BryceTalk Skies, July 22, 1999
Part 2

Meta AuntiAlias: here's the idea:After you finish telling us about your lighting trick....how about we take a moment and let everyone say the one thing that confuses you most about skies/the one thing you'd really like to know about...

Sky Pilot: I wrote the guy who did that, haven't heard back

Nice plane

Meta AuntiAlias: and we can make sure the rest of the discussion covers those things....

Sky Pilot: Good plan

Meta AuntiAlias: so...

Wolfie: ?

Meta AuntiAlias: this is a free-for-all moment

Rosy: The moon in Bryce looks sorta weak. Is there any way to make it look more radiant? I like big full moons!

Meta AuntiAlias: type the ONE thing that's most confusing OR the ONE thing you'd like to know about

_Kat: This question is so silly I

Oops!

Muzical: (same question as Rosy)

Rosy: :-)

Meta AuntiAlias: keep 'em coming. I KNOW there are others! :D

CBXTX: *

Sky Pilot: That's a big problem. Too many things color it

stiffkat: confused on blending sky dome/sun/ambient colors to achieve natural effects, sunset skies, pink-edged clouds, etc.

3d~?~elf: sun controls...light intensity

Wolfie: How do you turn OFF the moon? Like for space scenes where you have the sun coming from over the camera sholder. The moon will appear in the background with no ground plane

_Kat: I'm almost embarrassed to ask it....but! When I know I have the orb positioned correctly, wWhy do I have so much trouble getting the moom to appear in a night scene?

Meta AuntiAlias: good, good... let's have more! : )

Sky Pilot: Not sure

Dr. Mojo: Okay guys & gals, I've gotten enough stuff over to my site to crash it hen y'all try to access it, methinks... Want me to talk about color perspective some?

Heather: ?

Steve Lareau: Why do I always go Wheeee!!!???

Meta AuntiAlias: hang on a mo, Mojo!

lars: I really struggle with adjusting the heigth of all the sky elements. It's very time consuming for me to move a camera, even with the link to camera turned on, and go adjust all the heights.

Sky Pilot: Don't think phase would help much

Clay: heheh

Dr. Mojo: Just give me my cue...

Sky Pilot: Haven't tried it

Wolfie: no it doesn't..it just blocks the stars

Sky Pilot: true

Wolfie: like a black hole hanging there

painter: Why does rendering speed up when I keep the mouse moving and slow down when the mouse is stationary

orbit: Is there anyway to shorten render times but still use the volumetric world settings, even at minimal times the rendrs go thru the roof

Heather: How do you make rain fall at the right slant for rain?

lars: Is there some quick trick that will let me figure out when the top of the fog hit's the bottom of the clouds and if I move the camera how much I will have to adjust it.

Sky Pilot: Sun & moon being tied together is unnatural

orbit: I meant minimal settings

Sky Pilot: You cannot have both in sky at same time

Wolfie: Maybe an option for B5: Unlink Sun/Moon?

Sky Pilot: be nice

stiffkat: can I add cloud presets to the actual DTE and should I keep them greyscale?

Sky Pilot: Volumetric is costly

Muzical: How about an eclipse?

lars: how about drawing the mone as a circle on the back of the scene and having bryce take care of the positining ....

Calyxa: I wish there was a way to control the size of sun glow area versus the area dominated by the sun color

Wolfie: So, for now, you cant hide the moon...oh welll, I had hoped

orbit: very costly

lars: moon. (mone?)

Ringo: hello

Sky Pilot: You can lessen quality, but kinda defeats the purpose

Yojimbo: ?

Sky Pilot: Could you position it to side? Wolfie

Wolfie: Then that would change the SUN angle and thus the shadows I want to create

Sky Pilot: Disable sun and use other lights

orbit: I try to make quality high but just use a low setting on density

Meta AuntiAlias: okay.. these questions range from : how does it work sun controls/light intensity; cloud altitude.... things that involve the basic gist of the sun model.. then there are feature requests (make it different in such-n-such a way) and then there are some tec

Sky Pilot: Lessens the effect, no?

orbit: too high seems to wash things out unnaturally

Meta AuntiAlias: techniques such as rain slant....and render times....

Wolfie: Never thought of that...was creating an eclips view from out by the moon so you could see the shadow on the earth surface

Sky Pilot: too true

Steve Lareau: Sun / moon- what about an addition of a slider for positioning- a rolling wheel as in Poser's twist / turn? That would make posiiong a lot easier than the "click on the sphere and drag"....

Sky Pilot: I don't use VOL much

Calyxa: would like to control frequency/amplitude separately for cumulus/stratus clouds

Yojimbo: Well I may have a bug then

lars: Agreed Calyxa

Wolfie: Also perhaps a way to load our own moon image. Not everything we render is here on EARTH!

Yojimbo: as far as the sun goes

Meta AuntiAlias: ....and volumetrics and the like....

Sky Pilot: That would take a lot of wheels

Dr. Mojo: Sky Pilot, I'm gonna change that with the update... >;^)

Yojimbo: turning on disable sun does not actually disable the sun

Sky Pilot: Positioning

Yojimbo: it still displays

Calyxa: or have more than one moon, Wolfie, for the same reason

Meta AuntiAlias: you can also color the sun black to "disable" it

Sky Pilot: Need to set to black

Meta AuntiAlias: tho if it is visible in your sky, well, it's black!

