BryceTalk Tips & Tricks, May 13, 1999
Part 3

AuntiAlias: Kevin!

Kevin: Is there a way to apply different pic textures to different sides of the same object. For instance a cube with a wood pic texture on one side and a stone texture on another, etc, etc, etc?

MonkeyT: Watch your math when setting the XYZ coordinates. Stick with the powers of 2 and use difference a lot.

Sky Pilot: If you have B4, try JPGs instead of TIFs>Antonio

AuntiAlias: different picture textures to different sides

NexTekCarl has finally arrived.

Calyxa: booleans... thin laminates... Peter Sharpe's 'photo cube' tutorial... but all of those would need more than one object.

Rodney: How would yopu do that, Susan?

AuntiAlias: my first thought is this: use ABC and use some orientation means of getting textures on there

but that won't necessarily map 1 texture per side of object

Rodney: I always ended up with multiple objects.

Mhyper: cylender wrap around a cube AA?

AuntiAlias: yeah, I've done that using 2D planes that are carefully laminated onto cubes

Clark/CDS: agree with Rodney - multiobjetcs/faces

KK22: could you use lights to "project" images on to the sides?

AuntiAlias: laminated using precision option-arrow tpas

Sky Pilot: Light gels?

KK22: yes

Kevin: Ive used multiples before, other apps let you texture polygons but not bryce

beowulf is off to save the world.

Rodney: Lights spread and... what happens when other objects get in the way?

NexTekCarl is off to save the world.

Kikuchiyo saunters in.

Calyxa: and a light would be an 'extra object'...

Sky Pilot: Use parallel light source

KK22: true

Rodney: Kevin, cubes and other Bryce primitives have no polygons

Clay: and it wouldn't be a nice deep color

AuntiAlias: well.. there are some ideas....

dawn: they have 6 poygons...

l

Rodney: Unt5il they're rendered they're mathematical distances described from center

AuntiAlias: We're talking about materials and the DTE... tips and tricks! if you have a tip,, please type !

Kevin: thankz guys, seems like i threw out a stumper

3d~?~elf: what about applying texture to cube, duplicate edit to 2d plane, select origional cube apply texture, and repeat?

Rodney: Bryce just doesn't work that way, Kevin... bunmmer

AuntiAlias: Clem... you ready with your tip/question?

go for it!

Clem: When was/is Bryce Camp and are there any plans to tape it for those of us who cannot attend?

MonkeyT: LOTS of tape.

AuntiAlias: Bryce Camp is SOON! the week after next

Mhyper: good one clem

3d~?~elf: LOL

Calyxa: 10 days, whee!

AuntiAlias: and there are a coupla spaces open still!

tilenut@aol.com

dawn: what is it?

3d~?~elf: too far away

AuntiAlias: don't ask about tape

SHOW UP!

:D

Calyxa: and i noticed there's a BryceTalk event scheduled to come from camp, live!

Mhyper: :)

Clay: LOL

3d~?~elf: cool

dawn: how much to attend?

AuntiAlias: dawn, check out http://www.tilenut.com/ojai

JeffP: ?

Calyxa: $675

Clem: I'm in Wyoming and dang near broke

AuntiAlias: yes, 2 weeks from tonight, you can partiicpate in the biggest type-tp-type fest that ever was

dawn: thank you....

AuntiAlias: 30 computers in a room

with Brycers talking about what we've been learning

and everyone else worldwide

dawn: SGI's

Mhyper: alright!

AuntiAlias: it should be something between highly interesting... and ... pandemonium! :D

Calyxa: iMacs.

Kevin is off to save the world.

Clem: Peace all. Bye

Clem disappears in a blinding flash of smoke.

AuntiAlias: regarding taping of sessions, I think that the logistics required for doing it all made it kinda prohibitive

oh, Clem left...

Journeyman has finally arrived.

AuntiAlias: but that's not final word, just what I gather from what I have heard

um...

I believe that I'm next

: )

Mhyper: Go AA!

AuntiAlias: ---------------------

a brief intermission

---------------------

Free for all suggestion time:

What would you like to see in upcoming BryceTalk events?

Danny has more important business elsewhere.

AuntiAlias: (also is a good time for bio breaks for event hosts)

so.. throw out those ideas!!!

Clay: or BEEER!

get a beer and be happy!

rvanderlippe has left the building.

tommy is off to see the Wizard.

rvanderlippe has finally arrived.

