BryceTalk "My Current Project" — July 1, 1999

AuntiAlias: just waiting for a bit for 7 oclock to roll around

Yojimbo: Got your toothpicks handy?

M'Kell: *going silent now*

Jeffric: hi Peter

Yojimbo: PJ!

Clay: (lurking now)

Morpheus: poke me with a stick next time someone posts a URL ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

AuntiAlias: Ding Dong top of the hour!!!

Clay: ROD!

Yojimbo: ROD!

PJF88: howdy

Rodney: Howdy, Y'all

Yojimbo: Zipping up then

AuntiAlias: Welcome to My Bryce Project night in BryceTalk! :D

M'Kell: Hello Rodney

AuntiAlias: Tonight we'll talk about our current Bryce Projects.

This is more or less how we'll be proceeding when we get underway:

Give us a URL to it, if you've got one...

Tell us what you've been learning, where you have been stuck.. breakthroughs, questions, and the like.. and we'll help you get unstuck or bask in your newfound knowledge!

and...

This event is being logged, and the log will be posted... so if there's anything about your proejct that you don't want the world at know about (secret development, etc.) then.. well you've been warned! : )

So... to start off...

how many people here have a current project that you're prepared to talk about with the rest of us?

Yojimbo: check!

AuntiAlias: show of hands, i.e., <--I do!

Morpheus: if anyone's project is caught or killed metacreations will deny any knowledge of these events

Clay: check!

Morpheus: oh and check!

Yojimbo: check! = <- I do

Clay: (ditto)

AuntiAlias: how many people here have a current project that you're prepared to talk about with the rest of us?

...just trying to get a show of hands so we can pace things well.....

Anyone else?

Yojimbo: ouch only 3?

PJF88: tumbleweeds..

Clay: chirp...chirp....

AuntiAlias: okay, we've got three projects that people are willing to talk about?

PJF88: worth talking about? lol

Jeffric: I got one but I only started it about 20 minutes ago !!!

Yojimbo: hehe Good enough ;)

AuntiAlias: let's see.. I have a project that I just finished...

: )

<---i do!

Yojimbo: Yay!

Morpheus: I don't know if mines really good people just put your worst foot forward and trip into the spotlight

PJF88: I've got this amazing 'phone model, Jeff...

Sky Pilot: me

Jeffric: ROFL PJF!!

Yojimbo: ?

Morpheus: think that was a thick enogh metaphor

Reflash has just entered.

Wintermute is off to render mirrored spheres.

M'Kell has just left.

Reflash: well im here anyway

Petrov: How about some tips on realism?

Morpheus: post the project you need realism on and we'll help petrov

:)

Yojimbo: Susan?

Morpheus: SUSAN DON'T GO TO THE LIGHT!!!!!!

PJF88: lol

Morpheus: boy she really is out of it she should have shhhed me by now

AuntiAlias disappears in a blinding flash of smoke.

Morpheus: uh-oh

Rodney: Sorry.. was away from keyboard.. i can talk about Infinity's Child but I'd think everybody was bored with it by now

AuntiAlias: oh boy! connection problems are so much fun!

arrgh!

Morpheus: haha

Yojimbo: Not a bit Rod

AuntiAlias: would someone please do a save of the log....

PJF88: Thought we'd upset you...

Yojimbo: love to hear more

AuntiAlias: using option/alt on while clicking the disk icon

and send it to me to catch what I have missed?

Yojimbo: done

AuntiAlias: susank@metacreations.com

thanks

Rodney: All you missed wasa my comment:

quickdraw: I downloaded some object that I found that I wanted to import into Bryce, but they were in .OBP format.... Does anyone know what .OBP is?

Rodney: Sorry.. was away from keyboard.. i can talk about Infinity's Child but I'd think everybody was bored with it by now

Morpheus: oh and me beeging you not to go to the light

AuntiAlias: let's take it this way....

we'll give each person a change to discuss your project a bit.,.

and for that duration.. your project has the floor...

don't know if protocol is necessary when it comes to the time of saying, "how do I do...?"

i.e., whoever's got ideas, go ahead and shout 'em out

but... only when person who's got the floor asks a question...

fair enough?

Clay: check!

AuntiAlias: So... to reiterate the queue:

Morpheus: kay

finderic: bye

AuntiAlias: Yojimbo piped up first...

AuntiAlias: If you have a web site url, please do give it!

so, after Yojimbo, then Clay, Morpheus, Sky Pilot...

So...

Yojimbo, GO FOT IT!

er

GO FOR IT!

Yojimbo: I'll give Clay the floor first off

I need to upload

AuntiAlias: okay..

Clay: I'm on the phone go ahead LOL!!

Yojimbo: lol

Clay: sorry

Yojimbo: umm Morph you go?

AuntiAlias: All right.. of those whom I listed, who's ready to go?

Yojimbo: lol

2 mins

Clay: ok done now

Morpheus: uhhhh me I guess

Clay: http://www.phase2.net/claygraphics/test_page.html

AuntiAlias: welcome back, Sky Pilot. you're in the queue to share...

Sky Pilot: fifth time I lost my connection today!

AuntiAlias: Welcome newcomers...

Right now Clay is sharing his project with us....

Clay: I started this just before the event tonight:-)

AuntiAlias: http://www.phase2.net/claygraphics/test_page.html

Morpheus: like it clay

Clay: I have no idea where I'm going withit

but It's a start

AuntiAlias: What inspired you to do it? Problem you're trying to solve with it?

Clay: no, I just thought I needed a lighthouse in the collection:-)

Yojimbo: LOL

Clay: honestly

Yojimbo: looks pretty cool too

AuntiAlias: I like the range of color you have in the background atmosphere and sky.....

