BryceTalk (Tues) Bryce Lights, July 6, 1999
part 4

AuntiAlias: eilif... your question?

eilif: I have (only once) observed, 2d pict objects receive no shadows? had one as a floor, accidentally removed it and suddenly I had the shadows I wanted! Am I insane or just immensely newbie?

JPSullivan: (Programmer)

AuntiAlias: or you have a high ambience setting on your pictures, so that the picture object "resists" shadows

Journeyman: hey if anyone is interested in waves I have a water program i am making, you can check it out here http://www.wheel-of-life.com/waves.html

Clay: yep

AuntiAlias: or has setting "receive shadows" disabled in Shading mode pop-up menu.

eilif: could've been the ambience on that 2d

Clay: here's one using multiple volume visible radial lights: http://www.phase2.net/claygraphics/thereactor.html

and using the sun to set the ambience

Tonebone: Looks very promising Janak

Journeyman: thank you

Tonebone: In fact, it looks brilliant!

JPSullivan: Very Nice.

AuntiAlias: Janak, we didn't talk about the image in http://www.wheel-of-life.com/water4.jpg

You showed us a result of using it. I think there was a question about how you made it...

DreamVoyager: Clay, I love the quality of your work. You are meticulous. I also enjoy the slightly morose mood in your mechanics.

Tonebone: Does the proggie create the greyscale?

Journeyman: well I made it with that wave program I am working on

Clay: well thank you:-)

Journeyman: yes it does Tone

JeffP: OK..Thanks Journeyman.

Journeyman: the program is only about 5 lines long that did that

Croaker: Clay, how is the game Shahnra going?

Journeyman: I am going to keep working on it off and on and hope to get a very simple version for those of you who want to make waves

Clay: (it's halted for now Croaker)

Tonebone: I'll be first in the queue Janak :)

Journeyman: I imagine a lot of people will want it

DreamVoyager: Journey... Id love to try it out.

Croaker: Journey, I seem to recall a fractal wave generator someone made a few years ago...it was a stand alone thing, though

Journeyman: I will have some textures and skies that go well with it I will put for download too

DreamVoyager: clay... your working on pics for a game?

Clay: yeah that's what my whole site is DV

AuntiAlias: Yes, there've been requests for Waves World on PeeCee platform.. nice to see that there's something for waves in the works! :D :D :D :D :D

Journeyman: mine will be also croaker..

DreamVoyager: Cool

Journeyman: well mine will unfortunately be PC only

AuntiAlias: Mighta been Waves World you were thinking of, Croaker... Mark Hessenflow. MacOS only

Clay: (now if I can just find an investorLOL!!!)

Croaker: Yeah, that might be it

Tonebone: I'm beginning to think I ought to get a Mac :(

Clay: is it still out there Susan?

Journeyman: I hope to make this more than just waves as time goes on

Tonebone: A new terragen Janak? heheh

Croaker: Clay, imvestors are not so hard to find....

Clay: I know

AuntiAlias: Janak, did you use your new app to make the wave pattern that you used for your water caustics (getting back to lighting here for a moment, ahem! ; ) ?

Journeyman: nope, mine is going to only be an app for people with other programs to use

yes I did susan

DreamVoyager: Journey... I booked that page... keep an update there on whats hapening, please.

Journeyman: I will try to

DreamVoyager: :-)

Journeyman: http://www.wheel-of-life.com/waves28.jpg that is the last one I rendered

AuntiAlias: aaah! cool! The nice thing is to have both wave form and light to match... (my usual DTE method of making light caustics doesn't work that way)

Journeyman: I don't know if you have seenit already

I used the wave concept for those caustics

AuntiAlias: that one is sweet...

Journeyman: intersecting waves that are combined

thank you

this program can also be used for sand dunes

and (maybe sometime) drapes

eilif: dunes....

Journeyman: and dunes, yes

AuntiAlias: Any other questions about lights? There was a request for lighting tips in general... to whomever asked for tips.... didja get enough in this chat to point you in some new directions?

SunDogDeb: Oh, yes!

JPSullivan: Thank you all for the wonderful inspiring works. All great stuff. I am off to create some scaffoldings! (With lighting, of course!) :-)

Clay: http://www.phase2.net/claygraphics/Theprobehive2.html

JPSullivan: Bye all . . .

DreamVoyager: Journey... make it a plug-in for B4?

Clay: here's a ton of lights in one scene

Tonebone: Here's a demo of caustics.. it's an old one but may give a few people a few ideas: http://www.tonebone.demon.co.uk/art/3poseidon3.jpg

Journeyman: I don't know how to program that,, yet

DreamVoyager: Im sure some nice Meta people will tell you :-)

Tonebone: Love that image Clay, the green tones really set it off nicely

Clay: Thanks:-)

DreamVoyager: Clay... send some of your pics to some SciFi mag, if youve not allready done that.

Hoffr: just want to interject, by the way, phenominal images, all of you

Clay: I'm in the process of working with the Asimov Foundation

Journeyman: thanks a lot Hoffr

DreamVoyager: cool

AuntiAlias: : )

Clay: thanks

Tonebone: Good one clay, well deserved

Hoffr: ':) you deserve the credit, i can see a lot of work went into these

Journeyman: on which project, if I may ask Clay?

Clay: thanks Tbone

AuntiAlias: I'll add my thanks and appreciation for the images I've seen... Janak, Clay.. and Tonebone-- wow!

eilif: I still want those bed sheets!

AuntiAlias: Thanks for sharing tips on lighting with us... My eyes were certainly opened to some new possibilties! :D

Clay: I done that book cover, if you remember

Rosy: Let there be light! LOL

Journeyman: Yeah, I could do that too, bed sheets :-)

Tonebone: I'll think about it eilif... send me an email

Cosmic_Cookie: I would like to thank all of you too. I learn so much from these talks...great work everyone and thank you for sharing.

RayDeX: Ah OK now I found it....

AuntiAlias: Log will be posted!

Oh.. next week

Newbies chat!

Remember when you first got Bryce and you thought that just anything rendering .. simply anything was the cat's meow?

Rosy: and Thursday????

Clay: thanks Cosmic

AuntiAlias: (that's a question for those of you who've been at it a while...)

Well, there are plenty like that here, now...

Croaker: Mirrored spheres...8)

AuntiAlias: so.. want to invite all the new Brycers out of the woodwork to ask questions...

SunDogDeb: ?

AuntiAlias: and those of us who've been around the block a few times can answer them!

That's next Tuesday

as for Thursday...

Clay: (janak, after doing this cover: http://www.phase2.net/claygraphics/ nootide_night_book_cover_d.htm) I may do some more work for the foundation)

AuntiAlias: we'll be discussing Bi-i-i-i-iig complex scenes.

the ones with tons of objects

Rosy: good! Thanks Aunti

Clay: oooo big scenes:-)

DreamVoyager: LOL... Mirrored spheres... I made some extreemly surreal pics using that in an unconventional way. But it was too much for my PB165c... so I never got them rendered untill I got a PPC

AuntiAlias: how do you manage?

Tonebone: prob with that url clay :(

Journeyman: looks like the stocks are falling Clay

AuntiAlias: (I want volunteer Brycers who've made scenes that gave their CPUs hernias... let's discuss!!)

Clay: thay are janak LOL

Journeyman: take the bracket off the end
