BryceTalk DTE Interactive Tutorial, June 10, 1999

AuntiAlias: a lil tip before we get started:

Highlight speakers with different colors to help you track who is saying what.

(the people list allows you to change colors--Upper left side, 2nd Green button)

PJF88: Your bright red, Aunti...

AuntiAlias: no kidding! and a slight fever, too! ; )

PJF88: You're!

renato!: a feverish glo

eilif: not enough colors...

Epsilon 3: hi all

renato!: pretty colors

I'm feeling blue

AuntiAlias: well, for tonight, mostly the only person you want to highlight is me... since I"ll be typing feverishly (ahem) to get you more deeply acquainted with the DTE

renato!: hehehe

Sumo: You don't look good in orange Aunty...

AuntiAlias: So... first off..... have Bryce launched!

eilif: check

AuntiAlias: just some ground rules before we get going...

The first part of this will be a small discussion about the different parts of the DTE-- Bryce's Deep Texture Editor.

and then we'll do a step by step interactive tutorial

AuntiAlias: SHIFT T is your FRIEND!

anytime anywhere inside of Bryce (well almost) you can get back to BryceTalk by pressing Shift T

renato!: what a shifty maneuver

AuntiAlias: Tonight is also an experiment in doing a larger scale interactive tutorial... where one person leads the rest through a process in Bryce. We'll probably have to do course corrections as we go.

Yojimbo: just not when you're rendering

AuntiAlias: Also, I'm not sure yet what to do in terms of protocol....

PJF88: you've written some of this before... ;-)

AuntiAlias: last time I did this, we had 5 people following along, so it was easy to say:

status check ...1..2..3... conditions

and everyone said

§

<ed note: not all symbols used in BryceTalk are HTML-compliant. Some subsitution has occurred.>

(option-V for you mac folks, no idea what it is for windows)

or *

but

desdanova: §

AuntiAlias: we got 20 people...

Clay: §

Yojimbo: Hey Caly

ccasady: 21

AuntiAlias: each time we do that, that means that the whole dang screen will move up with 20 §

Yojimbo: Hey ccassady

42

AuntiAlias: so....

ccasady: Jim?

Calyxa: hey, Jim, Chris, Susan, et. al

eilif: who's the slowest here?

AuntiAlias: I think that I'll do a status check from time to time...

eilif: the slowest do the *

Jeffric: hi Caly !

eilif: :)

Yojimbo: j/k Chris

Calyxa: I'm not going to be able to play along 'cuz I'm rendering an animation..

AuntiAlias: and then, if there are problems, the problem person who's NOT there yet can shout out something

Baument: hey caly

Yojimbo: the answer to the question of life

AuntiAlias: not to woory, Calyxa, you've seen this before! : )

Calyxa: figured as much. hey, Ed.

Clay: hi Caly

Baument: big lightning here folks, better bug out

Calyxa: hey, Clay

eilif: I thought there was only room for 20

Yojimbo: ya Ed

cya that is

3d~?~elf: hi dawn!

Calyxa: in a lobby... created rooms can hold however many come in.

AuntiAlias: Okay....

dawn: hey there..little forest dweller

AuntiAlias: same with lobbies, too, as it happens, calyxa...

3d~?~elf: >g<

AuntiAlias: So, since it'll take a few folks a few more minutes to show up...

Calyxa: it creates a new lobby any time an existing lobby gets up to 20 people in it.

AuntiAlias: how about we do a little discussion about what is in the DTE?

oh!

and DTE, in case you were wondering, stands for Deep Texture Editor

it's really the heart of Bryce's whole procedural textures...

I've referred to it as "the Procedural Mecca" : )

eilif: I only found out last week there was a triangle to change from "Combine" into a million other things

AuntiAlias: it's like a whole treasure chest room that you access mostly from the Materials Lab

3d~?~elf: maybe set up the protocol, while we're waiting?

AuntiAlias: yes, I think that we'll have to go to a loose protocol.

when we get interactive, I do want to hear that you're THERE or NOT there, but for now, folks, I have the floor! : )

let's see...

to begin

remember-- Shift T is your friend! gets you to Bryce talk from within Bryce!

AuntiAlias: I'm gonna create a terrain and a rock.... holding down the control key when I click both, so that they come in plain gray

go ahead and do that with me if you'd like.. we'll come back and do it again, later, but if you're here now, you're ahead of the game! : )

so.... with the terrain and the rock created, select them both, and then click the M to get to the materials lab

anyone NOT in the Materials LAb yet? if so, type #

Yojimbo: #

oh otherway around

AuntiAlias: kay.... I'll do a little soft shoe here... while you all get into the materials lab

well, the silence is very confirming, so I'll assume you're all here in the Materials Lab with me! : )

ccasady: I'm there

AuntiAlias: (I like a large monitor for this)

renato!: §

AuntiAlias: uh...

Luie: Everytime I go the brycetalk dissappears....

Yojimbo: I like several ;)

AuntiAlias: hold off on the §.. if we all do that, we'll scroll up over 20 lines of confirms.. that's why I'm asking for anyone who's NOT there...

AuntiAlias: the silence is confirming

shift T brings back bryce talk

welby: hello

AuntiAlias: you'll be going back and forth from bryce to brycetalk

welby: first time soory

Luie: Thanks:)

AuntiAlias: welby, you're joining us in progress, we're going to the DTE to talk about what's there before we start out wiht the interactive part

welby: sounds good

AuntiAlias: okay. see the diffuse color swatch? should be gray.

click the A column there with diffuse.

voila! a texture source appears!

