Meet Gary Lauer, CEO of MetaCreations, May 6, 1999
Part 2

AuntiAlias: Danoe... You're on!

JFBuckley1: Here's my question:What were the circumstances of Kai's departure?

oops, sorry!

Danoe: Do you envision a 3D "suite" that mere mortals (poor struggling independents) can afford? Canoma looks like a dynamite product that I'm dying to get but $399 is a lotta of missed meals for me...by May 15th ... heh heh....and BTW Metacreations is the BEST.

magister: ?

Gary L: JFBuckley, friendly.

AuntiAlias: Mazrim... you're on!

oops, my bad

Rodney: ?

AuntiAlias: Danoe's question has the floor still

JFBuckley1:

!

Mazrim: I like his question anyways :)

Gary L: Danoe, unfortunately I don't see these price points coming down as a matter of fact, I believe that our prices represent very strong price performance.

Danoe: :::::::::::sniff::::::::

Gary L: lol

AuntiAlias: Mazrim, NOW you're on!

magister: :()-~~~~~~~~

Mazrim: Bryce is wonderful software, along with Poser, but I would like to know if either will be supporting dual processors, or at least have faster rendering engines available. Even on my high end machine, it takes forever to render a simple scene

sepapu: ?

Mazrim: and I have a habit of doing intense scenes to go a long with the rest of my work in 3DSMax and Lightwave

Danoe: (gives you time to sleep Maz LOL)

Gary L: Making significant improvements in performance is always on our agenda.

Mazrim: Sleep? Who sleeps?

AuntiAlias: Queue list: Chameleon, renato!, kpg, reflash, Spike, wscottart, Cricket, magister, Rodney, JFBuckley1, sepapu

Chameleon.. you're on!

ChaMelEon: I believe Metacreations would be the best Company to introduce a new standard in crossplatform compatability with an entirely new 3d format (ie 3ds dfx etc). You have the user base. Any agreement? How is the weather in old Carpenteria? I grew-up there.

Mazrim: cause I also have a dual PII 400, but Bryce takes no advantage, nor of my opengl card

thinkpiece wants to play too.

Mhyper has just left.

VFR750 wants to play too.

Gary L: Chameleon, your comment about crossplatform compatibility is one we are considering and the weather today was fabulous

MetaMeri has left the building.

Gary L: ...In fact it looked like a Bryce scene :)

Clay: LOL

Jeffric: !

ChaMelEon: always did

Mazrim: I do like that you support exporting now, it was a great improvment

AuntiAlias: renato! you're up!

renato!: well, 3d~?~elf kind of asked my question already, but I will ask it and perhaps you may want to elaborate more

Gary, I and perhaps many others don't know about your background. What was the path that led you to be CEO at MC? What's your experience in the software biz?.

Mhyper has just entered.

ccasady: ?

SolidSnake materializes from thin air.

renato!: hi chris

ccasady: SHHHH!

Sideways: ?

Gary L: I spent nine years at SGI immersed in visualization technology. Lots of work there with software developers like Alias, Softimage, etc.

AuntiAlias: Queue list: kpg, reflash, Spike, wscottart, Cricket, magister, Rodney, JFBuckley1, sepapu, Jeffric, ccasady, Sideways

Hometime is off to render mirrored spheres.

Gary L: i was attracted to MCRE by the incredibly powerful visualization capabilities this company hasand I also was attracted by the oppurtunity to work with industry leaders at MCRE

VFR750 has left the building.

VFR750 wants to play too.

Gary L: opportunity

thinkpiece disappears in a blinding flash of smoke.

Hometime saunters in.

AuntiAlias: kpg... you're on! : )

kpg : Re Canoma: have press NFRs gone out yet? I want to write one of the first reviews of it to be published on the Web!

thinkpiece materializes from thin air.

Snoopy: ?

Gary L: Will go out with press launch within the next few weeks

kpg : any date on that?

Gary L: YOu can buy the product now and next week it will be available for electronic download from us directly.

AuntiAlias: reflash, you're on! : )

Reflash: Why no support for older versions of software, such as Bryce 2 ?? there are quite a few folks still using older software.

