BryceTalk DTE Interactive Tutorial, June 10, 1999
part 3

Betty: ?

AuntiAlias: here's what we wanna do next. now let's put color back in

first, click the C button to put color back

betty?

Betty: one more qu. in noise editor

AuntiAlias: go for it

Betty: what's the 1d 2d and 3d at the bottom?

ie what do they do?

AuntiAlias: Bryce noise exists in Bryce world space.. the noise can b be 1 dimensional, 2 dimensional, or 3 dimensional....

we started with 3D noise and want to keep it that way.

I suggest that you try, on your own at another time, using 1D or 2D to see what it does

Betty: ok, thanx

AuntiAlias: actually three quick clicks will give you an idea pretty fast. again, clicking the cancel button leaves the noise unchanged : )

Folx, this is how you discover what to do here!

try things out. If you're afraid that you broke the noise ; ), then just click the cancel button

so... we have a pretty gray noise

but the rock was brown

so

see the three color sliders <ed note. Oops, instead of "sliders" it should read "circles"> on the left?

those are the color swatches

Heather: ?

AuntiAlias: there's a pop up menu below that has all manner of ways to map color onto this noise, but we'll go with the current one

AuntiAlias: which is spline interpolation

Luie: took me a minute

AuntiAlias: (basically it's using all three colors to all three ranges of color value)

so...

change to varying shades of brown

wait!

let's make it simpler.

Heather: ?

AuntiAlias: go to the pop-up menu and select Linear Interpol 2

yes, Heaterh?

Luie: the three little dots on the left of component 1 heather

they change the color

Heather: can't find popup menu

AuntiAlias: triangle at bottom

under three color dots

is there anyone who has NOT changed their color output to Linear Interpol 2?

Heather: I found it - what do I select now?

AuntiAlias: Linear Interpol 2 is a straight linear blend bewteen two colors

Linear Interpol 2

Heather: k

AuntiAlias: noitce that all the white has gone away from colors

the two colros that are being interpolated from are the top two grays

chagne them to brown.

gdmsynth: Hmmm mine's pinkish

AuntiAlias: light tan brown

to change colors, you press mouse on color swatch and get color picker

use option-click or alt click to get the numerical slider

AuntiAlias: I like that method, and using the HLS sliders

gdmsynth: ?

AuntiAlias: but

gdmsynth: I like the HLS Sliders too but they cover up the component. Is there a way to move them?

AuntiAlias: that color dialog box is another place wehre Bryce and Brycetalk can't coexist (basically any of the dialog boxes with gray strips on the top won't let you access bryce talk)

alas, no, gdmsynth

so

status check:

Noise is there...

desdanova: §

AuntiAlias: output is set to color and alfa-- oops! we gotta add bump for this!

color is set to linear interpol 2 with two shades of brownie tanish light desaturated brown

AuntiAlias: Add Bump

and...

gdmsynth: ?

AuntiAlias: you gotta trust me on this.. it will happen next

Yojimbo: §

Heather: ?

AuntiAlias: turn A off.. alfa off.

so A is dark

gdmsynth?

Clay: §

eilif: ?

Heather: x?

AuntiAlias: while gdmsynth is typing his/her question, Heather, go ahead with yours

Heather: i cancelledit

AuntiAlias: eilif, what's your question?

eilif: why A off? What does it do and not?

gdmsynth: Sorry, I answered my own question

AuntiAlias: there are two ways to approach this... one is to let me answer it in time with the tutorial....

and to trust me on it

the other is to talk theory the whole dang time and not do anything! ; )

so... like I said, just trust me on it

eilif: ok, just wanted a general expl, anytime you want

Luie: how could ya not trust Auntie

technoid: hehe

Clay: LOL

AuntiAlias: k, it will come! like a punch line of a good joke, I hope!

ccasady: we can't learn the WHOLE DTE here, just this tutorial

Yojimbo: lol

AuntiAlias: so

if we're all together on this

Clay: ( don't test her, she feeling ill)

3d~?~elf: ...adding bump...

AuntiAlias: yeah, Clay's right. No more questions about videos. Besides, right now I look like... like.... well, you don't want to know. sometimes ascii is simply enough! : )

so... C and B are light, and A is dark, for output

Yojimbo: lol

AuntiAlias: okay...

Clay: LOL

AuntiAlias: now, remember, all this time we've been working with the texture called Graystone? er. Greystone?

how about we save what we've done so far?

3d~?~elf: k

Luie: gray grey whats the difference

AuntiAlias: I'll tell you a bit abaout how to do that....

on the right of the Combination panel are two littel buttons. They look like metal.

be very careful with them!

verrrry careful!

