Meet Gary Lauer, CEO of MetaCreations, May 6, 1999
Part 4

vincehardy has more important business elsewhere.

AuntiAlias: Edo... you're ON!

Edo!: Will future Poser get worldly and include other than average WHITE people. And how about more world control in Bryce like Storm lab or plant lab?... why no expression update?

lharriet has just left.

dawn: storms would be very cool indeed.....

tuckersaur: yes that would be great.

that would be excellent.

JeffP is off to render mirrored spheres.

technoid: agreed!

Calyxa: plantlab!

Gary L: With poser, I assume you are referring to facial features so I'll pass this on to the team-it's a good suggestion

jpladue: I agree on stormlab and plantlab

Dr. Mojo: Stormlab would be..."difficult."

ChaMelEon: Can you say Bloatware?

JeffP saunters in.

dawn: i refuse to buy bryce 5 if it doesn't include stormlab and plant lab...heheh

Clark/CDS: checkout ->Zygotes Poser People addons

Gary L: Bryce: Everything else is on our list; we don't view expression as strategic any longer.

tuckersaur: yeah and lightning is a real cpu burner, eh Ken?

AuntiAlias: tharkun.....you're ON!

Edo!: thanks

tharkun: Sorry about earlier interruption, spastic finger.Has MC thought about partnering with co. like Macromedia for HTML support for Bryce, etc? Plug-in style support/linking? Or is MC looking to move into HTML products? What about phoo realism like in Terragen?

tuckersaur: ?

tharkun: photo realism

Calyxa: hehe

Gary L: Partnering for html authoring is something we're looking to do

DreamVoyager: Bummer about Expression. Its a great program!

ChaMelEon: I liked phoo realisum

JeffP: tuckersaur, if you have a Wacom table download the Pentools plug-in. You can use it in TE.

Calyxa: me too, cam

Gary L: See Canoma for unbelievable photo realism

JeffP: Sorry, "tablet"

AuntiAlias: Queue List: Mcharb, desdanova, Clay, ccasady, tuckersaur... if you have a question, please type "?" ... and if you have a comment, please type "!"

Mcharb.... you're ON!

tuckersaur: I know JeffP - i did it awhile ago

thanks

Mcharb: 1. Soap2, SuperGoo, Kai's Power Show are consumer level products. Do they eventually get upgrades and bug fixes? Or are they just taken off of the "upgrade projects" shelf? 2. Are you sure wa can't convince you about expression?

dawn: Something to give adobe a good butt kickin'

tommy is off to see the Wizard.

tommy has joined the party!

Gary L: I knew the expression answer wouldn't be popular with everyone. No plans to upgrade the consumer products presently; all people in MCRE are focused on our higher end products

technoid disappears in a blinding flash of smoke.

AuntiAlias: desdanova....you're next...

Edo!: (stay high end)!

desdanova: How do you think that the chat went tonight? Interested in sitting in the hot seat again? PS Keep up the good work! (1 hour chat now going on 2 hours)

AuntiAlias: HANG ON A SEC!

ouir intrepid typist needs a break...

so...

fluffy has joined the party!

AuntiAlias: let's take a 1 or 2 minute stretch break

fluffy: i was idle too long ;)

AuntiAlias: breathe in....

ChaMelEon: time for idle chitchat?

AuntiAlias: breathe out

tuckersaur: Okay and then I have a special question....

AuntiAlias: look away from the monitor

roll your head...

Cricket: Open your mail program and grab mail every ten minutes or so...there's always a message coming from the KPT list

Hometime: Render a sky...

ChaMelEon: got a bad coolant leak?

AuntiAlias: avoid those carpal tunnel repetitive stress injury motions

Edo!: chant expression, expression

tuckersaur: about that cool tool I showed everyone a Ghost Ranch last year - hehe!

KPT John: Send me some images

Gary L: I think the chat is fantastic. I didn't realize how much time has gone by so quickly, and I'm happy to stay a while longer. All these questions have been great!