DanWhiteside is off to see the Wizard.

Gary L: Most of our support efforts are on 3 and 4

ChaMelEon: Can you say cuttin' edge?

Gary L: We support Bryce 2 through our technical support organization.

Reflash: I was told it was no longer supported

Gary L: That's news to me I'll check

AuntiAlias: Spike.... go for it! : )

Reflash: no patches available for download on MC website

Spike: Is there a full blown modeler in the works for Bryce? Also, what about a multimedia development platform from Metacreations? Somthing to take the place of mTropolis? I belive this would be well recieved . Thanks for your time.

Journeyman wants to play too.

MetaCharacter: reflash: bryce 2 never had any downloadable patches

3d~?~elf: (good 1st ?. spike)

kpg : ?

thinkpiece is off to see the Wizard.

Reflash: not true

andyl has just entered.

Bob Van Ess has just left.

paul3d is off to save the world.

Reflash: ver 2.1 was downloadable

MetaScott: sorry, Reflash, that is true ;)

ver 2.1 was a CD

Calyxa: 2.1 was shipped out on CD

Gary L: Spike, no, that's not the direction for Bryce (Full blown modeler).

andyl: Hi All

thinkpiece materializes from thin air.

Brixpix saunters in.

Gary L: Maybe something in the multimedia area

MetaCharacter: I maintain the ftp site, I know what's going on with it. calyxa is correct

Journeyman: do you think one day you might add more modeling tools for Bryce?

Spike: Can't wait!

AuntiAlias: wscottart... you're on!

wscottart: Poser is great and all, but what is Metacreations going to do to get a leg up in character animation and modelling. We seem to have to lean towards other companies products in this area? Thank goodness for the 3ds import in B4!

tuckersaur wants to play too.

Edo! has joined the party!

tuckersaur is off to see the Wizard.

Gary L: Wait 'till you see Poser4 coming soon!

tuckersaur has finally arrived.

AuntiAlias: If you have a question, please type "?" ... if a comment, please type "!" Queue list: Cricket, magister, Rodney, JFBuckley1, sepapu, Jeffric, ccasady, Sideways, Snoopy, kpg

Brixpix: what's new in poser 4 gary?

Gary L: lots! :)

AuntiAlias: Cricket!

go for it!

Cricket: Poser/ Bryce is a magic combo. How far is MC willing to go to make them more integrated?. I'd really like to be able to pose my posettes inside Bryce. Now I go to poser, repose, export, import to Bryce, retexture, re position, render, back to Poser, etc.

tuckersaur: ?

Cricket: Lot of time wasted :< Thanks

Journeyman is off to see the Wizard.

Gary L: We want to go alot further this is a major focus for us. this is all part of an architecture

AuntiAlias: magister... go for it! : D

andyl: ?

magister: will bryce do new os " lunix" and new systems like the new computer amiga coming out in 1st quarter of 2000

tharkun materializes from thin air.

Spike: ?

MonkeyT has finally arrived.

AuntiAlias: Queue list: magister, Rodney, JFBuckley1, sepapu, Jeffric, ccasady, Sideways, Snoopy, kpg, tuckersaur, andyl, Spike

Lise: ?

VFR750: I would like to make a comment about you COMDEX prescence last year. I wanted to show some friends. When we say the booth listed, we went, and got a weird look, as it was for partners only. It was a huge turn-off. I hope this will change.

Edo!: ?

Gary L: No plans right now, but we;re obviously looking at all operating system developments.

AuntiAlias: Rodney! You're on!

Rodney: At one time there was a very dedicated core alpha/beta community for the HSC products. This seems to have faded over the last few years. Convolver was really the swan song for this community.

Do you think accelerated development pressures and the requirements of being a public company are to blame? And if not, do you forsee a resurgence of this "extended development family" paradigm?

Lise has more important business elsewhere.

rvanderlippe has just entered.

Lise saunters in.

Gary L: We have a big focus currently on quality of product development which I think you've seen with Bryce4 Alpha and Beta programs are becoming an important part of this

Wintermute saunters in.

bernie is off to see the Wizard.

