BryceTalk Camera Discussion, June 29, 1999AuntiAlias: Welcome to Bryce Camera discussion, everyone!! MtnCub: . Jester: Thanks.... Journeyman: what is this? KPT Joseph: hi, glad to finally make it into one of these Jester: This is my first also KPT AuntiAlias: There's no real set agenda for this, other than the fact that "Bryce Camera" was one of the requested topics... KPT Joseph: won't be able to participate much; getting ready for a big trip tomorrow. But glad to be on board for once! MtnCub: ditto. Lise: *-) fargo: So hi all :-) Rosy: hello to YOU Fargo! Journeyman: Susan did you see what I said about monday night? MtnCub: *curls up in a giant beanchair and watches. AuntiAlias: So.... how about if we start by making a list of everyone's "What I'd like to know more about the Bryce Camera" KathG: Hi All :) AuntiAlias: and then....we can let that drive our discussion Rosy: hi Kath! sounds good Auntie AuntiAlias: So.. for the moment, it's a free-for-all for you to say "Here's what I'd like to know more about Bryce Camera" Morpheus: hello MtnCub: What < I > would like to know... about camera's.. is the best way to attach a camera to a PATH and send it on it's journey thru a site. AuntiAlias: (Journeyman, check the lobby, I said something to you there) Rosy: I'd like to know more about Camera View vs Director View AuntiAlias: ::::copying and pasting the list o' requests as they show up in da window:::: KathG: An explanation of the Camera attributes would be nice AuntiAlias: Keep 'em coming! : ) Journeyman: ok MtnCub: *eyes KathG* AuntiAlias: <--wants to tell a good tip for *aiming* the camera KathG: Hi Mtncub AuntiAlias: Any more requests? these four will take the whole time, I'm sure... but I'd like to get any more ideas/requests.... MtnCub: Hello : ) AuntiAlias: All right then... MtnCub: Kath..do forgive me for staring..you reminded me of someone. DigiVI: I just got here what were the ideas? Rosy: LOL! AuntiAlias: Oh, what we're doing is this... KathG: Who do I remind you fo :) AuntiAlias: for our discussion about cameras, we're all throwing out "What I'd like to know more about" requests... KathG: OF :) MtnCub: KathG.. hehe..a hacker that attempted to take over an IRC channel yesterday.. with the same nickname ;) MtnCub: BearTrap SIR : ) DigiVI: oh AuntiAlias: and tho this is kinda loose for protocol, it would prolly be good to cut the side chjatter a bit KathG: Definately not me....:) AuntiAlias: we will go into more of a moderated type of discussion in a bit... MtnCub: Yes Mam Aunti. KathG: This is my real name :0 MtnCub: Kath..cool :) DigiVI: well how about how to keep long smooth animations with a even velocity? KathG: or should I say slightly shortened AuntiAlias: If you want to have side discussions or flirtations, check out the menu option for "new room" and go start a new one and flirt/discuss stuff to your hearts' content there! : ) MtnCub: Ooo.. good idea ;) AuntiAlias: So... the suggestions we have so far... Jester: lol KathG: sorry MtnCub: *eyeballs BearTrap and considers getting a room..err.. making a room* Kidding *chuckle* LOL AuntiAlias: Just in case you didn't know... these discussion are logged and the logs are posted on the MetaCreations site so now you'll *really* want to take the side discussions into a side room! :D Rosy: LOL AuntiAlias: So... Jester: you go girl....LOL AuntiAlias: as I was trying to say.... Our CAMERA suggestions thus far.... Camera Attributes Camera/Director's View AuntiAlias: Camera on a Path for animation and a good camera aiming tip So before we begin, any others besides those? (heh! that seems to cover things quite a bit!!) DigiVI: how about how to have smooth long animation, like a really activly moving camera at even velocity... this is hard to achieve and I would like to hear some ideas on how to do this AuntiAlias: (that is same as camera on path for animation.... good one!) DigiVI: oh... KathG: Is linking the sun to the view anything to do with the camera ? MtnCub: KathG..nope. not really anyway. AuntiAlias: Well, no and yes... AuntiAlias: So.. how about we start with Camera versus Director Rosy: :-) KathG: :) AuntiAlias: How many people here used Bryce 2 or earlier? DigiVI: :() KathG: no Rosy: not me Annon69: yes |

