BryceTalk Novice Q & A, July 13, 1999
part 2

Journeyman: I don't kno wwhat you guys mean by Sree 3D

AuntiAlias: love it... any other answers? That last one was a beaut! :D

Journeyman: and Open GL

Wombat: woohoo! ta.

Journeyman: don't see it anywhere

Morbius: I've got 3 books on Bryce, and I'm going insane methinks.

AuntiAlias: 3? fun! :D

Wombat: Ok, another basic one, this is great stuff.

Tonebone: Follow the steps above Janak, it's there, honest..

AuntiAlias: wait a sec.. let's address the Sree 3D and the Open GL one for Journeyman

Journeyman: Are you talking about the Wireframe Resolution

menu

joan001: no right below that

Wombat: Text - I've tried so many different ways. Is there a simple add-on or cheap package that can do 3d exports in a format Bryce can handle, which can also bend the text?

AuntiAlias: you know the little cube that switches between wireframe view and rendered view and the wireframe-over-render view?

janak?

joan001: it looks like a cube

Tonebone: no, click and hold the little cube...

Journeyman: okay I got it now

AuntiAlias: usually you click it, but there's a cool menu hidden in there!

Journeyman: I know the cube, I thought you meant click and hold on wireframe res

done

AuntiAlias: and THAT is where you press mouse to get menu to get Sree 3D

k then... Wombat's question re: text...

any wanswer?

Journeyman: Yes

AuntiAlias: er.. answer

Wombat: (I use Bryce for Business presos rather than cool artsy stuff)

ThreeD: Anyone know how much memory should be assigned to the Byrce application to make it work pretty descent?

Shadow^One: steps in...

Journeyman: a program called Elefont does 3d text very well

AuntiAlias: oops! hold on!

Journeyman: no curved text I am afraid

AuntiAlias: let's take one question at a time...

Journeyman: tell them about the ? thing

AuntiAlias: we're a small enough crowd that we don't have to go to strict protocol.. but we're focusing on Wombat's question re: text

the protocol thing is this:

if you have a question, you type

?

and then when the floor is clear, we call on you and you can ask your question...

Morbius: Ah, etiquette. Thanks. Will do.

AuntiAlias: to keep the chaos down and help us all follow a single conversation. :D

ThreeD: Sorry, I'm clear on that now.

AuntiAlias: no prob.

so, Janak, were you gonna talk about text?

Journeyman: I said there is a cool program called Elefont (free) that lets you do 3D text

Tonebone: "£$%^&*( ISP...

Wombat: But bendy text?

Journeyman: It can do any font you have on your computer (TTF)

I don't know of any off hand that can do that

sorry

Shadow^One: use symetrical lattice to adjust greyscales...and you can bend it..or make it look bent

AuntiAlias: I've heard of Amamorphium to do that...

also, for tricky grayscale things and text, I've done the following:

set type in Photoshop, in pixels...

white on black...

but you can also put a gradient to make the text's surface bend a bit...

Shadow^One: grin

AuntiAlias: but that's not the same thing as stand-alone-in-the-air bending text.....

Wombat: I need to bend it in the other axis, Aunti.

AuntiAlias: which other axis?

Journeyman: if you wanted to make it so it actually bent you could duplicate the object, move it back and set it to negative and boolean the two

Wombat: Like in a logo, with the text circling around the daily planet.

Shadow^One: ohhh well make some text and map it around a sphere

AuntiAlias: like the Universal Pictures logo?

Tonebone: OOh blimey, you'll need a real 3D package to do that!

AuntiAlias: or a cylinder,

Wombat: Yeppers.

AuntiAlias: for flat text that bends around, the cylinder trick would do....

Beartrap: early versions of Coreldraw can be got pretty cheap...

Wombat: .. ok fair enough - anyone hear of amapi? does it do this?

Shadow^One: cool cylinder'

Tonebone: I use Amapi, and yes it does!!

Wombat: does it export in a format that bryce can use?

Tonebone: yup!, 3DS or DXF

AuntiAlias: probably

Morbius: 3DMax does it well.

Wombat: ok, thanks heaps.

?

Shadow^One: grin

Morbius: Yeah, me too....

AuntiAlias: and I haven't used it, but Meta does make a product called LogoMotion....

: )

Betty: I used Expression to do the type on a path, imported into photoshop, and then exported through a ps plugin called cybermesh

Journeyman: ?

Wombat: I had logomotion, it doesn't export in any useful format, ironically.

Betty: if the type is white on black

Wombat: I sent it back, shocked.

Betty: cybermesh will leave out the black and you're left with just the type

AuntiAlias: hmmm... didn't know about that, Wombat.