AuntiAlias: JFBuckley... you're on!

JFBuckley1: Gary... Bryce is incredibly important to me as an artist and I love the software. I also appreciate this opportunity to speak to you. But I've got some criticisms about Bryce 4...

1

A technical manual should not be typeset in Bodoni... It's incredibly difficult to read, in fact... it appears that the printing is quite poor. Bodoni will "picket" that is, the dark strokes will stand out while the thin serifs fade into nothingness.

dawn materializes from thin air.

JFBuckley1: 2

The manual moving from Bryce 3Ds horizontal to 4's vertical was a bad move as well. What was good about the wide format was that the manual would stay open on your desk and lay flat... not the case with the 4 Manual.

3

It seems to take a really hard "click" to move from the preview of your art, back to wireframe view... this seems quite different from Bryce 3D... and it is difficult.

Otherwise... love your stuff.

Calyxa: (use the esc key to switch to wireframe!)

tuckersaur: tough love...

JFBuckley1: thanx Calyx

magister: open gl

Gary L: thanks, we've got your comments noted.

MetaCharacter: a note about the new manual layout, it's been well received on our mailing lists

The Smoking Man has joined the party!

ChaMelEon: Any shortcut key in ref to question 3? anyone

AuntiAlias: sepapu.....you're on!

sepapu: You've fielded questions about render speed. How about a scanline renderer for Bryce or object specific raytracing?. Also a magazine devoted to bryce would be outstanding.

Gregg: ?

Brixpix: yes a magazine

sepapu: thanks.

Brixpix: i'll buy

tuckersaur: this is the magazine - its alive!

Mazrim: I like the spray paint render, best improvment to bryce 4

Calyxa: esc key, chameleon - toggles between wireframe and render

tuckersaur: or clear key

ChaMelEon: thanks

magister: ?

3d~?~elf: !(also kliking on any tool)

The Smoking Man has just left.

AuntiAlias: If you have a question, please type "?" ... if a comment, please type "!" Queue list: magister, Jeffric, ccasady, Sideways, Snoopy, kpg, tuckersaur, andyl, Spike, Lise, Edo!, Gregg, magister

Brixpix has left the building.

Gary L: Again, we are actively looking at ways to improve performance. Regarding a magazine it's a good idea which we'll first implement on our new website which we hope to have up next week!

Clay: cool!

Mhyper: alright! :)

AuntiAlias: Magister, go for it! :D

magister: is there a way in the future to use 3dfx or open gl cards to render faster?

ChaMelEon: ditto

Mcharb wants to play too.

xochi has just entered.

wscottart slinks out.

thinkpiece has just left.

Calyxa: open gl will let you have a faster preview, but it is only for display - render is cpu-intensive.

ChaMelEon: those card are only for screen rasterization

Gary L: that hardware currently doesn't help Bryce's rendering technique.

magister: damm

AuntiAlias: Jeffric... you're on!

Jeffric: LOL, can you explain "I feel more like the Yankees with depth 2 and 3 deep at every position" for a sleepy englishman who has no idea of what that earlier answer meant? :P

Calyxa: lol!

(I didn't get it either...)

Clay: LOL

DreamVoyager: !?

Lise: ?

tuckersaur: You'd need a dedicated piece of hardware - like powershop was for Photoshop - that card cost around $2,000.00 - that is the price of dedicated hdw.

thinkpiece has joined the party!

JFBuckley1 disappears in a blinding flash of smoke.

Foehammer1 has just entered.

Gary L: yes, it means we have lots of great people across our company especially, in the development ranks. Canoma and Headline Studio are two examples of what our people are up to!

AuntiAlias: Queue list: Jeffric, ccasady, Sideways, Snoopy, kpg, tuckersaur, andyl, Spike, Lise, Edo!, Gregg, magister, DreamVoyager, Lise,

Jeffric: thanks :)

AuntiAlias: ccasady, go for it!

ccasady: Do you think you might do a week long "Poser Camp" when Poser 4 ships , Just like that excellent "Bryce Camp" coming up at the end of this month?

also::

With Kai gone now are you going to be the one who dresses in black and parades beofre an audience at MacWorld like Michael Eisner did for Disney after Walt died? Do you think Meta needs a figurehead or not?

