BryceTalk "My Current Project" — July 1, 1999
part 4

Wolfie.. You're on!

Wolfie: Working on my current project, http://members.xoom.com/avwolfie/Transporter.jpg (first full render of this project) have encountered some problems importing textures from poser 3.1 to bryce 4

Susan: Tell us about your project!

Wolfie: I looked at the tut on peter sharp's page just to check myself out again as this is the first time with Poser3.1 and Bryce 4 combo (previouslly was poser3 and bryce 3.1).

I ended up sliding the tex along the y axis -67 bu to get it to line up...any one else with this prob?

Wolfie: Here are two images finally aligned: http://members.xoom.com/avwolfie/fig.jpg and http://members.xoom.com/avwolfie/fig1.jpg Nevermind the hair in the first pic. I found that I had to slide the hair tex down -67bu also

Wolfie: if anyone wants it, the acoustic tile for use in TE is at http://members.xoom.com/avwolfie/acoustictile1024L.jpg

Susan: what is the alignment problem you'r etrying to solve?

Wolfie: why should I have to slide it along the Y axis?

in B3, you simply imported the OBJ and loaded the TIF

Susan: (great acoustic stuff there, btw!!) I haven't done a lot of Poser to Bryce stuff myself, so I don't have any suggestions for you.. anyone else?

Wolfie: I rarely use poser stuff too that is why I am trying to understand why I have to move it when I didn't use to in B3/P3

Susan: anyone?

Calyxa: "it" being the hair? I thought to get the texture to map correctly, the hair could not be a part of the group you are texturing...?

Wolfie: ...and a hush felll over the room

Calyxa: but I haven't done any poser stuff with B4 yet.

Wolfie: it wasn't

Wolfie: only the body...the tunic and hair were not part of the group I was texturing

those were textured seperately

had to slide the hair -67 also

Calyxa: did you rotate the texture map 180 ?

Wolfie: yep...just made it worse

and backwards

Calyxa: you're using a poser 3 figure and a poser 3 texture map, yes?

Wolfie: poser 3.1 yes to both

Gigabyte: Hi everyone

Calyxa: you sure you rotated 180 about the proper axis? (I forget which one, but it's clearly spelled out in Ed Baument's tutorial...)

Susan: those of you who recently arrived... we're going through n talking about "my current project" right now Wolfie's project is currently being discussed

Wolfie: X, and I have the printed PDF here in front of me

Gigabyte: k

Wolfie: I also for a wild hair...tried 180 on Y and Z too

Gigabyte: am I still here?

oh!

OK,

Calyxa: no more ideas...

Gigabyte: something happened

Wolfie: when I rotated them, the printing outside the figure was backwards ON the figure

Susan: Gigabyte.... : ) please... sssh! thanks!

Wolfie: Seems strange that the figure AND the hair TIFs had to be slid the same ammount

Susan: And there are no other Poser aficianados here?

by slid, this was altering the position of the texture in Bryce's Materials Lab?

Wolfie: yes, the bottom most control on the EDIT window (cube)

Susan: right...

Wolfie: Guess we have a stumper here...

Susan: well, you want to leave an email address?

Wolfie: I sent the file to elf to tinker with

Susan: mebbe someone who reads the log will have an anwer for you...

Wolfie: wolfie@comports.com

Susan: answer

cool!

Wolfie: last note....

I talked to MC tech support today. Those of you who are planning to upgrade to QT4, MC says there is a conflict with it and Bryce3D (won't work anymore) and also Bryce4. They are working on a fix for Bryce4, but he indicated NOT for Bryce3.

So for now, I would suggest sticking with QT3

Susan: did you get any elaboration on what the nature of the conflict is?

Wolfie: We were just talking and I mentiuoned I was about to upgrade it and he said to hold off

I assume it would have to do with mov output but I didn't pursue it and took his advice to hold off

Gigabyte: I've already upgraded

everything seems to be fine

Susan: so've I....

Wolfie: ?

Calyxa: ditto...

Susan: platform?

Wolfie: Steve at MC said otherwise

PC here

Susan: <--Mac, mostly...

Wolfie: Could be a PC and not MAC?

Susan: that might very well be...

Gigabyte: I have mac

Wolfie: Caly, yr a mac too right?

Susan: QuickTime has been part of the system architecture on Macs for so long....

Wolfie: Yes, but QT4 has been beta for a while now.

Susan: heh. I put QT4 on the Win machine here, oughtta try rendering an anim to see what there is to see...

Calyxa: ya

Susan: it's final.

qt 4, that is, from what I understand

Wolfie: Only recently Susan

I am not sure you can roll back to QT3 if it kills B4..

Susan: there's a deinstaller for QuickTime, so you should be able to...

well.......

Wolfie: I may throw a machine together and try it out this weekend

done for now...

Susan: we seem to be dwindling down here.....

and yours was the last one in the queue, wolfie...

Calyxa: what's the queue?

Wolfie: Yep...the poser question sure cleared out the room!

Calyxa: ah, empty...

Susan: plus, we've gone our requisite 2 hours...

: )

or our usual

Wolfie: There is a limit?

Calyxa: have you seen my "poor man's BSmooth" stuff?

Susan: attention span...

desdanova: lol

Wolfie: ?

