Danoe: there high lited text :) Calyxa: I like the city in the background, Pete, but the cars look too much like ketchup bottles to me (sorry!) Danny is off to render mirrored spheres. AuntiAlias: ::::::clearing throat::::: ::::smiling a big grin :D :D :D :::: :::making eye contact with everyone in the room :::::: (!!) Danny materializes from thin air. AuntiAlias: Welcome to Tips n Tricks, part 2!! Here's how we do things tonight. Danoe: ahhh xochi: ? AuntiAlias: We'll continue what we did a couple of weeks ago, which is to take Bryce section by section.... tonight we'll talk about materials, DTE, Animation, Advanced Motion Lab, working with other software, Rendering Rodney has finally arrived. AuntiAlias: I'll call out a category. If you have a tip for that category, please type ! Rodney: Howdy y'all Pete: Hinz 57 or hunts Bryguy saunters in. AuntiAlias: Then I'll call on you and you can share your tip (that way we don't step all over one another) Danoe: eye contact scares me ;P AuntiAlias: so.... (lol Danoe!) how about we start with Materials!!! Danoe: I like Aunti :) AuntiAlias: If you have a tip for Materials, please type ! (silence?) Jeffric: don't all rush now !!! NewbieJohn: <sniker> AuntiAlias: If you have a tip for Materials, please type ! Danoe: silence hurm... AuntiAlias: ! Calyxa: I can't think of anything I do with materials that I can type in two sentences or less... AuntiAlias: okay, I'll call on me Danoe: look at all of the !'s :) AuntiAlias: Susan, go ahead: Thanks, I think I will Danoe: ha Blantyr materializes from thin air. AuntiAlias: When working with textures, I always begin by clicking in the A column to bring up any Procedural texture then I go from there to select a texture that I want Extra Tip: Shift key on Texture Source name brings up a pictoral dialog of Texture Library Calyxa: ! AuntiAlias: or else I go straigh tto the DTE I guess I'm priming the pump with that one Danoe: woo I see a ! :) AuntiAlias: Calyxa: what's your Tip? Calyxa: I have a tutorial on using ABC mode to create good marble textures at http://www.best.com/~calyxa/pearl/materialtut/marbleabc.html Pete has more important business elsewhere. tommy materializes from thin air. Danoe: I go to my book marks list :) AuntiAlias: (if you just came here, we're talking tips and tricks for materials... if you have a tip, please type !) sfshook has more important business elsewhere. AuntiAlias: good, Calyxa! I saw it a while back when I was looking at your site Monday during the Journeyman chat unKelly materializes from thin air. beowulf has just entered. Calyxa: thx Danny: I have a tip for exporting terrains to other Apps But I will wait AuntiAlias: Materials tips? Materials Tips? Tricks? don't be shy! Jeffric: ! AuntiAlias: Jeff! Rodney: ! desdanova materializes from thin air. AuntiAlias: You're on! Jeffric: if you're working on a PC with gamma correction ON don't set the ambient level to much more than 12 otherwise materials start to wash out and appear too bright in the shadow areas Suddenly dawn appears. AuntiAlias: ! Queue List: Rodney, Me Suddenly Cricket appears. AuntiAlias: Rodney, go ahead! Rodney: If your objject is going to be used in an animation keep the frequencies down. Josephi is off to see the Wizard. Rodney: done AuntiAlias: cool! Susan! Go! Okay, I Will! :D Danoe: ha ha ha AuntiAlias: On ambient setting.... Heather: I went to look but keep losing BTalk, so will look tomorrow. AuntiAlias: to make your objects in the scene all look cohesive make sure that you have IDENTICAL ambient settings for all your objects MonkeyT has finally arrived. Suddenly Pyewacket appears. AuntiAlias: if you are working from material presets, especially.. you might be prone to getting different ambient settings and when you do that... Danoe: yes yes (I'm on the edge of my seat :) AuntiAlias: your objects won't look "right" done Any other Materials Tips? Tricks? Calyxa: ! AuntiAlias: If you have one, do what Calyxa just did! type ! Calyxa: go for it! Danoe: That