BryceTalk "My Current Project" — July 1, 1999
part 2

AuntiAlias: to those who recently joined us... Welcome! Right now we have a discussion in progress. ... about Clay's scene...http://www.phase2.net/claygraphics/test_page.html

Clay: ,without the lighting and ambience an image will look real flat

AuntiAlias: Tho I'm adding people to the queue if you've got a scene-in-progress you want to discuss!

Clay: to much haze and such can also make an image look flat

dawn: I have a pic I'd like some advice on concerning the use of realistic lighting--

Rodney: ( Clay... really freak 'em out.... POV shot of the butterfly flying through the beam )

AuntiAlias: k, dawn, I'll add you to the queue....

Clay: hehehe

Yojimbo: hehe

Clay: or a pict of Steve floating by LOL!!

MplsOiBoi: haha.

Yojimbo: lol

AuntiAlias: Are we ready to move on..?

poserbryce: i am doing a project with Lise Lebel

Clay: but I guess I'm done, you can see more examples of the use of the fonts at:http://www.phase2.net/claygraphics/brycepg.6.html

poserbryce: to what?

AuntiAlias: here's the queue I got. I know I missed someone... please tell me...

yojimbo, morpheus, sky pilot, , mpls, dawn

oh. ghazelwood, that's who!

Rodney: I believe that was the moi person, Susan...

AuntiAlias: k.. here we go with new queue: yojimbo, morpheus, sky pilot, Rodney, ghazelwood , mpls, dawn

so.. yoijimbo, you ready now??

Yojimbo: yeppers

http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/Vineyard/8209/test_page0.html

it a bit over 700 k and uses QT

just a warning

Yojimbo: well as many of the people here now know...

AuntiAlias: http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/Vineyard/8209/test_page0.html (reposting, now that my faster net connection is up)

Yojimbo: one of the biggest problems I had with this short anim were the stars

hehe

AuntiAlias: tell us what the problem with the stars are, Yojimbo!

Yojimbo: Everything I tried in Bryce couldn't handle a 90 degree pan on the Y axis

Clay: how did you animate all the astroids seperatley Jim?

Reflash: this is where that cable comes in handy :)

Yojimbo: they would turn into large blobs with streaks

MplsOiBoi: Particle system of some sort?

Clay: oops sorry

Yojimbo: hehe

I'll get to that one next Clay

PJF88: I did eventually solve that Yojimbo!

Clay: :-)

that's your voice isn't Jim?

dawn: I can't view the QT movie, all i get is the sound

Yojimbo: After I composited there was a problem with the stars blinking in the compressed movie file

No it's of an album I've got here

off that is

ghazelwood: Nice Image Susan. Where is the music from?

Yojimbo: hmm strange Dawn/Trey

AuntiAlias: This is Yojimbo's image

er.. movie

dawn: trey today

Yojimbo: make sure you have the latest plugin installed

k

Clay: I don't mind the stars blinking Jim I think it makes it a little more believable

Yojimbo: thanks ghazel

hehe

well they're ok now

but before it was really bad

dawn: i have QT 3.0

Clay: ah

Yojimbo: so what I eventually had to do was play with the export functions in the QT4 player

ahhh

that might be why

AuntiAlias: what settings did you use?

Morpheus: yoj the starfield option wouldn't handle the turn! sorry reading a realyy good book

poserbryce: auntie, what are we talking about here?

Morpheus: nope I have QT3 and it works fine

Yojimbo: Well I started with an import of all the image files at the same resoultion

AuntiAlias: If you've just joined us, we're discussing current scenes in progress...

right now Yojimbo's movie is the topic of discussion...

Clay: dang! BRB!

poserbryce: what is the link?

Yojimbo: then I exported to a .mov file using Anim compression and a sharpen setting of 2

AuntiAlias: here's the link: http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/Vineyard/8209/test_page0.html

Yojimbo: Then I rexported that Using Sorenson and no extra filters

MplsOiBoi: Are these versions of QT available on the web?

Yojimbo: Yes

AuntiAlias: www.apple.com/quicktime/

Yojimbo: bingo

AuntiAlias: plus

ghazelwood: Just checked out some of your images. Jim, they are great.

AuntiAlias: QuickTIme 3 ships with Bryce...

so you all HAVE that!

Yojimbo: The Music is 4:1 compression

Thanks Ghazel

MplsOiBoi: That will allow conversion of AVI files?

AuntiAlias: and should be able to see this movie with that compression...