AuntiAlias: sorry to hear it...

is that enough to give you some directions, Wombat?

the creator: is there any way to get proper sun flares on my sun and lights

AuntiAlias: hi, the creator!

the creator: hi

Wombat: thanks betty, where do i get cybermesh and expressions?

AuntiAlias: we've got a small question queue in place right now. and there's one person ahead of you

Shadow^One: journey had ? next

Wombat: ok, yes thanks Aunti.

AuntiAlias: er.. two questions...

Betty: do a search for Knoll software.

the creator: knoll?

Betty: Knoll is one of the names creditied on Photoshop

AuntiAlias: ThreeD: Anyone know how much memory should be assigned to the Byrce application to make it work pretty descent?

the creator: and i can use that in BRYCE?

AuntiAlias: That was the next question...

Betty: I don't have the address I'm afraid. I got it from the KPT list

AuntiAlias: the answer is: As much as you can!

Morbius: As much as you can! I usually assign it 100meg because I can.

AuntiAlias: depends, of course, how much memory you have

and depends on the size of your scene file

If you have just a ground plane and 1 terrain, you can get by with the minimum allocation...

ThreeD: Thanks. I guess I'm just always running out.

Morbius: Believe you have to leave 30 meg free on a non-mac system, otherwise give it all you've got.

AuntiAlias: when I get into heavy duty scenes, I like to make sure that Bryce has 64 or so.. I've got a total of 160 on this Mac, but I usually have several apps open at once : )

Shadow^One: on a pc knock off everythig in background except sys tray and explorer then run bryce...a little better with speed

AuntiAlias: when I'm Bryceing for Bryce's sake, then I give it 70-80 or more

Morbius: within reason....even a Mac needs 10 meg for the OS.

AuntiAlias: right, of course! : )

ThreeD: I'll try that AuntiAlias - Thanks

Tonebone: I read somewhere that Win9x won't effectively use any more than 128meg, so dont blow your money away on more!

Like I did :(

Shadow^One: i heard that to tone thats why i stopped at 128 meg...but i cant prove it yet

AuntiAlias: okay.... Journeyman, you had a question?

Journeyman: Anyone know a way to make a multireplicate along a path? whenever I try it they all just get bunched into one end and I have to drag them out manually. Any ideas?

Wombat: ?The practical limit for '9x is around 256 meg

Shadow^One: hmm

AuntiAlias: that's the multireplicate easter egg, thing, Journeyman...

AuntiAlias: I've done soemthign with it about once or twice...

but not much... anyone else play with that?

Tonebone: Ooohh do tell Susan....

AuntiAlias: welcome Odie! we have a Q & A chat in progress...

if you have a question, type

?

Journeyman: ?

Odie: ?

Shadow^One: nope

AuntiAlias: then... when we're done with the current question(s) in the queue, I'll call on you..

the animation chat described the easter egg itself...

hang on a sec, I'll find which one that was...

Journeyman: we sure seem to get a lot of stumpers today diont we

AuntiAlias: and post the URL here..

Shadow^One: cool journey

makes you think

AuntiAlias: It was the April Chat with Rodney and Robert Bailey

and Robert Bailey spilled the Easter Egg beans in it...

I'll look it up and post it here. I know that the thing to do is tweak the offset setting....

Tonebone: OK, thanks

Morbius: My first time to a Bryce forum, and it's been GREAT!! Two major questions answered for me! Thanks SOOOO much to all involved! (but.....back to work, dagnabbit.) Thanks again! See you all next time.

Tonebone: Byee!!

Shadow^One: bye

Betty: bye

AuntiAlias: so that's the answer as best I can give it (site is slow right now)

how about we take the next question, and I'll post url when I find it?

Journeyman: sure

Tonebone: ?

Shadow^One: (jumps out to do more poser 4 experimentation...be cool all

Journeyman: bye

AuntiAlias: scrolling back to see what the queue is:

Betty: bye Shadow

AuntiAlias: Journeyman, Odie, Tonebone

Heather: bye Shadow

AuntiAlias: Journeyman, you had a question?

Journeyman: Is there a way to assign more hard drive memory to bryce 4?

I think there was in previous versions of bryce

but I haven't seen the same thing in this version

AuntiAlias: Anyone know the answer to that?

Wombat: why would you be limited, Journey?

Tonebone: I guess you are MAC based Janak?

Journeyman: PC

Wombat: which o/s?

Journeyman: Windows 98

Tonebone: unless you have a tiny amount of RAM, it shouldn't be a problem...

AuntiAlias: it used to be a preference option in Bryce 2 Win, right?

