BryceTalk Tuesday Current Project Discussion,
June 8, 1999 — Part 3

AuntiAlias: yes.. the 2 Bryce camp events that have taken place have been put on at the initiative of folks outside meta.

MetaJohn: learn, learn, learn and teach

AuntiAlias: (hey, I can't help it if I got the ball rolling on the first one and then came on staff to Meta.. it still was not a Meta-sponsored event)

well...

put 30 people together in a room

a lab of computers

Anon: Why not come to Europe and put one here?

george: The key is that you have to start it I think

AuntiAlias: lots of logistics just to get you to that place -- first year we brought a computer lab to a place, 2nd year, Chris put the event on wehre there's a computer lab

Schbeurd: 30 people, it should be feasible

MetaJohn: Anyone interested?

AuntiAlias: then get teachers to teach....

and topics

Schbeurd: 30 computers... Hmmmm ?

AuntiAlias: so.. this last one

MetaJohn: We can probably help you find a lab if bnecessary

MetaJohn: Should make you some money if you do it right

AuntiAlias: started out with terrains on Monday, DTE on tuesday

MetaJohn: But not a lot

Sumo: Yes, very interested. I just have this nagging feeling it would be hard to co-ordinate cross cultures and languages

AuntiAlias: wednesday was Hear from the Developers day....

george: I'd love to do one here....midwest....hrm

Sumo: Can we have the money bit in writing John?

AuntiAlias: Ales and Brian in the morning, and in the afternoon, Robert Bailey talking abou animation

Sumo: ;-)

DreamVoyager: I have also been discussing with some Swedish collegues about an out-doors meet... look at skies, shaddows, tec and figure out how to recreate them... take time to see the details that create reality. That's how I learned to make skies etc in Bryce1... :-)

Sumo: It's the best way Dream

AuntiAlias: uh, I don't know about the making money part, John. Really.

Sumo: Hey Lise!

AuntiAlias: I sure didn't make any money last year

george: heh

Lise: Allo Everybody!

MetaJohn: Sure M O N E Y

KathG: Hi lise :)

AuntiAlias: the event paid for itself, and that was about it

Schbeurd: Salut Lise

DreamVoyager: Hiya Lee-Zhe

Lise: Sorry for the later arrival, we are still having thunderstorms here.

AuntiAlias: excellent, Dream re: observe and then create! : )

KathG: Raining heavy here <g>

DreamVoyager: Yes, tis the only way, if ones aim is to make Bryce scenes realistic.

Schbeurd: Bad weather here too Lise

AuntiAlias: Thnursday we heard from Bill Munns about how he created those scenes with tons of objects in them, and learned a tiny bit about lighting placement and such

MetaJohn: Dream just got a call from Ales about your lights

AuntiAlias: Friday was decal day

KathG: Looking forward to reading that log :)

AuntiAlias: picture textures on objects

DreamVoyager: really? and?

Sumo: Big question (hope the audience is right...)

MetaJohn: He says you must have been turning autokey off after you started

Sumo: Did Mr Munns ever do the other six Wonders? And are they somewhere on the MC site?

MetaJohn: We also had a tree class from Calyxa on Thursday

DreamVoyager: Nope... I turned autokey off the first time I started B4... I realised the first day that it was a neusence for my way of working.

AuntiAlias: Kath, this is Bryce Camp we're talking about, the events dont' have logs, except for the BryceTalk event thursday evening, which was fun and goofy

KathG: Sorry I just realized that <vbg>

DreamVoyager: But thanks anyhow :-)

AuntiAlias: wait, John....

MetaJohn: Yes Bill did all the wonders, inlcuding the 8th the bryce tower

AuntiAlias: so if you EVER have auto key OFF, then you get inadvertant keyframes placed in your scene when you do copy and paste objects?

MetaJohn: You will find some pars of the between chapters in the Bryce manual

Sumo: I have seen the pics, just wanted to see them in colour!

MetaJohn: I told him that Dream, but he says he can not duplicate it

DreamVoyager: Well... honestly... I hope I never will either ;-)

AuntiAlias: actually, I'm still working on the collaborative scene for the HTML image map, and found a similar kinda situation

MetaJohn: Should have said: You will find some parts of them between chapters in the Bryce manual

AuntiAlias: where Kwang created a wall from lotsa cylinders.

DreamVoyager: Im using Mac, OS8.6 if that makes any difference.

AuntiAlias: and there were keyframes placed in duplicated objects

i wasn't around when the scene was created, I only got the result

and had to delete keyframes on duplicated items

DreamVoyager: Also, Iv noticed that if I import a scene from B2, select an object and then "un-rotate" or "un-resize" the object most often REALYY hits the ceiling

MetaJohn: I gotta go guys, it has been fun, thank you susan

DreamVoyager: OK, thanks John... Later~~~

Lise: Take care John!