Yojimbo: hmmm

AuntiAlias: yes, QuickTime is a veritable canopener of goodies for media types

Yojimbo: There's a converter for AVI files available yes

MplsOiBoi: Cool.

Yojimbo: but I don't know if the player itself will do the conversion

Rodney: (The Dreaded Puntmonster strikes again...)

AuntiAlias: If you ahve QuickTime Pro you can do the converting.....

Yojimbo: Right

AuntiAlias: QuickTime itself is good for playback and viewing...

Yojimbo: that's true

W/B Rod

MplsOiBoi: So, there was an awful lot of post production involved before the final product, eh?

AuntiAlias: definitely worth the $29.95 for this kind of stuff.

(QT Pro, that is)

MplsOiBoi: QT Pro, is that freeware/shareware?

Oh.. ok.

Yojimbo: Upgrade

AuntiAlias: that link at apple tells all... :D

Yojimbo: right

AuntiAlias: Yojimbo, having done what you've done, is there anything you know NOW that you wish you'd known at the outset of this movie?

Yojimbo: so Moving on to the asteroid movement

Oh you betcha!

I'll definitely cover that too

AuntiAlias: k : )

Yojimbo: ;)

So to answer Clay's question I started out with a single asteroid

MplsOiBoi: A lonely asteroid.

Yojimbo: I multirepped it about 150 times

then I duplicated the main asteroid again and multirepped another 150 times

getting about 300 diferent sized asteroids

MplsOiBoi: Wow.

Yojimbo: but still the same form

looking back I should have introduced more random rocks

but this effect worked for the moment

MplsOiBoi: I'm wondering how many roids are actually visible in the movie, did you need that many?

Yojimbo: So now I've got 300 rocks floating around

about 280 are visible

MplsOiBoi: Ok.

Yojimbo: so no

but in the end I will

MplsOiBoi: K.

Yojimbo: If I continue on with it ;)

Yojimbo: so I use the Randomize tool to disperse them a bit

and place them in a generally straight line

Yojimbo: simulating a 3 dimensional layer

w/b Rod

Rodney: snarl... hiss hiss

Yojimbo: ; )

Susan: <---is continuing to "host" under this name. Net connection gave out on other machine : /

Yojimbo: ouch

Yojimbo: to move the rocks independently I did the following

w/b des

Select the end point of the anim using the slider control

desdanova: memory prob. thanks

Yojimbo: (Scrubber I think it's called)

Yojimbo: grabbed all the rocks

Rodney: .

Yojimbo: and drug them where I wanted them the direction I wanted them to go

Susan: For those of you who've joined us recently, we're discussing current projects. Right now Yojimbo's project has the floor. : )

Yojimbo: Hit the randomize to change their direction etc.

and gave them some spin

Clay: well that's slick!

desdanova: hmmm

Susan: So each one takes a random direction by the end point, eh?

Yojimbo: then I went through and picked similar sized rocks and moved them at different rates

Clay: ah

Yojimbo: trying to simulate mass and velocity

bigger moved slower etc

Yojimbo: The camera pan was tricky too

but I won't bore you with it

Susan: k : )

desdanova: Jim , did you point the camera manually or did you track a traget?

MplsOiBoi: Yojibo, the planet rings... how'd ya do 'em... ?

Yojimbo: So what would I have liked to know prior to this

..

Susan: we've got lots more to cover, we've discussed two projects and have taken an hour..... so after these questions are answered, let's move on! : )

Yojimbo: I did the camera manually

but used a tracked object as a reference for the angles

Oi there's a tut at Bryce Master's site that explains the technique

go to http://www.geocities.com/NapaValley/Vineyard/8209/test_page3.html

MplsOiBoi: Ok... thanks.

Yojimbo: for a link

Susan: (those of you in the queue... a good idea would be to get a separate text window open and compose a bit about the project that you want to tell us about.. copy n paste when it's your turn... that'll help us cover more ground!)

screwhead.com: Yojimbo, just wanted to let you know that I added your animation to the Bryce Animation Theater. You can view the link description directly at http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Cafe/3246/awtfs.html let me know if you need anything changed. Bye!

Yojimbo: I'll finish up with there's so much I would have liked to know prior to doing this, but I'd like to learn what you all are doing so I can learn more

Susan: : )

Yojimbo: Great thanks screwhead

Yojimbo: done

Calyxa: did I miss all the fun?

Susan: Okay.. just to reiterate the queue:

MplsOiBoi: Good stuff, Jim.

