BryceTalk Novice Q & A, June 3, 1999
part 2

PullMyFinger: Newbie question: B4 crashes whenever a br4 file is loaded !! help

Shadow^One: i think so cc

Shadow^One: good one yoj

ccasady: you have to move them in position. : )

MetaJohn: Robokeneko your turn

robokoneko: This is similar to Caridad's -I used a Bryce tree (palms mesh) and rendered with volumetric world. The parts of the mesh that should have been invisible showed through like shadows. Any solution?

MetaJohn: If you have a question type ? and I will add you to the list

PullMyFinger: ?

ccasady: !

3d~?~elf: <hi ales>

MetaJohn: Queue is Quick gdsmyth, Pull my

Chris you are great!

Yojimbo: thanks Chris and John that cleared that one up for me

ccasady: I've heard of this problem: I believe it 's solved by setting the refraction index to 100

MetaJohn: Ales the question is This is similar to Caridad's -I used a Bryce tree (palms mesh) and rendered with volumetric world. The parts of the mesh that should have been invisible showed through like shadows. Any solution?

robokoneko: refraction of the mesh material?

Yojimbo: the texture

/material

robokoneko: thanks - I'll try it.

ccasady: Ales knows this I think

ahole: Hmm

I am not sure if i understand the problem right

MetaJohn: If you have a question type ? If you have a solution type !

H20rat: ?

ccasady: A ghostly transparency when the image is supposed to be transparent

ahole: You need to turn the blend transparency on

ccasady: isn't it a refrraction anomalie?

Ah!

ccasady: and where is that?

Yojimbo: That and the ambience may need to be lowered as well

robokoneko: blend transparency with refraction at 100?

ahole: However there is a render problem if you're with in volume world

ccasady: Yea, Roboko

MetaJohn: OK?

ahole: If Blend transparency is on, the refraction is not being used for the material evaluation

robokoneko: I guess it is the volumetric - no prob without it.

MetaJohn: Quick your turn

robokoneko: thank, done.

ahole: You should be able to set the ambiance to anything you want

Undo...Quick!: Quick me? or Quick somebody else?

MetaJohn: You

Undo...Quick!: Okay.

MetaJohn: Queue is Pull (who I think left) and then H2O

Undo...Quick!: I want to bend things. For example, a sailboat's sail....triangular, thin, billowing in the wind.....or....

....a winding road....or a railroad track.

ccasady: !

MetaJohn: Sounds like a fish question Chris

Trimax: greetings all

MetaJohn: Hi Trimax

Shadow^One: hey Tri

ccasady: Don't think of bending an existing object, think of modling in grays

Undo...Quick!: Tell me more.

H20rat: I don't think Bryce's modeller is powerful enough to cause gizmos on mesh files... Bending a mesh would be a 'gizmo' action

ahole: !

Yojimbo: !

ccasady: Right, that's true. So use gradation in B&W terrains as curves

Trimax: hahah i see u know 3d max H20

H20rat: hey Trimax

<G>

Baument: :) I was thinkin same thing tri

Trimax: hey Ed zup

Baument: life is a gizmo

Trimax: ditto

Undo...Quick!: I think I get the idea, but I'm not sure.

MetaJohn: Chris you typing?

H20rat: hehehe maybe I should use the word 'mesh modifier'

hehe

Trimax: depends where u move the point

ccasady: I have an URL

I was surfing!

http://www.tilenut.com/ojai/images/bent.html

MetaJohn: Ales?

Trimax: hey ED any new models lately

ahole: I was just gonna say that indeed you can not bend mehses in Bryce

MetaJohn: This is bryce Newbie night for Q & A

Trimax: what u trying to bend

Undo...Quick!: Say a sail for a sailboat.

H20rat: If you are trying to do this in Bryce

Undo...Quick!: Flat cloth, filled with wind.

H20rat: best way is to deform (pull and stretch) a ball

ahole: Undo...Quick! did you to see the url Chris posted?