(or as they say, be afraid, be very afraid!)

top one is to get you to the texxture library

bottom one is randomize all combination

be very careful that you click the one you want to click.

3d~?~elf: top is pink...

GreG: elf!

AuntiAlias: (fortuantely, you can get to previous state by a command-Z or a ctrl+z)

Yojimbo: ?

AuntiAlias: but just get in the cautious habit of pointing your mouse over the button and reading the little text readout in the lower left hand corner

yojimbo?

Jeffric: shift clicking the word 'combination' take you to the library too

Yojimbo: What happens if it just says Reset Component 1

?

AuntiAlias: good tip, Jeffric. Avoid those nasty buttons altogether

GreG: elf?

Heather: ?

GreG: I tried to icq ya

AuntiAlias: Yo, that's because you're looking at the buttons on compoinent 1 and not for the combiantion (center one, lower part of the DTE)

3d~?~elf: < greg, hang on a mo', k?>

Yojimbo: doh?

GreG: sorry = l

Yojimbo: forgive my lacitude

Heather: I see no readout when hovering over the top little pink screw

Yojimbo: Keeping track of too many things at one time...thanks ;)

AuntiAlias: k... let me tell you what to do next, cause once you get to texture library, you can't have brycetalk open

you gotta have BryceTalk be in background.

AuntiAlias: so click on background of the DtE to make BryceTalk go away and then look for readouts

remember, you won't ALWAYS have BryceTalk open each time you work in DTE! ; )

... I hope!

technoid: LOL

Clay: LOL

Betty: move the filter dialog, Heather (probably)

Yojimbo: lol

AuntiAlias: so...

Heather: got it when I turned bryce off

AuntiAlias: i was about to tell you what to do next

there's a category called "user"

and a button at the bottom that says Add

so click the name User to bring up the User categoery

then Add

gdmsynth: ?

AuntiAlias: name this Rocky texture or something profound

Luie: I saved mine under rocks as brownstone

AuntiAlias: tis fine. As long as you know where it is

ccasady: "Aunti's seagull frosting"

gdmsynth: My sample texture doesn't look anything like the one I made in the combination. Why?

3d~?~elf: pee uuuu

Yojimbo: lol

AuntiAlias: because you have bump showing here in the dte

adn you didnt' turn on Show with bump in the little pop-up menu under the preveiw window

welby: ctrk+z id goof

AuntiAlias: alas, brycetalk doesn't fit everywhere, I forgot about that till now...

gdmsynth: OK...A should be off when we save right?

AuntiAlias: yes

so.. once you have that done, meet me out in the materials Lab! CLick ther Check Mark (not the X)

gdmsynth: Yes...Aunti, just want to say this interactive tutorial is great!

AuntiAlias: Materials Lab roll call!!

§

ccasady: There!

Clay: I agree!

eilif: *

robokoneko: *

welby: here

Betty: §

Epsilon 3: §

desdanova: §

PJF88: yo

Jeffric: I'm there

Clay: §

gdmsynth: §

AuntiAlias: (fill the screen !)

3d~?~elf: ¡

Luie: K

JeffP: OK...

Lise: Here

Heather: here

technoid: here

Heather: here

Yojimbo: pi

Sumo: Ja

AuntiAlias: allrightie..I'll take it that you're all here..... so.. notice that the name for your texture is... uh.. Greystone.... Just to keep things straight, find the texture that you just saved, either by the pop-up menu or shift-click the name Greystone and find

your texture and then select it

gdmsynth: OK but my combination looks great but the material example looks more like a flat rag. Why are they different?

AuntiAlias: patience, young apprentice!

3d~?~elf: lmao!!!

3d~?~elf: ?

AuntiAlias: you have, in the A column, Diffuse color.

AuntiAlias: what you want to have, going forward, is diffuse color and ambient color (yes, gdmsynth, it's true, this will help!) and bump height all in A column

gdmsynth: No, I have difuse set to A. I mean it looked different in the DTE Combination....should I be patient?

AuntiAlias: well, there's always a little disconnect between what renders inteh scene and what you see in the mateirals lab and what you see in the DTE....

it's why the trips back and forth are why they are what they are

i.e., frequent

gdmsynth: I had a great rock texture in the DTE!

ccasady: I fixed mine by again adjusting frequency, but here in the materials lab

AuntiAlias: so.. you have diffuse/ambient color and bump in A columns.... (hang with us, gdmsynth, you haven't yet rendered in scene yet, nor done any other adjustments that I'm gonna tell you about)

but... no bump setting via slider

bump height still is 0; do change that to...

