BryceTalk Animation, A Case Study, July 20, 1999
Part 2

Meta AuntiAlias: For those of you who've joined us recently... Steve Lareau is telling us about an animation project of his... we're now in Q & A... if you have a question, please type "?"

Steve Lareau: Let me address that- if at all possible, render to individual frames.

Not AVI or MOV, but frames.

Steve Lareau: That way you can stop and resume later- when you need to stop it, stop it, then SAVE THE SCENE! That way when you start up again, Bryce rememberes which frame you left off on!

That save a LOT of headaches later on.

CrypticGrafix: cool

Steve Lareau: Then you can compile it later, and add whatever compression.

Steve4001: ?

dcamp: Thunderstorm arriving. Have to sign off.

Steve Lareau: If you DO render to AVI or MOV, o with AVI, save to FULL FRAMES UNCOMPRESSED, in MOV format save as ANIMATION, which is also uncompressed.

Steve Lareau: That way you can mess with them later and compress them at the final time.

ovid: ? HOW CAN WE SEE STEVE'S MOVIE

Steve Lareau: Compressing animations is like a JPEG- every time you open and save it, it loses quailty.

Meta AuntiAlias: People waiting in line to ask their questions (aka queue): tanuki, cyber_mike, Morbius, Sundogdeb, CrypticGraphix, Steve4001

Gigabyte: http://www.hilltopdesign.com/musicvideo/

Steve Lareau: I wish I know that before I started this project!

Meta AuntiAlias: The list of "I wish I knews" tend to be the most important things to know....

Steve Lareau: The scene in the video with the city under the blue dome- you can tell that it was compressed when I first made it- it looks nasty!

And that's why I'm passing this along here- it will make life MUCH easier!

Ok... next?

Meta AuntiAlias: tanuki!! you are on! :D

tanuki: I'm working now on a 20 minute animation, 720x240 at 30fps, my biggest problem is the long render time, I read that you got other people to help on your web page, how did you get/find other people to help with the rendering on their computers?

Steve Lareau: <tap tap tap> "Is this thing on?" =D

Gigabyte: 7%...wheeee!

Meta AuntiAlias: (welcome, M'Kell! glad you found it!)

M'Kell: LOL

Me too. :)

Meta AuntiAlias: we're doing Q & A now.... Steve's madly typing in response to tanuki's question.... sit back n relax; if you gotta question, please type "?"

M'Kell: *silent now*

Steve Lareau: Tanuki- you may want to try a smaller size. What I dis was put a post up looking for help the list, and some foklks chiped in with the render chores. It was pretty cool of them to help out like that.

Hey Mike!

tanuki: I see, I've asked here but got no response.

M'Kell: *grin*

Meta AuntiAlias: new kpt list and new bryce lists are up on www.onelist.com... what a great way to get the ball rolling!

tanuki: Can't go smaller, it's for video.

Meta AuntiAlias: er.. bryce list (singlular)

Steve Lareau: I doubt that many of them would do it again considering I asked them to re render some quite a few times, and transferring 15- 30 meg files all the time got to be a little tiring! =D

tanuki: I see, thanks

Steve Lareau: Tanukie- sorry to say, it comes with the territory.

Meta AuntiAlias: Can I step in here with an answer to that?

Having worked on Planetary Traveler n all.... : )

Steve Lareau: But- one thing that KILLS i lights- cut them down if you can!

Steve Lareau: Sure- knock yourself out!

name dropper! <wink>

tanuki: I just keep buying more computers

Steve Lareau: There ya go!

Meta AuntiAlias: this is where you just beat the bushes... I had a friend who had a computer at home; she worked at the office; so hers rendered a scene from PT during the day

Steve Lareau: <got a spare?>

tanuki: my renderfarm is growing

Meta AuntiAlias: and during her business trips, too...

the thing that made this easier is that since we live in the same town, I did most of the file transfer stuff

Steve Lareau: Yeah, ask around- there's a lot of networks in offices just sitting there over the weekends- bribe the cleaning lady!

Meta AuntiAlias: that's prolly what's a pain to the folks on the list that Steve worked with

you reach a threshhold of "oh, it's too much work, no, thanks, not for the next one"

Steve Lareau: Yeah, it was... that was a lot of FTPing over night...

Meta AuntiAlias: anything you can do to make that threshhold lower will probably help

M'Kell: ?

Meta AuntiAlias: a 5-minute drive and zip disks is easier than overnight FTPS

done for my part : )

Steve Lareau: True... but not everyone had a zip drive...

I'm amazed we pulled this off looking back on it...

anyway... where were we?

Meta AuntiAlias: well, PT used Zip as file transfer medium of choice.. each situation is different, true but that was ours.

cyber_mike.. you're ON!

Croaker: Find friends with cable modems...8)

Meta AuntiAlias: People waiting in line to ask their questions (aka queue): Morbius, Sundogdeb, CrypticGraphix, Steve4001, M'Kell

Morbius: Gotta get back to work! Have fun, all - and RENDER ON!!

