Tuesday BryceTalk Q n A
|
Tuesday BryceTalk Q & A, June 15, 1999AuntiAlias: Let's see... My computer clock says "start" and my watch says "wait a minute" boru: We still have a minute. Matthias: That could mean that your watch has stopped a minute ago... PJF88: on the edge of a time zone... Schbeurd: HI there MedArch: he belg AuntiAlias: Greets! Welcome! Let's get things started here! 3dradmd: Hi all AuntiAlias: I'm expecting Ales to show up pretty soon, and Brian a little later (Bryce engineers) Tandem: So, will they answer my query? AuntiAlias: Until they do, how about if we kick things off with a little discussion about Camera techniques? boru: Ales wouldn't be late, would he? AuntiAlias: Yes, Tandem, they answer all queries! 3d~?~elf: <not if it's aboout 4ward stuff, tandem> Tandem: Tee Hee AuntiAlias: I know that was a request from last week... tho I don't know if the requestor is actually present CBXTX: To log this do we start now or at the end? FireHeart: Well...first you put the film, batteries and remove the lens cap... AuntiAlias: Aaah! Ales is going to be here... Lise: Bonjour Ales! AuntiAlias: Ales Holecek just entered! Matthias: Here's a camera questrion: Can one switch between object tracking and manual tracking within one animation ? PJF88: yo the cavalry! gdmsynth: Hi Ales! ahole: Hi Lise and everybody else.... Hi Greg... AuntiAlias: Well, we can take up camera questions with Ales... For those of you who've not been to one of these events before -- when it's moderated-- here's how we'll do it.... (especially for Q & A) If you have a question, please type ? Then I'll keep track fo the question queue AuntiAlias: go ahead and prepare your question by typing it ahead of time... ahole: Matthias this is not currently possible. The workaround to this problem is track an invisible object which you then move together with the objects you want to track AuntiAlias: then when I call on you, simply tap the return key and into BryceTalk it will pop Matthias: ahole: I see, thanks. gdmsynth: ? AuntiAlias: So.... also, if the question is one of technique -- and you have the *answer* then type A for answer AuntiAlias: so... let's start! gdmsynth, go ahead! : ) gdmsynth: Is there a way to amplify mouse movements _with the reposition tool_ to get courser control (such as the option+mouse allows for finer control)? ahole: Yes there are keys to do so. AuntiAlias: A AuntiAlias: You can use the arrow keys, and the page up page down keys, gdmsynth Plus other tricky combinations to get finer increments of moving: option or alt- arrow key is a tiny increment ahole: But those work only together with the arrows and pgup and pgdown AuntiAlias: option-shift alt-shift is half the amount of a regular key Hometime: ! AuntiAlias: and shift + arrow is twice the distance gdmsynth: Yes, I know about the arrow keys, but is there something similar for the reposition tool (on top)? AuntiAlias: If you have a question, please type ? oops, we lost ales! AuntiAlias: he's baack! ahole: OOI can not type gdmsynth: that is, to get courser control. I want to move the camera across a BIG terrain. ahole: Susan is there anything which changes color of the bottom typing ? AuntiAlias: is this to position the camera in an animation, gdmsynth? Tandem: ? gdmsynth: (Not Command-W was it?) AuntiAlias: Ales, no ahole: I'll be back...... AuntiAlias: Queue: Hometime, Tandem (if you have a question, please type ?) gdmsynth: Yes, I am using numbers now but it would be nice to use the reposition tool without scrolling the mouse 30 times. PJF88: lol Hometime: just wanted to say I didn't find out about the Page up/Down until very recently AuntiAlias: What about directly clicking and dragging the camera from, say, top view? Hometime: A DreamVoyager: ! AuntiAlias: Welcome MetaBrian! Tandem: Is there a way to avoid the cycling of plane/terrain attributes without having to hold down the CTRL key all the while? MetaBrian: Hi Susan et al, I finally made it! AuntiAlias: Hometime, you have an answer for gdmsynth? If so, go ahead! ahole: OK I am back.... Hometime: numerically gdmsynth: The camera is sooo tiny clik and drap often messes it up (or shears objects). So I gather I can't do it with the repostion tool? 3d~?~elf: A Matthias: ? gdmsynth: Yes, I'm doing it numerically. Aesthically, it would be nice to be able to use the repostion tool too. AuntiAlias: Not with a modifier key that I am aware of, gdmsynth 3D elf, go ahead 3d~?~elf: what about changing the speed of the mouse movement? in th comtro;s pane; gdmsynth: OK thanks. ahole: I agree gd gdmsynth: I'm my mouse is running at hi-octane already.. ahole: 3d we will work toward some global solution in the next version AuntiAlias: Tandem, you're on! Hometime: great! Tandem: Already posted it. Tonebone: Hi all AuntiAlias: Queue: Dream Voyager, Matthais MetaBrian: No, Tandem, holding down CTRL is the only way for now. Perhaps a global pref for the future... Tandem: Yeah! KathG: Hi everyone Tandem: ?for MB AuntiAlias: Tandem's question was this: Tandem: Is there a way to avoid the cycling of plane/terrain attributes without having to hold down the CTRL key all the while? Tonebone: Its busy here tonite! AuntiAlias: If you have a question, please type ? Tandem, if yours is a follow up, please go ahead Tandem: Will multiprocessor machines be supported for rendering? ahole: In the future, but how near future hard to tell... MetaBrian: No immediate plans, however... AuntiAlias: Dream Voyager, go ahead, please! : ) DreamVoyager: About Cam: Id love to be able to controll the camera in real-time, using a joystick or similar. Makes it more like dollying, tiltin, paning, etc a real cam, instead of "move timeline, move cam, click key, move timeline, move cam, click key..." (but I also would like to get in line for loads of questions) Tonebone: ? |