KathG: By John :)

AuntiAlias: since they all had earlier keyframes from first point of duplication!

Schbeurd: Bye John

AuntiAlias: okay, see you John....

MetaJohn: Hi Lise did not see you arive

AuntiAlias: I'll be back for real tomorrow or so

Lise: hihi

AuntiAlias: tho I'm gonna go crawl back into bed and to sleep after this : (

MetaJohn: Bye

AuntiAlias: I think I caught the bug that takes your voice away....

makes typing in chats much easier than speaking! : )

Lise: Thunder again, see you later. eeeeeeeeesh!!!

DreamVoyager: Speaking of voice... BT using PlainTalk? Please?

george: Aunti....the tip regarding the DTE through the TE....depressing Option and Command while clicking the Pictures in the TE after it's first opened doesn't seem to do anything for me....any ideas anyone?

AuntiAlias: does it bring up an open dialog box instead?

Arby: UK folks did you know Bt offer free local calls for their btinternet customers?

george: Yes

AuntiAlias: I've had that happen to me, too, arrgh. sometimes... I just keep tryi ng. Hang on and let me launch Bryce

Schbeurd: George, the picture "button", not the picture folder

Arby: only at weekends tho'

george: err....no

The picture button? As in the Tab at the top?

Schbeurd: Under "fracta"l and "eroded"

george: AHA!

AuntiAlias: okay.. Im in the terrain editor now

george: Schubeurd just solved the problem

AuntiAlias: and yes, blue button. Picture.. what Schbeurd said! : )

Schbeurd: : )

AuntiAlias: I'll talk you through that cool tip if I can come up with it in two seconds : )

see the C A and B?

george: yes

Sumo: Free local calls? More info!

Please!

AuntiAlias: make sure that only the A part is light and that C and B are dark... Alfa output is grayscale only

george: yup

Arby: see you in bobs room sumo

AuntiAlias: okay...

try this, george

george: ready

DreamVoyager: Hi preston

AuntiAlias: you in the DTE?

george: YEs

AuntiAlias: you know how to get to library?

george: which one? Probably....

AuntiAlias: combination panel, two buttons on the right. It's the upper button. Look

at the text readout to make sure

then....

go and grab the basic triangles one.. in first category

george: okay

AuntiAlias: (this is just for a starting place)

AuntiAlias: you can't get to Brycetalk from that textures library, which is why I'm telling you all of this now)

george: Whoa...completely have no idea where you are right now....my polgies

AuntiAlias: k

DreamVoyager: rehi kathG

AuntiAlias: combination panel. the one in lower center.

george: maybe later....I don't want to take up the time we have here.....

aha

yes

KathG: knocked myself off <g>

george: now ai see

sorry

AuntiAlias: has buttons on the side.. look like watch winders or soemthing

george: yes

Oh

'I see

AuntiAlias: coppery one that's top right says "Texture Library"

george: basic triaglr

AuntiAlias: got it?

tan and red triangles

george: yes

AuntiAlias: it's just a start!

first thing:

george: (always wondered how to get in to that from the DTE)

Ready

AuntiAlias: on component 1, click C A and B

will turn C and B dark, and A light

george: Done

AuntiAlias: you see black and white triangles

george: Yes

AuntiAlias: k

you're okay for the type of output to Terrain Editor

now need to have the right kinda noise!

george: Okay

AuntiAlias: Click stone next to noise on the bottom

brings up that noise slider

george: gaussioanNoise editor is open

gag...ignore the gaussian part

AuntiAlias: k

hang on. let me join you there

george: Okay

Schbeurd: brb

AuntiAlias: change noise type from Triangle to this:

(gotta find it first)

george: (fractal makes for good rocks.....)

AuntiAlias: Vornoi D2-D1

george: gotahcha

ohhh.....thats nice....

AuntiAlias: now

george: stained glass!

AuntiAlias: increase the octave to 1 or 2

george: done

(2)

AuntiAlias: change mode to irregular, or more irregular

george: moreso

(no visible effect when changesd to more irregular)

AuntiAlias: it's slight, I think

george: okay

AuntiAlias: okay, just for grins....

george: i trust you : )(

AuntiAlias: click the check to leave noise editor

and to leave DTE

george: oho

very nice

AuntiAlias: takes a bit to apply... but works okay

maybe click equalize

george: (is there a correlation to frequency and to distance in bryce units?

