the setting I have for top section, which is resize, is 18.1%

eilif: 40

AuntiAlias: well, your mileage may vary.... and it looks like it does....

but drag on the tool so that the numbers all say something near 90-100%

can even be more than 100%

but .... do you see more lightness show up?

Okay, now chris, I want you to notice soemthing

Heather: I have a green for Noise and a Green for Phase

AuntiAlias: well, hmmm!

ccasady: Sure nuff! just a filer, What's it filtering?

Yojimbo: You all are using the White to Blue Altitude map?

AuntiAlias: if you point your mouse ove rthe corner, you'll see a green highlight....

Heather: 1,2,3, at top left are all green too

AuntiAlias: aaah!

Yojimbo: altitude formula Chris

the Basic Altitude I've got here doesn't have more than 1 texture component. just one

Yojimbo: yep same here

AuntiAlias: upper left that has 123 is only green on 1

eilif: 1 and green noise

ccasady: Guess it's filtering the color map and Alpha output

AuntiAlias: So....

let's take a moment to examine what's going on here....

Yojimbo: color and Bump actually

Heather: I turned off 2 and 3

AuntiAlias: : ) good heather....

eilif: just tell us how they should be

AuntiAlias: what we have is a simple texture wehre there's no noise -- that's why there's smooth gradation from one color to another.

AuntiAlias: this is another lesson in the DTE -- find somethign that is doing what you want it to, and poke around to understand why it's workign the way it is

Sumo: I have sine noise - green noise light ON, more intense with mouse

Luie: ahhhh

3d~?~elf: think some went to dte via a channel instead of b

AuntiAlias: then come back in via the texture srouce for Basic Alititude

Luie: click on the pink button of Channel B Basic Altitude

Sumo: Yup, still have sine noise

AuntiAlias: (editorial comment: you know the great part about doing this all together is that it's pretty easy to find out where all the wrong turns are in working with software :D)

ccasady: true! beta testing of a sort!

Sumo: I think the DTE may be near unique in that respect!

AuntiAlias: as a person who's interested in knowing what those wrong turns are -- in order to provide better understanding-- I kinda like this! : )

AuntiAlias: Luie, you're right except that parametric is not the setting for Texxture Source B

both should be set to world space

Sumo: Okay, that is the texture I have, but I definitely have noise and mine are set to World Space.

AuntiAlias: other than that, your screen shot is fine

eilif: ok, it came that way by itself

AuntiAlias: weird

Yojimbo: Yeah mine defaulted differently as well

AuntiAlias: world space is fine, perfect!

AuntiAlias: weird about the defaults there

AuntiAlias: so, let's go through and check things out.

component 1: noise editor

Noise Type: Nothing

(all other settings in noise editor don't matter)

Sumo: Changed to Nothing. Weirdness at 6am...

AuntiAlias: There is no other component working.....

only 1 and combination

eilif: C and B are lighted

Betty: so if there's noise and filter for a non-existent component, Bryce ignorethem right?

AuntiAlias: yes, that is output: C and B.

just for kicks, let's see what happens with A

only

AuntiAlias: so click each of them to cmake it

C darker

A lighter

B darker

ccasady: are we in the DTE or ML?

AuntiAlias: DTE

ccasady: with whitch texture?

AuntiAlias: Basic Altitude

Luie: YEP

Luie: it turned B&W with c and b darkened

AuntiAlias: right.. what you see now matches what you did see in the center window in Texture Source B -- the grayscale gradation.

Luie: YES!

AuntiAlias: you're looking only at alpha! : )

Sumo: ok

AuntiAlias: my good friend alpha!

Sumo: who changes his spelling....

AuntiAlias: now.. do you have the filter control up and showing?

Luie: <lightbulb appears over my head blinking slowly>

AuntiAlias: yeah, I call him alfa cause we're buddies

AuntiAlias: and you notice that the filter setting has this lovely, intuitive name:

X(a*Altitude+b)

bascially i look for the name with meaning to it...

Altitude

here's where looking at your texture in that flat 2D comes in handy....

ccasady: This is good, a good altitude is always good to have

Sumo: No it didn't but I know the prob now - noise and filter were pointing at component 2

AuntiAlias: casue what's lower is low altitude, and what's higher is higher altitude

aaah!

Sumo's got a great point to make.... (tho maybe Sumo didn't know how great a point it was)

and that is....

eilif: yupper!

ccasady: This is where you can tighten up the gradient!

AuntiAlias: The DTE remembers your settings for components 2 and 3 even if you don't have them activated

so...

teh great implciation for that is:

next time you go hanging out in here, looking around, trying to understand this silly ol' place ; )

...

you now know that you can shut off noise components and that they'll be remembered....

so.....

say for instance you want to understand what's going on with component 1 and 2....

well....

AuntiAlias: how about shutting off compontent 2 for a moment, leaving and rendering in the scene....

jsut to see what' s up with that

you can!

and when you come back, just switch back component 2 again

to get the old texture back

cool, eh?