Hometime: ? AuntiAlias: Queue: Matthais, Tonebone, Hometime Matthais, go ahead! :D Matthias: Is there a way to insert a complete 360 degree left turn between two key events? without affecting the other segments? ahole: We'll investigate the feasibility of this. But right now we don't know. Matthias: When manually tracking an object with the camera, I positioned the camera at the key events. Accidentally, I turned it left instead of right on a segment. To correct this, I had to change half of the the whole track. ahole: Yes Matthias. You have to use rotation which is little bit less then 360 Degs (359.5) Matthias: And the camera does not bounce back after that? AuntiAlias: Matthais, you are saying that you wound it around in the wrong direction and want to correct it? or are you addressing the problem that Ales just responded to (not quite 360 degrees)? gdmsynth: Umm.. I got rotation of an object many more times than 360 degrees (its a helicoptor rotor). Matthias: I wound it in the wrong direction. When previewing, I noticed that the camera made an unintentional 360 degree turn on that segment. ahole: Mattias it would be good to see the scene. It's hard to troubleshoot like this... AuntiAlias: If you have a question, please type ? If you've got an answer to the question (and you're not Ales or Brian) please type A If you have a comment, please type ! ahole: If you have it anywhere around, please let me know and we'll look at it... Matthias: Well, the camera was aligned to an animation path, and at each key event I positioned the camera towards a fixed object. As the path wound around the object, I had to turn the camera. On one segment, I did it wrong. That was on the middle of the long path. gdmsynth: A Matthias: I noticed that angles seem to be implemented as arbitrary reals, like ahole: Mattias i think in this case you should probably use object targetting AuntiAlias: gdmsynth, go ahead! Matthias: 720 degree meaning a double turn. So when changing angles at a key event by rotating the camera (by say 360 degrees), this affects the other segments. gdmsynth: You can remove rotation keyframs in the AML. Also try tracking (the camera) with an invisible sphere to control its rotation. It works nicely. AuntiAlias: all done with this one? cause if so....... then Tonebone, you're up! Matthias: So you just move the invisible sphere. That sounds more reasonable than my approach. Thanks. Tonebone: Are there any plans to incorporate "soft shadows" in future releases? It's a bit resource hungry having to use grouped multiple point lights to achieve this effect..and the results are not very convincing. AuntiAlias: If you have a question, please type ? MetaBrian: Yes, we're looking at some techniques now...expect something next time around... AuntiAlias: Queue: Hometime (what, no one else has questions?!) boru: ? DreamVoyager: I do??????????????? Tonebone: Excellent, thanks, any Idea when? :) FireHeart: ? Hometime: What makes Bryce so unique in it's render output? The quality, I mean... MetaBrian: No sooner than the next major rev, I can't give a reasonable time estimate as we still need to ship the update and then look ahead... AuntiAlias: Queue is *now*: Hometime, boru, DreamVoyager, Fireheart... MetaBrian: For one thing, the large use of complex procedural textures... Tonebone: Thanks Brian gdmsynth: ? i_claudius: Hello again Hometime: The DTE is more advanced than any of the other 3D packages I know about... AuntiAlias: Hi, i_claudius; we've got Q & A going with Ales (ahole) and Brian (MetaBrian) the two principal Bryce engineers.... if you have a question, please type ? Tonebone: ! AuntiAlias: I'll call on you and then you can ask your question... MetaBrian: That's my point, that aspect of the product is fairly unique at this point... Hometime: very simple to get started with, too i_claudius: Okay. I'm just going to sit back for a while and get my bearings. ahole: Susan do we have other questions? MetaBrian: There are other aspects too, such as the sky models and special rendering/shading modes... AuntiAlias: When you're done, please say Done or Okay or Thanks or something like that so I don't step all over previous questioner answerer yes, boru is next! boru: Easter egg minutiae: when I command-click on the words "Moon Image" in the Sky Lab, I get a popup menu of names and faces which I can slap onto the moon. Q: Who or what is Bog Dog? Hometime: OK, I'll pass the to the queue MetaBrian: A nickname for one of the engineers here that worked on Bryce... AuntiAlias: Queue-- DreamVoyager, Fireheart, gdmsynth, Tonebone (Todd Bodgan) MetaBrian: The person pictured is in drag...he doesn't "really" look like that ;) AuntiAlias: that is, the Bryce Engineer who is also known as BogDog... boru: doesn't look human Tonebone: cancel mine Susan, Brians already answered it :) AuntiAlias: k, tonebone! thanks!
>>>> Next up: Fuzzy objects, object rotation, sky wish list items, more... |
