BryceAnimation, April 22, 1999

Brand new room!

vincehardy saunters in.

vincehardy: ok got it

Rodney has just entered.

Rodney: Howdy, y'all!

vincehardy: hi again rodney

Rodney: No, "hi" still

vincehardy: ok ok

did you had a chance to take a look at my animation mr. stickman?

Rodney: As in "I'm..." and "You're..."?

I confess, I haven't. The mail is still bookmarked but this has been the week from ,,, y'know,, thge bad place

vincehardy: no problem

Suddenly Jeffric appears.

gdmsynth has joined the party!

Rodney: Hmmmm..... elipses with commas... might be a new trend

vincehardy: I've made a new animation since though

RayDeX saunters in.

Mindscenes materializes from thin air.

Rodney: What of?

RayDeX: well

vincehardy: http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/seurat/48/clip7.html

gdmsynth: Can anyone tell me how to make water move in an animation other than by animating terrains? Is there a better way?

Suddenly xochi appears.

xochi: hey everyone...

Rodney: Gd, animate the texture.

Clay wants to play too.

AuntiAlias: While you are waiting for the Animation Discussion to begin, do check out the web site for some animations that Rodney has done.

http://www5.metacreations.com/products/bryce4/talk/events.cfm

Rodney: The water in the Meridian21 sample animation is just a watereplane with a diagonal horizontal mobve to the texture.

Clay: Hi guys nice animation tests Rodney

vincehardy: right nice

Rodney: Thanks, Clay.

Although Bill Ellsworth had a big part in them

Clay: cool!

gdmsynth: What do you mean mobve to the texture?

Rodney: mobve= move

Bob Van Ess has joined the party!

Clay: hi Bob

Bob Van Ess: hi Clay

vincehardy: hi bob

Bob Van Ess: vince I got the anims up

gdmsynth: You are just moving it on the x or y axis? We didn't have good luck with this. We want ocean waves that rock n roll

Clay: show the toast Bob heheh

Rodney: In the materials lab, click on the little edit button for the component and move the texture.

Ocean waves = terrain morphs.

Bob Van Ess: http://members.aol.com/tedmunroe/Bryce/toast.html

Clay: ya gotta love itLOL

gdmsynth: Yeah... I was hoping someone had discovered another way. Any B5 beta testers wanna comment?

Ringo has finally arrived.

Clay: hi ringo

Ringo: Hello, everyone. Rodney! the animation master.

Giles has joined the party!

Rodney: Although, you can do a lot with moving the floating objects. Look at my channel marker anim on the 2nd Bryce 4 CD

Clay: hi giles

The Smoking Man wants to play too.

vincehardy: Bob strikes again AWSOME!!!!

Giles: hey clay :)

Rodney: Hi, Ringo.

Clay: smokin man!

The Smoking Man: 'sup

RayDeX: Well too bad I can`t show you our movie ;( It`s not up the web yet.

gdmsynth: Thanks Rodney, I'll check it out.

Did you use the same technique?

AuntiAlias: Rodney...

just to get things straight beforehand

Mindscenes slinks out.

Bob Van Ess: http://members.aol.com/tedmunroe/Bryce/islandrun.html

Rodney: If you really watch it you'll see that the water doesn't really move but the marker bouy is rolling and sorta fools the eye.

AuntiAlias: Im gonna give you and Robert the floor at the outset to talk about whatever it is you want to talk about

THEN

zman52 wants to play too.

renato! has joined the party!

renato!: hey rodney

AuntiAlias: I'll have you guys take questions

Rodney: yo, ren!

renato!: I'm breathless with anticipation!

gdmsynth: Yes thats what I remember but it also was sort of dark wasn't it. Optical illusions are great tools for 3D.

Rodney: Okey and dokey, Anti. Where is Master Bailey?

beowulf materializes from thin air.

Clay: hi beo

beowulf: hello

gdmsynth: OK here's another easy question: How can you make objects disappear completely in an animation?

Rodney: Yeah, gd, I don't know why that one enfded up so dark. My monitor must've been way off when I set up the render and it had to be sent as soon as it finished.

gdmsynth: I wish I could make objects exist only for a segment of time as with After Effects.

But the illusion was effective.

Hanover has just entered.

Rodney: gd, does setting the attribute to hide from one keyframe to another work?

