Bryce Animation, April 22, 1999
part 3

ccasady: More AML stuff next time...!

technoid has just entered.

renato!: actually I had an AML ?

gdmsynth: Thanks Robert.

Meta Robert: AML needs an interactive Brycetalk session

Clay slinks out.

AuntiAlias: RG digital, slareau, renato!, tuckersaur, Smoking Man, M'Kell, Carthach, kikyuchiyo.. any of these questions you have for robert?

okay... then renato, we'lll squeeze you to the front then : )

renato!: thx

now?

AuntiAlias: y.3

renato!: AML question: when I did the animation for the DEM tutorial, I tried a re-render where the camera motion was remapped in the AML so that it slowly started up, picked up speed, and then glided to a stop at the halfway point, then sat for the rest of the ani

gdmsynth: Yes. Many questions after we try AML.

AuntiAlias: oops yes

renato!: animation

BUT however much I tried, I could not get the glide-to-a-stop motion perfect. It would jump a frame or two after the point where the camera should have stopped. I mean, I really got in there up close in the graph, and adjusted it...

Hanover is off to render mirrored spheres.

KPT Chuck slinks out.

Hanover materializes from thin air.

justin slinks out.

Reflash slinks out.

Meta Robert: Did you use a motion path?

renato!: I do believe so.

maybe a tension adjustment?

Meta Robert: Be sure you are using a motion path with only two position keys

Jammer: I LOVE Bryce 4.0!!!!!!!!!!!

slareau is off to render mirrored spheres.

technoid: Ditto

renato!: and a quick followup if you please: when I option click the graph, lines appear... these are tangents?

Meta Robert: I believe so...

j_lehmkuhl: Rodney, cool QT animations on the site.....

gdmsynth: I tried using motion paths and when I panned the camera everything became jumpy.

Rodney: thanks, John

RG digital: ?

renato!: thx 1x10^6, I yield the floor

tuckersaur: renato - You have to create a new keyframe at the end of that sequence where the camera is completely still - then it will stop smoothly

renato!: OK

AuntiAlias: RG digital, you're on! :D

Meta Robert: Track an object with the camera for focus... make it invisible

Jammer slinks out.

RG digital: Where is the bank command for animating? I just tried and couldn't get it to work

Meta Robert: Use ease in and ease out on teh tracked object

gdmsynth: Yes that worked much better.

RG digital: does Bryce do it automatically or what?

Meta Robert: If you set the camera aligned to path on a motion path it will bank

Rodney: Dunno, I rotate the camera.

gdmsynth: Manually?

vincehardy: Gotta go everybody thx susan, rodney, robert

Rodney: I'm a luddite, brute force sorta animateur

RG digital: thanks, I'll try that.

Meta Robert: But it's not the best way

kyle has finally arrived.

AuntiAlias: QUEUE LIST: slareau, tuckersaur, Smoking Man, M'Kell, Carthach, (type your questions so you can just hit return when I call on you)

If you have a question, type "?"

Meta Robert: I would do it manually too

More control

rgross is off to see the Wizard.

oblio: ?

vincehardy is off to save the world.

Meta Robert: I would like to develop flight models for the cameras

AuntiAlias: slareau, you're on! : D

Hanover: There is no autobanking, you can bank your camera by going to camera view and using the banking tool.

AuntiAlias: oops, sorry

I jumped the gun

Mindcrime: ?

tuckersaur: that would be great - Robert - but EPS import of paths would help out too

AuntiAlias: done with the banking yet?

RG digital: thank you!

yes

AuntiAlias: okay, *now* slareau! :D

Rodney: EPS import! YES!

Meta Robert: tuck Agreed

tuckersaur: Bryce 5 hopefully

Meta Robert: also for text extrusions.. but... it's landscape or is it?

Rodney: OK, Steve, whaddaya want?

stiffkat: LOL

tuckersaur: did he bail?

AuntiAlias: hmmm. he might've

Rodney: Doesn't seem to be in the list

tuckersaur: my question then?

AuntiAlias: yes, he did

k

slareau saunters in.

AuntiAlias: there he is

Hanover: haha

AuntiAlias: steve, you're ON!

Meta Robert: Okey I'm falling off my chair here... need sleep :)

Rodney: Oh no! The complete AOL experience recreated!

slareau: Related quickie- when stretching via scaling, will that also move and adjust any hard keyframes?