Trimax: well perhaps some one really nice could just make one for u to import <GRIN>

H20rat: then boolean

ccasady: A sail on a sail boat can just be a super blurred grey shape

H20rat: to try to get the shape

Trimax: or even a lattice

ccasady: here's the end result, http://www.tilenut.com/ojai/images/

MetaJohn: Check that out

Undo...Quick!: Okay. I can bool. I was hoping to keep the mesh complication down a bit.

ccasady: there's something I "bent" with grays

JeffP: ccasady:Do you use TE or another App to create the grayscale?

ccasady: Bryce doesn't do that

Yojimbo: It should be a fairly simple gradation Quick

H20rat: cool way to use textures instead of complicating a mesh...

Undo...Quick!: was that URL your example, CCasady?

H20rat: good idea ccasady

ccasady: yea

Shadow^One: nice fish

Trimax: with time and paeints u can create any thing with bryce

ccasady: exactly.

3d~?~elf: <like to catch a couple of those!!!>

Yojimbo: hehe

MetaJohn: WaterRat you question?

Shadow^One: (lol)

Undo...Quick!: I'll check it out.

Trimax: ok Meta A Q

ahole: !

MetaJohn: Ales?

H20rat: will there be a patch for importing 3ds files... all my meshes I make then import seem to have flipped faces - I have to turn all textures 180 degree x axis

ahole: I am not sure if it was said here yet,

Trimax: when can we expect a patch for adding directories for textures

ahole: but you can go to the webpage from the chat, just by clicking the posted underlined URL

Tri probably in 5

H20rat: well MJ?

MetaJohn: If you have a questin type a? Trimax you are on the list

Trimax: ?

H20rat: will there be a patch for importing 3ds files... all my meshes I make then import seem to have flipped faces - I have to turn all textures 180 degree x axis

Undo...Quick!: CCasaday.... thanks. That's a HUGE help in bending things.

MetaJohn: Ales can you respond to H2O?

ccasady: : )

!

MetaJohn: Chris

ahole: H20 i don't know what you're saying

ccasady: can I add an URL?

http://www.tilenut.com/ojai/tshow.html

MetaJohn: You did!

H20rat: when I model a mesh file then import it

ccasady: few more grayscale ideas

ahole: 3ds file does not have any texture information which Bryce would use

H20rat: i always have to turn my texture maps

180 degrees on the x axis

ccasady: Try Ales' technigue!

H20rat: i believe the faces may be flipped

on the mesh files

ahole: Where do you get your texture maps?

H20rat: i make them

with painter 3d

on meshes created in Rhino or Max

ahole: Then flip them in the picture editor before you import them to Bryce

H20rat: exported as both obj

Lise: Bonsoir!

H20rat: no ahole...

MetaJohn: Hi Lise

H20rat: it's the face on the mesh

ahole: huh?

Shadow^One: hey lise

Yojimbo: allo List

Lise

H20rat: it loads a texture 180 around

Trimax: on a 3ds it depends how the modler mapped the object

Yojimbo: can't type

H20rat: ie wrong side

3d~?~elf: <some new ideas from BC, chris?>

H20rat: of the face

Yojimbo: (again)

ahole: But 3ds does not load any textures....

Trimax: it can

H20rat: i know

i apply them in bryce

Trimax: i have a stoplight with colors already added

Trimax: i colored them in 3d max and the colors export to bryce

H20rat: i use parametric

MetaJohn: If you have a question type a ?

H20rat: yes colors do

I think the faces on the meshes when imported invert the uv texture data

Undo...Quick!: ccasaday.....awsome. I really must start to think outside of my box.

H20rat: in bryce

Undo...Quick!: Thank you.

ahole: If you can send me an small object with a texture so i can look at it.

H20rat: ok

Trimax: http://members.tripod.com/~b3d/

H20rat: i will make a wall with the number 1 on it

H20rat: can files be offered on Btalk yet?