Journeyman: I cant say we are really missing anything in brycetalk events

we get to talk with MetaC staff

and fine artists

boru: Suggest Bryce/Poser synergies

JeffP: Poser/Bryce tips and tricks...

Rodney: Robert brought back after a good night's sleep to further dissect the AML

Clark/CDS: Steve Cooper on Poser stuff

KK22 is off to save the world.

MonkeyT: Get Loa9 to talk about lighting scenes.

Clay: hi Janak

Journeyman: hi CLay

Clay

Rodney: Monkey, Bill don' do BryceTalk

AuntiAlias: So..... Poser? Poser/Bryce synergy, AML

Clay: http://www.phase2.net/claygraphics/test_page_2.html

Rodney: I've tried to get him

boru: I'd like to see another chat on animation lab

Clay: new image Janak

AuntiAlias: one more question: how about Newbies Night?

Journeyman: looking now

AuntiAlias: where the Q&A is from newbies and all of us who are not-so-newbie can answer the questions?

robokoneko: Here's a vote for Newbies Night!

Journeyman: is this all bryce by any chance?

Rodney: Well... JMan.... this *IS* BryceTalk

Mhyper: I second it

screwhead.com has finally arrived.

Journeyman: Newbies night?

AuntiAlias: Journeyman, what do you mean?

Clay: all but the T-rex:-(

AuntiAlias: any suggestions for any BryceTalk events... toss 'em out!

Calyxa: Clay's new image, I think...

Journeyman: I was talking about clay's picture

screwhead.com slinks out.

Journeyman: <hides in the corner because everyone is looking at him>

Calyxa: no way, Clay - the ferns?! the trees?!

AuntiAlias: oh!

Clay: oh yeah those too:-)

AuntiAlias: Here's anidea I had

Clay: hehehehe

Calyxa: whack!

LaurieAnn wants to play too.

AuntiAlias: we get a round table discussion going

.a discussion panel

Clay: OOOOWWWCH!

AuntiAlias: and talk about the Bryce Creation process

a more esoteric thing than just technique

what say ye?

Journeyman: would this change the future of a Bryce 5 at all?

robokoneko: yes yes yes

Calyxa: sounds interesting

AuntiAlias: any more suggestions for BryceTalk events?

boru: You mean you have a process?

Journeyman: Sounds like good ideas Susan

3d~?~elf: what about one night intensive single subject 'talkies'

Clark/CDS: what is art? how to make art?, etc...eh?

Clay: yeah it does

AuntiAlias: boru, whetehr it's an official one you think of beforehand, or the one you see, in retrospect you went through, some sort of process does exist somehow

Jamie is off to see the Wizard.

AuntiAlias: 3d... sounds interesting.. what intensive single subjects you have in mind?

Calyxa: I have a couple different processes...

Journeyman: Well I have to go now, I just stopped by to see if there was anyone on at all at night :-) I guess there is. have a good night all

Ringo is off to render mirrored spheres.

boru: Generally I just throw whatever against the wall and see what sticks

AuntiAlias: you mean like Tonight is Terrain Night?

Journeyman: bye

Journeyman slinks out.

Clay: cya

3d~?~elf: well, your tut the other night would be in that catagory, DTE...MT TE

AuntiAlias: or Tonight is Sky Night?

Calyxa: boru, that's one of them. the other is that sometimes I do start with an actual "plan"

Clay: mmmm skies

Rodney: Off to intellectualize a process for rendering mirrored spheres, all. I enjoyed it.

AuntiAlias: yeah.. I'd like to try that sometime.. tho I don't know that i can lead a group of 30 people through a step by step

still, it's worth a shot

Clay: cya ROd! heheheh

Rodney is off to save the world.

AuntiAlias: mebbe in June we can do that

okay....

--------------------

end of intermission

--------------------

Clay: shhhhhhhh

AuntiAlias: : )

Any last tips and tricks on Materials? DTE?

Someone else shout out one so I can go after you (requires a bit of typing)

Calyxa: !

AuntiAlias: then....

rvanderlippe: !

AuntiAlias: we'll move on to Animation TIps and Tricks afterwards

3d~?~elf: !(repeat(

Calyxa: use pale, pale colors for transparency when making colored glass.

Pyewacket disappears in a blinding flash of smoke.

AuntiAlias: Calyxa, rvanderlip, AuntiAlias, 3D elf

richard, if Calyxa says she's done, you go next

Calyxa: done

JeffP: ?

