Tuesday BryceTalk —Terrain Mania! June 22, 1999
part 5

AuntiAlias: Sky Pilot! you're on!

gdmsynth: Paint the "erode" tool? I know I can paint "erosion" Hmmm, just wondering.

Sky Pilot: Will the "gaps" problem, when tiling, be fixed with 4.1 patch?

Ideaman: I just did some Egyptian Columns with personalized heirglyphs and the were taking way too long to render. Any ideas on what I was doing wrong?

AuntiAlias: I don't know the answer to that question...

gdmsynth: I'll just give it a whirl. Thanks all.

Sky Pilot: Thought someone here might know.

Ideaman: Hey Susan Kitchens. How are you?

AuntiAlias: Ideaman, is this a terrain question? We're in the middle of a -- oh, looking at time0-- getting toward the end of a terrain discussion

MetaKlaus: The space trick also runs for painting Erode!

Rosy: yeah I do see gaps

ccasady: the problem with Erroding a 1024 Terrain is..... you can't see the errosion!

DaleP: Gaps problem was my question too

dwalter: which fractal mode has hieroglyphs in it???

PJF88: lol

AuntiAlias: Chirs, you got any workarounds for gaps?

er Chris

Calyxa: option-nudge.

ccasady: I stole the pictographs from the Chumash Indians.

gdmsynth: That's what I thought! I was waiting a long time but I couldn't see anything in 1024!

boru: B-caulk

dwalter: :)

ccasady: gaps??? It's a problem.

Sky Pilot: Duh!

ccasady: go to top view and get VERY VERY close and nudge them together.

AuntiAlias: (gdmsynth, also try using realtime viewing so you can see the 3D preview.. mebbe you'll see more erosion detail there, as well....)

ccasady: That's about all you can do.,

Sky Pilot: Know that. Is a fix coming?

RabbleRouser: B caulk! LOL!

gdmsynth: (Hmmm what do you mean realtime viewing?)

AuntiAlias: Sky, I don't know the answer to that question.

boru: : )

MetaKlaus: You can see the erode tool in 1024!

Sky Pilot: Thanks, Auntie!

ccasady: good piont Aunti/Klaus: Real Time linking is useful

RabbleRouser: hey, kids i gotta scoot.. thanks for the sesh!

MetaKlaus: Just use the zoom tool agaian and zoom in pretty near!

PJF88: realtime viewing = solid shaded preview?

DaleP: How about holding down Ctrl key when genning a terrain?

mmurphy: (love that zoom tool)

AuntiAlias: SkyPilot, just asked John what he thought about that (being fixed) and he says, "dont think that it is"

gdmsynth: Zoom and then hit cancel? Zoom for just viewing?

RabbleRouser: bye all!

MetaKlaus: Zoom just for viewing!

Uncheck Zoom after you're done!

gdmsynth: Great!

boru: See ya Kenn

AuntiAlias: Also, there was a comment that keef wanted to make!

keef: Accidently pressed Crtl T (PC) in the Terrain Editor - the effect is not in the manual !!

AuntiAlias: what happened?

ccasady: (what's the efect?)

keef: colour preview

nacho: a

boru: gasp!

Rosy: cool

AuntiAlias: that may be a windows only thing. neither control nor command T nets anything in my version of Bryce

keef: takes a few seconds

boru: No, it works on my Mac!

DaleP: Seems to gen a better Terrain at 1024

MetaKlaus: wow! That NEW for me!

mmurphy: Hey! it IS color!! cool!

Calyxa: I get no color preview.

boru: command T, Caly

geosteve: Thanks for all the cool terrain tips. My first time with Bryce Talk, so excuse my initial interruption. I'm off to use Bryce to teach geology!

keef: so who's going to rewrite the manual ???

Calyxa: in the terrain editor?