Susan: morpheus, sky pilot, Rodney, ghazelwood , mpls, dawn

Yojimbo: danke viel mass

Susan: those of you who recently arrived... we're going through n talking about my current project.. letting each person have the floor for a bit

with questions/things learned/stuck places, etc...

Morpheus, you're next.. those who are coming afterwards, do compose text in a side window.. think that'll help us speed along...

Morpheus: God I wish I hadn't followed that... Okay http://www.mindspring.com/~kdaw/bryce%20page/portal.JPG well Mine is similar to Clay's in that I don't quite know where I'm going with it but more specificly I don't know where to set it.

Susan: so Morpheus.. go for it! : )

Morpheus: you can faintly see the lighting effect I'm going for on the walls

Susan: tell us where you know you're going, then,... first, Morpheus : )

Morpheus: trying to get this too look like a secret military project

right now it's in one of the buck balls in the preset models

Yojimbo: I have a few suggestions when you're ready:)

Morpheus: and willing yoj

Yojimbo: hehe

Yojimbo: well ... You want it too look like something that is likely to be done today or the near future right?

ghazelwood: Sorry, Susan, but I have a work in progress in photoshop for a client tomorrow and my 4 year old wants a story,:)Night all.

Wolfie: What's the topic of the eve?

MplsOiBoi: Night.

Morpheus: right

Susan: Topic is MY current project

Morpheus: one of the major problems so far

Susan: Right now Morpheus has the floor

url: http://www.mindspring.com/~kdaw/bryce%20page/portal.JPG

Yojimbo: well first off it's hard to tell that it's elevated and you might want to consider just putting the thing on the ground

Wolfie: Just what people are workin on?

Yojimbo: and use a metal texture for the structure supporting the energy well

Susan: Yes: current project: roadblocks and breakthroughs, help asked for and offered... : )

Yojimbo: I like the effect you're going for on the walls

mut you need more frequency to make the proportions obvious

Susan: We have a queue of projects being discussed...sky pilot, Rodney , mpls, dawn ... if you want to be added to queue, let me know!

Morpheus: right frequency added

Yojimbo: Oh and put the camera at eye level

that wil help too

looks good though

dawn: go ahead and scratch me from the queue, aunti...

Susan: k, dawn... : )

Morpheus: any suggestions on how to set up a structure to put it in

the buck ball is a little bit to ummmmmmmmmmmm

Susan: I've got a coupla suggestions, Morpheus!

Morpheus: kewl

Susan: not necessairly on the order that you're asking for...

Morpheus: fine with me

Susan: but this is just to help see it better...

My eye goes first to the yellow spots and to the blue sphere...

Morpheus: another problem sure

Susan: hard at this point to make out the center of attention...

Morpheus: right

Susan: there's that BLACK BLACK and then there's the gray.... don't quite follow what's going on there..

what is the surface you're going for?

One word of advice on material settings...

this is a universal one FOR EVERYONE! : )

Wolfie: !projedt

Susan: on your settings, unless you want the object to be glowing or self illuminating...

Wolfie: ?poser2bryce

Yojimbo: hehe

Susan: make your settings for Ambience (illumination) to be identical

for all the object in your scene

Susan: that way the "fit" with one another

Morpheus: sorry don't know what happened

Susan: and you don't have some items that "resist" the shadows of neighboring objects....

PJF88: preferably set to zero! lol

Susan: er...

not necessarily zero, PJF...

tho I like mine to be a little lower than B4s default of 19 whatever

like around 10-15

but.. whatever they are, make sure that they're the SAME!

PJF88: I'm an extremist, ok? I don't like ambient materials.

poserbryce: an old animation: http://poserbryce.virtualave.net/mars4.mov

what dya think?

Susan: poserbryce, I'll add you to the queue....

right now Morpheus has the floor

oh, and I added Wolfie to the queue, too!

poserbryce: queue of what?

Susan: those of you who recently arrived... we're going through n talking about my current project.. letting each person have the floor for a bit

with questions/things learned/stuck places, etc...

the queue is whose project has the floor, poserbryce...

so.. current queue lineup:

sky pilot, Rodney, ghazelwood , mpls, Wolfie, poserbryce

Morpheus, anything else you want to say or ask?

Morpheus: ummmm that thing about the setting and ummmmmmmm well not really beyond that

Susan: sounded like you were wanting suggestions to know how to model/build something for the structure to go into....

Morpheus: right

Susan: anyone have any offerings on that?

Morpheus: by the by Clay still awake

Susan: well, I"m not hearing a lot of clamor of ideas, here, Morpheus.. so...

I think it's time to move on a bit....

Morpheus: yeah I'll figure out something
