BryceTalk Novice Q n A
|
BryceTalk Novice Q & A, July 13, 1999Morbius: New to Bryce4! It's great! When I download a DEM file, is there any way I can accurately adjust the height, etc., to reflect the ACTUAL scale of the terrain? Heather: Thankx Jeffric: Heather its Roll On Floor Laughing oh, too late ! AuntiAlias: Well, MOrbius, looks like you're getting us started with the Q & A... Morbius: A dirty job....but AuntiAlias: (It's never too late to roll on the floor and laugh, Jeffric!) Heather: That's ok - maybe I'll really remember it now. AuntiAlias: welcome! ThreeD! you found it! Journeyman: Lise is coming in too :-) Tonebone: Hi 3D ThreeD: It's about time, is't it. AuntiAlias: So... a little intro, even tho Morbius has kicked things off... Lise: *-) AuntiAlias: for those of you who've been around for a while with Bryce.. remember the first scenes? the magic? the possibility? watching that render progress and thinking, "this is so cool!!" ? Tonebone: ah halcyon days! AuntiAlias: and then, in time, you discovered one thing, and another.... and you saw how much depth and power is in Bryce.... Journeyman: I was actually thinking "this is so slow" but anyway :-) AuntiAlias: lol.. Jeffric: all those chrome spheres hovering over water !! AuntiAlias: how long has everyone been brycing? Beartrap: don't knock tradition Jeff Morbius: a month Journeyman: A year AuntiAlias: <--since a little before 1.0 ThreeD: Not long for me Tonebone: 9 months now :) Lise: Seems like forever. LOL Betty: a year+; Jeffric: since feb 98 Beartrap: 18 months or so Heather: 3 months B4, 8 months B2 - but interrupted by events. Lots to go back to Tonebone: best 150 quid I ever spent (plus upgrade) Journeyman: Actually I don't know in terms of years, but I saw bryce 2 in a flyer as more or less new Heather: Right, Tonebone, I agree. It's way above dozens and dozens and dozens of movies Clothes AuntiAlias: lol... Betty: lol Heather: It's magic - and I hardly know it at all AuntiAlias: so... some new, some old, some in between... AuntiAlias: our first question was posed by Morbius.. let me copy and paste it Morbius: New to Bryce4! It's great! When I download a DEM file, is there any way I can accurately adjust the height, etc., to reflect the ACTUAL scale of the terrain? Anyone got any clues on that one? Morbius: I'm at a loss.... AuntiAlias: greets, JOhn... Tonebone: Hi John, MetaJohn: Hi Heather: I don't even know what a DEM file is. ThreeD: I'm a little too new for that too. Morbius: digital elevation module AuntiAlias: DEM file stands for Digital Elevation Map or Model Tonebone: Morbius, have you tried "keep gradient" option in terrains? AuntiAlias: or module? Heather: Thanks. Morbius: Model....you're right. renato!: hi lise AuntiAlias: The question is, how high, on the Y axis, should you make the terrain so that it's accurate? it involves knowing the following things: Morbius: Tonebone, no I haven't. AuntiAlias: what is the range from the highest elevation to the lowest elevation... and what is the area covered (width and length) It's been a while since I've worked with DEMs, so I don't know how to extract that information... Tonebone: it might work... it's under the little arrow at the bottom of the grid density icon ... AuntiAlias: Morbius, what platform are you using? Morbius: Mac AuntiAlias: but.. see... what Morbius wants to know, or needs to extract from the DEM itself is the range of elevation... let me try something... Morbius: That's coorect. AuntiAlias: I had a utility that went on the CD to by book, The KPT Bryce Book, written by Ken Badertscher, called DEMView... Tonebone: oops! sorry, should have read the question more carefully :) AuntiAlias: it was written for Bryce 1 and would give you the information for scaling I haven't tried out the app on a PowerPC renato!: ftp://ftp.metatools.com/pub/Applications/misc/DEMview1.0.sea.bin AuntiAlias: tho I heard from others that it didn't work er.. I mean, a G3... Morbius: I've heard that somewhere in the model itself (possible along the edge of the wireframe) are where the actual coordinates are located, but haven't been able to find them. AuntiAlias: renato! wow! cool! renato!: L) Morbius: Forgot where I read that. AuntiAlias: try downloading that... renato!: :) AuntiAlias: it will give you information about the height range... Morbius: Wow! Thanks for that! I'll be downloading. |