AuntiAlias: thanks, Robert!!

ricster41 slinks out.

tuckersaur: yes

Rodney: All the way down to the Dreaded Punt Monster!

slareau: (This thing crashed- bah!)

oblio: what is the best way to go about constructing an animated (looped) QTVR scene? i understand that this can only be done thru QTVR Authoring Studio. does one render (say) 60 panoramas and stitch them toegther, or

Meta Robert: Yes slareau

gdmsynth: Thanks again Robert

oblio: ""sorry...cat again

AuntiAlias: k

ccasady: Sleep Robert..... Meanwhike I'll practice all my new linking skills

Meta Robert: Take care all... render away

Jeffric has left the building.

AuntiAlias: Tuck!

stiffkat: thanks robert

tuckersaur: my turn now??? cool

Kevin: thanks robert

AuntiAlias: I beleive you were next

Hanover: gnite robert

Meta Robert: I look forward to seeing all the cool stuff you guys do!

RG digital: Thank you Robert!!

JeffP: Bye Robert

tuckersaur: for Rodney : when I render 15ps into pict seq and bring into after effects at 15fps, the animation project only creates a length of 8 seconds - what gives?

Meta Robert: Bye

Meta Robert is off to see the Wizard.

Rodney: G'nite, B-Man

justin has just entered.

gdmsynth: Wonder what else Robert didn't tell us?

jplapointe has finally arrived.

justin: is it over?

ccasady: yea.... I'm wondering too

AuntiAlias: no.. rodney's typing an answer to tuck's question

Rodney: I missed something in that question, Tuck

stiffkat: hmmm, it's like candy, too much at once is overkill :)

tommy: ccasady, you get my mail?

stiffkat: at least I tell myself that

ccasady: I think he has other cool tips

AuntiAlias: how many frames total, tuck?

gdmsynth: Rodney, do you mix and match PCs and Macs while rendering?

AuntiAlias: whoa!

screwhead.com saunters in.

AuntiAlias: tuck and Rodney have the floor!

: )

justin: aa:where will this all be posted when its over?

tuckersaur: here it is again - when I render 15ps into pict seq and bring into after effects at 15fps, the animation project only creates a length of 8 seconds - what gives?I set the amin to the full 16 sec in the preference too. it is over 240 frames - let me check

Hoot has just entered.

mhough: dumb ?

Rodney: Tuck, AE defaults to 30frames per second. Did you reset to 15fps?

Suddenly Kronic appears.

AuntiAlias: an aside while rodney and tuck type....

http://www5.metacreations.com/products/bryce4/talk/events.cfm

stiffkat is off to render mirrored spheres.

tuckersaur: yes i did - it is also 234 frames long

AuntiAlias: has the links to logs, AND links to movies that Rodney's been working on

Tom B. saunters in.

Rodney: Import the pict sequence, then go to File: interpret footage. See if it says 15fps or 30

gdmsynth: There is an AE list that can answer AE questions.

tuckersaur: there is no fps on the import as dialog

zman52 slinks out.

Rodney: Right. So import the sequence.

justin slinks out.

Rodney: It will probably say 30fps.

interpret footage and reassign the fps to 15

AuntiAlias: QUEUE LIST: Smoking Man, M'Kell, Carthach, Mindcrime, mhough, (type your questions so you can just hit return when I call on you)

If you have a question, please type "?"

smurfboard wants to play too.

oblio: ?

Kikuchiyo: ?

tuckersaur: composition is set for 15ps

technoid: ?

tuckersaur: fps

slareau has left the building.

AuntiAlias: QUEUE LIST is *now*: slareau, tuckersaur, Smoking Man, M'Kell, Carthach, oblio, kikuchiyo, technoid (type your questions so you can just hit return when I call on you) : )

Rodney: Tucker... highlight the file in the bin, select File:Interpret footage:Main

Hoot: Does reducing the FPS make the ani slower? After I get a an animation rendered, it goes too fast.

gdmsynth: ?

smurfboard disappears in a blinding flash of smoke.

Clark/CDS: bye all

tuckersaur: interpret footage is the kicker -that fixed it Rodney!

Clark/CDS disappears in a blinding flash of smoke.

AuntiAlias: sorry my bad re: queue list.. Smoking Man, you're on!

tommy has more important business elsewhere.