AuntiAlias: While you are waiting for the Animation Discussion to begin, do check out the web site for some animations that Rodney has done.

http://www5.metacreations.com/products/bryce4/talk/events.cfm

Clay: hi han

vincehardy: Pretty cool Bob!!! I love these new animations

Hanover: hi

gdmsynth: I'll give it a try. I'm actually new to Bryce but diving in on the deep end with a video animation project.

Bob Van Ess: thanks vince..as with you these are just little clips of a bigger anim

AuntiAlias: Rodney, re: Mr. Bailey.. he's in "The War Room"... I saw him earlier today...

Hanover is off to see the Wizard.

AuntiAlias: will go and check on him...

vincehardy: Bob: planning on putting a big one on your site at some point?

Suddenly oblio appears.

vincehardy: talking about the new ones...

Clay: hi ob

Rodney: OK, Susan

lharriet has just entered.

Clay: hi IH

Hanover has just entered.

RayDeX: http://www.eosoffice.com/artwork/artwork_3d_01.html

gdmsynth: Does anyone else want suspended/resume rendering?

Rodney: Ray, are those spaces in that URL?

gdmsynth: This way you can use your computer in the day and render animations at night.

Baument saunters in.

Rodney: gd, suspend/resume works great in B4

gdmsynth: How?

Rodney: Meridian 21 was rendered in 4 pieces.

Kikuchiyo has finally arrived.

Ringo: animating sky setting say going from the starfield settings from the sky library to "armageddon sunset" can that be done?

gdmsynth: You can only temporarily suspend. Not as with Strata Studio Pro where you can quite the program altogether and pick it up later.

Reflash has just entered.

Rodney: Just stop the render, save the scene. When you reopen, hit File:Render Animation. Bryce defaults to starting from the current frame

Meta Robert materializes from thin air.

gdmsynth: Wow! Brian of Metacreations told me it couldn't be done.

Meta Robert: Hey all...

gdmsynth: I'll give your idea a try. Rodney, you've already answered ALL of my questions!

Rodney: One caveat. It only works if you're rendering to sequential images.

Bob Van Ess: I'm going to redo an anim online called "in search of" vince... it's pretty long now as it was compressed with QT2 looks fuzzy and is 1.4 megs

gdmsynth: I'll have to thunk up some more.......

Danny has finally arrived.

Rodney: Of course, if you're not rendering tom sequential images anyway, nothing can help you.

Clay: hi dan

Danny: Hi Clay

xochi has more important business elsewhere.

RayDeX: I got to get moving. Some more layouts in Quark are waiting for me. ;(

Rodney: You're darned to power outage heck for all time by Bob the Dragon

gdmsynth: What do you mean sequential images?

RayDeX: Too bad

vincehardy: Bob: let me know when it's ready..

AuntiAlias: Mister Bailey is here! :D

Rodney: On a Mac: render to sequential pict files

Bob Van Ess: will do

Meta Robert: Hello Folks!

Rodney: On Windows: render to sequential BMPs

RayDeX is off to render mirrored spheres.

AuntiAlias: Tip!!

Highlight speakers with different colors to help you track who is saying what.

(the people list allows you to change colors--Upper left side, 2nd Green button)

gdmsynth: Oh I see, as opposed to rendering as an animation file?

vincehardy: hi robert

Meta Robert: How's it going rodney.. Long time no see...

gdmsynth: A sequential series of pict files eh?

Rodney: NEVER ever render to an AVI or a Quicktime.

Hi, Robert!

gdmsynth: Why?

justin has just entered.

Bob Van Ess: I did a moviwe in a movie using sequential picts

M'Kell materializes from thin air.

Rodney: If there's any gl;itch you're stuck with it.

rgross has finally arrived.

vincehardy: Hi mike

stiffkat has just entered.

M'Kell: Hello everyone...

Rodney: If power fails you lose the whole thing.

rgross: hi all

M'Kell: Heya vince.

Suddenly slareau appears.

Rodney: Can't stop ansd start

gdmsynth: Yeah after several days rendering that could be a drag.

stiffkat: hey everyone

M'Kell: Steve.. how are y?

Rodney: Need any more reasons?

justin: raise your hands!

slareau: Hey gang!

Rodney- nice to see ya!

AuntiAlias: While you are waiting for the Animation Discussion to begin, do check out the web site for some animations that Rodney has done.

http://www5.metacreations.com/products/bryce4/talk/events.cfm

Look for the link under Logs. You'll see movies.

stiffkat: steve! I just knew you'd be here LOL

Jeffric: hiya Steve

Rodney: Steve! Howzit bean, kid?

gdmsynth: How do you keep track of the pict sequences. Are they all numbered?

slareau: And wanna hear some cool news? KK is gone from the list!

