if you aren't rendering!

stiffkat: LOL aunti, I've found that more RAM and space has helped out renders quite a bit for me. There are things that we can do for speed user end....

Yojimbo: lol

Dr. Mojo: I've always siad that I can bring any computer to its knees.

Meta AuntiAlias: and that's as specific as you're gonna hear it. Real Soon Now : )

Reflash: well, by the time this scene is rendered, the update will be ready

Wolfie: Ohhh..."Real Soon now" was only about 6months away from the release date of 3.1 update!

Sky Pilot: lol

Dr. Mojo: Perhaps not something to brag about... :-)

stiffkat: pfffft, MO, you can try but I'll always fight back :)

Meta AuntiAlias: Okay.... there was a question for you Ken.. just for info. what's da machine you did that work on?

Dr. Mojo: Look at it this way: The longer it takes, the more spiffy presets you'll get!

stiffkat: amen to that

Dr. Mojo: It's a PC. 450 MHz I think.

Wolfie: How about categories FOR those new presets? Hint..Hint..

Meta AuntiAlias: Wolfie, with all due respect...

GIVE IT UP!

camel: MM

Meta AuntiAlias: for now

Dr. Mojo: They'll be cloud presets in the texture libs.

Sky Pilot: Can't let it go!

JeffP: Take all the time you need...

stiffkat: LOLOL, where's that wolf muzzle........

Wolfie: kewl

so they are standard cloud tex?

3d~?~elf: need some doggie downers

Dr. Mojo: You guys are gonna hate me when I get ALL my slow & spiffy stuff into Bryce!

stiffkat: LOL elf, no doubt

Dr. Mojo: No, they are new textures.

Sky Pilot: What fun is a fast render?

Clay: LOL!!!

3d~?~elf: tortureer!!!

Dr. Mojo: In fact, that scene uses all (and lonly) new stuff in B4: terrains, textures, volumes.

stiffkat: never Mo, we'll never hate ya

Rosy: :=)

Meta AuntiAlias: Sky Pilot, I like yer attitude!

Dr. Mojo: "We'll see abou that," Stiffkat!

Ringo: Long live Mojo!

Sky Pilot: Pay the price: )

Dr. Mojo: Realism always has it's price. And it gets higher all the time.

camel: Mojo!! You are da man!!!

Clay: ?

Wolfie: Multiple render machines will take care of all the new features I think!

Meta AuntiAlias: Clay, go ahead with your question!

JeffP: Any animations of the NEW stuff?

Clay: I know I asked this before, but will we see lens flares in the future?

Meta AuntiAlias: yes...

make a sphere, squash it

Dr. Mojo: It's on the list. Dunno the priority, offhand.

Meta AuntiAlias: change its index of refraction so it looks like a lens

then make it flare

DaleP: Clay mentioned earlier a sky technique for water....

Meta AuntiAlias: presto!

lens flare!

Yojimbo: cool!

Meta AuntiAlias: yes... Clay

how 'bout that sky technique now?

stiffkat: also, put 4 flat walls together, apply mirror, it will flare where all four meet

Meta AuntiAlias: after showing us the "in near future" and having us all drool...

it's a good idea to come back to what we can do now! :D

Clay: oh, it was actually using a clooud plane to make water look a little more real

Meta AuntiAlias: do tell!

Clay: k lemme bring the page back up to show....

Sky Pilot: I've used cloud mats for ship wakes, Clay

Clay: http://www.phase2.net/claygraphics/terraformer.html

Wolfie: cloud ? after clay

stiffkat: yeah aunti, someone sent me a preset of it, problem is it takes up lots of room and when you drop size the effect is muted

Clay: using Cloud planes just under the surface of Water slabs

stiffkat: I'll have to play with the sphere now :)

Ringo: I see great Clay.

Clay: you can get some neat effects

Rosy: very nice

Cricket: Nice image, Clay!! I've used that technique with cloud plane on water myself.

Sky Pilot: Sounds interesting

Looks very nice!

Clay: I use it in all my water scenes

thanks

Meta AuntiAlias: so you just place it just above the top of the water?

Yojimbo: under

Wolfie: under

Clay: tweaking the clouds can get very convincing results for diff environments

no just under Susan

Sky Pilot: What people won't think of!

DaleP: How about ship wakes Sky Pilot?

Sky Pilot: I love it.

Clay: AND

Sky Pilot: OK

Clay: I always use the Carribean water preset

set to grey insted of Auqua

Sky Pilot: http://members.aol.com/beyondvr/burke.html

Clay: done

stiffkat: Dale, for wakes, try drawing a greyscale of a flat wake, take it to the sym lattice

squish it in the A bounding box, replicate it and set them crossing each other slightly

Rosy: Sky...cool wake!

Sky Pilot: There are a lot of tori there

stiffkat: you can get pretty close to 3D that way

Sky Pilot: cylinders

Dr. Mojo: <As a footnote, I put the wake on the Titanic in the movie. Don't think there's that much need for it in Bryce.>

Sky Pilot: inside each other

Clay: neat image

DaleP: Thanx stiffkat

Sky Pilot: with different mats applied

Frodo10: I have a question for people, how much does Poser cost?

painter: ?

Wolfie: here is a wake I did on the titanic: http://www.wolfiesden.com/bryce/gallery/general020.html

Sky Pilot: Mapping varies

stiffkat: working on a tut Dale, should have it up in a couple of weeks, working on several at the same time

Frodo10: Okay thanks, I was wondering

Sky Pilot: Wake at rear is terrain

Dr. Mojo: Cool, Wolfie--looks a lot like the one I did!

Meta AuntiAlias: in re: to Poser question: www.metacreations.com/products/poser4

Frodo10: Thank you

Dr. Mojo: That's what I did: Add a terrain to the water height field that Arete made.

I got all into trochoids and phase, but then, it WAS Titanic...

Wolfie: I also made a negative terrain to carve out the water plane for the troughs of the waves

stiffkat: ooooh wolfie, that's smart!

Sky Pilot: That's a great technique for water

Dr. Mojo: Ship wakes are really hard. No one really does them correctly, not even in Titanic. (Look real close next time you see it, it actually sucks pretty bad!)

Meta AuntiAlias: painter, you had a question? go ahead....

stiffkat: Mo, the 13 year olds were *not* watching the ship wakes.....LOL

Clay: !

Sky Pilot: lol

stiffkat: "Oh Leo....."

Yojimbo: hehew
