Tuesday BryceTalk —Terrain Mania! June 22, 1999

ccasady: Is this mainly a European crowd?

PJF88: Steve Cox, are you the UVMapper Steve Cox?

Sky Pilot: Sent me DEEPER into the SkyLab. Thanks!

Lise: Cool!

That was the idea. hehe

AuntiAlias: Well,we could check.. where's everyone from?

nacho: lise is the Master of skies

ccasady: What time is it in Germany?

boru: Chris, I'm from Europe

keef: Scotland

Lise: (blushing)

ccasady: I'm from Los Angeles

ctaylor: Oklahoma

AuntiAlias: <<--Los Angeles, CA (11:30 am)

ctaylor: 1:30pm

Beartrap: London

Calyxa: silicon valley, CA

AuntiAlias: it's 8:30 pm in Germany, or as they say, 20.30

Sumo: London

Lise: Quebec (the rebel canadian province)

Sky Pilot: Davenport, Iowa

ctaylor: man, why did I have to move from CA? *missing it*

PJF88: Nottingham.

Jeffric: 'Ull

KathG: Hi Everyone

DaleP: hi

PJF88: lol

Steve Cox: Long Island, NY

Lise: Allo Klaus!

ccasady: Good, London, Scotland, Canada, Iowa....Nottinghan (England?)

MetaKlaus: Hi!

KathG: Darlington

ccasady: and Klause!

MetaKlaus: Munich ;-)

boru: Steve, we're almost neighbors (Jersey City)

PJF88: Is there another one?! ;-)

AuntiAlias: Guten Abend, Klaus!

MetaKlaus: I love Bryce rendering in the background ;-)

AuntiAlias: Nice Nickname, btw

ccasady: Hi Klause, welcome Munich!

Calyxa: background rendering rules.

nacho: hi klause did you read the email finally?

ctaylor: two computers rule :)

MetaKlaus: which one <g>

PJF88: background rendering is dangerous...

ccasady: I'm gonna asign colors to people names....

MetaKlaus: I have never ever crashed with it..

roberto: Hi Klaus... I've to aplogize to you in public...

Lise: Susan, you want me to mind the door while you're here?

MetaKlaus: whatfor?

AuntiAlias: So.. now that both of our guest are here... let's get underway...

ccasady: always makes it easier to rad the chat

PJF88: You're on a Mac Klaus!

nacho: i need the bsmooth for windows!!!!!!

AuntiAlias: thanks, Lise.. yes

Lise: Okey dokey!

AuntiAlias: Welcome to Terrain Mania Tuesday in BryceTalk!!

ccasady: I'm ready

MetaKlaus: Me too.

Steve Cox: (PJF, UVMapper yes... sorry missed that one...)

KathG: HI Susan thank you for the DTE logs......loving going through them and learning alot :)

AuntiAlias: We got two guests... today. Chris Casady and Klaus Busse

AuntiAlias: A tip: Here are some tips to make things easier:

Highlight speakers with different colors to help you track who is saying what.

(the people list allows you to change colors--Upper left side, 2nd Green button)

RabbleRouser: hi all

AuntiAlias: Kenn! Hey!

RabbleRouser: =-)

Calyxa: hiya, Kenn

PJF88: Susan, grab Steve Cox as someone to talk about import/export. He's a clever type!

PJF88: Doh!

AuntiAlias: Oh? cool!

So...

a little bit more about our guests:

Chris Casady (ccasady) has been doing creative things with terrains, and has taught terrain-making techniques last year at the Bryce Retreat @ Ghost Ranch, and this year at BryceCamp in Ojai (which he produced-- yay!!)

Sky Pilot: Hi Rab! Wouldn't be from VA?

roberto: Well Klaus ... I'm that damned guy who asked you a free license to BSmooth promising to publish a review about your shareware in a short time and I made you waiting MONTHS before to get it published (but I got it, finally, last December)

MetaKlaus: >g>

AuntiAlias: Klaus Busse has a great BryceTips web site --good tips and easter eggs there -- and is the author of B-Smooth. And other fun apps. I got to talking to him when he was doing Floppy Lens, a great QTVR helper photoshop

plug in

RabbleRouser: ?

