BryceTalk Bi-i-i-i-ig Bryce Scenes, July 8, 1999
part 2

AuntiAlias: Queue: Journeyman, Hil, desdanova.... Clay, and Hil, go ahead and discuss it.. this is good!!

Journeyman: Me too, it can be hard to get a good scene without texturing to see what it looks like the whole way through, I believe textures make the scene in many situations (I read your mind Clay)

Clay: heheh

Journeyman: done

AuntiAlias: yeah, that's what the render button for removing textures is good for...

Clay: :-)

AuntiAlias: go ahead and texxture and then "take 'em away" for a render...

Hil, did you have a question?

Ringo: If I may...Clay...thats why I would like to have texture support in OpenGL...could see the textures on the fly.

Hilofoz: I agree, but if you are building, just do a test. Yes, that is excellent for cutting that down.

Clay: that would be cool Ringo

Journeyman: !

Hilofoz: The ? referred to journeyıs comment, and has been answered

Clay: (done)

AuntiAlias: desdanova.... go for it

desdanova: render to disk, instead of normal render... about 20% faster (my experience)

done

AuntiAlias: Journeyman!

Journeyman: if you can help it, make the texture maps as small as possible to save space (at least that is what I heard) As small as possible and still look good of course.

Hilofoz: Agreed, R to D is very fast.

Journeyman: done

AuntiAlias: that's for 2D image textures, right?

Journeyman: yes

Clay: !

AuntiAlias: Clay, go for it!

Clay: I find that using a texture map at 320x240 at 72 dpi works pretty good:-)

not to big and not to small

Journeyman: ?

gdmsynth: It depends on the size you scale it does't it Clay?

Clay: done

AuntiAlias: For those of you who just joined us, we're discussing tips for wokring with large Bryce scenes...

Clay: not necissarily

GD

Hilofoz: !

AuntiAlias: and there's a great crowd of experienced builders.... all sharing tips...

gdmsynth: Why not?

AuntiAlias: please join in... by typing

!

if you have a tip!

I'll call on you...

gdmsynth: Unless you tile that is.

AuntiAlias: Journeyman...

Clay: all my image's textures are set at just that size

Journeyman: Does JPG instead of BMP help? the files are smaller on your hard drive.are they smaller in the bryce file?

AuntiAlias: If you have a question, please type ?

Clay: I use the camera for scale

gdmsynth: You've got some beautiful images too Clay!

dengar: ?

Clay: thanks

AuntiAlias: Anyone got an answer for Journeyman?

gdmsynth: Hmmm I was asking about scaling the texture.

MplsOiBoi: Is there a reference image?

Clay: but I use parametric

for most image maps

done

Topaz: ?

AuntiAlias: No, Mpls... we're all discussing tips for working with large Bryce scenes...

Hi, go for it!

MplsOiBoi: Okey doke.

Journeyman: Go ahead Susan, not important

Hilofoz: Keep terrain rez sizes down if needs be.

AuntiAlias: dengar, topaz, you're in the queue

okay, then, dengar.. go for it

Clay: !

MplsOiBoi: ?

AuntiAlias: queue: topaz, Clay, MplsOiBoi

Journeyman: <guys type out what you want to said while you are wating and when your name is called, just hit enter>

dengar: Sorry I hope this relates.. I'm creating several Big screnes that involve LW objects and I'm having trouble importing them. I was wondering if anyone lese is having trouble - I'd really like to add a few LW object to my scenes!

AuntiAlias: (if you have a question or a tip, please type it ahead of time so that you can just press return when I call on you! :D )

GMTA, Journeyman!

AuntiAlias: So your scene files are already big to begin with and the LW objects aren't coming in like you want them to?

Anyone who has any advice for dengar, please type A

dengar: Err, actually the program just up and quits. Anyone else had this trouble? I'm begining to think its a technical issue.

AuntiAlias: ram?

i.e., how much...

dengar: 384 MB Open GL 8.5 system.

AuntiAlias: well you have enough ram... ; )

Clay: how big are the model Sizes?

Journeyman: A

I think I have had this problem too, but only on the LW files, you might like to try another file type

AuntiAlias: there was a log of a chat from a couple of weeks ago where we discussed importing/exporting scenes...

desdanova: how much ram for bryce?

gdmsynth: <Dengar> It really pays to try to keep imported object size down. When you add the Bryce terrains and all it really adds up!

dengar: Not too big... just over 4500 polygons. Mostly its text or simple poly models.

AuntiAlias: Journeyman, go for it...

Journeyman: I already did, sorry...

I will post again

I think I have had this problem too, but only on the LW files, you might like to try another file type

AuntiAlias: oh, Journeyman.. I see you did! 'sokay

Clay: text there's the problem

Journeyman: done

gdmsynth: 4500 polys shouldn't be a problem.

Clay: JIM!

(sorry)

AuntiAlias: the other thing about objects is that they have to be legal solids, right?

Clay: right

AuntiAlias: I'm not the most hep on 3D import/export...

dengar: Okay! I'll try that! I was wondering if the Apple Open GL extensions might be the culprit.

Journeyman: Text should be fine I think, I have imported a lot of text with no problems (Try Elefont which uses Dxf)

AuntiAlias: do go check the chat log from a coupla weeks ago

http://www.metacreations.com/products/bryce4/talk/events.cfm

has a list of logs

from previous chats. this was discussed previously...

dengar: will do Aunti! :) Thanks for the advice all, and Susan - keep up the good work on the books.

AuntiAlias: you'll see, at least, who's got more experiene with that sorta thing.. maybe you see them online, here, too...

AuntiAlias: okay.. a moment while I go back and check who's next in the queue

dengar: take care all!

