BryceTalk—Meet Martin Murphy, May 20, 1999
Part Two

AuntiAlias: What is the most important thing from your traditional painting background that influences how you work with Bryce?

mmurphy: Three things...

Line, Form and Dynamics.

Morpheus: ummmmmm how doe sline fit in

mmurphy: These three things were taught to me at OCA and they work with...

every job whether it's a landscape or a corporate logo

Morpheus: does line can't type oh sorry shouldn't either

AuntiAlias: (psssssst! Morpheus!!!

we'll have a general Q & A later... I'm sorta doing this like Terry Gross' Fresh Air, only it's Fresh BryceTalk.. you'll get a good chance to ask your questions later on!)

mmurphy: Morpheus, every image has line...or "a" line

Morpheus: thanx shuting up now

AuntiAlias: : )

mmurphy: It really does. You just have to subconciously show it to the viewer (

rusty is off to see the Wizard.

mmurphy: (please forgive any spelling errors)

Vman has left the building.

Yojimbo: ;)

mmurphy: line=movement. Every image has movement

AuntiAlias: it's part of the medium, martin! Would you tell us about line with, say the BRyce box image (since everyone here *has* seen it)?

mmurphy: Easy.

Actually, ...

Grog is off to save the world.

mmurphy: before I type this I will be refering to the entire image at: http://www.interlog.com/~mmurphy/brybox.html

Yojimbo: 404

AuntiAlias: 404

george: 404\

ccasady: 404

Clay: 404!

george: heh

Morpheus: ditto

george: echo

Clay: LOL

mmurphy: hang on! I got the wrong url!

Clay: PING!!!!

Yojimbo: <chuckle>

george: http://www.interlog.com/~mmurphy/bryboxco.html

Clay: ah

Yojimbo: bingo

george: : )

ChaMelEon: bad address

AuntiAlias: uh... as you were saying...?

Morpheus: ah ha! the game is afoot

mmurphy: thanks george!!!!!!!!

egypt: Even better than on the box!

george: np

mmurphy: yes, bryboxco.html

Morpheus: much so

mmurphy: I wanted the line to start in the front and take the eye up the mountain and then into the clouds.

swirl around the clouds and back down again

Reflash: is it live or memorex ??

mmurphy: that's why all the clouds are going in one direction

Morpheus: some kind of line

MetaIan disappears in a blinding flash of smoke.

Clay: it's murphy shhhhhhhh

hybrid saunters in.

Gerry has just entered.

Morpheus: i meant that li.....shutting up

mmurphy: Yes, Reflash, I think I have mentioned that before, but it really works!

mhough wants to play too.

AuntiAlias: Martin, was there anything else you wanted to tell us about *line* and this image?

cause if you're done with line, please tell us about *form* :D

mmurphy: I guess that's about it.

Morpheus: yes please do sorry

griegel has just left.

hybrid is off to render mirrored spheres.

hybrid saunters in.

Reflash: sorry, but I actually meant the image is very alive

ChaMelEon: ?

mmurphy: Form. It's that look of 3D or solid shapes.

cboswell: MHough, http://www.interlog.com/~mmurphy/bryboxco.html is the image under discussion. :)

Ringo: Excellent work mmurphy!

mmurphy: Heavy weight with objects (and gives weight to figures)

Heather: I have to leave now, but I want to tell you that this single picture is what sold me on Bryce4. It's beautiful!

Gerry slinks out.

Clay: refer to your museum Armor Martin....???

about weight..

mmurphy: The structure of objects is form.

Thanks Heather!

mhough: I know that picture. :) Nice to see the whole image.

Heather has more important business elsewhere.

AuntiAlias: How does working with *form* differ with, say, painting a 2D image of a 3D subject with working in Bryce where you are creating 3D form?

Betty has more important business elsewhere.

mmurphy: With 3D objects you have to concentrate on the objects texture.

Betty wants to play too.

ChaMelEon: mmurphy, have you ever designed a texture?

mmurphy: Giving it life by asigning it...

the perfect color and bump so that the viewer can "feel' the object with their eyes.

Descendere has finally arrived.

griegel wants to play too.

mmurphy: ...with a 2D painting...

Clay: Martin , if I may intrude, here is weight and structure at it's best: http://www.interlog.com/~mmurphy/armor.html

mmurphy: you have a flat surface to "copy" from a 3D object. You don't get to play with it's environment.