AuntiAlias: He's now working for MetaCreations in the Europe Office

MetaKlaus: <flushing red>

RabbleRouser: Klaus will there be another BSmooth soon?

AuntiAlias: So... how shall we do this?

george: Heh....a pc verions?

MetaKlaus: ok folks, now you know why I'm busy, it's time for me to apologize...

There will be no PC version soon.

AuntiAlias: I know that you both have some terrain tips that you're just dyin' to talk about...: ) chris, klaus, who wants to go first?

ccasady: chaos, anarchy, sounds good to me

MetaKlaus: I've something like a 70 hour week

george: (I have one coming Klaus....don't worry)

Sky Pilot: Hi Rosy!

MetaKlaus: one?

Rosy: Hey all!

george: not bsmooth but something similar....

Rosy: terrains?

MetaKlaus: okay, let's talk terrains...

ccasady: I could rant a bit about Terrains

Rosy: good

MetaKlaus: ok

ccasady: I see too many Bryce images where the author hasn't bothered to sculp the terrain at all.

AuntiAlias: So who wants to rant first? ; )

ccasady: I do

MetaKlaus: y

AuntiAlias: Well, Chris.. you've begun! go for it! (Folks, Chris has the floor!)

george: if your interested let me know Klaus.... george@cd101now.com

ccasady: They just use one of Bryce's generic random mountains.

There are so mnay powerful tools in the Terrain Editor now that there is no excuse anymore for uninteresting terrains!

PJF88: It's an outrage.

Rosy: I agree

ccasady: That's right

RabbleRouser: hate that!

george: True true

ccasady: This is my Rant

Lise: sniff, sniff

AuntiAlias: Preach it, brother!

boru: Hear hear

i_claudius: I'm not gonna take it anymore!

MetaKlaus: lol

ccasady: So I besiege upon you all:

george: It's a bit better tho, when there are a few promitives thrown in for good measure

ccasady: Take the time to sculpt your terrains and make something really unique.

Terrains look good when you've layered up several effects, even several terrains.

PJF88: Like a siege engine?

Rosy: and save your good ones!

ccasady: Yes, you can!

roberto: How many here are used to use terrains for geometrical modeling (instead of fractal-alike) ?

Rosy: as presets, right? :-)

ccasady: You an save terrains in the preset Objects library

yes

MetaKlaus: me at least...

nacho: me roberto

george: Righto roberto

algrbraic actually

ccasady: here's a technical question, for Klause maybe?

RabbleRouser: most BSmooth users do that Roberto

nacho: arquitectural moldures

ccasady: When they are saved, are they saved at full 16 bit resoluition?

MetaKlaus: yes, have a look at www.metacreations.de/temp/tor.jpg

They are.

16 bit is what we have since B3

Quite a revolution

ccasady: Good I thought so, but wanted to confirm that.

Sky Pilot: ?

george: Curious about that 16 bit thing....

roberto: Would be nice to write a tutorial about architectural terrain modeling...or does it exist yet ?

ccasady: Yes, I know 16 bit! It's amazing!

george: What spectrum does it use?

AuntiAlias: uh, for us mere mortals, wha tis the significance of that "16 bit" thing? Klaus? Chris?

MetaKlaus: Do you know what's this 16-bit is about? Let me explain...

george: Allows for...oh. take it away

ccasady: Bryce 1, 2 and 3 had 10 bit. Yes. Please explain.

MetaKlaus: You all know the story of the king who lost his kingdom because he pronised to fill a checkerboard with rice...

roberto: yes

i_claudius: Never heard that one...

ccasady: no

MetaKlaus: first field,: 1 ricecorn, the second one the double amount and soo forth

Calyxa: 1 2 4 8 16 32 64 ...

adds up real quick.

ccasady: ah, I see.

MetaKlaus: he asked the king to fill the checkerboard with rice, each field the double amount...

roberto: the number increase in a way being out of range for the richest king on earth....

MetaKlaus: And that's what we have with the bit depth...

8 bit isn't to much... 256 levels of height...