Journeyman: bye

AuntiAlias: topaz, you're on!

Topaz: I think this has already been asked, though...

I was going to ask about ram

(how much is a good amount?)

Clay: Bryce needs at least 64 mg

renderin': a gig

AuntiAlias: As much as you can get!!

renderin': :)

Journeyman: 100+ is good for most medium size files

gdmsynth: It depends on the file size.

Topaz: ok, silly question :P

AuntiAlias: tho I've never worked with more than 130-140 or so to Bryce

Topaz: is 256 good?

Journeyman: I have 98 and I can handle about 60mb

Clay: it also depends on your bus speed on your system

Journeyman: that should be really good Topaz

Clay: for rendering speeds

AuntiAlias: Queue: Clay, MplsOiBoi

AuntiAlias: 256 is excellent!

Topaz: too bad i only have half that :)

gdmsynth: I'm rendering a 137M file with only 128M RAM and virtual memory set to 384M

AuntiAlias: For those of you who've just joined us, we're discussing working with large scene files... and sharing tips and asking questions...

If you have a tip, please type !

and if you have a question, please type

?

Done, Topaz?

Clay: go for it!!

Clay: I have also found that when making a greyscale in Photoshop or whatever, for a terrain, that a 220x220 image size at 72 dpi works pretty well, then high rez it in Bryce to get good effects, Done. (book stuff I think or just my experimentin I dunnoLOL!!)

AuntiAlias: MplsOiBoi

MplsOiBoi: In 3D Studio Max there's an optimization function which helps reduce the number of faces in a scene, this is usually done after modeling is completed and before rendering (of course). Is there a similar function in B4? Also, can bus speed be improved?

AuntiAlias: No, not a similar function in Bryce, Mpls

MplsOiBoi: :(

AuntiAlias: bus speed.. that's a hardware issue, seems like to me

Clay: ( bus speed is increased with a faster puter)

MplsOiBoi: Motherboard dependent, eh? Thought so.

Double :(

AuntiAlias: We've got a lull in the queue here!

jpladue: howdy yall

Clay: you can trick it a little but not much

Rivak: oh uh...?

AuntiAlias: If you have a tip, please type ! and if you've got a question, type ?

Rivak, if you got a question, go for it!

Rivak: no just filling the queue...

done ;)

Journeyman: Has to go now, good night all, it has been fun, hope I could help

AuntiAlias: A N N O U N C E M E N T:

Next Thursday: Q & A with the Bryce engineers....

:D

jpladue: ooooh

gdmsynth: ?

MplsOiBoi: Oooo...

jpladue: groovy

Clay: cya Janak

Clay: ooo the main guys!

AuntiAlias: yeah.. gonna do Q & A monthly.. one month on thursday chat, next month with Tuesday chat...

AuntiAlias: so... it's Thursday's turn! :D

Lise: Great idea!

AuntiAlias: gdmsynth.. your question?

gdmsynth: How do you move your cameras around a large scene?

Clay: A

AuntiAlias: uh, first, you read the log to the camera discussion that we had on Tuesday a coupla weeks ago

some good tips there

Clay, go for it...

Clay: I use tracking on an invisible sphere usually

AuntiAlias: Yes, that's one I just discovered recently... good for moving in tight spaces

gdmsynth: Good idea!

desdanova: ?

Clay: it's just like in Infini-D

AuntiAlias: the "den" scene that is in the BryceCamp HTML Image Map scene is all enclosed... that way for moving camera was great

des, go for it

desdanova: How do you deal with object placement when you merge multiple scenes together?

AuntiAlias: A

MplsOiBoi: URL Susan?

Clay: A

AuntiAlias: p.s. BryceCamp image map... http://www.metacreations.com/products/bryce4/community/project.cfm

MplsOiBoi: Tank ya.

AuntiAlias: I do merging this way

make main scene.. place object there to begin with...

AuntiAlias: then... when it comes time to work on it more, say, to hone it lots... I select everything else BUT...

and then save the scene file with different name...

then, when I go to merge, it's already in place!

desdanova: cool! <G>

AuntiAlias: Otherwise, I just have merged object(s) selected and work with them to get them to size/place

Clay... go for it

Clay: color code the groups and name them, and keep a sense of scale about your objects, then once in the scene I place where I want them.

same thing

LOL!!

gdmsynth: ?

AuntiAlias: For those of you who've just joined us, we're discussing working with large scene files... and sharing tips and asking questions...

If you have a tip, please type !

and if you have a question, please type

?

gdmsynth.. go for it..

gdmsynth: How do you go about merging? Save as an object?

AuntiAlias: merging: you have a host file and a "guest" file that will be merged into the host file...

Merge command is under File > Merge...

So, when in the "host" scene file, select File > MErge...

gdmsynth: A feature I haven't explored! Wow!

AuntiAlias: find name of guest scene file and then Bryce imports it

Hilofoz: ?

gdmsynth: Sounds great for large scenes.

AuntiAlias: what happens is that objects in new scene come in selected...

AuntiAlias: and in plaec

so...

first I ususally go to Solo Mode (they are all selected, right?!)

and delete anything that I don't want to have in file

(like ground plane?)

I also do that with things that cause long render time

AuntiAlias: I did that with lights... just two objects..

had 'em in place all right,

but they were gonna take up oodles of render time

so, instead, I just created a "light merger" scene file and merged the lights back in when I was ready to render

gdmsynth: Can't you just turn lights off? Hidden?

AuntiAlias: so you can merge with small scene files

hmmm.. this was in Bryce 2, back before objects could be hidden3

gdmsynth: Oh I'm a B4 newbie...

AuntiAlias: haven't tried hiding lights... hmmm! interesting idea!!