JeffP: . PJF88: y Beartrap: y DigiVI: zip AuntiAlias: some of each... : ) Lise: y AuntiAlias: Back in the days before Bryce animated (Bryce 3D), there was a camera that didn't have to move... fargo: OK, I'd like to know what made it necessary to make Camera view AND Director's view. It is sometimes confusing... AuntiAlias: sure, you could move it to another place, but the camera was a STILL camera, no animations KPT Joseph: fargo - so you can watch your camera animate AuntiAlias: fargo, this explanation'll get to that... fargo: thnx AuntiAlias: Then, for Bryce 3D the camera was made to move.. to fly through scenes and so forth and.. to be able to track certain objects.... so... two things were necessary... one was to still be able to see your scene in a 3D view (not orthogonal, i.e., side, top, front,, back) and to be able to see the camera AS AN OBJECT since the camera object can now move on a trajectory of its own... MtnCub: Oh.. so you can move the scene AND move the camera at the same time then ? AuntiAlias: hang on, Mtn.. I'm on a train o thought.. will complete it before entertaining add'l questons AuntiAlias: The other thing was this -- the old version of Bryce's camera had a trackball control.. in other words... the camera would TRACK certain objects... world center (by default) or the selected object i.e., it would rotate around those objects Once you have a camera that has the ability to track any object.. and continue tracking that object over time... what do you do about the trackball control? "you" is sorta hypothetical.. meaning you as a Bryce developer ; ) AuntiAlias: So... these two needs: to see your scene in 3D view.. and to retain the "old" style of trackball mode... AuntiAlias: especially for very vocal and insistent Bryce users who got used to that way of working..... ; ) so.. thsoe things became The Director's View Rosy: Ah AuntiAlias: And the new camera controls became The Camera View! MtnCub: ooh AuntiAlias: The way I like to think of working (and this is from habits formed back from Bryce 1 days, granted) is to use the Director's View to make the scene Jester: Kewl AuntiAlias: (I like the trackball mode, I really do) Rosy: me too AuntiAlias: If you've never gotten used to it, you may not be as hooked onit However, when you go to top view... and try to position objects in relation to your camera all you see is the camera obejct... and NO representation of the Director's Veiw er View AuntiAlias: So.. that's where I like to use "Camera to Director" command... to place the Camera Object where the Director's View is by the way.... for those two menu items Camera to Director and Director to Camera which are... well.... confusing, yes? Rosy: yes AuntiAlias: I think of it this way fargo: no AuntiAlias: move the CAMERA TO where the DIRECTOR is currently positioned or move the DIRECTOR to where the CAMERA is currently positioned also depending on which view you are in... the order that those items are listed is reversed (aiyee!) but... they tend to be the same, subjectively..... that is, the top option is always: Move my current perspective over to the other one's position the bottom one always is: move the other perspective so that it joins me where I am right now . So.... if you have any other questions or ocmmetns on Camera and Director, please type ? or ! Rosy: ? AuntiAlias: Rosy? Rosy: Since Director's View offer more rotation, I use it to position and then convert it to camera like you said! Is that OK? AuntiAlias: If it works, it works! :D So.. a resounding YES, Rosy! :D Rosy: yeah! thanx for the explanation! ga/ AuntiAlias: k... Camera Attributes... who was it that asked about this? KathG: Me :) AuntiAlias: You want to know ALL or ANY in particular? KathG: All would be nice :0 AuntiAlias: lol... KathG: :) AuntiAlias: Was just looking at them... unfortuantely, you can't be in the Camera attrivutes dialog box and have bryce talk open at the same time... so.. hang on while I take a screen shot and open up screen shot in Pictur Viewer KathG: okay :0 :)