Susan: Calyxa, go ahead and tell us about it, sure!! : )

Calyxa: OK...

Wolfie: letsc

Susan: You're always onto great things!

Calyxa: Klaus mentioned in the Euro Terrain talk a while back about .pgm format...

Wolfie: he needs to do some windows versions so we can play too

Calyxa: that was something I could wrap my brain around, so I wrote a simple c++ program that spits out .pgm files which can be imported into Bryce...

they come in as terrains, but you can change'em to lattices...

http://www.best.com/~calyxa/ pearl/0images/seamtest.jpg

the one on the left is a 128 grid lattice, the one on the right is a 1024 grid lattice.

Wolfie: More Madanna Bras! Cool!

Calyxa: I'm currently working in Java - and plan to test it out at my brother's place on his windows machine when I get something going...

Gigabyte: How do you convert them to lattices?

Susan: you do the different sizes in your app? or change from128 to 1024 in Bryce?

Calyxa: the lathing part is just an educational ramp-up...

to convert a terrain to a lattice, you use the double-ended arrow thingie on the Edit palette.

different sizes in the app.

Gigabyte: Oh...thatnx

er...thanx

Calyxa: here's the same scene file, but with a rocky texture - http://www.best.com/~calyxa/ pearl/0images/seamtest2.jpg

seams are totally invisible.

Calyxa: anyway... the ultimate goal of this is not to make lathed objects (tho that'll be nice). what I'm hoping to figure out is a way to carve roads.

I've already got a couple road tutorials...

desdanova: curved roads i'll bet

Wolfie: What about using splines?

Calyxa: but this will be easier and more accurate.

Susan: I'd like to see what it looked like when it was just a terrain, too.. just to help me undertstand what's going on....

Calyxa: you mean the g2h of the hourglass thingies?

Susan: yeah

Calyxa: that'll take me a minute... hang on.

Susan: well, not g2h but just convert to terrain

Calyxa: oh - ok...

not like this - http://www.best.com/~calyxa/ pearl/0images/pgm7.jpg

but that's an earlier test...

Susan: : )

Calyxa: turns out I don't have a render of it as "just a terrain"... but there are a couple other test pix...

Wolfie: Do you know if Klaus is going to ever get a Win port of BSmooth?

Calyxa: http://www.best.com/~calyxa/ pearl/0images/pgm11.jpg http://www.best.com/~calyxa/ pearl/0images/pgm14.jpg

I thought I saw something in that Euro Terrain talk about the schedule slipping on that or maybe not even happening...

Susan: he mentioned that in the terrain chat (there *is* a log, you know!)... and no, no plans to port it. Says he's really busy right now

Calyxa: (rendering that hourglass as 'just a terrain'...)

Susan: rendering now? currently?

Calyxa: ya

Wolfie: he said he was doing it on his page is why I asked...didn't even know there WAS a terrain chat

Calyxa: 128 grid, simple/fast gold material..

it'll be ready in a mo'

Susan: that was on a tuesday....

we shoudl have a terrain chat on Thursdays one of these days!

Wolfie: I was working in VB all day on tuesday

Calyxa: a tuesday... a couple weeks ago

Wolfie: I gotta get on a list sometime for the events

Susan: hmmm.. I send out email regularly about them...

go to the BryceTalk site.. look under manage your accoutn

Calyxa: some of us checked that box "do not notify me of events"...

desdanova: Wolfie, the chat in on Euro time...

Wolfie: ?

desdanova: 11:30 am pst

Susan: and double check that your email address is accurate or if you'd checked the "dont'tell me about it"

you can change either of those things to make sure you're on the list...

Wolfie: yea...I didn't use my email addy when I registered...didn't know where it was going to be used...got enough spam as it is

desdanova: lol

Calyxa: (about to upload the 'just a terrain' version...)

Susan: oh, so that's one of the bogus email addresses that gets bounced back to me each week, eh?

if so, then please, do us both a favor and put your real email address in there.

If you don't like it (I send out 1x per week), you can go back and check the "don't send me"

Wolfie: yea... help@microsoft.com get a LOT of email I bet...heh.

Susan: and I'll no longer send you! : )

Calyxa: http://www.best.com/~calyxa/ pearl/0images/hourglass.jpg

desdanova: what is the resolution of that Caly?

Calyxa: 128

Susan: :D

Wolfie: The first time I ran BT, I didn't know if it shoed that info like Netmeeting or icq or not...

desdanova: did you ever trt to go beyond 1024?

Calyxa: not yet, but I have considered it.

Wolfie: ah...now that is the same object except in terrain mode?

Calyxa: the java stuff I'm writing is painfully slow.

Wolfie: Please...no java...

Calyxa: yes

Susan: Wolfie:

Calyxa: no java, no program.

Susan: http://www.metacreations.com/products/bryce4/talk/manage.cfm

Wolfie: ew...

Member of the NoJava club here.

tnx susan

Calyxa: it's not going to be a craplet...

Susan: k...

Calyxa: it'll be a downloadable stand-alone app.

Susan: I think that, with this I"ll wrap the end of the official BryceTalk Event... : )

Wolfie: MANY people have trouble running java apps...not just me

Susan: talk as long as you want to!

Calyxa: well, I think I can build it standalone on mac, not sure about windows.