MetaKlaus: there are some more in the TE: cmd+s (smooth) +e (equalize), +i (invert)

Androo...: Ctrl T crashed me :-(

boru: yes, Caly

Calyxa: no joy

ctaylor: thanks a lot, I have learned a lot, take care

ccasady: ! ... about real time linking

mmurphy: (command-t on Mac)

boru: brb

DaleP: Page 182 of B4 manual mentions Ctrl clicking on Fractal terrain for more detail

Calyxa: yes, I tried, but the preview remained greyscale 'til I picked a different gradient.

ccasady: I can't get Comand T to do anything, in the terrain editor?

MetaKlaus: yes! It brings the texture in!

Rosy: takes a few seconds

MetaKlaus: at the 3D preview!

AuntiAlias: oh, the assigned texture?

do you ahve to keep the key command held down?

mmurphy: command-t gives me the actual terrain texture. WOW

DaleP: Res must be>than 512

mmurphy: ...I mean material!

ccasady: Oh, it's Command, not Control

mmurphy: and it stays there while I edit the terrain!

MetaKlaus: Yes, exactly the assigned material!

Rosy: I clicked on the 3D model first to make CTRTL + T work

MetaKlaus: That's too coool

ccasady: That's wonderful!

these guys are getting so clever

mmurphy: sweet merciful crap, that's cool!

ccasady: well put

Androo...: hooray it worked :-)

AuntiAlias: procedural material or picture material? (I still can't get it to work!)

MetaKlaus: If I show this at the newt trade show, the fans will got crazy!

procedural

CBXTX: OżO

Calyxa: not working for me either, Susan

Rosy: click on the 3d thing Auntie first? :-)

ccasady: it's a procedural texture assigned in the 3D preview!

Betty: me either

mmurphy: IT WORKS WITH PICT IMAGES TOO!

PJF88: Not working for me:-(

ccasady: ...of the TE!

Calyxa: I tried that Rosy.

ccasady: yoiu have to wait a bit.

MetaKlaus: Picture material also works

Calyxa: been waiting a while now...

Journeyman: (feels as if he is missing something important)

Rosy: few seconds

boru: Doesn't take that long.

ccasady: wow, paint that with real Time Linking on!

see the texture move with it!

boru: Snazzy!

MetaKlaus: you gotta love these guys! They really kick ass

Yojimbo: one sec Caly I'll see if I can get it to work

PJF88: Maybe it's a colour depth thing. This laptop is fairly low.

boru: Caly, what's the resolution on your terrain?

Androo...: I can't get that ctrl T to work everytime :-(

AuntiAlias: Yeah, Iseemed to get more progress with a lower res terrain than a higher res terrain....

Journeyman: arghh, someone please explain in the front room

Calyxa: I've tried a low res and a hi res, neither worked (64, 512)

Rosy: try 128

Yojimbo: Ok got it

select the terrain hit the E button

Androo...: ahhhh... mine only goes on 128

AuntiAlias: Well, that's a fun surprise!! Thanks, keef!!!

Yojimbo: then cntrl-t in the terrain editor

it takes approx 20 seconds to load it

AuntiAlias: if Windows, or Command-T

Yojimbo: about 10 actually

Betty: bingo!

AuntiAlias: : )

keef: maybe next time THEY can put it in the manual

MetaKlaus: Keef, can you explain how you stumble about stuff that all the great gurus don't know?? Congrats! You make us feel like some greens ;-))

Betty: 128

Yojimbo: oh yeah sorry Aunti

that's Command -T

Neat trick

PJF88: That's it 128!

Sky Pilot: Humbling, but so cool!

boru: Susan, if they put it all in the manual, you couldn't sell your great books!

Androo...: well this has been great :-) Thanx

mmurphy: only works with 128 on my machine, but very cool none the less!

Betty: concur with all aforementioned opinions--all of 'em!

Androo...: got to fly

AuntiAlias: Got it! cool!!!

Yojimbo: Yep 128 is the only one it seems to work with

ccasady: yea, only 128 it seems

AuntiAlias: well, that's okay.... ; )

ccasady: I wonder why that is?

AuntiAlias: No idea..

Rosy: default?

ccasady: betteer than nothing

MetaKlaus: Probably just a quick check...

of engineering

AuntiAlias: You know, we have been going at this for over two hours now!! I guess there is LOTS in the Terrain Editor and workign with Terrains that is so fascinating!!!

