BryceTalk DTE Interactive Tutorial II
June 17, 1999, part 6

AuntiAlias: roll call!

Charleso: y

JeffP: .

desdanova:

Betty: I'll mail ya when we're done if you want, Heather

boru: §

gdmsynth: k

zman52: §

AuntiAlias: : )

now.... how about if we let component 2 add some color?

so click C

Heather: y

y

Clay: wild!

Heather: y

AuntiAlias: to bring up color .... component 2 is now C and A

Heather: yyyyy

desdanova: fire engine red! wow

AuntiAlias: we still have that gray and yellow and red....

which we'll change

first: let's change to Linear Interpol 2

for color mode for component 2

linear interpol 2 is just a straight gradient between two colors

yow.. now is yellow and red!

so..everyone with me?

Charleso: y

JeffP: .

Heather: y

Clay: taboo baabee

gdmsynth: yup

boru: §

zman52: yup

desdanova:

AuntiAlias: killeroonie! :D

so.. linear interpol made the bottom gray swatch inactive....

but... I want the yellow color to be gray

so I select a midtone gray

why gray?

you may wonder?

why, because when you select Procedural Blend as the combiantion mode....

gray means "no change"

so

press mouse where it says Average... and at near bottom fo pop-up menu, select Proc Blend

The gray that I selected from pop-up menu is middle gray, just where the boundary is between saturated and desaturated color gradients

but.. about that red....

here's the deal about Procedural Blend....

a color mode blend that's been around from the old days of KPT 1

and has also been incorporated into Photoshop's blend modes as hard light, overlay or soft light

prolly overlay

what it does is this:

whre color is gray, there is no change

where darker, the combined output is darker -- and more saturated

where lighter, is lighter and less saturated

so

try experimenting with different colros for the top, currently red, swatch

black will make darker

actually...

just for a moment...

turn off bump

and you'll see it better

jsut at the bottom, some saturation! some kick! coolie-oolie-ooh!

are you seeing it?

Clay: COOL!

JeffP: .....

desdanova:

Charleso: y

boru: coolie

Betty: y

AuntiAlias: so.. what I did is select a dark dark brown color... almost black, but not quite....under the orange red toward the middle bottom of the color picker

now.. add bump back in, and NOW save that texture! :D

but first

a status check

component 1- our rocky noise, set to C and B

ChaMelEon: ZZZzzzzz

AuntiAlias: between that and component 2, the combine mode is set to Porc Blend

Heather: I think I'm out of it - Comp 2 is yellow, orange, red; C&A on, B off

AuntiAlias: Component 2 is set to C and A for output

desdanova: Save texture with new name?

AuntiAlias: and color swatches on component 2 are, from top to bottom:

Clay: I'm DIGGIN THIS!!!!!

AuntiAlias: dark brown (any dark color is good, even plain black is good), gray gray

andthe mode is set to linear interp 2

for combination, we got a filter going that we didn't touch this time around.. and we see that the bottom edge is darker, richer color! :D

Clay: great!

Charleso: y

AuntiAlias: also, color output is set to none for combination, but if you wanted to add layer of subtlety to color there, you could... that's a "try on your own time" experiment for you

so

if you got all that

AuntiAlias: then TOP right button to texture library

Clay: ?

AuntiAlias: and name this new bad boy: brownstone with trimmings (or whatever you want to call it)

or Brownstone 3

Clay?

Clay: if I set some subtle color tothe combo wind...

Clay: sayyy green!

JeffP: ?

AuntiAlias: that's a try on your own thing, Clay....

Clay: it'll look kinda mossy underwater?

AuntiAlias: not gonna answer questions about it here....

Clay: k

AuntiAlias: let me know how your experiments come out! I'm interested in knowing how they do!

JeffP?

JeffP: By moving the diffision driver to one texture...

JeffP: source what have we saved?...

AuntiAlias: wait a moment.. if you ahve saved your texture name.....

go ahead to the Materials Lab

JeffP: render time?...File size...

Clay: !

AuntiAlias: we allowed the possibilty to put this color combiantion together using procedural blend

which you can't do from Texture Source A to B but you CAN do with component 1 and component 2

JeffP: Big light just went on...

AuntiAlias: one more thing here in mat Lab

Change your texture from Brownstone 2 to Brownstone 3 (or whatever you just named this)

Clay: Susan I just wanna say thank you very much for this, I now have a new toy, I thought I knew the DTE but now I know better! you should write a book! LOL!!!!

AuntiAlias: see already how the color looks better?

Now, render!!

whooyee! does this look better or what?!

Betty: ditto that thankyou!

Charleso: coooolio

desdanova: A agree with what Clay said... Bravo and thank you for all the time and effort!!!

gdmsynth: Nice!

Clay: man o man I love learning!

JeffP: My render now has nice warm brown tones on the bottom.

AuntiAlias: it's mo' natural, eh? :D :D :D

Clay: LOL!!

AuntiAlias: I was so psyched when I figured this out....

AuntiAlias: which, incidentally, was after that first how to with kikuchiyu and the others....

JeffP: I hope the new book has more of this DTE stuff!

Clay: I'm so phsyched right now!

Betty: oh nice! : )

Heather: Thanks AuntiA - I'll run thru the notes and reconstruct what I missed - think that's where the color went off

Charleso: I had never really used the DTE before but now I have a good idea how to use it... Thank you Susan

zman52: I can just imagine the hours passing by working on all sorts of old scenes. Thanks Susan

Heather: It's semi-beautiful, but with an orange splotch on the left side

AuntiAlias: see... even mere mortals can do stuff there!

3d~?~elf: eta for the log to be posted?