GreG has just entered.

Kevin saunters in.

M'Kell: You don't think he could stay away do you?

GreG: hallo

Kevin: hey all

stiffkat: how'd that happen?

M'Kell: Heya GreG

GreG disappears in a blinding flash of smoke.

Meta Robert: dgmsynth, the pict seqs are numbered

M'Kell: see ya GreG

GreG has just entered.

The Smoking Man: When will the full movie be finished?

Rodney: Tell gdsynth how much better rendering to pictures is than rendering to an AVI

gdmsynth: What about when you start a new sequence, can you start renumbering picts?

GreG: M'Kell hallo.

ricster41 wants to play too.

Suddenly Zaphod appears.

justin: wha who!! lotsa people,,,this outa be fun!

stiffkat: too neat :)

Meta Robert: How many folks in here started with Bryce1?

M'Kell: I'm gonna be quiet here.. going for my tea.. :)

GreG: Cactus man HA HA HA

The Smoking Man: Bryce 3

Reflash: 2

beowulf: bryce2

GreG: Bryce4 = )

justin: maybe that should be my new nick?

stiffkat: bryce 3

Kikuchiyo: B1

justin: b4

Suddenly Slee appears.

justin: hehe

Rodney: Beta 4 Robert. Before David started doing the outer space stuff and was still doing BWs of his girlfriend.

slareau: B2

Bob Van Ess: B1

GreG: kevin so you looking for a job?

Meta Robert: Cool, so we got old schoolers and new alike... nice crowd

rgross: lol rodney I remember those days

Suddenly Bryguy appears.

gdmsynth: B3d

slareau: <-old fart

Kevin: not at the moment, are you hiring?

justin: hehe

GreG: it depends

really

stiffkat: LOL 1rst through 12th grade

Zaphod slinks out.

justin: i need a real job!

Rodney: I think David Palermo was the first person to really explore Black and White Brycing.

M'Kell: Back (_|_)

justin: cactus hunting just isn't cutting it!

Kevin: e-mail me sometime at kmorris@ascencon.com Greg

slareau: <-will render for cpu ugrade

GreG: I have to see how the company does for the first few months

Danny: You are'nt even gonna say hello to me (Sniff sniff) steve

RG digital wants to play too.

stiffkat: LOL steve ya nut

justin: wa wa wa

M'Kell: I thought you needed clothes Steve.. :)

RG digital: Hello everybody!!

slareau: Ahh, Danny- sorry, this is scolling too fast!

GreG: So do you do alot of 3d?

slareau: yup

gdmsynth: Anyone else creating video with Bryce?

Danny: I wear Fuzzy Eeyore slippers

vincehardy: yes

M'Kell: Here

Kevin: Some, still want to learn more. You can see my personal site at http://www.ramsfootball.com/art,htm

mhough wants to play too.

slareau: Getting there slowly but surely.

AuntiAlias: Tip!!

Highlight speakers with different colors to help you track who is saying what.

(the people list allows you to change colors--Upper left side, 2nd Green button)

stiffkat: steve renders so much his eyes reflect terrains in daylight LOL

justin: okay,,,how many of you are from outa-town?

RG digital: Yes, I have gigs of animations!!

Clark/CDS wants to play too.

slareau: I got smart Rodney- I have people rendering FOR me! LOL!

Meta Robert: Rodney, who would those crazy folks be??? Lol

Reflash: what town?

RG digital disappears in a blinding flash of smoke.

RG digital has joined the party!

GreG: ok

renato!: you gotta be crazy to do video

gdmsynth: So tell me about your experiences. I'm beginning to feel like I getting into deep water creating videos with Bryce.

renato!: that's wy they call us vidiots

why

GreG: . was a ,

justin: thats where the $ are!

slareau: M'kell- how many minutes of animation are we up to now, you know?

RG digital: It takes a lot of patience

Kevin: try this http://www.ramsfootball.com/art.htm greg

Rodney: gd, you ain't never seen water that deep.

Kevin: stupid comma

justin: dohhh!

M'Kell: Somewhere nere 120

The Smoking Man: east coast

Rodney: Jim Cameron type deeep water

gdmsynth: I know! That's what I'm feeling. So tell me it ain't so......PLEEEESE

stiffkat: LOL kev, I do that too

AuntiAlias: is it time yet?