AuntiAlias: a 16-square checkerboard? ; )

ccasady: Photoshop works in 256 levels of Grey.

george: What I want to know though, is how to take advantage of that 16 bit ability....since no image editing app (save for bryce) supports 16 bit grayscale. Does it use a specific color scheme, like HLS or HSV, or hex, etc.?

PJF88: And we can model this in the terrain editor? Wow.

MetaKlaus: Yep, here we have 16 checkerboard fields...

which makes...

AuntiAlias: ( george, pls hang on a bit ... : ) )

Jeffric: let me get this straight, we use the terrain editor to grow rice to give to a king to play chess with ?

george: (sorry!)

Calyxa: render rice farm?

MetaKlaus: 65535 levels of height!

ccasady: That;'s why the terrains look so darn good. 16 bit.

Rosy: wow!

ccasady: The Terain Editor from Bryce 3D workd in 4096 shades of grey.

RabbleRouser: this is new to Bryce 4?

ccasady: now we have many more times that! Yes.

ctaylor: neat

MetaKlaus: The terrain editor... yes

but the internal format was 16 bit since then...

Rosy: I like the idea of the DEM feature but haven't used it yet!

AuntiAlias: "Since then" ... Klaus, since Bryce 3D or Since Bryce 4?

ccasady: You can prove it by test copying a Bryce terrain OUT of Bryce and into Photoshop, then bring it back into Bryce... it's lost 64, 744 levels! It's only got 256 now.

roberto: I sincerely hoped to see BSmooth integrated into Bryce 4 (with the curve editor itself) :-(

MetaKlaus: Yes, because Photoshop only plays 256

RabbleRouser: so why can't adobe make photoshop with that many levels?

MetaKlaus: Because Adobe didn't implemented it yet...

Calyxa: it uses fewer bits per pixel

george: Does it have something do with converting the multichannel RGB to a single channel grayscale?

AuntiAlias: Actually, isn't it a matter of how the clipboard is supported, so it's an the OS level? (you gotta copy and paste from one to the other, right?)

MetaKlaus: This is only 1:3...

nacho: other software with more levels for the pc?

boru: Can a standard monitor display 65,000+ shades of gray?

roberto: mmh

ccasady: doesn't Photoshop have the added depth if you need it? You just cab't bring it into Bryce

MetaKlaus: rgb=> grey/gray means that you loose 2/3rd of the information, 16 bit to 8 bit means loosing nearly all (255/256...

AuntiAlias: Wait a second! I see about three or four questions here...

MetaKlaus: No.

And your eye couldn't differentiate more than 16-20 bit anyway

ccasady: The monitor doesn't need to see the greys, the Bryce renderer does.

AuntiAlias: If Chris and Klaus don't mind the chaos of the questions, then fine, let's continue. But if it's a bit of overload, then we can go to a moderated format. Klaus, Chris, you have any druthers?

ccasady: Shall we get back to techniques?

MetaKlaus: yep!

ccasady: okay

ctaylor: brb

ccasady: Blending two terrains in the Picture-blending lab is a must for creating good looking terrains.

Shall we go into a tutorial on that?

Rosy: yes

AuntiAlias: : )

Luie: YEP

boru: y

MetaKlaus: please ;-)

ccasady: it rather simple,

i_claudius: ok

AuntiAlias: do we need to have Bryce launched, Chris?

ccasady: but there's some cool new features I learned recently

MetaKlaus: ANYBODY here who doesn't render in background <G>

?

ccasady: No, you don't really need Bryce launched here.

i_claudius: I don't

Calyxa: how could you not have bryce launched?

Rosy: me

ccasady: Can you remember what the Terrain editor looks like?

PJF88: I'll risk it for the cause.

Lise: Moi

ccasady: Go ahead of you want, it may be more clear

There'a Picture Blending Tab there

Go into the "Pictures" Tab of the Terrain Editor.

kuzman3d: hey anyone here have sand like materials?

ccasady: You see three pictures in a row.

The two on the left combine to make the one on the right.

Clicking inside one of the pictures puts the current terrain into the mix.

Then paste or load a second terrain into the next swatch.