Rodney: But of course, mon ami

The Smoking Man: Thanks but nevermind, I answered my own question. The Motion tests look good, look forward to seeing more of the movie.

tuckersaur: lol

mon ami

mhough: Did I get bumped from the queue?

Rodney: Good? The motion tests look GREAT

AuntiAlias: QUEUE LIST: Smoking Man, M'Kell, Carthach, Mindcrime, mhough, oblio, kikuchiyo, technoid, gdmsynth, type your questions so you can just hit return when I call on you)

Kevin: night all........thanx for all the great tips. It was a pleasure to meet you Susan & Rodney

The Smoking Man: You're right of course

Rodney: well.... maybe Very Good...

AuntiAlias: ; )

mhough: Nite Kevin

renato! is off to render mirrored spheres.

The Smoking Man: Didn't mean to downplay it. I'm actually very impressed with them.

Kevin has more important business elsewhere.

AuntiAlias: M'Kell, you're ON!

M'Kell: What's the best way to keep MOV files sizes down? All mine seem to be around 2 to 5 megs for 15 secs. I render to BMP seq.(Output to at 320 by 240) then import to Premiere then output as AVI and MOV.

renato! saunters in.

Bodhran has just left.

Rodney: M'Kell... that's about right for file size. If you need a smaller file for web or transfer

use a lossy codec like Cinpak or Sorenson.

Or drop the framerate or frame size.

slareau wants to play too.

tuckersaur: or get moviecleaner pro

M'Kell: Which is best frame rate for web?

Chippro is off to see the Wizard.

tuckersaur: 10 fps max

slareau: (crashfest- sorry!)

AuntiAlias: Can I get this one?

Rodney: I like 12fps.

Go for it Susan!

tuckersaur: elitist! rodney ; )

RG digital: mmmmmmmm...crashes....

screwhead.com has left the building.

AuntiAlias: Was in MediaCleaner Pro to set up movies.. It does a good job of suggesting rates/sizes/framerates for you

www.terraininteractive.com

or

www.codeccentral.com for more information on the stuff from Terrain Interactive

(makers of Movie Cleaner Pro)

Ringo is off to see the Wizard.

AuntiAlias: k (done)

Rodney: Susan, www.terraninteractive.com not terraIn

M'Kell: Ok.. thanks.... :)

AuntiAlias: oops

thanks! : )

slareau: LOL!

ccasady: (Movie Cleaner Pro is very cool)

renato!: VERY

rvanderlippe: dns still fails

renato!: actually it's terran.com

Rodney: Somebody's been plkaying with Bryce at work...

j_lehmkuhl: How much is MCP ?

AuntiAlias: try codeccentral then

rvanderlippe: works - thanks ;)

AuntiAlias: QUEUE LIST: Carthach, Mindcrime, mhough, oblio, kikuchiyo, technoid, gdmsynth, (hint: type your questions so you can just hit return when I call on you) If you have a question, please type "?"

so

MetaScott has more important business elsewhere.

AuntiAlias: Carthach... go for it! : D

Carthach: Just a quick question, I never recieved a copy of Planetary Traveller, where can I get a copy?

Hanover: not i

;}

AuntiAlias: www.auntialias.com/home.shtml

has links to get PT! : )

The Smoking Man: <thanks for the help, gotta go to work though>

AuntiAlias: (from Amazon)

Carthach: Thanks, checking it now

Rodney: www.thirdplanet-inc.com www.amazon.com Fry's electronics SunCoast Video

The Smoking Man is off to render mirrored spheres.

Rodney: Nature Company Kim Poor's space art store

xochi: <Hanover - the bug report is headed yer way :-) >

AuntiAlias: Mindcrime!!!!

Mindcrime: Do you have any tips for animating water? (sorry if this was already covered, missed the beginning; if it was, I'll reference the log later).

Hanover: Thanks, I will try to get to it tommorrow first thing.

RG digital: good question........

?

xochi: <thank you from the bottom of my metallic rendered heart!>

Hanover: I could field this one if you have no answer Rodney.

Ringo has joined the party!

Rodney: Mind... if you like the gentle ripples of the Meridian21 test that's just moving the component of the material horizontally in the materials lab.

Go for it Hanover

Hanover: There are basically two ways to go about animating water in Bryce.

tommy saunters in.

oblio: ?#2

Rodney: Morphing terrains is painstaking but REALLY impressive if you get it right

Hanover: The first and easieast is to create a terrain which you modify over time.

tuckersaur: sure is ; )

Hanover: This is best for lake and ocean scenes.

