BryceTalk Q & A with Engineers, July 15, 1999

AuntiAlias: MetaBrian is here...

aeryn: Brian!! Welcome!

Ringo: That's funny!

Dr. Mojo: hey!

renato!: cool

slack~!~~

Ringo: HI, Brian.

MetaBrian: Hi all

gdmsynth: Hi there

Calyxa: lol, Don, I finally caught your 'can't make it drink' comment

aeryn: (very funny photos, Ken!)

DonaldSGriffin: Caly, I was kinda proud of it. :)

Clay: ALES!

Dr. Mojo: That's me in the neon...

aeryn: ales!!!

Clay: FERNANDO!

Ringo: Oh, the BryceMaster are here...Wow!

Buddy: Hi Caly

Clay: nice picts Mojo

Calyxa: hey, Ales, Fern

metafernc: hello

aeryn: It's so you, Ken!

AuntiAlias: I guess we're all here....!

let's get started!

AuntiAlias: It's Q & A night with da Bryce Developers!

Journeyman: So I see

AuntiAlias: Ales Holecek (ahole).. Brian Wagner (metaBrian) and Ken Musgrave (Dr. Mojo)

Tonight's discussion is being logged.. It's also being moderated.

Here's how it works. If you have a question, please type

?

I'll add you to the queue and call on you in turn. It helps to keep chaos down to a dull roar!

Journeyman: did i miss all the good stuff?

AuntiAlias: so go for it!!

daRAT: ya scared him :P

AuntiAlias: Just starting, and for some reason, Ales had to leave or sumthin

Ringo: ?

Calyxa: ?

MetaBrian: His chat thingy broke

He'll be back

Clay: LOL!!

thinggy?

Calyxa: technical term

Clay: engineering term

renderin': is that tech speak?

JayG: ?

AuntiAlias: Well, while we're waiting for him to come back... just so's you know (and I am catching the ?-queue) Ken (Dr. Mojo) is responsible for noises and textures... so if you have New terrain algorithm questions, ask those, too!

Okay.. here's the Queue: Ringo, Caly, JayG

george: ?

Dr. Mojo: Also the color perspective...

AuntiAlias: ..and George : )

george: : )

AuntiAlias: yes, indeedie, color perspective, too...

Clay: heheh

DonaldSGriffin: (I'm hopelessly lost already)

MetaBrian: His thingy is fixed

Journeyman: <is trying to think of something intelligent to ask>

AuntiAlias: but we'll take Ringo's question first... (if you're in the queue, do type it out ahead of time so you can just type Enter when I call on you)

Ringo: You are on!

Ringo: What's in the works for the Bryce update? Poser4 import module...anytime soon...I hope..please.

MetaBrian: No, the Poser import won

oops

't be part of the update

Dr. Mojo: New & improved volume textures, for one.

MetaBrian: There are about 100 issues, however

Mostly bus fixes...

ugh, bug

Ringo: any samples?

MetaBrian: There are some exhancements as Ken mentioned

DonaldSGriffin: ?

Buddy: I thought you weren't allowed to say anything about the update.

Ringo: Thanks done.

MetaBrian: There were many bugs with the light editor and the starfields and comets

AuntiAlias: Next: Caly!

Calyxa: I'm quite distressed to hear that user configurable categories for presets is being put off 'til Bryce 5. what's up with that?!

Dr. Mojo: I' m probably saying things I shouldn't say!

AuntiAlias: If you have a question, please type "?"

MetaBrian: We feel we didn't have the time to do it it the way we wanted to, so we held off

Buddy: Thanks Caly!

JeffP: ?

AuntiAlias: JayG, you're on

MetaBrian: This update is more for bug fixes and very minor enhancements more than it is about adding full features

JayG: I've run into compliants, about the 'net, that version 4 renders slower than the previous versions. I uninstalled 2 for 4 so can't say, but I'm curious for an answer from the makers.

george: <take me off the queue....I have to answer a phone call>

CrypticGrafix: ?

AuntiAlias: queue: DonaldSG, JeffP

Calyxa: ?

Buddy: A feature stated in the manual.

MetaBrian: There is little, if any, difference between 3 and 4...however

Ringo: ?

MetaBrian: You will find differences between 2 and 4

Are you Mac or PC?

JayG: PC/Win 98

george: ?

MetaBrian: It will be much faster for you, then...

DonaldSGriffin: Does it make any sense that Bryce can't import Raydream files?

MetaBrian: Win Bryce2 -> Win Bryce4 = better rendering speed

AuntiAlias: queue: DonaldSG, JeffP, Calyxa, Ringo, george ... if you have a question, please type "?"

JayG: I really love the program. Thank you SO much for the EXCELLENT work. I program in VB, so have a lillte sympathy.

ahole: Yes, it acctualy does make sense

MetaBrian: thank you

JayG: Thank you. Done

Dr. Mojo: Thainks indeed!

AuntiAlias: Okay, DOnald is next and his question is a few lines above...

ahole: RDS files take advantage of lots of plugins and proceduralism in the area of geometry which Bryce right now can not support

AuntiAlias: oh, and ales is answering <okay, I get it!>

DonaldSGriffin: couldn't those be ignored?

ahole: Well, the you would probably get very little left in the scene. RDS has evenb primitives done as plugins ....

DonaldSGriffin: OK

FSUGary: hello all!

FSUGary: techie night?

CrypticGrafix: . o O ( ? )

AuntiAlias: comment form the peanut gallery: er.. they are being ignored.. that's why you can't import!

ahole: It's rather complex. You can export geometry from RDS in any other "standart" format. Including textures

ahole: And Bryce will eat them like bread adn butter

done ...

MetaBrian: Susan, I'd like to speak to the issue of preset categories sometime before this night is over...