ChaMelEon: I have some steaming epoxy....

ahole: I don't want to know Tuck...

Mcharb: My comment would be that I hope MCRE does not destroy the current price/accessibility of their products. (Value on a HOBBY level is very important)

ahole: ;)

Danoe: ::::nanomeditation::::

MetaBrian: Nor do I want to see your tool

AuntiAlias: ...we got a substitute typist here for Gary...

so

let's take the next question.....

tuckersaur: you'll like this one ales - it doesn't involve Bryce directly!

AuntiAlias: Clay! You're ON! :D

Ringo: One of the be BEST online nights ever. :-)

Clay: I would Just like to say thank you for taking time outta your busy schedule to visit with us Mr. Lauer, and Kudos to you and everyone at Metacreations, you ALL have done an outstanding job! And I'm looking forward to future products.

OH! and I would also like to have a plant lab in Bryce:-)

ahole: I bet it does not Tuck :)

tuckersaur: lol

Cricket: LOL

Calyxa: what Clay said.

Clay: :-

)

Gary L: Clay, thanks for the comments.

desdanova: diddo!!!

tuckersaur: you're gonna kill me when we meet in person ales!

Clay: you're very welcome:-)

Reflash: trees

Danoe: plant lab...yes!

kree: !

Mcharb: !

AuntiAlias: ccasady... you're on!

ccasady: Poser has been described as being the same as just one module out of Alias/Wavefront or some other hi-end app. . But not as deep or powerful. Can you speak a little on this ?

to wit:

Does it naturally follow that Meta applications will increasingly evolve to catch up to the level of technology that say, Maya and Softimage have now, (while they those programs continue to evolve) ? Where does this maddness end?

AuntiAlias: (Queue list: kree, Mcharb.....)

tuckersaur: me too Aunti!

ChaMelEon: Aaromegeddon

tharkun is off to render mirrored spheres.

ccasady: i.e. Will Poser evewntually get there, to where these pro modules are now?

3d~?~elf: the arms race?...theirs are hairier...

AuntiAlias: k... Tuck, I missed you.. you're at the head o the queue...

If you have a question, please type "?" if you have a comment, please type ! : )

tuckersaur: thanks when Chris is done ; )

Gary L: Our objective is not to replace Alias/Wavefront or Softimage apps. These products cost thousands of dollars, and I believe our price points and our performance make our products -- like Poser -- fantastic value. Our market share here is growing fast,

faster than high-end apps.

ccasady: or is it not ever going to be possible on home machines?

AuntiAlias: How about a round of applause for Rob, our typist!!!! He did a wonderful job!!

<clap>

ccasady: I don't mean to compete with them becausae they will evole too

Hometime: yeah!!

tuckersaur: clap!

Jeffric: clappity clap

Cricket: ::calp::

desdanova: <clap>

Sideways: [clap, clap, whistle]

3d~?~elf: encore!

Clay: ClapClapClapClapClap

Calyxa: }{}{}{

JeffP: Thanks Rob

Clay: whistle!

slareau: Rob is typing? I thought it was a Chickun!

Danoe: Bravo!

slareau: <pack> BOK!< pek>

Clay: my cat is typin for me now:-0

ChaMelEon: ClapClapClapClapClapClapClap

Reflash: you rah rob

AuntiAlias: he's been spelled by Betty.... but I wanted to acknowledge him before he slipped out....

tuckersaur: are you done Chris?

Mhyper: Excellent!

ccasady: do I always have to feel amaturish using Poser

that's my real question

Reflash: no

3d~?~elf: ?

tuckersaur: not if its making you money or you're enjoying it : )

Clay: ?

ccasady: okay, just checking.

Cricket: It's what you do, not what you use...and we know what you do, so dunna worry, Chris

Gary L: ccasady, with Poser 4, you should feel less so.

ccasady: Whew, okay. Thanks.