RG digital: I've tried the object space moving -is there anything more realistic? ...like DTE noises?

j_lehmkuhl: morphing as in starting with one material and changing to a different material over time ??? Or changing things in the DTE ??

jplapointe has more important business elsewhere.

Hanover: If you want Water falls or rivers, try using the DTE to modify noise and phase of your water texture. This is the second way.

Rodney: <<john, morphing is changing the grayscale in the terrain editor in this instance>>

Mindcrime: hmmm, thanks. I was using infinite water planes, which as you know doesn't work well

gdmsynth: Can you create a morphing loop?

Hanover: This needs to be done over time again, but with the right tweaking can give very nice effects.

AuntiAlias: QUEUE LIST: mhough, oblio, kikuchiyo, technoid, gdmsynth, RG digital, oblio, (hint: type your questions so you can just hit return when I call on you)

j_lehmkuhl: ahhh

M'Kell: got ani's to tweak.. see ya'll... :) Steve, call me tomorrow. byeeeeeeeeeeee

tuckersaur: use the golden tools to drag the material on its x y or z axes over time - that is pretty convincing. the keyframe you set is called materials/offset

Mindcrime: and then I moved the camera over the surface

Carthach: ?

Hanover: Anything you want to add rodney?

M'Kell is off to see the Wizard.

Rodney: Nope, animating water is one of the Holy Grails of Brycing

AuntiAlias: mhough, you' re on! : )

Mindcrime: Ok thanks a lot! :)

slareau: May I toss out a hmble tip for waterfalls?

tommy is off to save the world.

mhough: I was just wondering if Rob Saunders is working on the new movie?

tommy has joined the party!

AuntiAlias: :::looking around:::: Rob Saunders? D'ya mean Rob Sonner? ; )

j_lehmkuhl: any tips are appreciated by me steve !!

mhough: Uh yeah. Oops

tuckersaur: golden tools aka edit texture and drag on that cube at the bottom

AuntiAlias: sure, steve, go for it....

Rodney: No, Rob Sonner is keeping pretty busy at Media 100. Infinty's Child is actually a concentratrted effort by four of the original PT9

slareau: Also works for rocks in a stream- rotate a turus. Negativ bolean out the top if need be- wait till you see the clip I've been working on. It's SLICK!

Rodney: Jan as the Producer, Bill Ellsworth and me doing all the work, and Paul Haslinger returning for the music

tuckersaur: a great lineup!

slareau: Add a rock to a stream, then add a rotatting torus just below the rock's top surface. Nice....

AuntiAlias: QUEUE LIST: oblio, kikuchiyo, technoid, gdmsynth, RG digital, oblio, Carthach (hint: type your questions so you can just hit return when I call on you)

Rodney: The distributer wanted a sequel and the time frame was too short to put a team together an d coordinate

a big project.

IC is a much more intimate movie.

Suddenly Teri_Stearns appears.

slareau: Mmmm... intimate....

Slee: 80 minutes-gotta talk or be bumped!

j_lehmkuhl: nice tip steve

Slee: :)

AuntiAlias: oblio!!!

oblio: what is the best way to go about constructing an animated (looped) QTVR scene/panorama? i understand that this can only be done thru QTVR Authoring Studio. does one render (say) 60 panoramas (each being a paticular frame in the loop)...

and stitch them toegether in the AS, or

do you render several animations at different angles and then stitch those together (much like you would do in the 'real world')?

Rodney: Steve, we might have to award you the Order of the Nekkid Brycin' Phleig if you keep that up

slareau: LOL! Gotta send you some short clips...

Rodney: Susan that one's for you/...

Tom B.: ?

AuntiAlias: yeah.. I'd suggest the former

tuckersaur: oblio - obviously a fan of The Point!

oblio: =)

AuntiAlias: but.. actually, it's been a while since I've done tons of QTVR production...

beowulf disappears in a blinding flash of smoke.

tuckersaur: I have it on VHS

RG digital: mmmmmmm....nekkid!

Ringo is off to see the Wizard.

AuntiAlias: to get an animating QTVR panorama movie, I think you gotta be trickier with QTVR tools

j_lehmkuhl: If I quit Bryce 4, will Bryce Talk quit also ??

slareau: KNOCK IT OFF! ;D

flip saunters in.

tuckersaur: lol Rodney!

