AuntiAlias: 3D elf.. you're on! 3d~?~elf: several parts: the image was generated with pre-released Bryce 4? is it [nearly] a real location? and what exactly is it that gives your imagery it's super realism the resolution? or extra work on the textures themselves, and what can you share about rvanderlippe is off to render mirrored spheres. 3d~?~elf: those tweaks Kalaar wants to play too. mmurphy: 1) It was done in Bryce3D. B4 wasn't ready yet. hybrid disappears in a blinding flash of smoke. mmurphy: 2) No, it's not a real location. It was actually based on a previous image of mine. Betty is off to render mirrored spheres. Steve Lareau wants to play too. mmurphy: 3) For realism, Sometimes it helps to pull at the field of view a bit and make those terrains HUGE! I find it really works better with the atmospheric effects. (many thanks to Susan's book!) AuntiAlias: Queue: knog, cboswell, MadMap, CyberCurt, cboswell, AuntiAlias, Yojimbo, Dreamweaver, Clay, Ringo, nacho Brixpix saunters in. Betty has finally arrived. Steve Lareau: Sorry, I'm back. God, I HATE this chat window- it hangs up SO often! Argh! 3d~?~elf: thanks, and thanks for being an inspiration to us all...done Brixpix: hello Yojimbo: :) FastTraxx: wb Steve Brixpix: lol AuntiAlias: knog, it's YOU! knog: Murphy, how did u do the rays in 'Sun Rays'? mmurphy: 4) Tweaking...hmmmm. I try and make my textures as detailed and high frequency as i can. Does that help? Clay: ?! ( after mt que i have a statement:-) 3d~?~elf: yes, thanks Martin AuntiAlias: we're having Q & A.. if you have a question, please type ? mmurphy is our guest mmurphy: done. egypt: ? AuntiAlias: sorry, I got a bit ahead. knog is next, the question is a few lines up, Martin Brixpix is off to render mirrored spheres. mmurphy: Knog, the sun rays are two HUGE cones! The cones have the preset called: ... beam or ....alien beam (ahhhh, it's been so long I can't remember!) or teleport or something like that. I put them... NickCody slinks out. Bob Van Ess is off to see the Wizard. Dreamweaver has just left. mmurphy: inbetween two (once again HUGE) cloud sheres and that was about it. done. AuntiAlias: cboswell, it's your turn! : ) cboswell: I love your skies and "soft, soft, soft" clouds. Your Queen image is also very soft. Any *softie* tips and tricks you can share? : ) knog: thanx mmurphy: YES! Although some people might think this is "cheating", I always soften up... AuntiAlias: Q & A Queue: MadMap, CyberCurt, AuntiAlias, Yojimbo, Dreamweaver, Clay, Ringo, nacho, egypt Batbat has just entered. mmurphy: my shadow edges with the Just Add Water brush in Painter. Most real shadows are quite soft at the edge and this helps give the image an extra sence of realism. done. Batbat slinks out. AuntiAlias: MadMap, you're ON! :D MadMap: Thanks for being here martin! What sort of scaling do you use on the mountain scenes? i.e. are the mountains designed at the default size or scaled. Also, do you find using higher resolution maps makes a noticible difference for the mountains? Steve Lareau is off to render mirrored spheres. mmurphy: The mountains are 512 X 512 pixels and so large that I can't find the origional groud plane when looking from the top (because it's soooo small) Steve Lareau saunters in. Steve Lareau: Argh! Back after another reboot.... Yojimbo: :O mmurphy: ...also Slee has just left. mmurphy: do you mean "image maps" for the mountains? If so I don't use images for the terrains, just the DTE. MadMap: i meant the image size (512 x 512 was the correct answer) ;-) mmurphy: cool! AuntiAlias: CyberCurt, you're on!! : ) CyberCurt: ? Do you feel that you can keep your "creative edge", now that computers can render faster. AuntiAlias: Q & A Queue: AuntiAlias, Yojimbo, Dreamweaver, Clay, Ringo, nacho, egypt (If you have a question, please type "?") mmurphy: POWER POWER, GIVE ME POWER! I'll try! Yojimbo: :) MadMap: lol Steve Lareau: ? (and I swear I won't crash when ya call on me this time!) MadMap: speed != creativity AuntiAlias: Okay, then... my turn! :D I've found that there's something about the completeness of a 3D rendered image which ends up being misleading for clients .... ....they find it hard to understand that this rendered image is still a *rough* Have you had any experiences like that, and if so, what's that been like for you? mmurphy: Faster computers should help the creative edge! No time to wait for the computer to do it's thing. Ohhhh ya Aunti. Many times. ...I've learned that if a client isn't familiar with 3D graphics... I have to put WORK IN PROGRESS from one end of the image to the other. If I don't, they think it's done. (because to them, it looks done.) Yojimbo: ;) mmurphy: THEN, they understand. ...they don't realize how easy it is to shuffle around objects and render again. They just see a slick, finished image. done. MadMap: do they understand that "work in progress" is not part of the design? ;-) AuntiAlias: Yojimbo, you're ON! :D Yojimbo: Thanks so much for talking with us Martin. mmurphy: LOL Yojimbo: I have two parts: 1) How did you create the Glacier in your "The Drifter" image and give it that wonderful reflection. http://tor-pw1.netcom.ca/~m.murphy/drifter.html mmurphy: Thanks Yojimbo Yojimbo: 2) Where can I find the queen image? mmurphy: (I have a secret about that image, I'll tell you in a sec)... Yojimbo: :) mmurphy: The Glacier... was two symetrical lattices made from one airbrushed Photoshop image. The two lattices were lumped together and given a slight reflective texture. Yojimbo: hmmm.. nod AuntiAlias: Q & A Queue: Dreamweaver (oops, not here anymore, so we'll skip...), Clay, Ringo, nacho, egypt, Steve Lareau (If you have a question, please type "?") mmurphy: (now the secret) When the entire image was done I found it too fake looking... ...too verticle. So I dragged it into photo shop and squished the entire image down to give it a more "stretched out" feel. Yojimbo: ahhh MadMap: ? mmurphy: (I did the same thing with another image as well, but you have to guess which one) CyberCurt: ? mmurphy: done. AuntiAlias: Clay-- your question (and comment, right? if so, please include with question!) Yojimbo: Follow up there was a part 2 Clay: 1) Martin I know you have used 2D planes and pict images for cloudscapes mixed with cloud spheres, like I do sometimes, (for when you can't get that "just right look") could you explain how using "shortcuts" like that speeds up the creative process? I just want to say that when I first started using Bryce, Martin was one of my first contacts on how to use it, and he never hesitated about helping me out on what I should do, when I had questions. Thanks Martin! You are one of the best! mmurphy: oooops! Hang one Clay.... Clay: spill? LOL mmurphy: The queen image? It's at http://www.interlog.com/~mmurphy/queen.html Yojimbo: many thanks\ mmurphy: okay, Clay...whoo it's a long one...hang on.... Clay: LOL mmurphy: (blushing, clearing throat) thanks Clay AuntiAlias: lol Clay: :-) Yojimbo: :) technoid: 8o|) mmurphy: I'm not so sure it "speeds up" the creative process, it just makes it a little easier on me and if the image needs it...it needs it. The clouds in Autumn took about as long to "fix" than it would have if I had done them in Bryce. Clay: yep yep mmurphy: (Autumn=Autumn Flirts with Winter) Does that help? Clay: for me it does:- mmurphy: he he he, done!