AuntiAlias: Kree, you're on !

ccasady: Yea!!

tuckersaur: Okay here is my tool question:

ChaMelEon: you're all killin' me....

Clark/CDS: ?

Reflash: ?

KPT John: We know what you use Chris also

kree: I think it's a shame to charge people more hard earned money to get e-mail support for products that don't work as advertised.

tuckersaur: you missed me again Aunti!

ccasady: same issues there too tho

AuntiAlias: Sorry... tucker was next... we'll get to your question, kree after Tuck's

Brian Hitney: <--- must get sleep and will read the logs tomorrow. Thank you John Feld, Susan, Gary, and all at MC.. g'nite!

Brian Hitney has just left.

KPT John: CU Brian

tuckersaur: Please don't let Texturescape languish and die - it is an incredible tool and goes way beyond what standard bitmap texture tools do. I use it all the time in Bryce and it makes incredible tiled textures from vector objects - nothing else is like it.

Hamlet saunters in.

ccasady: I agree

Gary L: Tuck -- noted by the Bryce Team.

Edo!: < loves texturescape too

tuckersaur: please take advantage of its unique position in the market and rEv it!

ccasady: stick it in KPT6

jpladue: Texturescape? I missed that tool

ccasady: see?

tuckersaur: it came from Specular

Gary L: Tuck -- sorry... look for news in the Infini-D revision

jpladue: where is it?

tuckersaur: TS news?

AuntiAlias: Kree's question on support....

kree: I think it's a shame to charge people more hard earned money to get e-mail support for products that don't work as advertised...like KPT5

Sideways: I had forgotten about Texturescape - I think the v1.0 floppy's around here somewhere....

Hamlet: Yeah, what happened there with KPT 5. What a disapointment.

Gary L: Kree -- we're working hard to improve the quality. The industry direction is toward fee-based support, and our support is now on-line, not e-mail. We don't charge for bug fixes.

kree: but you charge to find out whats going on

Hamlet slinks out.

ChaMelEon: do I sence some negitive vibes around here?

AuntiAlias: Queue: Mcharb... Clark/CDS, Reflash... Reflash's question is the last one... we're gonna wrap up after that

Clay: me?

Gary L: If you call us and the problem turns out to be a bug, we do not charge you.

3d~?~elf: ?

dawn: I'm not paying for support...I'll get help from one of my fellow Metacreators before i spend one red cent.

Clay: susan ya forgot me:-(

ChaMelEon: ????

AuntiAlias: yes, I missed both Clay and 3D, sorry... you're in the queue.. after Mcharb and before Clark...

Mcharb: My comment would be that I hope MCRE does not destroy the current price/accessibility of their products. (Value on a HOBBY level is very important.< $300.00) Comments? BTW: Poser3 is excellent! (consider additional content CD ala Bryce 4 in P4)

3d~?~elf: (and me)

dawn: someone always has the answer...

ChaMelEon: just being annoying....

KPT John: BryceTalk and the KPT list are great alternatives

ChaMelEon: I agree..

Gary L: Mcharb, I agree on the price accessibility comment. If you like Poser 3, you'll really like Poser 4. And take a look at Canoma, as well.

kree: I bet it's a tolll free call to buy it, what do you want to bet its not to find out whats wrong with it

AuntiAlias: Final Queue: 3D elf, Clay, Clark/CDS, Reflash

ChaMelEon: bad mojo again?

AuntiAlias: 3D Elf

3d~?~elf: can we hear something about hair improvemnet in future Poser?

Gary L: 3D elf, you should see hair improvement in Poser 4.

AuntiAlias: Clay, you're on!

3d~?~elf: thanx

Clay: Is Infini-D being Poised to go head to head with higher-end Products like Lightwave? well that was just answered a few lines ago, (after scrolling back up) "look for the ID revision":-( my bad! hehehehheheh WEll then, what color is your Lexus? LOL

Meta Hawk saunters in.