Wombat: I can't see why you'd be limited....

AuntiAlias: I think that's one for Thursday too...

Journeyman: yes

AuntiAlias: Brian and Ales can answer that for you...

Tonebone: Windows 98 should take care of all swap file settings automatically

Journeyman: well my computer is always going slowly, like this scene for example, I have 3500 objects and more to come

AuntiAlias: well.. that's just 3500 objects! : )

Tonebone: LOL

AuntiAlias: slows things down!

Journeyman: okay thanks

done

Wombat: ah, you need a cray, is the problem.

AuntiAlias: Odie-- ask your question! :D

Odie: I know this sounds dumb, but how big should I make my far terrains - how many strokes of the '*' key? Mine never look right - they have no grandure.

dawn: ?

Journeyman: to make a world look large

AuntiAlias: not a dumb question at all!

Journeyman: you have to make everything look large

AuntiAlias: anyone else wanna take this (I'll chime in in a bit)

Journeyman: some of my terrains are 16000 across

ThreeD: ?

Tonebone: I trick I use is to turn smoothing off for distant terrains, it makes them look more knobbly and realistic

AuntiAlias: wow... gonna check out the 16000 one....

Wombat: I would be playing with the pov?

Tonebone: and turn the ambience up slightly in the material editor..

Journeyman: here is an address for you

http://www.halcyon.com/alrives/brycetips/masters/landscape1/main.html

they talk about it

pixelpusher: ?

AuntiAlias: Here's my thoughts on it....

Odie: Already I see the error of my ways - fear of huge terrains!

AuntiAlias: the thing that gives the illustion of size is this

Haze

the more moisture in the air, the more "air" there is... it's a trick of the eye

i don't usually go up to 16000 sized terrains... so on that, your mileage may vary

Journeyman: well that was a very special case

AuntiAlias: but if you're putting in terrains as you create them, and they're just puny as they are far away....

then they'll look.. well.. puny

Journeyman: but tons of mine are in the thousands

AuntiAlias: but larger terrains and haze will create that illusion of size

yes, the farther away they are, the larger they hafta be in order to be really big! :D

Tonebone is next !

Odie: I'll go back to the rendering-board and hit that * key a few more times - thanks

Tonebone: Easy one this.. Anyone know a site where all the Easter Eggs are posted?

AuntiAlias: queue: dawn, ThreeD, pixelpusher

Wombat: ..... so do I understand correclty that you don't need everything to be exactly to scale, just add haze?

Heather: !

Journeyman: no Wombat, she means it is better to make everything real size to get that hazy look at all proper distances

AuntiAlias: some older easter egg sites: Bryce 2, mine, Bryce 3D, Klaus Busse's.... anyone know of any for Bryce 4?

AuntiAlias: Heather, is your comment about the matters at hand? if so, go for it!

Heather: It seems to me that everything in the distance looks hazy to the human eye, and indistinct, so haze would as AA says

immediately give the illusion of distance

AuntiAlias: right! :D

(especially if you live in the L.A area where there's moisture at night and the nearby mountains disappear in summertime!)

anyone else know about easter egg sites for bryce?

Tonebone: hehe I thought it was an easy question!!

AuntiAlias: tonebon, wanna start one?

Wombat: Ok, so that's HAZE in LA?

I need to make mine browner.

Tonebone: I would if I knew any Susan!

AuntiAlias: heh heh heh

Wombat: ?

AuntiAlias: well, you find some easter eggs in the chat logs.. Q & A with ales and brian tends to bring them to the surface!

Tonebone: Do you think an Email to the metafolks would be fruitful?

3d~?~elf: find a new egg?

AuntiAlias: hmmm... possibly.. but if there is one, it's out there, not on Meta's site...

but Ales and Brian know the eggs, all right! : )

dawn: eggs?

AuntiAlias: easter eggs.. in Bryce

Betty: there's a one or two here http://www.kagi.com/busse/BSolutions/BSolutions.html

AuntiAlias: a list of 'em on the web

Journeyman: An easter egg is what they call an undocumented feature in bryce

AuntiAlias: right.. Klaus has some...: )

life is full of undocumented features

let us know what you find, Tonebon! :D

dawn... go for it!

Wombat: (ok, that answers my "?")

AuntiAlias: (eek, I mean Tonebone)

dawn: I'm working on creating a volumetric texture in Bryce - specifically hair - It looks like a cloud

I want it to appear more stringy

dawn: it is too soft N fluffy

any suggestions?

AuntiAlias: you doing it in the DTE?