Gerry has just entered.

Gregg has left the building.

AuntiAlias: You've discussed line and form ..... tell us about dynamics, Martin

mmurphy: Dynamics. I think the most difficult one.

Gerry is off to save the world.

Kronic has just entered.

mmurphy: Dynamics is mostly about composition. Giving the objects in your image ballance and interest.

...so that the entire image feels comfortable to look at.

AuntiAlias: How does Line differ from Dynamics?

mmurphy: Line takes the eye into and around the image, dynamics is the overall ballance

AuntiAlias: a matter of focus and background?

mmurphy: yes

AuntiAlias: Do you think that there's something about working on a canvas that is, say, as tall as you are (!!).... and what's entailed to fill that canvas with a drawing, and with paint ....

3d~?~elf: <glue to make/have the viewer linger>

AuntiAlias: . all the physical motion involved... is there something about your experience working at that size that influences how you approach your work in Bryce?

Dreamweaver has finally arrived.

mmurphy: well, on a work level, working at a computer is much easier physically!

No canvas to stretch and arm reaching!

hybrid: Mr.Murphy ... Do you mentally visualize your images or are you inspired in reality?

mmurphy: that's a hard one Aunti, I'm not sure that the two have too much of a physical connection

...a mental one, yes, but not physical. I (being the lazy one I am) enjoy...

sitting at a computer rather than having to bend or stretch for hours...

working on an area of a large canvas. I always need...

a week off after spending two or three months on a painting.

rgross saunters in.

ChaMelEon: Try painting set backdrops

mmurphy: ...mind you...my neck is DONE after a week at the computer putting together

a 3D image.

AuntiAlias: : )

Before we open things up for general Q & A, let's go back to the Bryce Box cover image...

mmurphy: I'm sure we are all the same.

sure

AuntiAlias: Tell us about the mountain scene that became the image for the box cover.

Were there things you had to do to change the scene so it fit specific print specifications?

kmohamma wants to play too.

mmurphy: Yes. I was given specifics as to how much sky Meta needed...

I think 60% sky was required ( for the Bryce title)...

also, because there was going to be type at the bottom of the box I had to make sure that there was a...

bright area at the bottom -one third in from the left-so it can be readable.

...also, under the trees needed to be...

soft and white. I had to go back in and find that exact area of that terrain and soften it. That was tricky.

AuntiAlias: How did you do that?

ChaMelEon: were you required to do it all in bryce?

mmurphy: Trial and error, mostly.

...I had to airbrush

kmohamma: did you do it all in bryce ?

mmurphy: part of the terrain.

Yes, it's all Bryce

ChaMelEon: as opposed to photoshop

AuntiAlias: so airbrush in the terrain editor, you mean?

mmurphy: I had to smooth some cloud edges...

kmohamma is off to render mirrored spheres.

rgross: ?

mmurphy: in Photoshop afterwards and give the treees some more needles (because it was going to be such high resolution). but

it was , I guess, all done in Bryce.

Yes, Aunti, airbrush in the terrain!

AuntiAlias: : ) Let's open it up for specific Q & A (and many thanks all, for your patience watching during the first half! :D)

Before we get underway, I've got an announcement:

mmurphy: (almost missed that one!)

Morpheus: ?

Bryguy: ?

AuntiAlias: Next week: Live From Bryce Camp

Calyxa: woohoo!

AuntiAlias: Two weeks: Newbies Night! People new in Bryce ask questions, experts answer!!

Also -- June begins Tuesday Events for Europe evenings!

KPT John: Cool

Jeffric: woohoo !

AuntiAlias: Also June will see a 2- week series of work along with me in the DTE!

Reflash: ?

ChaMelEon: farout

mmurphy: Whoooo hooooo!

AuntiAlias: so....

Yojimbo: neet

KathG: great :)

Yojimbo: neato even

Pegasus has left the building.

mmurphy: wow

george: neato

AuntiAlias: take 30 seconds, Martin and stretch your fingers!

ChaMelEon: frying pan now....

AuntiAlias: and then we'll begin Q & A

Yojimbo: Muhahaha

AuntiAlias: If you have a question, please type

?

Bryguy: ?

Ringo: ?

mmurphy: (you mean wipe the sweat away)

AuntiAlias: I'll keep track of the queue and call on you (hint: type your question out beforehand so all you hafta do is press return when I call on you!)