ChaMelEon: gree I bet

Gary L: Clay, the eight-year old Lexus is faded black.

Clay: LOL

AuntiAlias: Clark..... you're ON!

Clay: thanks just needed to know

Clark/CDS: Whats the approx timeline for Poser4 and ID5 releases?

Edo!: !

Hometime: ID5-ID5-ID5-ID5-ID5-ID5-ID5-!!!

Gary L: Clark, Poser 4 should be in the next month or two, and a rev of ID sometime this summer.

Cricket: and RDS6?

Clark/CDS: ˆ

AuntiAlias: Reflash....... you're on!

jaytee saunters in.

Reflash: that was my question....but comments-- How about free support for a specific length of time via phone, unlimited email support. and thanks for the great chat session and especially the great products. Keep it up! I DO NOT support fee based tech suppor

dawn: biting the hand that feeds them...

Gary L: Reflash, customers are already offered 90 days free support with purchase of our products. Our fee-based support offerings are very similar to Adobe and Macromedia's.

kree: No, paying them

AuntiAlias: Edo... your comment?

Edo!: Just for the record.. I completed a project for a client during this chat using Poser3, Bryce4, Infini-D 4.5, KPT and some other MC stuff... couldn't survive without you! Hurry with ID-5!

Cricket: Just cause Adobe and Macromedia do it doesn't mean... :<

Calyxa: having done tech support, as long as the $$$s go to the support folks.....

tuckersaur is off to render mirrored spheres.

Gary L: Edo! sounds great. I'd suggest adding Canoma to your stable.

Edo!: I am ready! Are you shipping? ;)

Mhyper slinks out.

Hometime: I already have it on order (Canoma)

Gary L: Yes, Canoma is now shipping.

Edo!: Would love to see a demo version.. like to try before I buy

Reflash: It does cost money to maintain a support staff, but is a very unpopular policy

xochi has more important business elsewhere.

ChaMelEon: Gary L - thanks for you time - very enlightening

AuntiAlias: okay....... this wraps things up.....

Calyxa: thank you, Gary!

Sideways: A tip of the hat to Mr. Lauer, and the crew at MetaCreations for tonight's chay -- I really appreciate the chance to talk it up with those who design what I spend so much of my day using.

MetaJohn is off to see the Wizard.

Jeffric: applause, cheers, a hearty WOOHOOO! and standing ovation - that was the most fun I ever had with a roomful of strangers and a CEO - can I go sleep now?!!!!

Mcharb: Thanks!

Hometime: a BIG thanks!!!! ALL!!!!

3d~?~elf: thanks for taking this time, Gary!

JeffP: Thanks Gary

desdanova: Thanks, Super job....

Gary L: Thanks everyone. I've really enjoyed this, and I'm anxious to come back and do it again soon. Thanks for your support.

dawn: Remember Bryce 5 with weather!!!!!

slareau: Thanks Gary! <Clap!><CLAP!>

Clay: Thanks a ton Gary! clapclapclapclapclapclap clapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclapclap

Cricket: Thanks Gary!!!!!!

Edo!: Thanks

Reflash: dawn--you interested in cheap Expression ???

Hometime: whew hooo

AuntiAlias: Thanks to all of you! :D :D :D

prost: Thanks for your time Gary.

dawn: yeah...

tuckersaur has finally arrived.

Hometime: thanks AA

KPT John: gnight

Lise: Merci beaucoup Gary!!!

desdanova slinks out.

Meta Hawk has left the building.

Rodney: G'Luck, all!

Hometime: night john boy

AuntiAlias: I hereby pronounce that all this protocol stuff is ENDED!!

Dr. Mojo: Jeffric: SLEEP IS FOR SISSIES!

Sideways: Goodnight, all.

Clay: thank you Susan for putting up with us all:-)