Journeyman: <who knew newbie Q and A would be so darn hard? :-)>

ThreeD: This might be a simply question also. But since I'm new at this.... Besides landscapes, can you also create a room or an indoor scene with Bryce?

dawn: yes

Tonebone: my ISP tripped out just at the wrong moment! Sorry Susan, could you perhaps cut and paste any responses to my question?

AuntiAlias: I'd say that the filtering with clip to get more contrast between there and not-there

you have too many shades of gray, hence the fuzz

Betty: here's one Tony that has a few http://www.kagi.com/busse/BSolutions/BSolutions.html

AuntiAlias: AuntiAlias: hmmm... possibly.. but if there is one, it's out there, not on Meta's site...

but Ales and Brian know the eggs, all right! : )

Tonebone: Thanks Betty

AuntiAlias: Betty: there's a one or two here http://www.kagi.com/busse/BSolutions/BSolutions.html

Tonebone: OK I'll try the email :)

AuntiAlias: : )

dawn, does that help?

you using more than 1 component?

dawn: yes -

AuntiAlias: try the combination filter...

dawn: Im using 3 comp

AuntiAlias: set it to either clip.. or quantize (with 2 levels for C).. to make either black or white.. maybe 3 levels...

dawn: Actually I started off with the planked wood texture and altered it

AuntiAlias: : )

let's see.. ThreeD asked his/her question.. now it's pixelpusher's turn

pixelpusher: Is there a way to incorporate a Poser 4.0 animation into Bryce4 terrain ?

AuntiAlias: into a terrain? how so a terrain?

renato!: into a terrain! ouch!

pixelpusher: On to a terrain

renato!: sounds like an X-Files show I saw Sunday nite

Tonebone: Do you mean a scene pixel?

AuntiAlias: or have a poser figure walk/crawl/dance/saunter on the surface of a terrain?

pixelpusher: Well, incorporate them both together

yes

Tonebone: You don't want the terrain to move surely?!

pixelpusher: no

just the poser animation

Wombat: you mean, coordinate the path with the terrain?

AuntiAlias: I think what pixel pusher means is to import poser figure *and* the animation created in Poser into Bryce, right?

AuntiAlias: so that animation and model are brought into Bryce....

3d~?~elf: ?

pixelpusher: yes,

AuntiAlias: I'm not sure that is possible. I'd have to find out more about that. ANyone else been working with Poser 4?

Tonebone: I haven't got poser4 but I think this is acedemic anyway, I don't know of any to import poser part paths into Bryce..

AuntiAlias: John!

(he may have this in the background.... )

Tonebone: hehe... Just what I thought, have you got his telephone number Susan?

AuntiAlias: I"m on it! :D

hmm... we may have to wait for more of an answer to that....

3d~?~elf: is he taking a lil nap?...>g<

Purusha: ?

3d~?~elf: have a metasynth ?

AuntiAlias: don't know where he is....

how about if we table that one for now, pending more info from John?

(tho I think the answer re: importing animation is still no)

3d elf.. your question?

3D elf is either typing or is also taking a lil nap... : )

3d~?~elf: what does it do?...i'm looking for something that will make 'noise' w/out any periferals

AuntiAlias: oh... metasynth is not a metacreations product.. it was written by Eric Wenger, who's the author or Bryce (in earlier incarnations)

www.uisoftware.com

is the place for inforamtion on it

I think you can download a demo version of it...

3d~?~elf: ok, no experience with it, yourself?

Tonebone: Mac only, unfortunately

AuntiAlias: limited experience, and long enough ago... but if you want to make just aural noise-noise, you can do it using that, I believe....

3d~?~elf: damn, that link came up so fast, i was barely off the klik from this window...

AuntiAlias: Purusha... ask away!!

Purusha: was the earlier question if you can bring an animation (animated texture or otherwise) into a Bryce scene and have it render ok? Like I have a QT movie I want to map onto a 2D face and have it reflect off of animated Bryce water... (sorry if repeat)

AuntiAlias: Bryce doesn't do rotoscoping that way....

been a feature request...

renato, you've done some roto-by-hand, haven't you?

(it depends how many frames, I guess)

Wombat: (woss roto-scoping?)

Purusha: yeah woss that?

AuntiAlias: oh....

compositing animation

next time you see ccasady in here, ask him what rotoscoping is! : ) (He's done tons!)

renato!: hey

what's the story?

AuntiAlias: have you done roto/image compositing in an animation in bryce, renato?

renato!: rotoscoping... can be done, but it's laborious

yeah, I did a 4 second video segment that played inside of a 'viewer' kind of thing

basically, it's a frame-by-frame process, as you could prolly imagine

>>>> Next up: Renato!'s laborious rotoscope technique (in detail)