Kalaar saunters in.

rvanderlippe: Found a neat use for distance origin noise - flowers

MonkeyT has just left.

rvanderlippe: Since it radiates outward - works well for materials

http://www.vanlippe.com/new/flower.jpg

just a really quick example

AuntiAlias: how do you map the object? object space?

rvanderlippe: object space

Here's another http://www.vanlippe.com/new/flowers.jpg

Hard to explain in detail - probably take a while

Calyxa: oooh, like that one. are those terrains or meshes?

rvanderlippe: meshes

AuntiAlias: that would make a great Project!!

Mhyper: lilies

AuntiAlias: (for the Meta web site for community/projects)

rvanderlippe: yea - gonna try to show more at BryceCamp

AuntiAlias: cool!

done for now?

rvanderlippe: yup!

AuntiAlias: k.. I'm on

when creating new procedural textures

you always start with an existing one

for instance, Basic Altitude

but when you go to the DTE and change things around, you click OK in DTE and come back to the Mat Lab

and you have a different looking texture whose name is Basic Altitude

If you're into SAVING your newly created/ajusted textures from DTE

Blue Max disappears in a blinding flash of smoke.

AuntiAlias: use the Library in the DTE to do so

BUT! you still have to go and select the newly named texture in the Materials Lab

Mhyper: ahhh....

AuntiAlias: if you don't, and you end up for some reason going and unselecting that texxture and reselecting it

suppose, for this example, we're talking about Basic Altitude

you lose whatever changes you had made to it

adn the old standby Basic Altitude comes back

and you lost your work

so

LaurieAnn is off to see the Wizard.

AuntiAlias: #1) add texture to library in DTE

#2) make sure to select that new texture in the Materials Lab in the texture source area

#3) when you 're inevitably re-adjusting that texture in the DTE

(and you will, again and again and again... trust me!)

you gotta save it in the library again and again if you want to keep that texture as a texture permanently

done

who was next?

Calyxa: 3d

3d~?~elf: just furthering the application of multiple textures on cube, the convert cube to 2d plane x 6 works pretty easily

AuntiAlias: 3D elf, you're on!

3d~?~elf: done

Calyxa: have you seen Peter Sharpe's 'photo cube' tutorial? he uses 6 pyramids -- easier to line up the edges without gaps.

AuntiAlias: JeffP

JeffP: How about some ideas on using DTE for making terrains in TE?

AuntiAlias: hmmm.. that definitely is an area to be explored... you got any ideas,, Jeff?

3d~?~elf: < is more math intensive' for sum of us...>

Calyxa: here's the URL for the photo cube tutorial - http://www.petersharpe.com/Tutorial9.htm

AuntiAlias: DTE to create terrains: maybe a BryceCamp exploration time... (ask at the chat in 2weeks time!)

hmmm

Mhyper: there was a Cmd-Cntrl pic button in TE that went directly into DTE

AuntiAlias: wow.. the idea of creating a rotoscope in DTE for Terrain is interesting, for sure

just pondering the implications....

such as.

JeffP: I am looking for a place to start exploring..

AuntiAlias: if you have a terrain at Time^1

made in the DTE using blah-diddy blah noise, etc

and at Time^2 it's changed by whatever effect (also from DTE)

then is it just a grayscale canvas morph, or an actual texture morph from DTE?

my guessis grayscale, but it could be verrrry interesting

Calyxa: I'd guess grayscale also, as you would exit the DTE and save the keyframe from the TE

AuntiAlias: I'm in the terrain editor now...

what is the key combination to evoke the DTE (Mac) from the Terrain Editor?

Calyxa: only use A (value) output, don't bother with C (color) and B (bump) outputs from the DTE when generating terrains.

AuntiAlias: comnand-click / control-click / command-control click don't work

aah!

Calyxa: click on the 'picture' button

AuntiAlias: TIP!

Mhyper: sorry, just checked Cmd-Opt pic is the one

Calyxa: while holding the key combo (which I'm not sure of...)

AuntiAlias: when working in DTE, work first looking only at your textures in grayscale mode

have only the A button lightened for the texture

(what you see is opposite/inverse of what you see in Noise Editor, alas!)

Kalaar is off to save the world.

AuntiAlias: but look atthe grayscale information

Suddenly H20rat appears.

AuntiAlias: also, when you add color to it, for color output, first thing to do is use high-contrast color

Descendere: Hey H2O.

AuntiAlias: such as black, red, white

H20rat: hey Des

AuntiAlias: then when you like what you got, then you can select more subtle colors
