BryceTalk Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Registering for BryceTalkCreating a Nickname

I get an error that says "We're sorry, that
Nickname already exists. Please try again." What's up with that?
Each person in BryceTalk has a unique nickname. There can be no duplicate
nicknames in BryceTalk. The Nickname that you tried to sign up for was
already created by another person. Think up another one, and good luck!
Can I create a second Nickname?
BryceTalk is set up so that there is one account per Bryce serial number.
Once you have already created a BryceTalk account using your Bryce serial
number, you may not create a second BryceTalk account.
I changed my mind about my nickname and want
to change it. How do I do that?
The short answer:
You may not change your nickname. When you created your nickname, there
was a statement that cautioned you, saying, "Once you create your nickname
you will not be able to change it. So choose well."
The long answer:
We believe that the best online communities are ones in which participants
have a single identity. When there is no face-to-face contact, there are
other ways to know and be known. A consistent identity is your "face"
and people will know you based on what you say (the words you type).
We have observed that in some online settings, people who are able to
generate multiple nicknames are able to wreak havoc without any consequences‹a
person does something simply because it's possible to do so, unfortunately.
So we designed BryceTalk to have a single, unchangeable nickname.
Errors Registering for BryceTalk
I was registering for BryceTalk and I got a serial
number error.
There are three possible reasons for getting a serial number error:
1. The dashes weren't included. Please include the dashes when entering
your serial number.
2. You must use your registered Bryce 4 serial number to create a BryceTalk
account. While we honor your previous Bryce 2 or 3D serial number, it
cannot be used to create a BryceTalk account.
3. You may have only one account per registered copy of Bryce 4. If you
already have a BryceTalk account, you cannot make another one.
When I was creating my account, the signup process
"hung" or my browser crashed while I was sending the signup information.
Now, when I try to sign up again, I get a serial number error.
Try using BryceTalk with the nickname and password you just tried to
create, to see if an account was actually made. If not, try to make one
again or contact us.
I got a password error when I tried to create
an account
You must choose a password and enter it into both fields. Passwords are
case-sensitive, must be at least four characters long, and can include
any standard keyboard character.
Problems Signing On
I get an error that says "Unable to connect, error
#8. Make sure you're connected to the Internet." But I AM connected to
the internet.
That error message also appears when you attempt to connect to BryceTalk
and your Nickname or Password are not filled in. Make sure that your Nickname
and Password are in the appropriate spots.
There is no cursor in the text entry area. I
cannot enter my nickname or password.
If the text box is colored light green, the area is selected; go ahead
and type. Use the tab key to get from the nickname to the password and
back.
My computer is behind a firewall and I can't
access BryceTalk
If your computer is behind a firewall, ask your network administrator
to open port 1974 with UDP and TCP protocols.
When I enter BryceTalk, the screen is all white.
I don't see anything there.
For some reason, the font is not displaying. (This sometimes happens
with Windows95/98/NT.) Change the font by pressing Ctrl+right arrow (or
Ctrl+left arrow) to scroll through your system fonts until you see words
in the BryceTalk window.
Miscellaneous Questions
Does BryceTalk cost anything?
No. The "price of admission" for BryceTalk is the price of Bryce 4. If
you have Bryce 4, there is no additional charge for using BryceTalk. Of
course, using BryceTalk requires that you be connected to the Internet,
so you will need to pay whatever amount you already pay to connect to
the internet.