MetaJohn: No H2O

H20rat: ok

i will upload it to my server

Trimax: ?

ahole: Cool.

MetaJohn: Why don't you continue this with ahole off line? your email ahole?

ahole: aholecek@metacreations.com

MetaJohn: Cool, Trimax you're next

H20rat: ok

thanks

MetaJohn: If you have a question type a ?

and I will add you to the list

Trimax: ok when will that patch be out so we can add directories for more textures

Undo...Quick!: ? <--- a new one

H20rat: ahole u don't work in customer service with a name like that do u?

Trimax: mine are kinda full

Undo...Quick!: lol, H2O

ahole: Yeah i am the boss

H20rat: hehe

ahole: :)

MetaJohn: He write Bryce H2O

3d~?~elf: lol

Yojimbo: lol

Shadow^One: lol so are mine tri, good question

Trimax: takes me five minutes to scrol thru each one

MetaJohn: There is no official date for the patch but it will be very soon

Trimax: hehe

wioll that be added

will

H20rat: ?

MetaJohn: Quick your next question

Rat you are next

H20rat: ok

Undo...Quick!: Can I do multiple "undo" operations? It doesn't seem to be possible.

gdmsynth: ?

Trimax: well see ya all alter

Yojimbo: cya

ahole: !

H20rat: later Trimax

Undo...Quick!: ...nor does the book say it's possible.

Shadow^One: cya'

MetaJohn: no Quick that is not possible

ahole: No only one level of undo is possible in Bryce.

MetaJohn: Rat?

H20rat: ok more directed towards updates

Undo...Quick!: Okay..... then I have another ? when my turn comes up again.

H20rat: will we ever see a bones system in bryce

MetaJohn: OK Quick

H2O I never say never...

but not soon

H20rat: ok

3d~?~elf: !

MetaJohn: elf?

3d~?~elf: John, maybrejust to let people know that future looking q's won't be answered here?

to keep it in focus for new users?

MetaJohn: Right we can not commit to the future, lets talk about now!

gdmsynth: ?

MetaJohn: gdmsynth

gdmsynth: I can find no mention in the manual of the AML menu selections under the triangle to the right of the Preview Window under the memory dots.

H20rat: http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/6966/warh.avi first bryce animation - you can see I need Bones or IK

gdmsynth: For example, what are:

Snap to Frames?

Realtime Linking?

Link Timescale?

MetaJohn: Ales you want to do this one?

ahole: Yeah

MetaJohn: thanx

ahole: Snap to Frames does exactly what it says

gdmsynth: Like a grid?

What snaps?

ahole: All the movement of the scrubber and keyframes will snap to the actual frames in the animation

Steve Lareau: Wheee!

Yojimbo: whee!

gdmsynth: I see.

ahole: Realtime Linking is for slower machines

MetaJohn: If you have a question please type a ? if you have a solution type a !

Steve Lareau: Hi gang- fell asleep waiting...

Shadow^One: later all its been real.....

Yojimbo: cya

ahole: If you turn this off, the updates will not happen in real time, but rather after you finish your edits

MetaJohn: Bye

3d~?~elf: ?

gdmsynth: K...

MetaJohn: elf you're next

3d~?~elf: is there a 'break away' for slower amchines to faster?

ahole: Link Timescale will conect the scale of your timeline from the main UI with the scale of the timeline in the AML

gdmsynth: The duration?

3d~?~elf: on the real time linking...what determines slower?

ahole: The scale is just a display thing.

MetaJohn: We are still on gdmsynths question elf

gdmsynth: The viewable area?

ahole: It modifies how much of the timeline can you see on the screen

Ringo: Hello.

gdmsynth: I see. Is there a way to max this out?

Undo...Quick!: Hi, Ringo

gdmsynth: To use the entire viewable area?

Steve Lareau: ?

gdmsynth: Dragging is tricky and never complete.

ahole: No unfortunately the UI is constrained to the size as you see it.

gdmsynth: OK. Thanks Ales. I got another one later.