Kikuchiyo has finally arrived.

Foehammer1 has just left.

Wintermute is off to see the Wizard.

Gary L: Poser camp sounds great, and if you'll organize it I'll dance there!

tuckersaur: lol Chris!

Clay: LOL

ChaMelEon: gotta see that

AuntiAlias: ; )

kpg : Re Canoma, again: I don't want to hammer the blindingly obvious, but wouldn't it benefit the firm and consumers by having press NFRs go out just before products ship? Fast-appearing reviews = fast start to sales.

Danoe: lol

ccasady: okay, it sounds like it's going to get to be a complicated program soon, like they all get to be

kpg is off to see the Wizard.

tuckersaur: just the way we like 'em!

ccasady: Poser is on the verge of being a fantasicly useful tool

magister: good nite all

Mhyper: hear hear

ccasady: Can hardly wait for the upgrade

Mcharb has just left.

tuckersaur: sure is

kpg has finally arrived.

ccasady: Thanks,

magister disappears in a blinding flash of smoke.

AuntiAlias: Sideways, you're on!

ccasady: and we don't need a figure head I don't think : )

tuckersaur: lol

Rodney: <did my first Poser art last night... after owning all three versions>>

MetaCharacter: (watch the side-talk, people) ;)

ccasady: answered my own question.

AuntiAlias: Sideways? you still here?

Sideways: There is one annoying Bryce interface problem (one shared with most 3D environments, for that matter) for which I would like to suggest a solution in this forum:

It's easy to lose reference of the X-Y-Z axes with an odd camera angle or complex scene.

I always find myself having to guess what axis to click on in the Edit palette, and I'm usually wrong...1 in 3 odds, House usually wins ;-)

What about having the rotate, move and scale icons in the Edit palette re-orient themselves, live, to match the sel

kyle saunters in.

Sideways: The icons could re-render right into the palette on the fly to not "break" the interface, and would look real spiffy, to boot. It would also help indicate whether the object is in the object's, the camera's or the world's orientation.

On a similar point - it would be WAY cool the have a nano-preview of a scene auto-render in QTVR-space, to let the user spin around in a scene for quick orientation.

SolidSnake is off to render mirrored spheres.

Sideways: [patching in]... to match the selected object?

SolidSnake wants to play too.

rgross has just entered.

Suddenly dickie appears.

Mcharb wants to play too.

Gary L: Sideways, I can't answer that here but I know the Bryce team has seen your suggestion

ChaMelEon: sounds good to me

AuntiAlias: Queue list: Snoopy, kpg, tuckersaur, andyl, Spike, Lise, Edo!, Gregg, magister,

Snoopy.... ask away! : )

Snoopy: Gary: Glad you're with MetaCreations now, but do you think SGI will ever get their act together? I would love to get one of their 320's.

3d~?~elf: ?

DreamVoyager: Forggott me, AA? Before Lise.

Gary L: Snoopy, I'm still a stock holder in SGI so I hope so!

Their 320's look real good

Snoopy: Me too!!

Gary L: ...we have one

Snoopy: Is it great?

dickie: Hi I know sorry I'm late. i9'd love to know if anyone at meta is expanding the dxf/s3d export capabilities?

Baument disappears in a blinding flash of smoke.

AuntiAlias:

kpg, you're on!

kpg : Re Canoma, again: I don't want to hammer on the blindingly obvious but wouldn't it be better to send out press NFRs just before product ships? Fast-breaking reviews = fast start to sales.

Gary L: We have been showing this product under NDA for over 6 weeks but I appreciate your suggestion

ChaMelEon: Is my computer needle skipping?

AuntiAlias: Queue list: tuckersaur, andyl, Spike, DreanVoyager, Lise, Edo!, Gregg, magister, 3d~?~elf

Tuckersaur... go for it!! :D

tuckersaur: I heard a new rev will be coming out for Infini-D YES! In addition to the bug fixes - can you please add OBJ import and allow *3d objects* to be used as particles in that awesome particle engine in there?

kpg : ?

tuckersaur: Also - a bryce ?