would explain my mountains looking weird :) Rodney: ! Danoe: ! Cricket: ! Calyxa: use 'basic triangle' as your transparency and use 'blend transparency' mode to soften a spikey terrain for grass. AuntiAlias: Okay.. we got a queue forming Pyewacket disappears in a blinding flash of smoke. Suddenly Pyewacket appears. AuntiAlias: while you're waiting for me to call on you, go ahead and start typing your tip Calyxa: it'll need to be relatively high frequency... done AuntiAlias: then you can just press return when I shout you out! Rodney! go for it! Rodney: This ties in with Susan's tip An object whose ambient is lighter than the general ambient in the skylab will look selfilluminated, good for lights but bad for rocks. done AuntiAlias: : ) Danoe, you're ON! : D Danoe: ok Mines a simple little thing... Calyxa: ? Danoe: learn the difference between the abcd columns and how they work together... (for the newbies and me :) done AuntiAlias: yep... lotta power in the ABCD columns! :D Danoe: hahaha AuntiAlias: you can mix and match a for this, b for that aeryn has joined the party! 3d~?~elf: ! Rodney: ! Danoe: yeah but I never get what I want :) AuntiAlias: if you use AB togehter (control key while clicking in B column will make it work right) NewbieJohn has left the building. AuntiAlias: then A is lower altitude texture, and B is higher alitutde tedture Suddenly Blue Max appears. Blue Max: Hello Folks Danoe: howdy AuntiAlias: ABC works so that whatever the ALPHA in C is the switcheroonie to A and B texturs Cricket! You're on! Cricket: Pictures make good textures too. Don't forget. Some neat ground stuff can be done. sometimes it's best not to anti-alias them...espcially if you've done nice Jungle Bundle ones. AuntiAlias: Queue: Calyxa, 3D elf, Rodney Jungle Bundle, Cricket? please elaborate! Clay saunters in. Cricket: From Garden Hose...all the Garden hose stuff without drop shadows! AuntiAlias: right! : ) Danoe: cric, whats "Jungl Bundle"? (slow typer) |

MetaIan has more important business elsewhere. AuntiAlias: Calyxa, you're on! Calyxa: question on Rodney's last tip, the 'ambience in the sky lab', is that the 'shadow' setting or did I miss something? JeffP: http://www.gardenhose.com Danoe: so does that transfer control to rodney? :P Jamie has joined the party! AuntiAlias: Rodney? Rodney: Ooops... typing in simpletext Heather: That page is a neat example Calyxa - is it copyable? Watto has joined the party! AuntiAlias: (I bet he's typing) Calyxa: the only thing I see for ambient in teh sky lab is a color swatch... Rodney: I think Shadoews is the name of the control boru: I thought Skylab fell in the ocean... Rickstat saunters in. Danoe: ha ha ha Clay: LOL Bryguy: lol Rodney: It's the far left swatch in the Sky edit palette, I think Calyxa: cool, thanks. Heather, you can print that page out for your own use, but you cannot reproduce it and redistribute it. Heather: good gracious never! AuntiAlias: For those of you who just showed up, we're talking about Materials. If you have a tip or trick for materials, type ! Clay: ! AuntiAlias: done calyxa/rodney? Rodney: We sghould have Bryce open when we talk about it I guess... done Calyxa: never know what people mean by 'copyable'... yes, done. Danoe: Calyx what no using your work as my own, thats unheard of ;) AuntiAlias: cause if so.. then 3D elf! Heather: I wouldn't even know who to distribute it to! 3d~?~elf: are we all aware of the access to photoshop filters in "leo" picture editor? (upper right hand triangle) to use on our materials -presets Antonio materializes from thin air. AuntiAlias: Excellent point, 3D! Clay: yes 3d~?