Luie: I'm with ya Auntie, got a column selected for diffuse, ambience, and bump height. Okay so far. Ambience is 19.6 bump 0

eilif: :(

AuntiAlias: oh around 24 or so

gdmsynth: Tried adjusting the freq but it still looks like a muddy rag. Did I do something wrong? Do the rest of you have beautiful rocks?

ccasady: 23

AuntiAlias: gdmsynth, please wait...

ccasady: good guess!

Luie: I'm waiting for the part that makes it darker underwater

AuntiAlias: we'll ge tthere. like I said, I haven't rendered this in the scene yet...

Luie's right on it...

and lo...

we've been going at it for nearly 2 hours now : )

Clay: pant pant

AuntiAlias: gotta give you at least a preview for what we'll be doing next week!

Clay: gasping for breath

Luie: and in 14 minutes my boss no longer pays me!

eilif: you mean you won't answer my q today? shock! :)

technoid: .

AuntiAlias: now, for kicks, let's render (now that bump is set) click Check mark, and go to scene and render. shift T while rendering brings up bryce talk! : )

okay. so now we got a rocky uniform appearnace. I'ts looking okay as it renders, but the darker part is what is needed......

AuntiAlias: how does your render look, gdmsynth?

or anyone else for that matter?

Yojimbo: much the same

Steve Lareau: Egads Aunti- you STILL at it? LOL! You'll be beat tomorrow!

welby: good

Heather: mine is beautiful, Aunti

ccasady: great

JeffP: Very Uniform...

Luie: Looks like the tip of the rock that's not in the water.

3d~?~elf: bump is set to 23?

Luie: light tan

and marbly

AuntiAlias: or soemthign like that.... yep

3d~?~elf: k

Steve Lareau: haha!

Heather: bump to 23????

AuntiAlias: k.. back to the materials lab... oh, now might be a good time to save the scene file. Yes, heather, bump somewhere around 23 (it was a good first guess)

Heather: I better go back to lab

eilif: haha, mine looks like mudpie

AuntiAlias: materials Lab!!!

3d~?~elf: think mine looks like luie

technoid: Mine looks like chocolate rock

Luie: like me or my rock? lol

technoid: with mold on it

gdmsynth: I added bump map and ambience but still it doesn't look anything like the texture I have in the DTE which is what I really want. Should I be able to get it or are they that different?

3d~?~elf: yup...>g<

AuntiAlias: okay... the mystery behind the alfa stuff, the mystery behind the height stuff... the mystery behind the no green button will all shortly be made known

Heather: I did 23.7 and now it looks like choc chip cookie dough

Yojimbo: gdm it will come don't worry

Luie: heather lighten your dark brown color

to a pretty tan

AuntiAlias: yes, the two colors should not be so far off from one another.

but...

hagn on a sec, cause I'm gonna go off in a different direction. your color correction is something you can do on your own later : )

Heather: it was perfect before i went from 0 bumb to 23.7 though fairly smooth

3d~?~elf: kind a frappe latte

Luie: YEAH! good description elf

3d~?~elf: >g<

AuntiAlias: actually choc chip cookie dough isnt 'so bad, tho it depends how much is dough and how much is chips! (emphasis on dough, not chips)

are we all in the Materials Lab?

Clay: LOL

§

robokoneko: *

desdanova: §

Epsilon 3: §

JeffP: .

gdmsynth: §

eilif: *

welby: yep

Luie: k

Yojimbo: §

Betty: §

ccasady: (tm)

Heather: well I went to 22 and it looks more like chips, but is still rendering again

3d~?~elf: ¡

Yojimbo: ©

PJF88: y

technoid: k

3d~?~elf: ( same settings...same monitor...different look on 2 os's)

Sumo: Okay (wake up JeffRic)

AuntiAlias: heather, the bump setting I put was a guess, an intial guess. Later on, after other things are put in place, I'd be apt to change the bump as I see fit... so for now, go with it

allrightie then!

for the altitude part...

Heather: ok, it's almost finished aliasing, anti

AuntiAlias: how many people here understand what happens if you have a texture source drive your diffusion?

AuntiAlias: heather, I'm moving on....

technoid: um

AuntiAlias: (I didn't even let my scenme finish antialias)

eilif: negative

3d~?~elf: ~¿~

Jeffric: sort of AA

ccasady: I do, some things become dark.

AuntiAlias: okay....

Yojimbo: yep

PJF88: not me

Betty: somewhat

AuntiAlias: we'll do a "try it and find out" method to find out

Heather: nope

Luie: Im starting to

Fill me in Auntie

Heather: by George, I think I've got it.