AuntiAlias: For those who've recently arrived.. tonight is Q & A with Bryce developers.. it's moderated,, logged and there's a question queue... get into the queu by typing

?

JeffP-- you are on

FSUGary: ?

JeffP: Will we see deformers like those in Poser 4 in Bryce...maybe 5?

ahole: Maybe....

AuntiAlias: k, Brian... I'll just add you to the queue! :D

ahole: Can't say yes, can't say no

JayG: Bummer, dinners ready. Thanks all!

ahole: done ..

AuntiAlias: Calyxa!!

Calyxa: can you explain 'align to path'? if I take a pyramid and want

it to travel point first down a path, as soon as I select 'align

to path', the pyramid rotates so that the point is facing up, which

is not what I want...

ahole: OK. This is easy, but at the same time confusing...

DonaldSGriffin: Caly "Set As Unity" works for that.

george: Should our questions be geared towards things like "

ahc!

sorry....hit return when I didn't mean to

ahole: When you allign to path, the object is always

alighning with its positive Z axis.

FSUGary: ?

ahole: However, in the object attribute dialog you can redefine unitiy of the object.

Calyxa: OK, that make sense, thanks - a related question -- I at one time tried using paths as

a modelling tool. link a bunch of objects to a path, then

when the path is moved, the objects woulld move with it.

that's no longer true in B4, what happened there?

ahole: If you want a pyramid alighned to path with the top, you have to first

.....

Shel i continue with the explanation? Or is it clear..?

Calyxa: it's clear, thanks

but I'm curious about why objects don't move with paths anymore.

AuntiAlias: actually, do continue with explanation... for those of us who might want to try it but haven't gotten as far as Caly : )

ahole: Hmmm, I think it is Caly

I have just tried it works like champ..

Calyxa: with multiple objects?

Buddy: ?

ahole: Yes...

AuntiAlias: queue: Ringo, george, CrypticGrafix, Brian, FSU Gary, Buddy ... if you have a question, please type "?"

ahole: I'm doing it right now....

FSUGary: great :-)

Calyxa: very strange, I couldn't get it to work when I tried it the other day...

the path would move, the objects would stay put.

DonaldSGriffin: I found the alignment doesn't snap into place until you hit the play button.

Calyxa: there is no animation in this case

ahole: If you ran into the problem make sure that the flag in the Object attribute dialog which spells constrain to path is checked

Calyxa: yes, I checked that.

ahole: There is no need for animation

ahole: If you have a scene which has this problem please send it to me. I would be glad to look at it....

Calyxa: in fact, I used the 'constrain to path' numeric entry to position the objects along the path evenly...

ahole: And what happen?

Calyxa: the objects would move along the path to their position, but then when I'd select the path and _edit_ it (change the curvature), the objects would stay put.

ahole: hold down

DonaldSGriffin: You could make a rollercoaster track that way.

Calyxa: if I move the path as one unit, the objects move too

MetaBrian: I think he means "hold on"

Calyxa: it was either that or a modifier key he's looking for...

ahole: OK, OK

gdmsynth: ?

ahole: I found it Caly. You scored some brownie points

Calyxa: yay!

Yojimbo: hehe

Clay: heheh

AuntiAlias: :D

ahole: All the problem is that the preview is not updating. If you click on the objet which did not move with the

CBXTX: 8^)

ahole: path and nudge it a little everything will snap into the right positions.

Calyxa: ah!

ahole: But yes there is a bug and we'll make sure that it's right in the update

Thanks

Calyxa: thank you!

AuntiAlias: :D Ringo.. you're on!

Ringo: To Kent: you have an incredible vision for the Internet...I see Bryce and metastream becoming more evolved into an interactive environment for the net.. Do you see that in the future as well for bryce? Real worlds on the net that is.

AuntiAlias: Hey! dr. Mojo.. you there?

AuntiAlias: : )

Ringo: hehe

ahole: I think he fell asleep :)

AuntiAlias: hmmmm... I want to make a comment about how we've lost our (Dr.) Mojo....

Dr. Mojo: I'm here!

Ringo: wonderful...I got to ask him a question and he is gone.

ahole: Caly, we have just checked the same problem in 3 and it does not work either .....

Guycreamo: ? object not found question

AuntiAlias: I'll add you to the list, Guy... Ken, question is above...

ahole: Well Dr. Mojo then you should maybe answer the question above :)

Calyxa: maybe 3.0 it was OK and not in 3.1? I _know_ I got it to work before...

Dr. Mojo: Okay, here's my thought on that: I want Bryce to become the tool that we ue to create the *environmnet* that is immersive cyberspace.

Dr. Mojo: I believe that that environment should look familiar--like the world we evolved in.

MetaBrian: Are you sure we evolved?

Dr. Mojo: That would take advantage of our monkey-heritage: We evolved to deal with spaces like this.

gdmsynth: (Creation Theory?)

Dr. Mojo: Har har--NO!

Ringo: Excellent!

Clay: heheh

AuntiAlias: done?

Ringo: So we can see real worlds >DONE

AuntiAlias: george, you're on!

george: Should our questions be geared towards things like "When will bryce...." and "Will bryce ever..." or How does one do "X" like Caly's last question? I don't want to pester the engineeers with questions that they aren't allowed to answer.

Dr. Mojo: But seriously, the same reasons people find Bryce to be ab easy way to get into 3D CG should make it easy & natural as a *context* for *content.*

AuntiAlias: queue: CrypticGrafix, Brian, FSU Gary, gdmmsynth, GuyCreamo ... if you have a question, please type "?"

george: : )

FSUGary: awww yeah almost there!!!

MetaBrian: You're better off asking us technical questions

Ringo: agree.