Hometime: ?

Gary L: thanks I'll be sure the team gets your suggestion.

AuntiAlias: Tuck... your Bryce question?

tuckersaur: Can you please allow direct import of ID4.x objects into Bryce?

ChaMelEon: big work that...

technoid materializes from thin air.

jcastick has joined the party!

Slee wants to play too.

ChaMelEon: taht was my question...

Heather is off to see the Wizard.

Gary L: It's on the Bryce 5 consideration list

thinkpiece disappears in a blinding flash of smoke.

dickie: dickie is still around

thinkpiece has just entered.

AuntiAlias: andyl... you're on! : )

Slee disappears in a blinding flash of smoke.

Suddenly Slee appears.

andyl: Will Bryce be compiled to take advantage of the G4's altvec when it arrives?

tuckersaur: thank you.

dimension saunters in.

tuckersaur: YES!!! good question.

Suddenly Slate appears.

Snoopy disappears in a blinding flash of smoke.

Gary L: we're looking at it for all products

dickie: any news on additional export plugins?

AuntiAlias: Queue list: Spike, DreanVoyager, Lise, Edo!, Gregg, magister, 3d~?~elf, kpg, Hometime

andyl: ?

Mcharb: ?

AuntiAlias: If you ahve a question, please type "?" if you have a comment, please type "!"

Spike!!!!

thinkpiece slinks out.

Spike: Should we look for a Ray Dream 6? Perhaps with "the interface"? (I like the new manual!) Thanks for not loosing what makes Bryce special. I think youve got some loyalty.

AuntiAlias: if' YOU!

jcastick: ?

AuntiAlias: it's YOU!

Ringo: ?

ghazelwood wants to play too.

thinkpiece materializes from thin air.

AuntiAlias: Queue list: DreamVoyager, Lise, Edo!, Gregg, magister, 3d~?~elf, kpg, Hometime, andyl, Mcharb, jcastick, Ringo

dimension: how do you get on the queue?

Gary L: We're very aware of the Ray Dream community and you should expect an upgrade soon. More info to come.

AuntiAlias: if you have a question, please type "?"

dimension: ok

AuntiAlias: like this:

?

dawn: ?

dickie: I can't tell you what it would mean for us ground breaking boys if you could sort the plug-ins"!"

AuntiAlias: that is how you get here in da queue! ; )

Danoe: or ! for comment ;D

Jeffric: ?

AuntiAlias: DreamVoyager!!!

dickie: cheers

DreamVoyager: Iv used Bryce since B1 and love it. I skipped B3 as I found it buggy and inferier to B2 (MAC) as to material quality and rendering. I kgot B4 2 days ago, and the little Iv had time with it, I love it.

dimension: ?

DreamVoyager: But only having it for 2 days, some of my comments might allready been answered to...

1) interference in water, so the waves "bounce off" or reflect from objects.

2) I just saw in the hand book that we now have "Level of fussyness"... GREAT! Been waiting for htat one!

Lise has just left.

DreamVoyager: 3) Curved sky/horizon... as now, the bryce world is parrallell...

4) bendable planes?

5) VERY IMPORTANT: show the Bryce World boundries... so we know where the baoundries are before we hit it with objects... correcting them can be a big mess!

6) buliding gradient skies, or to be able to place the bradient notches. As now is, it is difficult to make Swedish (Polar) night skies, with crimson horison all arround and truquise to deep chrimson skies at top.

Thats all I can think of now at 5 am min the morning

:-)

Lise wants to play too.

Gary L: DreamVoyager, thanks that's a lot for only 2 days :) get some sleep!

j/k

ChaMelEon: go to bed!

DreamVoyager: LOL... this is my life

ghazelwood: ?

Danoe: LOL

DreamVoyager: this, and naked women

AuntiAlias: Lise, you're ON! :D

DreamVoyager: (when will we see better genitalia in Poser?

kree saunters in.

Lise has more important business elsewhere.

Spike is off to save the world.