Steve Lareau: CD burners sure make life sweet, I'll say that much!

Croaker: I DL'ed ur movie in a couple minutes

Steve Lareau: Next?

Meta AuntiAlias: oops. cyber_mike has left..

Steve Lareau: hehe!

Meta AuntiAlias: Morbius, you're Next!!

Steve Lareau: He just had to go back to work....

Morbius: I know, but gotta go!

Purusha: ?

Steve Lareau: Haha!!!!!!!!

Croaker: add me into the line, if u will

Meta AuntiAlias: SunDogDeb...

Steve Lareau: they're dropping like flies!

Meta AuntiAlias: it's you!

CrypticGrafix: hehehe

Meta AuntiAlias: People waiting in line to ask their questions (aka queue): CrypticGraphix, Steve4001, M'Kell, Purusha, Croaker ... if you have a question, please type "?"

Steve Lareau: time to stretch and do some aerobic chair spins- wheeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CrypticGrafix: hahaha

Meta AuntiAlias: :D

Steve Lareau: Ahh, much better!

SunDogDeb has left the building.

Meta AuntiAlias: SunDogDeb? youu here?

Steve Lareau: LOL!

Meta AuntiAlias: not anymore...

CrypticGrafix: geez

Steve Lareau: Hahaaha!!!

Meta AuntiAlias: Cryptic, you're on!

Gigabyte: lol

Steve Lareau: Is it my breath?

CrypticGrafix: did you add music in bryce? or did you use another program?

Steve Lareau: The music was added inside of Adobe Premiere.

CrypticGrafix: oh okay...i need to get that then :)

Steve Lareau: It took some doing to get some of the video to synch with the music, but I finally got it pretty close.

Gigabyte: there goes another one

Steve Lareau: Wheee!!!!!!!!

CrypticGrafix: id ask better ?'s but i havent seen the movie yet ;)

Meta AuntiAlias: Steve4001, you're ON! :D

Steve4001: when you render to individual frames, can bryce compile thoose frames later to animation? or do you use some other software? premiere?

CrypticGrafix: hehehe

Steve Lareau: I think there's some freeware or shareware programs that will allow you to ad audio, but you can't edit it much....

CrypticGrafix: hmmm

Steve Lareau: You can compile the frames in Premiere, sure, although there are programs that will do it as well.

Steve4001: ive used gifbuilder

Steve Lareau: Oh- STAY AWAY from a program for the PC called BMP2AVI- it screws up the color palette!

Steve4001: but B4 won do it?

wont

Steve Lareau: No- it can only create whatever format, won;t compile them.

Meta AuntiAlias: QuickTime Pro is nice for compiling frames into an animation, too!

Steve Lareau: Maybe Bryce 8?

Steve4001: thank you

Steve Lareau: Yeah, I've got to get that myself one of these days.....

Meta AuntiAlias: welcome back, SunDog Deb; I'll put you back at the beginning of the queue so we can take your question.. hang on a bit.

SunDogDeb: ? (sorry, I crashed)

Steve Lareau: hat also has Sorenson codec too, right?

Meta AuntiAlias: for QT3 and QT4, yes...

Steve Lareau: Deb- I do that all the time too!

Steve4001: moviestar also works

Steve Lareau: That's why I have a crash helmet on when I'm sitting here!

Meta AuntiAlias: There's also Media Player Pro that does other compression tasks... and you can also get a higher-end Sorenson compression codec

but, at its most basic, QT does allow you to do sorenson

in fact...

Steve Lareau: Codecs- that's another big can of worms... anyone want to go fishing? =D

Croaker: Use MPEG

Meta AuntiAlias: I may upload a B4 animation test with Sorenson codec for you all to see

www.codeccentral.com

Steve Lareau: Cool.....

Meta AuntiAlias: for info on codecs

Steve Lareau: You're fast with those links!

Meta AuntiAlias: (I learned some about them when I was writing a book on QuickTIme VR)

Steve Lareau: I was just going to look for that myself!

You scare me sometimes......

Meta AuntiAlias: er... are we done with this, ready for the next question?

Steve Lareau: next!

Meta AuntiAlias: SunDogDeb.. go for it! :D

SunDogDeb: What did you compile your frames and music with? What was your animation used for?

Steve Lareau: It was all compiled in Adobe Premiere- the audio too.

SunDogDeb: Thanks -- I'll look into a crash helmet

Steve Lareau: The animations was for the fun of doing it, the video will also be seen on CD's handed out by Metacreations at upcoming trade shows, training seminars, etc, so if you're somewhere and you see that Metacreations is showing off their latest products, wande

SunDogDeb: :)

Steve Lareau: Get a sturdy helmet-it's better, trust me.

SunDogDeb: LOL

Steve Lareau: Oop-s wander over and see if they have a demo CD.

SunDogDeb: Thanks

Steve Lareau: sure...

render safely!

Meta AuntiAlias: done?

Steve Lareau: Wow- jutst had a REAL close lightning hit- my phones rang!

Done