AuntiAlias: whgat I mean is that QTVR tools that mayn't be in QTVRAS

oblio: i assume that you cover this in your QTVR book, yes?

flip: jello....sorry I'm late

oblio: o

mhough: No j_lehmkuhl. I just did it.

j_lehmkuhl: nope, still here !

AuntiAlias: yeah, it's prolly in the chapter on multimedia or the one after that

j_lehmkuhl: hehe

AuntiAlias: on the QTVR API

Rodney: << KNOCK IT OFF! >> very dangerous exclamation for Nekkid brycer to exclaim...

AuntiAlias: since that came out...

there've been more tools in the works

tuckersaur: YOW!

AuntiAlias: such as electrifier pro

and live stage

oblio: where do you get the API?

(what is API?)

AuntiAlias: I'd suggest taking it to the QTVR list

(QTVR API)

hang on a sec, I may paste the mailing list info

tuckersaur: to rodneys comment - or how to make a eunoch in one easy step!

AuntiAlias: arrgh. my email app isn't open

slareau: grrr....

AuntiAlias: but if you go to Apple's Quicktime site

there are learning resources, mailing lists.

go there and look for the one on quicktime vr

Rodney: my but the dingies are starting up early this evening...

AuntiAlias: the QTVR mailing list is active and helpful on things like this

Hoot: My question is: Does reducing the FPS in an animation mean the animation itself will run slower? Cuz when I'm done it's way too fast.

AuntiAlias: it's prolly where I'd find the answer to the question

tuckersaur: yeah - they have great tutorials there on all things quicktime!

AuntiAlias: hang on Hoot, we're taking questions in order

oblio: thank you....i can look from there, then

Rodney: Yes, Hoot, but beware of the effect of diminishing returns.

AuntiAlias: QUEUE LIST: kikuchiyo, technoid, gdmsynth, RG digital, oblio, and maybe others(hint: type your questions so you can just hit return when I call on you)

Hoot: sorry.

AuntiAlias: n/p

kikuchiyo, go for it!

Kikuchiyo: What type of computers (how fast) were used to make Planetary Traveller? How long did it take? How big were the files? What are you storing it on?

slareau: LOL! I love this part!

j_lehmkuhl: hehe, small question there.....

tuckersaur: little tiny macs..... hehe me too...

Carthach: AA: You bumbed me?

bumped - oops :})

Rodney: 8100s, Power Center 120s, 7500s, 9500s and a few 8500s

Two years

tuckersaur: and lots of zips in the mail!

RG digital: cripes!!

j_lehmkuhl: 6 months now with new G3's hehe

Rodney: There are approximately 120 GB of frames backed up on Exabyte streaming tape.

mhough: I need to go. Enjoyed the chat Susan and Rodney. I look forward to the release of IC.

AuntiAlias: QUEUE LIST: technoid, gdmsynth, RG digital, oblio, Tom B, Hoot (hint: type your questions so you can just hit return when I call on you)

(cathach, you asked a question about where to get PT.. that *was* it, yes? I'll add youb ack in queue if you got another one)

Kikuchiyo: Wow, Thanks

slareau: ?

Mindcrime has more important business elsewhere.

mhough has left the building.

Teri_Stearns is off to save the world.

tuckersaur: ?

Carthach: AA: Sorry, Thought I "?"ed again.

?

Rodney: Just as a reality check, i rendered a test animation on one of the old PT 8500s and it took 37 hours. On the new icebox G3 it took just over 7

AuntiAlias: Announcement. Next week we'll have tips and tricks/Q&A.. bring your tips!!

AuntiAlias has left the building.

tuckersaur: icebox - good name for it!

robokoneko has left the building.

slareau: I sent Lise to get us some popcorn, and she disappeared. Anyone seen her?

tuckersaur: nope

AuntiAlias has just entered.

AuntiAlias: ouch! inadvertantly quit

tuckersaur: ouch!

AuntiAlias: where were we in the queue?

j_lehmkuhl: hehe

AuntiAlias: QUEUE LIST: mhough, oblio, kikuchiyo, technoid, gdmsynth, RG digital, oblio, (hint: type your questions so you can just hit return when I call on you)

taht is what I had in my text buffer

Rodney: mh left?

tuckersaur: lets see - i was next LOL

technoid: me

Carthach: ?

moleman slinks out.

tuckersaur: just kidding

AuntiAlias: technoid!!!

Rodney: technoid should be next