AuntiAlias: in the DTE

AuntiAlias: boy oh boy, you don't let up, do you?

Clay: I can't wait to add that texture to some volumetric water!

AuntiAlias: tomorrow

hmmm.. don't know how it is with volumetric water, but...

3d~?~elf: k 'overslept'

AuntiAlias: as always, I'm INTERESTED in your results! your findings!

Clay: It'll be cool Susan:-)

AuntiAlias: I gotta tell you, watching this get near the antialiasing pass....

Heather: ? when we're finished

JeffP: Thanks Aunti...Gota scoot...bye all.

AuntiAlias: this dark brown is sooooooo satisfying!

boru: Looks wet!

Clay: well gotta go add some moss to this rock! Thanks again Susan:-)

AuntiAlias: so... now you know why I had to rush you through some of the other stuff...

AuntiAlias: coulnd't do without this little finale! :D

so

heather? your question?

AuntiAlias: oh.. when it comes to moss to rock....

Heather: Is it POSSIBLE that I was out of memory with 128 ram on a new computer?

AuntiAlias: that is what component 3 is for! ; )

Heather: Have had lots of problems, and think this was a glitch

AuntiAlias: hard to say, heather.. I am less experienced in the ways of Windows than Macs... and there are many possible things...

Heather: ok

AuntiAlias: you had a browser open from earlier, right?

could be that...

could be.. oh, who knows?

desdanova: Lots of people had out of memory error tonight

Heather: thanks a lot; you're a great teacher

gdmsynth: Thanks for the en-"lightening" tour...

AuntiAlias: any other questions?

Betty: ah...I think I sense light dawning there. This just could be a *lot* of fun!Thankyou again! <grin>

AuntiAlias: yeah, it's becasue we were working with the DTE... and it's hard...

OH!

but that's a human out of memory error! ; )

gdmsynth: (Naw, I meant the rock...)

boru: Out of brain cells

Charleso: I have u/l mine if anyone wants to compare. http://www.noahsmaze.com/BT/dtedone.jpg

AuntiAlias: wow.. that's pretty red...

mine is still antialiasing

Charleso: yeah I had a color off a little but its cooolio

boru: Mine looks totally different from the one I built in Bryce Camp

AuntiAlias: I'll upload it when finished. :)

desdanova: I have nice wet sand and dry rock.... this is so NEAT :)

AuntiAlias: boru.. did you get more from this this second time around?

boru: Definitely

Third time for me, if you count Ghost Ranch :)

AuntiAlias: wow-- 3.5 hours!

Charleso: 3.5 hours?

AuntiAlias: so.. a total of 6.5 hours to do this texture

ccasady: setting a record.

AuntiAlias: which we did in, what, lecture plus this one before lunch at BryceCamp?

we did three textures total

Charleso: Yes, but I'm glad you did it..

AuntiAlias: it is definitely slower here...

Heather: But I wasted a LOT of time last week, and some this week

gdmsynth: Around the world in less than eighty days...3.5 hours ain't bad!

boru: You didn't have Tucker & allies going around helping this time Susan

AuntiAlias: oh,I'm hungry.....

ccasady: you worked hard!

I'm gonna have to catch the second two hours off the Log.

you die hards

boru: What, it's over already?

Charleso: well I must go.. Very tired.. Susan, all I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you..

Betty: night all and thankyou again, Susan.

gdmsynth: Thanks Susan!

Heather: Night Betty

AuntiAlias: just about to uplad my image

if you wanna hang on for a couple

Charleso: I'll be here a few

desdanova: I'll sleep when I' dead

boru: I'm just waking up here (1:40 am)

Charleso: Susan I'll leave the example image up if you want to leave the link in the logs

desdanova: anitialias 60%....

ccasady: Hey, Link 'n Logs!

AuntiAlias: yeah.. will do. will also leave mine, too

lol

desdanova: lol

3d~?~elf: lol

Charleso: hehe

ccasady: It's late!

desdanova: brings new meaning to paint by the numbers.... :)

boru: Here it's early

ccasady: What would Abe Link'un say?

Charleso: No, I meant the image that showed what we were trying to create... http://www.noahsmaze.com/BT/DTE.jpg

ccasady: Yea, REAALLY late where YOU is john

boru: Nice n quiet, too

desdanova: BTW, where was the orignal picture taken?

Yojimbo: looks impressive anti-aliased

desdanova: oh boy.... i'm at 68%

AuntiAlias: http://www.auntialias.com/bryce/dte/dte_tutorial-done.jpg

ccasady: "done" she says

AuntiAlias: hmmm... less saturated.. the difference between browsers and the real thing

Yojimbo: yes very

AuntiAlias: http://www.auntialias.com/bryce/dte/

also contains finished scene file

Yojimbo: hmm good idea

boru: very tasty

Yojimbo: well thank you ver very much for this little lesson

what will be covered next week?

ccasady: looks a lot like mine

desdanova: little? he says

Yojimbo: yep mine too

gdmsynth: Great Aunti...this tour was wonderful for me as I need to create a LOT of rock for my project. Thanks!

Yojimbo: course I used hers as a base ;)

Charleso: Hey that looks alot more natural than mine...

AuntiAlias: next week? don't know yet

next tuesday is terrain day with Chris Casady and Klaus Busse

I"m trying to get some Poser action going, but it may take a bit

ccasady: Won't that be fun

AuntiAlias: also...

Yojimbo: well now can't miss that

3d~?~elf: euroday?

AuntiAlias: who is good for working wtih Bryce and 3D models....

Charleso: Poser and I don't get along to well :(

desdanova: well it be in german?

AuntiAlias: that's been a topic that some have discussed wanting