JeffP: ?

knog: Murphy, how did u do the rays in 'Sun Rays'?

AuntiAlias: Let me scroll back and check out this queue and we'll get underway! :D

Yojimbo: ?

Steve Lareau: ?

mmurphy: ...back in a sec

3d~?~elf: ?

knog: ?

rgross: what was the size and resoultion of the box image?

AuntiAlias: queue rgross: Morpheus: Bryguy: Reflash: Bryguy

Ringo: JeffP: Yojimbo: Steve L, 3D and knog

rgross: ops sorry

AuntiAlias: thanks, rgross, yes, you're ON! :D

rgross: it was suppose to be delet hehhe

ccasady: Murphy is stretching

Yojimbo: He'll be right back

Slee has just entered.

rgross: ok:)

Yojimbo: We hope

mmurphy: ..back!

Yojimbo: hehe

MonkeyT has left the building.

rgross: ok my turn?

mmurphy: yup

NickCody materializes from thin air.

AuntiAlias: Raye, once again with your question, please! : )

rgross: what was the size and resoultion of the box image?

AuntiAlias: Queue: Morpheus, Bryguy, Reflash, Bryguy,

Ringo, JeffP, Yojimbo, Steve L, 3D elf, and knog

Morpheus: Okay, god, so many questions. I'll limit myself to just to a small and large one. 1: How long do you work on a bryce image for? 2:How did you do those clouds? BTW since I had some extra time I looked through your gallery and loved it!!

oh sorry

mmurphy: The size is exactly what you see on the box (12" high) and the res was 300dpi

Suddenly Javert appears.

rgross: thanks

hybrid: ?

AuntiAlias: Morpheus is next, and the question is there, above

Morpheus: guess you can see mine now haha

Javert: IS mARTIN HERE?

Betty is off to save the world.

cboswell: ?

Yojimbo: yes

Betty materializes from thin air.

Javert: cool

AuntiAlias: We're now in Q & A... if you ahve a question, please type ? and I'll add you to the ?uestion ?ueue ; )

mmurphy: Morp, I take longer than I used to because...

MadMap: ?

CyberCurt: ? Do you feel that you can keep your "creative edge" now that computers can render faster.

Dally has more important business elsewhere.

AuntiAlias: Queue: Bryguy, Reflash, Bryguy,

Ringo, JeffP, Yojimbo, Steve L, 3D elf, and knog, cboswell, MadMap, CyberCurt

Bryguy: morpheus got to my question first

mmurphy: I have so many projects on the go I don't have the time i used to for Bryce. I want to make evey image count. So about 2 days to a week (sometimes two weeks.)

Calyxa has left the building.

Bryguy: nevermind

mmurphy: I'm sorry, who's next?

AuntiAlias: ?

Reflash is next

Reflash: when you said assemble it all together when creating a scene, is there a way to save individual objects then work on them in Photoshop, or whatever, then bring them back into Bryce for assembly into a scene and render ???

Yojimbo: ?

hybrid: Do you mentally conceive your images or are they inspired by reality? Do you get creative block

Morpheus: ummmmmmmmmmm I'm confused

Bryguy is off to see the Wizard.

Morpheus: oh well ?

hybrid: oops

Javert slinks out.

rvanderlippe has joined the party!

mmurphy: I make one object at a time using evey program I have. then "merge" the objects together at the end.

Dreamweaver: ?

Reflash: followup:how do you savbe individual objects?

mmurphy: Is that what you asked?

Reflash: save

mmurphy: Save them in their own scene with no ground plane.

Morpheus: Hey how come he gets his second question awnsered and I don't?

AuntiAlias: (when you're done, Martin, say 'done', or if you asked the question and got the answer, say 'ok')

Reflash: thanks

mmurphy: done!

Morpheus: K

AuntiAlias: uh, Morpheus, I"m confused isn't a question....

Morpheus: sorry

AuntiAlias: Ringo, you're on!

Morpheus: now i had a second Q in my initial thing

no not now can't type ERRRRRR

mmurphy: Morh, the clouds were cloud spheres tweaked to death!

I find that...

Descendere has left the building.

mmurphy: removing the specularity helps give them a softer look

Ringo: Sorry next.

mmurphy: done.

trayser materializes from thin air.