Yojimbo: Yes, but why?

Steve Lareau: ? Is this a "Let's toss out ideas" session?

Wolfie: yes

Sky Pilot: It's a brawl

Meta AuntiAlias: it has been, Steve... I'm trying to sum things up and come up with a general game plan : )

Muzical: at the moment :)

Steve Lareau: hehe!

Meta AuntiAlias: not a toss out ideas session but...

Wolfie: waiting on a ftp session at the moment...WHEEE!

Calyxa: if you make the sun disk size really small, it's a bright dot floating in a less bright large dot before it starts fading into sun glow color... what's up with that?

orbit: hey you could do some cool stuff with a black sun

Meta AuntiAlias: toss out the ONE confusing thing about sky or ONE thing you'd like to know

Sky Pilot: Ken??

Meta AuntiAlias: and... as i was saying a little while ago. we seem to be getting to a few different categories...

Wolfie: A cry for help!

Meta AuntiAlias: I can tell you that at the moment, Ken is away from his keyboard...

Yojimbo: And what is this reference to Rain Slant BTW?

Rosy: one confusing thing...pale weak moons!

Meta AuntiAlias: adn... with the number of people in the room, we got a lot of stuff going on...

Yojimbo: I've heard of some copies of B4 having a rain and snow addition to the Sky Lab

Meta AuntiAlias: if you stated it already, please don't do so again.

Sky Pilot: Haven't tried to make the sun a dot

Meta AuntiAlias: I got yours already, Rosy

Yojimbo: But not in other copies

Steve Lareau: I was going to say- this i slike the running of the bulls!

Rosy: oK aunti

Meta AuntiAlias: I was saying, for the benefit of those who arrived mid-staement-fest

what is going on, and why this is confusing

Yojimbo: lol Steve

orbit: volumes?

Meta AuntiAlias: I guess I'm also remiding myself why it's confusing!

so...

Dr. Mojo: I can't help ya with that... Sorry!

Steve Lareau: LOL!

Meta AuntiAlias: <sssh! for a moment>

we got some categories:

--1 basic what's it all about stuff

--2 things I don't like or wish were different (those are the feature requests, etc.)

--3 techniques to do x (x includes rain slant and other tricky things)

--4 volumes and making render time quicker

--5 other stuff that I can't summarize right off the top of my head

so...

I also know that Ken's got some great stuff to tell us about a new feature in the sky

the Color Perspective

Wolfie: ;;;huh?

Meta AuntiAlias: it occurs to me tho, that after all that stuff re: ambient color and potential confusion

Yojimbo: hehe

Meta AuntiAlias: re: this or that color

Clay: heheh

Dr. Mojo: This'll confuse all, more!

Meta AuntiAlias: for ken to tell us all about it, if we don't have a basic understanding of what's what, may make things more confusing

right....

GMTA, Ken!

lars: I'd like to throw positioning cloud altitude vs. fog altitude ont hat list Auntie

Meta AuntiAlias: so, we can confuse more and sorta work our way back (dicey, but interesting)

or we can clear up a few confusions now before moving into that interesting and dicey area

Dr. Mojo: Cloud altitude isn't well defined right now. No matter how high you go, they remain above you.

lars: Yo, eleven. <- dicey but interesting.

Meta AuntiAlias: ::::draws Sky Pilot and Dr. Mojo into a huddle::::

lars: Well that explains that!

Meta AuntiAlias: (okay, yout ake the ball and go out on the end, then you give it to me with a forward pass)

no!

wrong huddle!!

Dr. Mojo: Confusion is my middle name... >;^)

3d~?~elf: better stick to dancin, susan!

Wolfie: Dr. Mojo Confusion?

Reflash: use cloud height numbers such as in Vista Pro

Dr. Mojo: Mo Confusion, for short.

Reflash: for next rev

Yojimbo: lol

Wolfie: ahh!

camel: Why not start from the start?

Wolfie: gasp!

Meta AuntiAlias: So, gents, how about we make sure that we cover the atmosphere and just re-cap the ambient/sun stuff and haze? then move on into atmosphere?

Muzical: oh no....stop making sense!

lars: No I mean that it makes more sense. I always thought you could end up flying through a cloud using the cloud control somehow and I was missing that somehow. Now I know it isnt there.

Meta AuntiAlias: what say, Sky Pilot n Mojo?

Sky Pilot: OK

Dr. Mojo: Sounds good. SP is the expert on the current skies. I'm a theory-dweeb.

Sky Pilot: lars you need a cloud layer

Wolfie: <===Tosses ball in the air...who will catch it? Mo or SP?

lars: That's what I ended up with. I just thought I was making it harder.

Sky Pilot: fumble

Dr. Mojo: Clouds will be massively improved in both the near and far future. THat I can say.

Meta AuntiAlias: so... Sky Pilot, how about going back to the sky/ambient/skydome stuff... and all.... keep clouds and the extra things out of it for a moment... and we'll entertain questions about ambient/sky dome/sun color etc.?

Yojimbo: YAY!

Clay: cool

Wolfie: Hint, hint, nudge, nudge!

lars: dig it.

Sky Pilot: Go

Meta AuntiAlias: uh... : )

*you* go! : )

camel: Gosh it worked!!:)

Sky Pilot: Any questions?

Reflash: ?

Sky Pilot: Do it