AuntiAlias: renato, have you tried it out? renato!: yep Morbius: great! AuntiAlias: renato did the DEM tutorial that is on the Metacreations Bryce web site renato!: works just fine. the min/max elevations read out at the lower left AuntiAlias: okay... there you go... renato!: er, upper left AuntiAlias: so... if you know the area involved width and length renato!: there's an equivalent app for the PeeCee but I don't recall where or what name Morbius: thank you, thank you , thank you.... AuntiAlias: then you can assign the height proportionately let us know what happens! and how it turns out! okay! :D Morbius: Boy, this is a productive lunch break!!! AuntiAlias: questions? questions? anyone got a question? if so, then type ? Journeyman: Here is a question, maybe not a newbie question... ? AuntiAlias: go for it, Janak! Morbius: Got more if you can stand it!? Journeyman: Has anyone ever tried to see how many objects bryce will handle? AuntiAlias: as much as your RAM can handle, I guess.... Tonebone: hehe.. that's a good one ! AuntiAlias: I don't know if there's an upper limit.. that's one for Ales and Brian.. if you'll be around on Thursday, by all means, ask! joan001: that makes sense Journeyman: okay, done Tonebone: I don't think it it Susan, I have 256meg here and still suffer from time to time :( Wombat: Okie then, another newbie one -> is there any way of using graphics acceleration to speed up the rendering process in Bryce? Jeffric: don't think so Wombat, rendering is processor only as far as I nkow AuntiAlias: Graphics acceleration works for faster display of objects in wireframe mode/open GL, etc.... Tonebone: Second that Jeff.. AuntiAlias: render is processor. What Jeffric said Morbius: When animating the camera from the top view, I can't see enough detail on the terrain grid to keep from running into mountains and such. I know you can also look from the side, front, back, etc., but it's still hard to keep from flying through mountains. What am I doing wrong? AuntiAlias: Anyone got an answer? Tonebone: try using Sree3d Wombat: Aunti, please explain? Morbius: What's Sree3d? AuntiAlias: Morbius, do you have Bryce launched right now? Tonebone: sorry, rendering mode for the workspace in Bryce Morbius: Yes. AuntiAlias: on the right hand side, lower right.... Morbius: yes... AuntiAlias: are display wireframe controls (by the way, shift T always brings BryceTalk up to the top) Wombat: Ok, I see em. AuntiAlias: there are two, no, three things you can do to adjust your detail.... you can make the wireframe resolution higher... (those are the numbers) Morbius: I see a wireframe globe. AuntiAlias: then you can adjust the depth cueing.... to display more information about the height.. so you can see what' s high and what's low it is above the globe... Morbius: Gotcha. AuntiAlias: run your mouse over the right hand side... the little grid with pop up menu.. that is for wireframe resolution... the little box below that has options to it that are pretty interesting... (wehre to find Sree 3D) press the mouse down on that box, and there's a pop-up menu... default wireframe, Sree 3D, and Open GL Morbius: I are dumb. Never used that gizmo yet! Thanks! Told ya I'm new. REAL new! AuntiAlias: that's what we're here for!! to answer these kindsa questions! Morbius: Yup, it's there alright! Pepsi break. Back in a sec. AuntiAlias: other questions? other answers? Wombat: Erm still don't get the last bits Aunti. Journeyman: are we talking about the Wireframe Rez menu? Wombat: When I hit the cube,.... joan001: you can also go under Edit, Preferences and click on Launch to Previous States to make it ALWAYS come up in Sree3D if you want... Wombat: .. it just toggles between three modes AuntiAlias: rather than clicking the icon, press your mouse down and keep it down. A menu should appear Beartrap: click and hold to bring up the full menu Tonebone: Nice one Joan, I didn't know that! AuntiAlias: very good tip, Joan! :D Morbius: My life becomes instantly wonderful! Thanks all!! joan001: thanks :)