AuntiAlias: Bryce randomly assigns one from any of the texture srouces available in the texture source list

anyone NOT have the Texture Source A up?

if so, type #

AuntiAlias: (if there's big silence we'll move on!)

Ringo: Hello

I made it just in time.

AuntiAlias: Hi Ringo, we're in the Materials lab, with the diffuse color marker in column a

so...

on the right, there in texture source A, there are several things to observe

buttons on top... (you ahve to have brycetalk in the background for this to work)

Editor, Texture Source Editor are buttons on left.

Texture Source Edito ris the pale pink one

we'll be using that A LOT!

also

on the right

a name (mine is oasiswave; I expect yours are all different)

and a downward pointing triangle

that results in pop-up menu when you press mouse on it.

take a moment and look at all of those

and

tip... hold down the shift key and press the name...

you'll get to the textures library

note: libraries are one place where you cannot be in bryce and elicit Brycetalk at the same time....

k....

now let's all select the same texture so that we see the same thing when we go into the Deep Texture Editor

so in menu, select the rocks category and select the name Greystone

there is a slight problem, tho.

there are two Greystones

try 'em both. Keep the one that looks really gray and not multi colored! : )

AuntiAlias: hi DigiVI, we're in the materials lab (with a terrain and rock created in the scene)...

and the marker for diffuse color is in column A, so that we got a texture source appearing

DigiVI: thanks

Yojimbo: That's funny I only get one Greystone

Heather: what name? names are all different

AuntiAlias: and we are just now finding the texture called Greystone, which is in the Rocks category (menu accessed from upper right button)

if the one graystone is gray, then cool!

Yojimbo: and it looks like the multicolored one

AuntiAlias: Rocks > Graystone

oops Greystone

AuntiAlias: yow, yojimbo, I don't know how to help you out here. Graystone has been a texture that ships with Bryce from way back.

perhaps it got deleted somehow?

Yojimbo: yep I remember it in B3

not here now, but I'll make due

AuntiAlias: thanks : )

3d~?~elf: maybe cruise the list w/o shift klik, to see if there are 2 greystones

AuntiAlias: k

it's white and two different levels of gray

in the meantime, let's get ourselves to the DTE!

Yojimbo: yep I remember it

yeah not there elf, but no worries

AuntiAlias: click the pink button and meet me in the DTE (shift T brings back bryce talk)

are we all here? : )

and yes, I've no problem with 20+ yesses in response now....

kerrygrafx: :)

eilif: *

AuntiAlias: wow. 30

JeffP: Yes...

robokoneko: *

Yojimbo: P

ccasady: yes

welby: yes

gdmsynth: Yes

PJF88: y

Sumo: YES

renato!: §

Luie: yipper

desdanova: §

Betty: yup

Jeffric: yes, crowded in here too

zman52: yes

3d~?~elf: dah?

Epsilon 3: §

AuntiAlias: okay then... I'll take it as yes for the rest.... : )

Heather: yes

Calyxa: virtual yes

AuntiAlias: whee! all these little panels!

Ringo: I join the class late soo.. I'm waiting.

AuntiAlias: component 1, 2, 3 and combination!

the DTE is a noise synthesizer....

we got one noise here... and it can be filtered... maybe shifted with phase...

and an output determined by the C A B buttons on the right of each of the three components

AuntiAlias: C = color

A = Alfa

B = Bump

which correspond to.... <gasp!> you guessed it!

those three different parts ofthe texture source preview that we saw in the Materials Lab

see? there *is* rhyme and reason to the DTE! there really is! :D

so...

let me ask.. those of you who are with me so far...

AuntiAlias: did you create a rock and a terrain?

eilif: *

ccasady: *

renato!: §

PJF88: y

Luie: no prob

eilif: ?

kerrygrafx: Y

3d~?~elf: §

Bryguy: si

Epsilon 3: §

zman52: *

welby: yep

gdmsynth: §

JeffP: Sure

AuntiAlias: For what we're going to do tonight, we have Kikuchiyu to thank. Kikuchiyu requested, a little while back, how to make a rock material that looked like the image shown in http://personal.pitnet.net/amgdesigns/espirtu.html

Sumo: *

Betty: §

AuntiAlias: heh heh heh... personal pitnet, if s/he's following his/her logs, is gonna wonder why the sudden leap in hits tonight! :D

see the rocks in the midground?

Yojimbo: lol

AuntiAlias: dark near waterline

not dark above

these kinda difficult things are there for the Deep Texture Editor! : )

but we'll get through it....

okay... now that you've had a glimpse of the goal, let's go back to the Noise here....

........at the bottom of the DTE, there are three little pebbles, Noise, Filter and Phase.

go ahead and click the Noise and Filters so that they're showing. We'lld eal with Noise first

AuntiAlias: the noise capsule/slider doohickey is somethign you can move around

Notice that there are four little areas on it, and a lavender button is on 1

if you have the filter open, too (it can be moved around as well), it also has the four areas, too

I bet that your marker is in the first spot!

(for the noise)

and that the upper left section of the noise slider is green

that upper left thingie has two funtions:

1- it tells you if there is a noise present for the current position (in this case, 1)

2, it's the button to bring you to another place of cruel and unusual zaniness in Bryce -- the noise editor

: )

ccasady: ?