Would you be interested in having an event like this again (on terrains)?

Rosy: yes!

MetaKlaus: Brian and Ales claim that there are more feature undocumented than documented in Bryce!

Yojimbo: YES!

DaleP: sure!

Yojimbo: since I missed it

boru: Ach, ja!

Yojimbo: ; )

Sky Pilot: You bet!

JeffP: Count me in...

AuntiAlias: Also.... what other topics would you like to see?

Rosy: exporting terrains

DaleP: DTEditor stuff

MetaKlaus: DTE is crazy...

AuntiAlias: where are you, Rosy? Will you be able to make it to Thursday event? We'll be doing import and export

Yojimbo: lol

mmurphy: lol

AuntiAlias: plus, I just covered DTE in two week series on Thurs nights

Rosy: yes! Virginia, USA

AuntiAlias: I suggest you check out the log

Journeyman: when I hold down control and click and drag on the 3d mountain preview, it stretched it up and down

DaleP: k

AuntiAlias: 10:30 pm your time on Thurs, Rosy!

Rosy: thanks Auntie

ccasady: can I be a spectator next time?

Rosy: all right

thanks

AuntiAlias: http://www.metacreations.com/products/bryce4/talk/logs/061099-1.cfm

Yojimbo: hehe

boru: Hey, aren't you Chris Casady?

AuntiAlias: taht is the log for the DTE

keef: Many thanks Chris - Klaus - AA great fun bye !

DaleP: thanks

AuntiAlias: sure chris! it's nice to spectate once in a while, isnt it?

and.. you've DONE GREAT!

ccasady: huh? yes : )

MetaKlaus: Thanks you for the new trick!!

AuntiAlias: a round of applause for Chris and Klaus!

ccasady: I have a few URLs!

Rosy: hear her!

boru: Clap clap!

AuntiAlias: clap clap clap clap clap!

Rosy: I mean hear hear!!!! ;-)

Sky Pilot: This has been the best yet!

ccasady: Thank you!

DaleP: Object not found

dwalter: clap clap clap

ccasady: http://www.tilenut.com/bryce/rocks/

AuntiAlias: whistle!! wooo hooo!

Rosy: Oh yes! That Object not FOUND

mmurphy: option-click and drag and make the terrain preview HUGE!

Rosy: bad one

Betty: thankyou!

ccasady: http://www.tilenut.com/ojai/tshow.html

PJF88: Susan, like I said, Steve Cox wrote the UVMapper program which is a fantastic tool for OBJ file texturess. I'm sure he'd be useful for the import export.

ccasady: http://www.tilenut.com/yomama/bryce/Galleries/recentwrk.html

Journeyman: and when I hold down alt and move the mouse it zooms in and out from the landscape

PJF88: Thanks yooz guyz.

ccasady: http://www.tilenut.com/Media/Bryceart/fall98art/pompeii.html

http://www.tilenut.com/dem/demart/Cobalava600.jpg

AuntiAlias: Good, PJF.. thanks for the word!!

Calyxa: well, I got it to work... but it froze up on the big file I was working on...

Rosy: Object Not found would be a good topic...not necessarily for just Terrains

Journeyman: how do I get the texture to show up when I click ctrl+t?

AuntiAlias: make sure that terrain is in 128 resolution

AuntiAlias: and has a material applied to it (gray plain one doesn't work so well)

ccasady: did all those URLs work okay for you? I hope you were kidding about the 404

PJF88: lol

Rosy: thanks for the URLs! :-)

DaleP: Yours do... the Bryce Talk logs didn't

AuntiAlias: I wonder if the object not found was referring to Bryce, not your web site!

oh!

sorry

ccasady: good. Ah.

Rosy: LOL

Calyxa: the dreaded object not found bug...

Rosy: yeah bad bug

mmurphy: Okay, gotta go Brycers. Thanks all!

MetaKlaus: Thanks you!"

PJF88: byeeee