AuntiAlias: and then leave the TE

Schbeurd: AA, you MUST post the log :)

AuntiAlias: I'm now reducing height (y axis)

and will rotate on X, I think to make wall stand upright

george: yup yup

got a very nice rocky wall : )

AuntiAlias: yes....

okay....

for variation number 2

Schbeurd: Just have to try this later

AuntiAlias: duplicate the wall

george: k

AuntiAlias: Make sure you're in object space

and then increase its width

george: (along Z)

AuntiAlias: yeah.. I'm trying to do a few things here... tweak tweak

okay, now I have longer wall, with light from above and behind so I can see the detail

but you see how the stones sorta got elongated?

george: right

AuntiAlias: you can mitigate that by the way that you adjust the noise in the DTE

george: (playing with frequency right now)

AuntiAlias: I'll make a duplicate of it and play with frequency

okay, looks like you're set

of course, I added a little secondary noise in component 2 to average ibn with the rocks from the first, to roughen things up

george: ick

definately not the X axis

: )

Schbeurd: AA How can I create some kind of "fur" or furry texture ?

george: Y azis it is.....

AuntiAlias: wait! you DO increase frequency on the X axis!

it's squashed here.. but will stretch out later in the elongated terrain

yo won't see result until render

george: I went to object space.....then into the TE...then into the DTE.....stretched first along the Z with no results visible...Then along the X....got some strange mashing in the rendered view....then on the Y and it seems much better

AuntiAlias: but when I had that AHA moment during Bryce camp I was inordantly pleased with myself! ; )

george: I tried twice with x to make sure...and set it back to 100 when I went to x.....very cool trick btw!

AuntiAlias: depends how much you changed the width of the terrain. I just about doubled the width

anyway, it certainly gives you some basis for experimentation!

I gotta go folks.....

george: I probably was looking at it backwards or something

Thanks much!

AuntiAlias: and for those who were talking about posting the log

george: Can I ask one quick quesiton!

AuntiAlias: YOU can save the log, you know!

george: Do you know what level bryce lops off the terrains at in order to create a lattice?

AuntiAlias: click that little green floppy disk icon

on the right

simple click willsave text file

Schbeurd: Done AA :)

AuntiAlias: and an option-click or an alt-click will create a HTML file! : )

george: save any colors too if I am not mistaken that way

AuntiAlias: george, at whatever level you set for clipping in terrain editor

true, george re: color

george: by default tho....since it isn't a very precise controller...

Schbeurd: AA, next week topic ?

AuntiAlias: don't know, george

george: Okay...thanks anyway!

Arby: skies would be nice

AuntiAlias: re: next week's topic.. I took suggestions last week, was thinking of arranging either a Q&A with developers if they can make it or one of the other requested guests...

I'm certainly open to any of your ideas tho!

shout 'em out! :D

DreamVoyager: Developers would be great

Schbeurd: Textures : How to create animal textures : Lizard, dragon, fur...

KathG: I would love a fuller explantion of posistioning the cameras

Schbeurd: But ok for developers too : )

george: great tip for positioning lights precisely....

AuntiAlias: positioning of cameras and developers might be possible in fell swoop.. Brians' been on vacation and I'm technically on vacation till tomorrow

george: position your camera in the spot where you want you light to shine....

AuntiAlias: oen tip for lights

george: then copy it's matrix and past into the matrix of the Light

AuntiAlias: target your light (if it's a spotlight) on the object you want to shine it on

george: voila....instant light source pointing in the area you want

heh....that too I guess

AuntiAlias: see p 94 of the manual

george: : )

AuntiAlias: I covered it there

in that tutorial

can move light all around and it will always shine on the intended object

Schbeurd: When does your book come on the shelves AA ?

AuntiAlias: I've got no definitive date to tell you; it's definitely later this year....

DreamVoyager: AA: BTW... one of my B4 projects is animating my "RiverBend" scene... (included on the CD of your second book... I am Per Nordin, incase you didnt know)... Iv been working and reworking that scene... made over 100 versions of it...

finally now I am totally saticefied with it... (well almost.... hehe) I have a vague memory of mailing you one of the final B2 versions a year ago. But now in B4 it is developing further...

AuntiAlias: Per!! it's YOU!

cool!

DreamVoyager: (^-^)

BTW... PeechTree has SATILL not sent me my copy... ;-/

AuntiAlias: hmmm

DreamVoyager: Iv decided to order it at Amazon

AuntiAlias: send email to me at susan@auntialias.com

DreamVoyager: OK

Per@LonelyArts.com

AuntiAlias: seems that there was a problem with it being lost. I'm a little under the weather so whatever I gotta do this week will get done more slowly than usual. : /

DreamVoyager: My "per@nordin.com" does not work anylonger... the mails bounce, but the sysop there says it works...

AuntiAlias: anyway, I think I need to crawl into bed and take a nap again (fooey on getting sick, bleah!)

DreamVoyager: LOL NP, Susan

Arby: gotta go folks, look forward to the next one. bye

DreamVoyager: me too... I rarely get sick, but today I feel feverish

KathG: Well i must go..Thank you for all the great tips Nite everyon .:)

DreamVoyager: OK, later Arby

AuntiAlias: sleep sleep sleep! : )

Schbeurd: Bye Arby

AuntiAlias: till next time!