Kevin: fat fingers

Danny: It is ytoime

M'Kell: 5 minutes Susan

gdmsynth: 120 minutes! WWOW

Danny: time

AuntiAlias: My watch says 5 till, this comptuer says 3 after, and the other one says 3 till

stiffkat: I got 9P straight up

slareau: 120 minutes?!? You been ren=dering behind my back or something?

gdmsynth: GO

justin: we don't need no stinking time

M'Kell: LOL

Rodney: We're shooting for a minute a month per render machine for Infinity's Child.

justin: hehe

M'Kell: hehehehehe

AuntiAlias: While you are waiting for the Animation Discussion to begin, do check out the web site for some animations that Rodney has done.

http://www5.metacreations.com/products/bryce4/talk/events.cfm

RG digital: Can you give us some details on your new Bryce project, Rodney?

Meta Robert: Average it out Susan

:)

GreG: ok

nice

AuntiAlias: Welcome to BryceTalk animation night. Tonight our special guests are Rodney L'Ongnion (Rodney) and Robert Bailey. (Meta Robert)

We'll be doing this in two parts..

First, We'll have Rodney and Robert tell you their tips and perspectives on animation in Bryce...

Then we'll take Q&A

so....

gdmsynth: A minute per month. Are you using all the footage?

AuntiAlias: to begin with

gdmsynth: What is the S/N ratio?

JeffP materializes from thin air.

M'Kell: shhhhhhhhhhhhhh

AuntiAlias: let's start with tips from Rodney and Robert

Who'd like to go first?

: )

justin: clap clap

Meta Robert: You first Rodney :)

Rodney: I'll go because I only have 2 tips.

First tip.

Always render to a sequence of frames.

slareau:

RG digital: doh!

Rodney: There is no downside to this.

AuntiAlias: frames? do you mean images?

like pict or bmp?

justin: wow

Rodney: You can compress these frames to any codec you want after vthey're all rendered.

Meta Robert: Agreed Rodney

gdmsynth: Same with animation isn't it? Lossless

Rodney: Bryce 4 has flawlessly restarted interrupted animations this way on several occaisions.

Bob Van Ess: what about renduring a QT mov w/ no compression

robokoneko has finally arrived.

justin: why can't it render to tif format w/alpha?

AuntiAlias: just for sanity's sake... we'll take questions in a bit

Rodney: If you render a movie... any power accident trashes the whole thing.

justin: whoops,,n ? yet

AuntiAlias: let em tell you their stuff

justin: k

Rodney: Even if you're on frame 1799 of 1800.

AuntiAlias: mebbe the next line that's being typed is an answer to your question! ; )

gdmsynth: How do you restart in the middle of a sequence? Do you tell it what number pict to start on or what?

GreG: I got a big gen Fualt error when I tried to render to Qt

JWalk saunters in.

M'Kell: shhhhhhhhhhhh

Carthach has joined the party!

Rodney: OK, a lot of folks have asked about the restart thing.

Clay: hi carth

AuntiAlias: welcome! Rodney has the floor!

Carthach: Hey Clay

GreG is off to render mirrored spheres.

Rodney: I do this a lot. Just stop the rendering and save the Bryce svcene.

Suddenly tommy appears.

tuckersaur has finally arrived.

gdmsynth: How do you restart?

ccasady wants to play too.

Rodney: When you reopen Bryce and hit file:render animation it defaults to the current frame, the one where you stipped.

gdmsynth: Are they numbered?

aeryn wants to play too.

Bob Van Ess: great tip!

justin: q&a are after the tips people!

Rodney: The Meridian21 test render was stopped three times. It's from 4 different Bryce rendering sessions.

tuckersaur slinks out.

tuckersaur has finally arrived.

Rodney: The babelesque test was rendered on TWO DIFFERENT MACHINES.

You can't do that when you render to an AVI or a MooV

Tip number two.

gdmsynth: What about assembling in AE for example.

Pegasus has finally arrived.

AuntiAlias: Welcome! Rodney's got the floor. Q& A to follow after both he and Robert have shared their tips

Rodney: The two little buttons to the left of the big render ball... use them.

justin: yea,,gdmsynth

xochi has joined the party!

Rodney: Test your animation at third or half size with fast erender and textures off.

You'll see all kinds of stuff you will foix when you only have an hour or so invested instead of after a five day render.

That's pretty much the secrets. Talent and experience helps lots .

AuntiAlias: Rodney, would you describe for us how you go about setting up an animation motion test?

Rodney: Sure.