Clay: I just felt compelled to do a lighthouse

thanks Susan

Yojimbo: so how about explaining what's in it so far

AuntiAlias: Do you want suggestions? (since you say you don't know where you're going with it.....)

Morpheus: the orange glass seems a bit off to me just so i can say something

Morpheus: oh and ever concider making it a night scene?

Clay: Sure ideas are welcome

(yes Morph)

AuntiAlias: I think both Yoj's and Morph's suggestions are good ones... how about you start off with an explanation of what's there so far...

Clay: ok

Petrov: what's the rest of the structure like?

Clay: the building itself is built from Fonts...

Yojimbo: You could make it dark and have a light shinning out

opps jumped the gun on that one

Clay: "symbol" fonts

Morpheus: ???????

Clay: converted to greyscales in photoshop then on to Bryce as lattices

AuntiAlias: symbol fonts..? tell us more! : )

Yojimbo: Really?

Morpheus: ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I bow to you oh great one

Clay: then tweaked with filters in Bryce to smooth them out more

Clay: after a few trials and errors, I made the keen little Rust texture

ghazelwood: Hi everyone!

Clay: hi

Clay: then after peicing some of them together things started to take shape

AuntiAlias: greets.. we have the discussion in progress.. CLay has an image (please repost url) and we are discussing it...

Clay: http://www.phase2.net/claygraphics/test_page.html

AuntiAlias: Clay: the pattern that is on the glass, like a frame... tell us about that, too....

Clay: this is just one of 4 that I've done with fonts

it a mat from Bryced tweaked way out......

I can't even remember all the steps I went through on that one....

but I'll e-mail to anyone who wants it:-)

AuntiAlias: Can I guess?

Clay: sure

lemme fire up Bryce tooo...

AuntiAlias: It's a material that has a pretty regular geometric grid-like structure... and it involves transparency, of course...

Morpheus: actually clay later on can i have that rust texture would be helpful on my project

well might be

Clay: right Susan

AuntiAlias: seems to me that you distorted it using Phase, and maybe used 3D Sine as the source of the distortion

to get those little half-circles....

AuntiAlias: that's just my guess from looking at it.... ; )

ymmv

Morpheus: okay now I bow to both of you

Clay: it is basic grid...

(component 1)

Rodney: As long as you're sending Morpheus that texture, Clay, why don't you just forward me a copy of your hard drive. And any backups of previous work, of course...

Yojimbo: lol

Morpheus: hahaha

Yojimbo: me too while you're at it ;)

AuntiAlias: Rodney, you never ask for things by halves, do you? ; )

Clay: Linear sine on component2

LOL Rod

Morpheus: rodney he won't give it right away need to wait untill he's the right combo of drunk and tired

Rodney: Of course I do. Just both halves at one time...

Clay: LOL

AuntiAlias: any phase?

JeffP: Clay: Just post everything to your web site...

Clay: no

AuntiAlias: oh well!

Clay: no phase at all in any component:-)

AuntiAlias: nor combination?

Morpheus: hahaha like I said wait untill he's drunk focus people

Clay: nope

AuntiAlias: Anything else you want to tell us about this? the Orange Glass, for instance?

Clay: I'm changing the orange glass back to clear......

Reflash: why??

Clay: I was using it to scope some things.....

Clay: the inside will be a volumetric light

Morpheus: oh okay good no offense but it's throghing off the look

Clay: cylinder

I need to see all of the little dtails without the long render time

AuntiAlias: Welcome! Right now we have a discussion in progress. ... about Clay's scene...http://www.phase2.net/claygraphics/test_page.html

Clay: so go with a colored glass:-)

Yojimbo: Good tip

Clay: then the last thing will be to add that volume and render it out

there are about 5 cylinders within eachother for the body of the tower

MplsOiBoi: All done in Bryce??

Clay: using various glass and metal

Clay: yep except for the greyscales

AuntiAlias: So... were you looking for input for what to do further with it, Clay? : )

ghazelwood: I've imported rippled glass textures from photoshop into Bryce 2 thru 4to create the image for Jennifer Alspachs book.

Clay: sure any suggestions would be cool, and yes it will be a night with a volume light shining out:-)

MplsOiBoi: Neat.

Clay: (and some terrains added too)

Morpheus: well clay as we seem to think alike I have no more suggestions well that and i have nothing more to say

Clay: :-)

AuntiAlias: ghazelwood, we're taking each person at a time

I've got a queue going at the moment....

I'll happily add you to it...

Clay: I will do a few various views too

MplsOiBoi: jot me up on there, Susan. :)

AuntiAlias: unless your comment re: rippled glass is one that you want to share as possible way to do the glass on Clay's lighthouse.... : )

k, will do, Mpls!

Oh! I have a suggestion!

Clay: :-)

AuntiAlias: right now the image looks like a construction in progress...

Clay: yes

AuntiAlias: hence the fairly standard window size...

Clay: yes

AuntiAlias: and the smack-dab in the middle composition....

Clay: yep

AuntiAlias: but.. when you get closer to the end, I think that this could be really dramatic as a vertically oriented "portrait" layout composition

Morpheus: don't bother clay uh-huh

AuntiAlias: with the lighthouse offset from center...

to add drama...

Clay: I agree susan

AuntiAlias: you prolly have that all covered anyhow, but I just thought it was worth mentioning! : )

Clay: ( I typed that earlier heeh)

but you're totally right:-)

AuntiAlias: did you? heh.. that's what I get for composing my mid-chat announcement in another window!

MplsOiBoi: Perhaps, Clay, it might also look good composed as Susan said but also from I slightly higher vantage point, looking down more on the structure.

AuntiAlias: public embarassment! :D

poserbryce: hi

Clay: my suggestion to others is that you set up some good lighting