~elf: bitte sehen! Danoe: whats "Leo" picture editor? Blantyr: Leonardo Da Vinci Danoe: ahh let me look at bryce... :) AuntiAlias: The Leo Picture editor is the one with the golden man... the one that has the leo picture.. hence the Leo editor sort of a roundabout way to refer to it. Danoe: yeah the "man" by Leonardo Di... AuntiAlias: more formally known as the 2D Picture Editor Danoe: ok get it thanks :) Calyxa: 2d pict editor - accessible from the material lab by selecting a picture in the A, B, C or D texture, then using the DTE button... Danoe: nah I like leo better :) AuntiAlias: or.. more simply "pictures" or Picture room" Danoe: ahh AuntiAlias: I'm in there right now Rickstat is off to save the world. AuntiAlias: I LOOOOOVE SHIFT-T! :D Danoe: I'm in bryce... Calyxa: shift-T rules AuntiAlias: Rodney... you got another one? if so, you're ON! Calyxa: I just wish there was a shift-N to go to netscape... 3d~?~elf: might point out thzat for 1st timerz AA unKelly has left the building. Rodney: To cut the "perfect computer generated colors" look of your objects use a low smog component to drive your texture's diffuse intensity. and another... Antonio: what's "shift-T" do? Rodney: For an interesting effect map an image to the diffuse channel and to the bump channel. Then animate a morph into another image mapped to diffuse and bump but morph the two at different rates. AuntiAlias: queue: Clay Juanaguru wants to play too. Danoe: can i ask a question about the leo editor? Calyxa: shift-T brings you back to brycetalk from almost anywhere in Bryce. Antonio: ahh AuntiAlias: sure.. if you have a question about a topic that we're discussing, by all means.. just pipe up with a ? Rodney: In fact, morphing between textures can help you create a texture almost impossible to program otherwise Danoe: ? Rodney: Just select the texture in the particular frame that looks cool and copy it out done Danoe: ok here it is what is the Black and white image in Leo (the second frame) for (is it transparence? Calyxa: ? aeryn is off to save the world. AuntiAlias: morphing between textures.... does that have anythign to do with that animation of the mothership that is displayed on the website? (from the animation discussion a while back) xochi: <And if you just wanna blather, AA?> <smile> Rodney: Yes and no Calyxa: that's the 'alpha channel' and yes, it's related to transparency, but there are other effects you can do with it. AuntiAlias: queue: Clay, Danoe, Calyxa Calyxa: bump, reflection being two. Rodney: There is a morph between textures but the primary effect is a boolean reveal Danoe: cool :) Rodney: Two Momships and a sliding boolean cutter revealing one Danoe: thanx Mhyper wants to play too. Danoe: bbs AuntiAlias: done, Rodney? Rodney: done AuntiAlias: if so, then Clay! You're on! Clay: I just want to say, ask Auntie what to do on textures:-) I'm done (just kiddin Susan) but she gave us a neat TUT on a rock the other day. oh yeah BUY HER NEW BOOK WHEN IT"S OUT! done Antonio: w AuntiAlias: lol, Clay.. Thanks! Clay: :-) Antonio: AA, when's the new book due? Rodney: ! Danoe: and whats the title? AuntiAlias: actually, I'll be posting that rock log to my website... but I think I'll be expanding it for my session at BryceCamp Blantyr: And will the book be purchasable through the MetaC web site? Heather: I just bought RWB2 and it says to download 2.1 (know that's not newly printed), but 2.1 is unavailable - have I missed anything big between 2 and 4? Clay: cool AA AuntiAlias: er, no... when I say my website in conjunction with my book, I'm talking about my very own website, www.auntialias.com info on the book is there.... (and yes, I have an Amazon site, so if you feel like ordering it from my site, I'd be most obliged!) um, Clay, did you have a *real* tip? Danoe: wee now all I have to do is convence Danoe to buy it:) Clay: no just a thought:-) Antonio: ? AuntiAlias: Danoe, you were next in the question queue.. but I see that you asked and got your answer already... Suddenly lebby appears. AuntiAlias: er.,. by the way, just to keep the chaos down, please only type ? and then wait until I call on you Kevin wants to play too. AuntiAlias: to actually ask the question Danoe: yeah thanks I didn't get the way the "?" worked :) AuntiAlias: it's only (slightly less) confusing that way Danoe: sowwy AuntiAlias: I figured that, hence the reminder. : )
